Irregular widening of the intercondylar notch of the distal femur is considered characteristic and, by some, an almost specific feature (Johnson, Davis and Bullock, 1954; Moseley, 1963) of haemophiliac (and similar bleeding disorders) arthropathy. The synovial proliferation in juvenile and adult rheumatoid arthritis is known to produce marginal bone erosions similar to haemophilia. Moseley (1963) and Johnson et al. (1954) feel that widening of the intercondylar notch is not seen in rheumatoid arthritis, but Boldero and Kemp (1966) state that this can occur. Other possible aetiologies of this radiographic finding are not discussed by most authors or texts.
