The Effectiveness of Aloe Vera in Multiple Moist Spray Products as a Hair Tonic to Reduce Students Scalp Irritation

Skin irritation on the scalp is often experienced by men. This happens due to the high increase in sebum production and frequent use of excessive products like pomade. For men with sensitive scalp, this causes hair problems such as dandruff. Proper hair care can help manage dandruff, including the use of a hair tonic containing aloe vera. This research aims to investigate the influence of aloe vera content on dandruff treatment. The study design employed pre-experimental research with a pre-post test group, involving a population of 23 respondents and a sample of 23 respondents selected through total sampling. Statistical analysis utilized paired t-tests with significance set at <0.05. Results from 23 respondents indicated that 19 respondents (82.6%) experienced a decrease in scores, while 4 respondents (17.4%) showed an increase. Statistical analysis revealed significant results with a p-value of 0.000 < 0.05. The conclusion drawn is that the aloe vera content in Multiple Moist Spray has a beneficial effect on treating dry dandruff. Therefore, individuals with dandruff are encouraged to be selective in choosing scalp treatments.

Development and Evaluation of a Novel Fish-Derived Protein Peptide Conditioner Formulated with Pneumatophorus japonicus Heads Peptides

Given the unique advantage of hair conditioners formulated with marine-derived proteins and their hydrolysates in terms of green, effective, sustainable, and environmentally friendly. This study presents a novel fish-derived protein peptide-based hair conditioner that featuring Pneumatophorus japonicus heads peptides (PHP). Results demonstrate that the PHP conditioner exhibits favorable sensory properties, improves the surface morphology and structure of damaged hair, reduce the degree of fragmentation and roughness, improve the gloss and make hair smoother. PHP penetrates into the hair shaft, interacting with hair fiber keratin to enhance the integrity and stability of the α-conformation of hair keratin. Furthermore, the PHP conditioner treatment increased total amino acid content by 4.98% and hydrophobic amino acid content by 2.67%, approaching the levels observed in virgin hair. Therefore, the PHP conditioner effectively permeates the surface and interior of hair fibers, filling voids and ameliorating changes in both the microstructural and compositional aspects of the hair. These improvements surpass those observed with a commercially available wheat protein conditioner. Overall, the PHP conditioner effectively repairs damaged hair, offering a new strategy for the development of innovative natural hair care products.

Revitalizing skin, hair, nails, and muscles: Unlocking beauty and wellness with vegan collagen.

Collagen, a key protein in the body maintains hair, skin and bone health and its production tends to decrease in synthesis as humans age. The demand for vegan collagen-builder has increased worldwide due to increased adaptability to vegan diet. This clinical study was designed aim to evaluate the safety and efficacy of vegan collagen builder (VEGCOL™️) at different dosages (2.5, 5, and 10 g) in adult participants. Total 66 subjects (22 subjects/dose) aged 30 to 50 years were enrolled, and 63 subjects completed the study. Duration of study was 60 days. Evaluations included change in skin elasticity, hydration, crow's feet area wrinkles, fine lines, skin, Glogau skin age, change in pain scale score, muscle strength and subject perception assessment about test treatment use. After 60 days of treatment, there was significant improvement in hair growth rate by 45.01%, 38.54% and 50.37% with p < 0.01 for doses 2.5, 5, and 10 g respectively. Additionally, 19.64% (p < 0.0001) and 20.51% (p < 0.0001) increase in hair density and hair thickness respectively was observed with 10 g dose. 2.5 g dose resulted in 33.03% (p < 0.01) increase in skin smoothness and 49.94% (p < 0.0001) decrease in crow's feet area wrinkles, decreased retraction time by 21.71 milliseconds (p < 0.05). 52.54% reduction in pain score (p < 0.001). No any adverse events were reported. Vegan collagen-builder effectively improved multiple age-related concerns such as wrinkles, fine lines, joint pain, muscle strength and hair growth. All respondents perceived the product as beneficial in improving the aesthetics of the skin, hair, and nails. The findings support the use of vegan collagen-builder as safe and efficacious in promoting healthier skin, stronger muscles, and improved hair and nail conditions.

Nowadays the use of herbal products has become the chief option for people everywhere because of curing treatment without any side effects

Phenotypic and mutational spectrum of 17 Chinese patients with Menkes Disease.

