African Vultures Don’t Follow Migratory Herds: Scavenger Habitat Use Is Not Mediated by Prey Abundance

The ongoing global decline in vulture populations raises major conservation concerns, but little is known about the factors that mediate scavenger habitat use, in particular the importance of abundance of live prey versus prey mortality. We test this using data from the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in East Africa. The two hypotheses that prey abundance or prey mortality are the main drivers of vulture habitat use provide alternative predictions. If vultures select areas based only on prey abundance, we expect tracked vultures to remain close to herds of migratory wildebeest regardless of season. However, if vultures select areas where mortality rates are greatest then we expect vultures to select the driest regions, where animals are more likely to die of starvation, and to be attracted to migratory wildebeest only during the dry season when wildebeest mortality is greatest. We used data from GSM-GPS transmitters to assess the relationship between three vulture species and migratory wildebeest in the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. Results indicate that vultures preferentially cluster around migratory herds only during the dry season, when herds experience their highest mortality. Additionally during the wet season, Ruppell’s and Lappet-faced vultures select relatively dry areas, based on Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, whereas White-backed vultures preferred wetter areas during the wet season. Differences in habitat use among species may mediate coexistence in this scavenger guild. In general, our results suggest that prey abundance is not the primary driver of avian scavenger habitat use. The apparent reliance of vultures on non-migratory ungulates during the wet season has important conservation implications for vultures in light of on-going declines in non-migratory ungulate species and use of poisons in unprotected areas.

The early bird gets the carcass: Temporal segregation and its effects on foraging success in avian scavengers

ABSTRACT Temporal segregation is known to be an important mechanism of coexistence in many foraging guilds but has not been examined in avian scavengers. Given that carrion availability is higher in the morning than in the afternoon and that differences in wing-loading and nesting behavior may limit morning activity in some species, there is potential for temporal segregation in resource use to play an important role in the coexistence of avian scavengers. I predicted that Lappet-faced Vultures (Torgos tracheliotos), which have lower wing-loading and lower competitive abilities, would have higher abundance at carrion resources in the morning than White-backed Vultures (Gyps africanus) and Ruppell's Vultures (G. rueppellii). Report on rare birds in Spain 2011. Current report gives details about 452 new records on the presence of 100 rare bird taxa in the whole of Spain. Acceptance index was of 88,94% from a grand total of 579 examined records including pending, duplicated and regional rarities. Details on 12 new taxa for Spain are included for the first time in any rarities report: Asian white-winged scoter Melanitta deglandi, Fea's petrel Pterodroma feae, first and second records, black-bellied storm-petrel Fregetta tropica, eastern imperial eagle Aquila heliaca, sandhill crane Grus canadensis, south polar skua Stercorarius maccormicki, Thayer's Gull Larus thayeri, american hawk-owl Surnia ulula caparoch, buff-bellied pipit Anthus rubescens, eastern black redstart Phoenicurus ochruros phoenicuroides, semicollared flycatcher Ficedula semitorquata and Cretzchsmar's bunting Emberiza caesia. Deserta's petrel, Thayer's gull and hawk owl are new to the Spanish list which was updated in 2012 having considered the rest of the above accepted firsts. The report deals with record numbers of goosander Mergus merganser, buff-breasted sandpiper Tryngites subruficollis and pectoral sandpiper Calidris melanotos besides overwintering episodes of Baird's sandpiper Calidris bairdii and broad-billed sandpiper Limicola falcinellus. Other interesting records are third records for Spain of African white-backed vulture Gyps africanus, upland sandpiper Bartramia longicauda or Baltic gull Larus fuscus fuscus.

Factors Influencing Foraging Search Efficiency: Why Do Scarce Lappet-Faced Vultures Outperform Ubiquitous White-Backed Vultures?

