Designing toys for older adults: Integrating learning theories to address needs

ABSTRACT With advancements in science, technology, and healthcare, senior citizens today face extended retirement periods of 15–35 years. However, many experience challenges such as declining physical and mental functions, which often lead to depression and reduced self-esteem. This study aims to explore the design elements and needs of older adult toys by integrating older adult learning theories to promote successful, healthy, and active aging. Using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, we analyzed expert interviews and applied multivariate statistical techniques, including descriptive statistics and independent sample t-tests, to assess the physical, psychological, and lifestyle needs of older adults. Additionally, we examined older adults’ attitudes and behaviors toward toys, leading to the identification of key design criteria and preferences. Based on these insights, we developed guidelines for designing toys that support the aging process and proposed a model to predict future market trends. The findings offer valuable guidance for the toy industry in fostering innovation and sustainable development.

Measuring the Impact of Parent Brand Equity on Brand Extension: A Luxury Fashion Industry Perspective

In a diversified consumer society with extreme product homogeneity and fierce competition, many luxury fashion brands try to broaden their product offerings. Although brand extension is now highly common, it is not always met with success. Indeed, incorrect evaluations of brand equity can lead to consumer dissatisfaction with extended products, thus losing the opportunity to extend in the target market. On the other hand, previous studies have repeatedly verified the influence of the extended brand on the parent brand’s equity. Accordingly, few studies have concentrated on the influence of the parent brand’s equity on the extended brand, especially in the field of luxury fashion brands. Therefore, this study employs the brand equity model, including brand loyalty, awareness, perceived quality, and association, and measures the influence of parent brand’s equity on the extended brand from a consumer perspective. In this study, data from 151 consumers who have purchased luxury fashion products in Kuala Lumpur were collected through quantitative methods and the results were obtained by a simple linear regression analysis of SPSS. The results showed statistical significance with p<0.05 which revealed that the parent brand's equity had a significant positive impact on its extended brand while most studies focused on the impact of the extended brand on the parent brand. Simply put, this research not only makes a theoretical contribution to the parent–extended brand relationship but also fills knowledge gaps in related fields. Moreover, based on the empirical results, this study proposes a series of suggestions for correctly measuring brand equity to facilitate smoother brand extension, providing practical guidance for the luxury fashion industry.

How dark traits and regulatory focus manifest in online hotel reviews: a textual content analysis

ABSTRACT This study seeks to explore how Dark Triad of psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism interact with consumers’ regulatory focus (prevention-focus and promotion-focus) to influence online consumer reviews in the hotel industry. We conducted an empirical analysis of 1,185,940 hotel reviews from TripAdvisor.com, utilizing the textual content of online reviews and employing Language Inquiry and Word Count analytical tools. The research reveals a multifaceted link between regulatory focus and Dark Triad in online reviews. The results showed that individuals with a promotion focus tend to give higher ratings than those with a prevention focus. Dark Triad significantly influences how regulatory focus impacts online reviews. This study initiates a new academic dialogue on the interaction between regulatory focus and Dark Triad traits within online consumer behavior studies. It provides practical guidance for the hotel industry to refine their management and response strategies by acknowledging the impact of consumer personality traits on online reviews.

Factors influencing the digital intelligence transformation of offshore wind power enterprise

China's offshore wind power industry is advancing toward a digital transformation, and its development is considered a crucial strategic pillar of China's energy structure transformation. Facing challenges such as high costs, technical difficulties, lack of industry standards, insufficient industrial economies of scale, and even ecological threats, China's offshore wind power industry in the new period urgently requires innovative paths for further development. Driven by policy guidance and market demand, many enterprises have embarked on digital upgrading by introducing digital technology into their business processes, thus achieving a more efficient and intelligent production management mode to enhance industry competitiveness. However, due to the inherent peculiarities of the offshore wind power industry, its implementation of digital technology faces certain technical difficulties and systemic risks. This study presents a case study of Mingyang Smart Energy and related organizations conducted using in-depth interviews, and focuses on the practical circumstances of China's offshore wind power industry undergoing digital transformation. This study also applies the grounded theory to analyze the driving factors and mechanisms of digital transformation and provides an in-depth discussion of the characteristics of different stages of the transformation, including digital technology function leap, management and platform construction, as well as digital operation and value creation. The study results can enrich the theoretical study of digital transformation and provide practical guidance for the offshore wind power industry to achieve intelligent, efficient, and sustainable development.