Menkes Disease (MD) is a fatal X-linked recessive disorder caused by mutations in the ATP7A gene. Severe cases typically die before the age of three. Mild MD and occipital horn syndrome are variants of MD characterized by a less severe phenotype and longer survival. This case series aims to validate previous findings, expand the clinical phenotype, identify novel ATP7A mutations of MD patients. Observational data with follow-up were collected from 17 genetically diagnosed Chinese MD patients. All 17 patients exhibited neurological symptoms, including delayed motor milestones (100%) and seizures (58.8%). Unspecific pregnancy or delivery complications occurred in 9 patients (52.9%). The most prevalent connective tissue problems were abnormal hair (76.5%), followed by skeletal and dental abnormalities (52.9%), skin problems (41.2%) and hernia (35.3%). Sensorineural hearing loss (17.6%) was previously unreported. Coronary artery aneurysm and patent foramen ovale (5.9%) were infrequent. One 16-year-old boy carries pathological exon 3-4 deletion, presents novel mild phenotype including short stature and cerebellar ataxia. Out of 13 patients with follow-up (median: 24 months), 7 patients (53.8%) died with median survival of 40 months (range: 21-48 months), 3 patients (23.1%) show severe motor development delay and 2 (15.4%) have refractory epilepsy, only the mild MD patient shows improved cerebellar ataxia. Sixteen ATP7A mutations were identified including 6 small indels (37.5%), 5 nonsense mutations (31.2%), 2 missense mutations (12.5%), 2 exon deletions (12.5%), and 1 splice site mutation (6.25%). Fourteen mutations were novel. Our study further broadens the phenotypic and genotypic spectrums of Menkes disease.

Pili Torti: A Clue to Life-threatening Illness – A Rare Case Report

Menkes kinky hair disease (MKHD) is a rare inherent error of copper metabolism presenting during early infancy with multi-system involvement. It is associated with high morbidity and mortality in early childhood. Characteristic hair changes mirror internal metabolic alterations. Here, we report a case of 13-month-old male child who presented with peculiar changes of skin and hair along with convulsion and high-grade fever. Dermatoscopy and hair mount examination showing pili torti with pigmentary dilution pointed toward the diagnosis of MKHD, which was further enforced with blood investigations showing low copper and ceruloplasmin levels. Cutaneous findings play a crucial role in early diagnosis, thereby reducing morbidity with timely treatment.

AP collagen peptides (APCPs) promote hair growth by activating the GSK-3β/β-catenin pathway and improve hair condition.

AP collagen peptides (APCPs) are enzymatically decomposed collagen peptides that contain tri-peptides such as glycine-proline-hydroxyproline. We found that APCPs increased the proliferation of both human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) and human outer root sheath cells (hORSCs). APCPs also stimulated the secretion of several growth factors, including IGFBP-6, PDGF-AB, PIGF and VEGF in hDPCs. Moreover, APCPs enhanced the phosphorylation of Akt(Ser473), GSK-3β(Ser9) and β-catenin(Ser675), indicating the activation of the GSK-3β/β-catenin signalling pathway. Exvivo culture of human hair follicles (hHFs) tissue and invivo patch assay revealed that APCPs promoted the elongation of hHFs and the induction of new hair shafts. In a mouse model, APCPs significantly promoted the transition from telogen to anagen phase and prolonged anagen phase, resulting in increased hair growth. APCPs also improved the thickness, amino acid content (cystine and methionine) and roughness of mouse hair. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that APCPs accelerate hair growth and contribute to overall hair health. Therefore, APCPs have the potential to be utilized as a food supplement and ingredient for preventing hair loss and maintaining hair health.

Effect of a Hair Loss Management Concurrently Incorporating Aroma Scalp Massage on Hair and Scalp Conditions

This study is a similar experimental study aimed at analyzing the effects of a hair loss management program combined with aroma scalp massage on changes in hair and scalp conditions. The study included 8 participants each in the experimental and control groups, aged 20 to 50, who underwent the hair loss management program once a week for 8 weeks. Data collected were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 program. The results showed that, firstly, both groups did not show significant differences in hair thickness and density based on the timing of management and between-group differences. Secondly, both groups showed significant increases in moisture and oiliness after 4 and 8 weeks, while stratum corneum amount, pore condition, and scalp surface significantly decreased. A significant decrease in stratum corneum amount was observed in the experimental group after 8 weeks. Thirdly, subjective satisfaction evaluations after management revealed significantly higher satisfaction ratings in the experimental group.