The search phase is a critical component of foraging behavior, affecting interspecific competition and community dynamics. Nevertheless, factors determining interspecific variation in search efficiency are still poorly understood. We studied differences in search efficiency between the lappet-faced vulture (Torgos tracheliotus; LFV) and the white-backed vulture (Gyps africanus; WBV) foraging on spatiotemporally unpredictable carcasses in Etosha National Park, Namibia. We used experimental food supply and high-resolution GPS tracking of free-ranging vultures to quantify search efficiency and elucidate the factors underlying the observed interspecific differences using a biased correlated random walk simulation model bootstrapped with the GPS tracking data. We found that LFV's search efficiency was higher than WBV's in both first-to-find, first-to-land, and per-individual-finding rate measures. Modifying species-specific traits in the simulation model allows us to assess the relative role of each factor in LFV's higher efficiency. Interspecific differences in morphology (through the effect on perceptual range and motion ability) and searchers' spatial dispersion (due to different roost arrangements) are in correspondence with the empirically observed advantage of LFV over WBV searchers, whereas differences in other aspects of the movement patterns appear to play a minor role. Our results provide mechanistic explanations for interspecific variation in search efficiency for species using similar resources and foraging modes.

Foraging Ranges of Immature African White-Backed Vultures (Gyps africanus) and Their Use of Protected Areas in Southern Africa

Vultures in the Gyps genus are declining globally. Multiple threats related to human activity have caused widespread declines of vulture populations in Africa, especially outside protected areas. Addressing such threats requires the estimation of foraging ranges yet such estimates are lacking, even for widespread (but declining) species such as the African white-backed vulture (Gyps africanus). We tracked six immature African white-backed vultures in South Africa using GPS-GSM units to study their movement patterns, their use of protected areas and the time they spent in the vicinity of supplementary feeding sites. All individuals foraged widely; their combined foraging ranges extended into six countries in southern Africa (mean (± SE) minimum convex polygon area = 269,103±197,187 km2) and three of the vultures travelled more than 900 km from the capture site. All six vultures spent the majority of their tracking periods outside protected areas. South African protected areas were very rarely visited whereas protected areas in northern Botswana and Zimbabwe were used more frequently. Two of the vultures visited supplementary feeding sites regularly, with consequent reduced ranging behaviour, suggesting that individuals could alter their foraging behaviour in response to such sites. We show that immature African white-backed vultures are capable of travelling throughout southern Africa, yet use protected areas to only a limited extent, making them susceptible to the full range of threats in the region. The standard approach of designating protected areas to conserve species is unlikely to ensure the protection of such wide-ranging species against threats in the wider landscape.

Population estimates of three vulture species in Kruger National Park, South Africa

Vultures are globally threatened, yet reliable population data on these birds are few, thus measuring their response to change is difficult. Kruger National Park (KNP) in South Africa is an important stronghold for many avian species, particularly vultures. In this study we generate population estimates for three vulture species in KNP using two plotless density estimators (PDE): a distance estimator based on nearest-neighbour distance and T-square sampling. We flew aerial censuses over large (c. 3 500 km2) sample areas in two ecogeographically separate parts of KNP and counted vulture nests visible within predetermined transects. In total 416 White-backed Vulture Gyps africanus, 22 Lappet-faced Vulture Torgos tracheliotos and 24 White-headed Vulture Trigonoceps occipitalis nests were recorded. The nearest-neighbour distance PDE performed poorly, and we used a T-square PDE calibrated with aerial survey counts to extrapolate across KNP and estimate breeding population sizes. There are an estimated 904 (95% CI±162) pairs of African White-backed Vultures, 78 (95% CI±18) pairs of Lappet-faced Vultures and 60 (95% CI±13) pairs of White-headed Vultures in KNP. These results provide a basis for investigating how large vultures respond to ecosystem change and understanding their resilience within a broader environmental change scenario.

