The purpose of this paper is to examine the pronunciation-related instructions in the five Elementary English Teachers’ Guide Books for 3rd and 4th graders. The examinations were made in terms of the way Korean young learners at the beginning tend to perceive English sounds and the way English vs. Korean phonemes and allophones are understood in the books. As a result, it was found that all the books payed little attention to the fact that learners may hear with ‘Korean ears’ and perceive English sounds as the closest one in the Korean phoneme list, causing their pronunciation errors. Also, practically no instructions for allophonic awareness were found, which may cause confusion between the sounds learners were taught and what they actually hear.