Mercury Levels in Selected Medicines and Dietary Supplements in Poland.

Current trends are promoting youth, beauty, health, and fitness. Individuals often seek out remedies, such as medicines or dietary supplements (DS), to achieve these goals. However, highly processed foods, chronic stress, and environmental pollution contribute to the development of civilization diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mercury (Hg) content in medicines and DS that are available in Poland. A total of 139 preparations were tested (75 drugs, 64 DS). The medicines contained preparations belonging to antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal; analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory; heart and blood vessel disease preventatives; respiratory tract infections treatment; diuretics; aiding digestion; supplements; antidiarrhoeals; anti-allergics; anti-rheumatics; antibiotics; and others. The tested dietary supplements had an effect on the following: improve the condition of skin, hair, and nails; vitamins; minerals; probiotics; weight loss; special for women; and others. The Hg content of the samples was determined using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The Hg content of all the preparations varied widely (0.1-57.4µg/kg), with a median Hg concentration of 1.2µg/kg. The median Hg concentration for medicines was 0.8µg/kg, prescription medicines having higher Hg concentrations (0.9µg/kg) than over-the-counter (OTC) drugs (0.5µg/kg). For DS, the Hg content was found to be higher than for drugs, at 2.0µg/kg. The herbal preparations showed the highest Hg content among the individual DS groups (3.4µg/kg). The Hg concentrations in the tested drug and DS samples did not exceed acceptable standards. However, if multiple pharmaceutical preparations are taken simultaneously over a long period of time, and there is existing environmental exposure, there is a possibility of Hg concentration accumulation and adverse health effects.

Human urinary excretion kinetics of the antimycotic climbazole: Biomonitoring of two new metabolites after oral and dermal dosage

Climbazole is an antimycotic compound used in cosmetic products as a preservative or as an active ingredient in anti-dandruff (AD) formulations. In this study we provide human toxicokinetic data on climbazole. Using our previously published analytical method, we investigated the urinary excretion of two climbazole metabolites, (OH)2-climbazole and cx-OH-climbazole, for 48 h after oral ingestion (n = 5, 49–77 µg/kg bw) and for 72 h after dermal application of either a climbazole-containing rinse-off AD shampoo or a leave-on hair tonic (n = 2×3). In total, 23.9 % (18.0–33.4 %) of the oral dose were excreted as the two abovementioned metabolites over 48 h. In one volunteer, who used an over-the-counter phytopharmaceutical, metabolite excretion was about three times lower and we found influences on diastereoselectivity of (OH)2-climbazole formation using a modified analytical method. After dermal application, urinary concentration maxima occurred considerably later than after oral intake. The two different dermal exposure scenarios also revealed a relevance of exposure duration and product formulation on the systemic availability of climbazole. Back-calculated oral-dose-equivalent intakes from the dermal exposures showed a maximum climbazole intake of 18.5 µg/kg bw/d after hair tonic use, or 6.6 µg/kg bw/d after AD shampoo application.

Novel pathogenic variants in HR underlie atrichia with papular lesions in a cohort of 10 families.

Atrichia with papular lesions (APL) is a hair abnormality characterized by loss of hair on the scalp and rest of the body. In a few cases, hair loss is accompanied by the appearance of keratotic papules on the body. It is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. Sequence variants in the HR (hairless) gene are responsible for this hair abnormality. Here, we present nine consanguineous families and one nonconsanguineous family with clinical manifestations of APL. Whole exome followed by Sanger sequencing and/or direct Sanger sequencing was performed to identify pathogenic variants. The study revealed seven novel pathogenic variants c.794del;p.(Pro265Argfs*98), c.2921-2936del;p.(Tyr974Leufs*16), c.2889C>A;p.(Cys963*), c.2689C>T;p.(Gln897*), c.3186_3187dup;p.(Gln1063Profs*43), c.560dup;p.(Tyr188Ilefs*131), c.2203+5G>C, c.2776+5G>A, and the previously reported variant c.1837C>T;p.(Arg613*) in HR in these families. The study not only expands the mutational spectrum in the HR gene but also highlights the unusual phenotypic findings and will facilitate genetic counseling of families with members showing various types of hair loss disorders in the local population.