Nesting patterns of raptors; White backed vulture (<i>Gyps africanus</i>) and African fish eagle (<i>Haliaeetus vocifer</i>), in Lochinvar National Park on the kafue flats, Zambia

This study assessed the nesting patterns of raptors, Gyps africanus and Haliaeetus vocifer in Lochinvar National Park. The main objective of the study was to determine whether tree species, height, girth size, and habitat influenced raptor’s nest placement within Lochinvar National Park. Two species were selected as indicator species for the raptors. Habitat types and tree species were identified and measurements of tree species with nests measured. It was found that the minimum height of nest placement was 10 meters above ground and Acacia woodland was found to be the most preferred habitat for nest placement. Raptors avoided human disturbance by placing their nests at least 100 meters away from human disturbance and from the National park boundary inwards or abandoning if human encroachment comes close to the nest. More research is required to assess nesting materials used, and to determine whether raptors can swap nets or return to the abandoned nests when human disturbance ceases.

Levels of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, and Organochlorine Pesticides in Various Tissues of White-Backed Vulture in India

This study provides information on the current status of contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the tissues of endangered White-backed Vulture Gyps bengalensis in India. Chemical analyses revealed detectable amounts of PAHs, PCBs, and OCPs. Concentration ranges of ∑PAHs, ∑PCBs, and ∑OCPs in tissues were 60–2037 ng/g, 30–5790 ng/g, and 3.2–5836 ng/g wet weight, respectively. 1,1-Dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethylene (p,p′-DDE) concentrations ranged from below detectable level to 599 ng/g wet weight, representing more than 90% of the total dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT). Among the various OCPs analyzed, p,p′-DDE was detected most frequently. All the contaminants recorded show higher accumulation in liver than other tissues. Levels of contaminants measured in the tissues of vulture are comparable with the levels documented in a number of avian species and are lower than those reported to have caused deleterious effects. Although no threat is expected from the current level of contamination, the presence of varying levels of contaminants and their additive or synergistic toxicity is a cause of concern to vultures. Values reported in this study can serve as guideline for future research.

Alternative strategies in avian scavengers: how subordinate species foil the despotic distribution

Trade-offs in species’ traits can mediate competition and enable coexistence. A key challenge in ecology is understanding the role of species’ trade-offs in maintaining diversity, and evolutionary trade-offs between the abilities of competing species are best understood by considering how competitive advantages change along an environmental gradient. Previous studies of such trade-offs are generally limited to two-species systems and a single trade-off. In this study, I consider the effect of trade-offs in search efficiency and competitive abilities on habitat use patterns among a diverse avian scavenger guild. I hypothesize that species’ dominance status and search efficiency will both be correlated with patch quality. Using counts of searching birds in areas that vary in habitat quality in terms of both wildlife and human settlement density and observations at experimental carcasses, I assess the competitive ability, search efficiency, and habitat use of seven avian scavenger species in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. Findings support the hypothesis with Bateleurs, a species with high search efficiency, and Ruppell’s, Lappet-faced, and White-backed vultures, species with high individual or social dominance, preferentially exploiting habitats of high quality, while Tawny eagles and Hooded vultures, species with low search efficiency and competitive ability, prefer habitats of low quality. This paper demonstrates the importance of considering multiple strategies for assessing the effect of competition on habitat use within complex communities.

The Population Decline of Gyps Vultures in India and Nepal Has Slowed since Veterinary Use of Diclofenac was Banned

Populations of oriental white-backed vulture (Gyps bengalensis), long-billed vulture (Gyps indicus) and slender-billed vulture (Gyps tenuirostris) crashed during the mid-1990s throughout the Indian subcontinent. Surveys in India, initially conducted in 1991–1993 and repeated in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007, revealed that the population of Gyps bengalensis had fallen by 2007 to 0.1% of its numbers in the early 1990s, with the population of Gyps indicus and G. tenuirostris combined having fallen to 3.2% of its earlier level. A survey of G. bengalensis in western Nepal indicated that the size of the population in 2009 was 25% of that in 2002. In this paper, repeat surveys conducted in 2011 were analysed to estimate recent population trends. Populations of all three species of vulture remained at a low level, but the decline had slowed and may even have reversed for G. bengalensis, both in India and Nepal. However, estimates of the most recent population trends are imprecise, so it is possible that declines may be continuing, though at a significantly slower rate. The degree to which the decline of G. bengalensis in India has slowed is consistent with the expected effects on population trend of a measured change in the level of contamination of ungulate carcasses with the drug diclofenac, which is toxic to vultures, following a ban on its veterinary use in 2006. The most recent available information indicates that the elimination of diclofenac from the vultures’ food supply is incomplete, so further efforts are required to fully implement the ban.