Carbon offset payment intentions in aviation industry: Altruism vs. Egoism and airline sustainability

Purpose The issue of excessive carbon emissions continues to be a critical global challenge. As a prominent mode of transportation for long-distance travel, aircraft is widely acknowledged as a significant source of these emissions. Carbon offset initiatives function as ecological measures, helping to reduce the negative environmental impact. This study aims to explore how benefit appeals (BA) within the aviation industry impact tourists’ carbon offset payment intentions (COPIt). Design/methodology/approach In Studies 1 and 2, scenario-based experiments were conducted to explore how goal framing (GF) and (BA) interact to influence COPIt. Study 2 further investigated the mediating roles of moral responsibility and trust in airlines within this interaction. Study 3 used real-world surveys to examine the moderating influence of moral elevation, thereby supporting the interactive effects and mediation mechanisms identified in the earlier studies. Findings Across three studies, the authors consistently identified pivotal factors shaping COPIt in the context of air travel. Study 1 revealed that the combination of BA and GF significantly impacts COPIt, with egoistic appeals linked to loss framing and altruistic appeals connected to gain framing being particularly effective in encouraging COPIt. Study 2 extended these insights by showing that moral responsibility and trust in airlines serve as mediators between BA, GF and COPIt. In Study 3, moral elevation was found to moderate the influence of BA and GF on both moral responsibility and COPIt, deepening the understanding of these dynamics. Originality/value This study expands the range of factors affecting COPIt and delves into the underlying mechanisms through which BA and GF shape COPIt. Additionally, it advances current understanding by revealing the intricate processes influenced by moral elevation. The findings not only contribute to the existing knowledge on COPIt determinants but also offer practical guidance for the aviation industry and related sectors in promoting tourists’ participation in carbon offset programs.

Integrating Resource-Based Theory and Contingency Theory for Enhancing Supply Chain Resilience in Malaysia: A Post-Pandemic Analysis

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted global supply chains, exposed their vulnerabilities and underscored the urgent need for enhanced resilience. In Malaysia, the pandemic's impact on supply chains has been profound, prompting a re-evaluation of existing strategies and frameworks. This study explores the integration of Resource-Based Theory (RBT) and Contingency Theory (CT) to enhance supply chain resilience in Malaysia. Through in-depth case studies and semi-structured interviews with senior managers and supply chain professionals, this research identifies key factors contributing to the successful implementation of an integrated resilience framework. The findings reveal that firms leveraging advanced technology, skilled workforce, and strategic partnerships can maintain operational efficiency and adaptability. Context-specific strategies such as diversifying suppliers, local sourcing, strategic stockpiling, and flexible logistics solutions are essential in responding to disruptions. Common challenges include high initial costs, coordination issues, regulatory hurdles, and cultural resistance to change. The integration of RBT and CT results in improved supply chain visibility, flexibility, robustness, and stakeholder collaboration. This study contributes to the academic discourse by offering practical insights for firms seeking to enhance supply chain resilience. It underscores the importance of combining internal strengths with adaptive strategies tailored to the external environment. The findings provide valuable guidance for both academia and industry in developing more robust and adaptive supply chain strategies in the post-pandemic landscape. Future research should explore the integration of RBT and CT across different contexts and industries and investigate the role of emerging technologies in enhancing supply chain resilience.