Exploring the Use of Natural Ingredients for the Protection of Textured Hair from Ultraviolet Radiation: An In Vitro Study

Human hair is characterized by significant diversity, which is dictated by the individual genetic makeup. It is estimated that up to 70% of the world’s population has textured hair, with a significant proportion also living in areas with high exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). This highlights the unique requirements for textured hair care products that can protect hair shafts from the harmful effects of the environment whilst enhancing the natural features of the fibre. In this study, we investigated the UV-protective effects of hair conditioner formulated from active ingredients, mangiferin, ferulic acid and naringin. The analysis of UV-irradiated straight and textured hair was performed by measurements of hair thickness and darkness, the uptake of the fluorescent dye, spectral absorbance of keratin extracts, ATR-FTIR and SEM. We found that textured hair was more sensitive to UVR-induced changes than straight hair, with the primary molecular targets represented by chemical groups in keratins. Pre-treatment of the hair with conditioner had protective effects against structural damage and oxidative stress caused by UVR. These data indicate the importance of the personalized approach to hair research and the formulation of hair care products tailored to the individual demands of textured hair types.

Expanding the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of trichohepatoenteric syndrome: a report of eight patients from five unrelated families.

Trichohepatoenteric syndrome (THES) is characterized by neonatal-onset intractable diarrhea. It often requires long-term total parenteral nutrition (TPN). In addition, other characteristic findings of the syndrome include growth retardation, facial dysmorphism, hair abnormalities, various immunological problems and other rare system findings. Two genes and their associated pathogenic variants have been associated with this syndrome: SKIC3 and SKIC2. In this case series, the clinical findings and molecular analysis results of a total of 8 patients from 5 different families who presented with persistent diarrhea and were diagnosed with THES were shared. Pathogenic variants were detected in the SKIC3 gene in 6 of our patients and in the SKIC2 gene in 2 patients. It was planned to compare the clinical findings of our patients with other patients, together with literature data, and to present yet-undefined phenotypic features that may be related to THES. In our case series, in addition to our patients with a novel variant, patient number 2 had a dual phenotype (THES and Spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia, sponastrime type) that has not been reported yet. Delay in gross motor skills, mild cognitive impairment, radioulnar synostosis, osteoporosis, nephropathy and cystic lesions (renal and liver) were observed as unreported phenotypic findings. We are expanding the clinical and molecular repertoire of the syndrome regarding patients diagnosed with THES. We recommend that the NGS (next-generation sequencing) multigene panel should be used as a diagnostic tool in cases with persistent diarrhea.

Dermatology resident comfort level treating hair conditions related to patients with skin of color.

Although recent studies demonstrated resident satisfaction in the treatment of skin of color (SOC) related disease, comfort levels treating hair specific to populations within the SOC spectrum is unclear. The purpose of this study is to assess dermatology residents comfort level in recognizing and treating various common hair conditions with a focus on those specific to SOC. An Institutional Review Board-approved survey was distributed to United States residents of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited dermatology programs. Data pertaining to hair care knowledge and treatment comfort levels were collected. Analysis was completed using equal variance 2-sample t tests and analysis of variance F tests, P < .05. Dermatology residents were relatively comfortable with common conditions such as androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata, but uncomfortable with creating healthy hair regimens, discussing natural hair care products, and treating trichorrhexis nodosa. Resident self-identification as underrepresented in medicine significantly impacted resident knowledge of hair care and treatment in patients with SOC. This study was limited due to small sample size and potential recall bias. This study highlights knowledge gaps in understanding hair-related care for patients with SOC, affirming the continued importance of diversifying dermatology programs as well as hair-specific training for residents.

Successful treatment of retinopathy of prematurity in oculocutaneous albinism with OCA2 variants: a case report and review of literature

BackgroundOculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a group of autosomal recessive hereditary disorders that affect melanin biosynthesis, resulting in abnormalities in hair, skin, and eyes. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a proliferative retinopathy mainly observed in premature infants with low birth weight and early gestational age, but it can also affect full-term infants or children with normal weight, particularly in developing countries. The coexistence of ROP and OCA is rare. There is limited documentation regarding treatment approaches, with few studies reporting positive outcomes with laser treatment due to the absence of melanin pigment. This study discusses the treatment challenges in a female infant diagnosed with ROP and OCA, and underscores the importance of genetic analysis in guiding therapeutic decisions for this rare comorbid condition.Case presentationThe study presents a case of ROP occurring concurrently with OCA. Genetic testing revealed two variants, c.727C > T (p.R243C) and c.1832 T > C (p.L611P), in the OCA2 gene, inherited from the patient's mother and father, respectively. The identified mutations were consistent with a diagnosis of OCA2, classified as a subtype of OCA. The patient initially received intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injection, followed by laser photocoagulation therapy for a recurrent event. A favorable outcome was observed during the 2-month follow-up period.ConclusionsThe co-occurrence of ROP and OCA is a rare phenomenon, and this is the first recorded case in the Chinese population. The current case supports the use of laser as the primary treatment modality for ROP in OCA2 patients with partial pigmentation impairment. Furthermore, genetic analysis can aid in predicting the effectiveness of laser photocoagulation in this patient population.