Accumulation pattern and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in liver tissues of seven species of birds from Ahmedabad, India, during 2005–2007

Concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in liver tissues of seven species of birds collected from Ahmedabad, India during 2005-2007. All the samples collected were dead as victims of kite flying. Concentrations of ∑PAHs in livers of birds were ranged from 110 ± 32.6 ng/g wet wt (1,078 ± 320 lipid wt) in common myna Acridotheres tristis to 382 ± 90.1 ng/g (2,388 ± 563 lipid wt) in white-backed vulture. Statistically significant (p < 0.05) differences in ∑PAHs were observed among species. However, year of collection and sex of birds did not show significant differences in concentrations of PAHs. The levels of ∑PAHs measured in the present study species were higher than the levels documented for a number of avian species and were lower than those reported to have deleterious effects on survival or reproduction of birds. Presence of PAH residues in birds of Ahmedabad city show the continuous input of PAHs through environmental exposure. Although no threat is posed by any of the hydrocarbons detected, continuous monitoring of breeding colonies of birds is recommended in unpolluted reference sites as well as polluted sites. It is also the first account of a comprehensive analysis of PAHs in various species of birds in India. Therefore, the values reported in this study can serve as baseline values for future research.

Survival of theAfrican white‐backed vultureGyps africanusin north‐easternSouthAfrica

AbstractOld World vultures are in decline across their entire range. Although critical for the formulation of effective conservation measures, neither survival nor movement patterns of African vultures are adequately known. This paper presents survival and movement data on theAfrican white‐backed vultures (Gyps africanus) fromSouthAfrica. Survival estimates were modelled on resightings of tagged vultures. Birds were captureden masseand resighted betweenNovember 2005 andDecember 2010. A total of 93 adult and subadult birds were fitted with uniquely numbered patagial tags, which were resighted 3707 times(mean of 39.8 resightings per bird). The programmeMARKwas used to estimate survival. The best model was one where survival and recaptures varied only with time (e.g. year). However, owing to the fading (illegibility) of tags in later years, the relationship with time is probably spurious. The second best model was one where survival and recaptures varied with age and time. Annual survival estimates increased from 85.2% in second‐year birds to 99.9% in adults. This corresponds well with the survival of two otherGypsvultures that have been studied to date and underscores the point that additional mortality of adults in these long‐lived species will result in rapid population declines.

Diversity and structure of soil bacterial communities associated with vultures in an African savanna

Bird guano has been shown to alter the structure and function of ecological communities. Here we characterize the effects of vulture guano on the phylogenetic structure, taxa richness, and abundance in soil bacterial communities within an African savanna. By altering soil chemistry and nutrient status, vulture guano appears to play a role in influencing the structure of soil bacterial communities. DNA was extracted from soil collected under twenty trees: five African white‐backed vulture (Gyps africanus, WBV) nesting sites, five lappet‐faced vulture (Torgos tracheliotos, LFV) nesting sites and ten control sites where no sign of vulture activity was detected. Using a high‐density phylogenetic microarray (PhyloChip G2), we identified 1,803 bacterial Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) in the twenty samples. Analysis of beta‐diversity using the Unifrac distance metric demonstrated that WBV nesting sites were phylogenetically distinct from both control trees and LFV nesting sites. We detected a higher degree of phylogenetic clustering in soil bacterial communities associated with both WBV and LFV nesting sites compared to control sites, suggesting that the deposition of guano increases the strength of habitat filtering in these communities. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that variation in OTU intensity (a measure of relative abundance) could be related to variations in pH, electrical conductivity and total nitrogen content. WBV sites explained 10% to 22% of the variation in OTU intensity. The elevated total nitrogen and lower pH characteristic of soils associated with vultures may favor Proteobacteria and suppress Firmicutes, particularly Clostridia and Bacilli. Acidic aggregations of vulture guano may be unlikely to support long‐term survival of spore‐forming Firmicute pathogens and thus may limit the role that vultures play as potential disease vectors.