Different drying methods' effects on the nutritional components and flavor of fruits

With the continuous development of food processing technologies, drying techniques have become increasingly important in fruit processing. Different drying methods have significant impacts on the nutritional components and flavor of fruits, directly affecting the nutritional value and market competitiveness of the products. This paper reviews the principles, technical characteristics, and effects of four main drying technologies—hot air drying, freeze drying, vacuum drying, and microwave drying—on the nutritional components and flavor of fruits. By comparing the retention effects of these drying methods on vitamins, minerals, dietary fibers, and antioxidants, the paper explores future research directions and suggests technical optimization strategies. The study indicates that different drying technologies have varying advantages and disadvantages in terms of nutrient retention, flavor preservation, and drying efficiency. Strategies such as multi-factor optimization, technological combinations, and exploration of new drying technologies are proposed to provide valuable references and guidance for the fruit processing industry.

Hazardous drugs represented by antineoplastic drugs have clear health hazards to occupational exposed populations, and this issue has received widespread attention all over the world in recent years. This article reviewed the laws, regulations, guidelines, and industry guidance documents for the prevention and control of occupational exposure to hazardous drugs issued by relevant departments and associations in the United States. It could provide a reference basis for the development of occupational environmental health standards and protection guidelines, with the aim of reducing the risk of occupational exposure to hazardous drugs and promoting the healthy development of healthcare services in China.

Background: Patient experiences with injection devices may affect treatment adherence, and hence it is important to ensure patient-reported outcomes (PRO) instruments used to assess experience are supported by evidence of validity. As part of a study that compared patient preference and ease of use between the devices used to administer Somapacitan (Sogroya®, Novo Nordisk A/S) and Somatrogon (Ngenla®, Pfizer), we assessed relevance, comprehensiveness and comprehension of a PRO instrument, the Device Handling and Preference Assessment Questionnaire (DHPAQ), in adolescent patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) and their caregivers. Methods: We recruited 33 adolescent patients with GHD and 37 caregivers across five sites in the US for an open label, randomized, crossover study in which participants simulated an injection with each device using an injection pad or mannequin. The DHPAQ was used to assess patients’ device preference. Two-sided statistical tests with 5% significance levels were performed using DHPAQ responses. After completing the DHPAQ, a random subgroup of 10 adolescents and 10 caregivers were offered additional compensation to participate in a cognitive interview (CI). The CIs were conducted in accordance with the US Food and Drug Administration 2022 Principles for PRO Instruments and 2009 PRO Guidance for Industry. Trained interviewers used a structured guide to evaluate questions, statements, tasks and response options in the DHPAQ. Participants’ interview responses for each question were coded and added to summary tables. These summary tables were evaluated by the study team to determine the relevance, comprehensiveness and participant comprehension of instructions, item stems and response options. Results: When asked if any questions in the DHPAQ did not seem relevant to their device experience, all 20 CI participants answered “no”. Questions on “learning how to use the device”, “selecting the correct dose” and “injecting the dose” were ranked as most relevant. Participants responses from the CIs supported perceived comprehensiveness of all DHPAQ items. All CI participants reported comprehension of all test items in the DHPAQ, and only three items did not receive a “no difficulty” response from all 20 participants. In the main study, the number of participants who preferred the somapacitan device was significantly greater than those who preferred the somatrogon device (84.3% vs 12.9%, p<0.0001). More participants found the somapacitan device easy or very easy to use compared with the somatrogon device (98.6% vs 74.3%). Conclusions: The results from the CIs indicated that the instructions, item stems and response options of the DHPAQ were relevant, comprehensive and fully comprehended by all participants. In the main study, patients with GHD and their caregivers were found to prefer the somapacitan device to the somatrogon device. Presentation: 6/2/2024

Individualized medication of venetoclax based on therapeutic drug monitoring in Chinese acute myeloid leukemia patients using an HPLC method.