Skin appendage abnormalities in hypothyroidism: understanding and management

Introduction and purpose Thyroid ailments are frequently encountered in medical practice, often intertwined with a variety of conditions that may or may not share common underlying factors. Among the organs profoundly influenced by these disorders is the skin, which manifests a diverse array of clinical presentations. However, the exact changes in the structure of skin appendages have not been well studied. Changes in hair structure or nail findings may be helpful in early diagnosis of thyroid disorders and therefore are important for dermatologist education. Hair loss can be a very uncomfortable and embarrassing ailment. Many diseases, nutritional deficiencies, stress and other factors can affect the hair condition and even induce its falling out. This review seeks to explore the numerous skin disorders arising directly or indirectly from thyroid irregularities, offering an updated understanding of the interplay between thyroid function and skin health. State of Knowledge It is well-established in scientific literature that thyroid gland disorders, particularly hypothyroidism, induce metabolic deceleration, influencing the inadequate nourishment of skin appendages, resulting in skin dryness and fragility. Patients commonly report pallor, cold intolerance, and deteriorating hair and nail quality. Conclusion We noticed strong correlation between hair loss and the autoimmune process during the dysfunction of thyroid. Euthyroidism plays an important role in hair cycle and any changes can disturb its proper development. In Hashimoto disease elevated levels of antibodies negatively influence hair cycle by excessively inducing telogen phase. Moreover, the blood vessels of the skin constrict disrupting the blood flow which affects hair follicles.

Associations between Celiac Disease, Extra-Gastrointestinal Manifestations, and Gluten-Free Diet: A Narrative Overview.

Millions of children and adults worldwide suffer from undiagnosed and untreated celiac disease (CeD). The clinical picture of CeD is highly heterogeneous and comprises manifestations that can affect almost the whole body. This narrative overview is aimed at characterizing diseases and complaints that are associated with unrecognized CeD and that frequently involve sites other than the gastrointestinal (G.I.) tract, i.e., dental, otorhinolaryngological, and ocular complications; skin and hair abnormalities; afflictions of the bones, joints, and muscles; cardiovascular affectations; kidney diseases; neuro-psychiatric disorders; and gynecological-obstetrical manifestations. The association between CeD and extra-GI manifestations is frequently overlooked, which leads to a delay in diagnosis. Most CeD-mediated disorders can be treated with a strict gluten-free diet (GFD), but some of them are irreversible unless CeD is diagnosed in time. Some manifestations can be classified as risk factors for CeD, and CeD screening tests for affected patients should be selectively considered. Apart from gastroenterologists, specialists in other medical disciplines can play an important role in identifying people with unrecognized CeD and may help prevent its progress and long-term complications. Further comprehensive investigations are necessary to clarify the pathogenesis of extra-GI manifestations and the effect of a GFD.

Multidisciplinary Training in Dermatology: Exploring the Spectrum of Board Certifications Among Physicians Practicing Dermatology in Texas.

Dermatology, a medical specialty focused on skin, hair, and nail conditions, often overlaps with various medical specialties. Although most physicians practicing dermatology are board-certified in dermatology, there are physicians practicing dermatology who are board-certified in a variety of different medical specialties. This cross-sectional study examines the board certifications of physicians who reported practicing dermatology in Texas. Data were sourced from the Texas Medical Board database updated in August 2023. The data showed that out of 1,614 practicing physicians declaring dermatology as a specialty in Texas, 1,080 (66.91%) physicians had one board certification, 200 (12.39%) had two, and 15 (0.93%) had three. Of the physicians with one board certification, 1,053 (97.5%) were board-certified in dermatology, with the remainder primarily being a mix of a variety of primary care specialties but also including other specialties. This study confirmed that while the vast majority of physicians practicing dermatology are board-certified in dermatology, there are opportunities for physicians board-certified in other specialties to practice dermatology as well.