Population status and habitat-use pattern of Indian white- backed vulture (Gyps bengalensis) in Himachal Pradesh, India

Studies on population status and habitat-use pattern of Indian White-backed Vulture (Gyps bengalensis) in Himachal Pradesh revealed the presence of 22 nesting colonies of this species, supporting 77 nests, of which, only 56 pairs bred successfully during breeding season (October to March/April) in 2010 to 2011. Breeding success increased from around 56% (2009 to 2010) to around 73% (2010 to 2011), indicating a slight increase of 16%. A clear tendency for nest sites of Indian White-backed Vulture to be located within well-foliaged pine trees along watercourses in pure chir pine forests, on slanting hilly tract, with the nest placed in a prominent fork within the tree canopy was reported during present study. All the nests of Indian White-backed Vulture were recorded on pine trees Pinus roxburghii. Most of the breeding sites of Indian White-backed Vultures in Himachal Pradesh were reported around the roads therefore, human activity and motor interference was a cause of the concern. Seasonal variation in breeding Rüppell’s Vultures Gyps rueppellii at Kwenia, southern Kenya and implications for conservation

SummaryVulture populations have been declining globally and regionally within Africa. Rüppell’s Vulture Gyps rueppellii is currently listed as ‘Near Threatened’ and numbers of the species, along with African White-backed Vultures G. africanus, have declined by 52% in and around the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. A large breeding colony of Rüppell’s Vulture at Kwenia, southern Kenya, was monitored between 2002 and 2009. Around 150–200 adults were present on each visit, with up to 64 simultaneously active nests. The date of egg-laying differed considerably between years, with two discrete breeding attempts in some years. Nests were not positioned randomly across the cliff face and the number of active nests was related to rainfall in the previous year. The large ungulate migration of the Mara-Serengeti provides a vital foraging ground for the species. Conservation implications of the loss of vultures are discussed.

Assessing Mortality of African Vultures Using Wing Tags and GSM-GPS Transmitters

Abstract We used GSM-GPS transmitters to study mortality in three species of vultures in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. GSM-GPS transmitters were a cost-effective alternative to traditional satellite telemetry. In combination with data from a wing-tagging study, GSM-GPS units provided evidence of high mortality in African vultures, particularly White-backed Vultures (Gyps africanus) and Lappet-faced Vultures (Torgos tracheliotos). Four of seventy-eight wing-tagged vultures were reported dead in a 6-yr period following attachment, whereas 4 of 17 GSM-GPS-tagged vultures were confirmed dead within a year of attachment, based on collection of dead bird or unit, indicating annual mortality of up to 33% for some species in East Africa. Poisoning was confirmed as the cause of death in four of these cases and was suspected in the majority of deaths recorded.

Bacterial enteritis in an oriental white backed vulture (Gyps bengalensis) and its successful management

An oriental white backed vulture weighing about 8 kg was rescued from a farmer’s field in a moribund condition. The vulture was showing signs of drooping feathers and wings, anorexia, unable to stand, and severe enteritis with dehydration. Bacterial culture from the cloaca of the bird revealed association of hemolytic E. coli that was sensitive to enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin. The bird was treated successfully with injectable enrofloxacin and oral rehydration solution. No parasitic eggs/protozoal oocysts or hemoprotozoan parasites could be detected in the bird. The bird recovered uneventfully and started taking feed and water normally.