The aim of this study was to establish a simple and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography method for therapeutic drug monitoring of venetoclax (VEN) and optimize regimens. The analysis required the extraction of a 50 μl plasma sample and the precipitation of proteins using acetonitrile extraction. The chromatographic method employed a mobile phase of acetonitrile: 0.5% KH 2 PO 4 (pH 3.5) (60/40, v/v) on a Diamond C 18 (4.6 mm × 250 mm, 5 μm) column at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min. The quantitative method was validated based on standards described in 'Bioanalytical Method Validation: Guidance for Industry' published by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The calibration curve was linear ( R2 = 0.9998) over the range of 75-4800 ng/ml, with limits of quantification of 25 ng/ml. The coefficients of intraday and interday validation, specificity, recovery, and stability all met the criteria of FDA guidance. The method was successfully applied to analyze VEN concentrations in 30 cases of acute myeloid leukemia patients. The peak concentration ( Cmax ) was 1881.19 ± 756.61 ng/ml, while the trough concentration ( Cmin ) was 1212.69 ± 767.92 ng/ml in acute myeloid leukemia patients. Our study establishes a simple, precise, and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography method for monitoring VEN and confirms its applicability for therapeutic drug monitoring of VEN in hematological cancers.

Methods established for the detection of mineral levels in whole blood by the dried blood spot technique

Mineral are intimately related to human health and disease, and detection of mineral content in the body is of great significance for the diagnosis and prevention of diseases. In this study, we validated the method developed to detect magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and selenium (Se) levels in dried blood spots (DBS). In accordance with the requirements of the guidelines for the Bioanalytical Method Validation Guidance for Industry, we evaluate the linearity, sensitivity, precision, accuracy and selectivity of the developed methods. In addition, Mg, Cu, Fe, Zn and Se were quantified in 195 older adults using DBS technique, and its accuracy was assessed by comparing the results to those detected by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The method has excellent sensitivity and linear range to cover the concentration range of mineral elements in the general population with the required precision, accuracy and selectivity. The correlation coefficients of Mg, Cu, Fe, Zn and Se levels in blood detected by the DBS technique and ICP-MS were 0.638, 0.823, 0.463, 0.728 and 0.751, respectively (all P < 0.05), which indicated that there was a strong correlation between the detection results of the two methods. More than 95 % of the sample results in the Bland-Altman consistency test were within the acceptable limits of agreement (LOA) range, indicating that they had good consistency. DBS technique has good accuracy and reliability in detecting blood mineral levels in the elderly, suggesting potential in the quantification of mineral level in blood.

Expert opinion on design and endpoints for studies on catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation.

Catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) is frequently studied in randomized trials, observational and registry studies. The aim of this expert opinion is to provide guidance for clinicians and industry regarding the development of future clinical studies on catheter ablation of AF, implement lessons learned from previous studies, and promote a higher degree of consistency across studies. Studies on catheter ablation of AF may benefit from well-described definitions of endpoints and consistent methodology and documentation of outcomes related to efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness. The availably of new, innovative technologies warrants further consideration about their application and impact on study design and the choice of endpoints. Moreover, recent insights gained from AF ablation studies suggest a reconsideration of some methodological aspects. A panel of clinical experts on catheter ablation of AF and designing and conducting clinical studies developed an expert opinion on the design and endpoints for studies on catheter ablation of AF. Discussions within the expert panel with the aim to reach consensus on predefined topics were based on outcomes reported in the literature and experiences from recent clinical trials. A comprehensive set of recommendations is presented. Key elements include the documentation of clinical AF, medication during the study, repeated ablations and their effect on endpoint assessments, postablation blanking and the choice of rhythm-related and other endpoints. This expert opinion provides guidance and promotes consistency regarding design of AF catheter ablation studies and identified aspects requiring further research to optimize study design and methodology. Recent insights from studies on catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) and the availability of new innovative technologies warrant reconsideration of methodological aspects related to study design and the choice and assessment of endpoints. This expert opinion, developed by clinical experts on catheter ablation of AF provides a comprehensive set of recommendations related to these methodological aspects. The aim of this expert opinion is to provide guidance for clinicians and industry regarding the development of clinical studies, implement lessons learned from previous studies, and promote a higher degree of consistency across studies.

An Outbreak Investigation of Salmonella Weltevreden Illnesses in the United States Linked to Frozen Precooked Shrimp Imported from India – 2021

In 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state partners investigated a multistate sample-initiated retrospective outbreak investigation (SIROI) consisting of a cluster of nine Salmonella Weltevreden illnesses associated with frozen, precooked shrimp imported from India. Import surveillance testing identified Salmonella Weltevreden recovered from a cooked shrimp sample from Supplier B. In total, nine patients with clinical isolates highly related via whole genome sequencing were reported in four states with illness onset dates between February 26 and July 17, 2021. Epidemiologic data were gathered by state partners for seven patients, who all reported exposure to shrimp. Five patients reported consuming shrimp cocktail from the same retailer. A traceback investigation for five of the six patients converged on Supplier B. This evidence demonstrated that the outbreak of Salmonella Weltevreden illnesses was caused by the consumption of cooked, ready-to-eat shrimp manufactured by Supplier B. At the time of the investigation, outbreak and recall information was shared with Indian competent authorities. In March 2022, a follow-up inspection of Supplier B’s facility in India was conducted, and insanitary conditions and practices were observed. This outbreak investigation highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary national and international public health partnerships. The lessons learned from this investigation should continue to inform investigational activities and food safety guidance for the industry.

Research on the Development Strategy of Wine Enterprises based on ESG Concepts

In recent years, as "carbon neutrality" and "carbon peak" have become hot topics in the international community, low-carbon recycling has gradually become an indispensable element in the high-quality development of the wine industry. From the industry's perspective, actively promoting the green and low-carbon development of the wine industry is the focus of the industry's efforts.2021 In April 2021, the "Fourteenth Five-Year Plan" Development Guidance for China's Wine Industry pointed out that the wine industry should make a comprehensive transition to green ecological development, and for the first time, the "Zero-carbon Appellation" and "Zero-carbon Factory" will be developed. In April 2021, the Guiding Opinions on the Development of China's Wine Industry in the 14th Five-Year Plan pointed out that the wine industry should make a comprehensive transition to green ecological development, and for the first time set "zero-carbon production areas" and "zero-carbon factories" as the construction targets. 2022, the China Wine Association (CWA) completed the formulation of the industry standard for "green T factories" in respect of white spirits and beer, and in 2023, the CWA carried out a study on the GHG accounting methodology and reporting standards for white spirits enterprises. his paper takes Fenjiu Group's ESG practice action as the research object, through collecting and reviewing the annual reports, ESG reports, announcements on the official website of the company, media reports, ESG practice reports of related listed companies and other materials, and conducts a multi-faceted research and analysis based on the theory of strategic management of the enterprise, and puts forward the related sustainable development strategy by combining with the concept of ESG. Transcriptome Analysis Reveals the Variations in Enzyme Production of Saccharopolyspora rosea A22 under Different Temperatures.

Saccharopolyspora is a key microorganism in the fermentation of traditional fermented foods, capable of producing saccharifying and liquefying enzymes at elevated temperatures. However, the specific mechanisms and regulatory pathways governing Saccharopolyspora's response to ambient temperatures are not yet fully understood. In this study, the morphological differences in Saccharopolyspora rosea screened from traditional handmade wheat Qu at different temperatures were initially explored. At 37 °C, the mycelium exhibited abundant growth and radiated in a network-like pattern. As the temperature increased, the mycelium aggregated into clusters. At 50 °C, it formed highly aggregated ellipsoidal structures, with the mycelium distributed on the spherical surface. Subsequently, we assessed the biomass, saccharifying enzyme activity and liquefying enzyme activity of Saccharopolyspora rosea cultured at 37 °C, 42 °C and 50 °C. Furthermore, transcriptome analysis demonstrated that Saccharopolyspora rosea employs mechanisms related to the carbon metabolism, the TCA cycle, glycine, serine and threonine metabolisms, and microbial metabolism in diverse environments to coordinate its responses to changes in environmental temperature, as verified by the expression of typical genes. This study enhances our understanding of the differences in high-temperature enzyme production by Saccharopolyspora, and offers valuable guidance for the traditional fermented food industry to drive innovation.

Quantification of beef in products sold in Canada declaring multiple meat species – Regulatory and consumer implications related to accurate labeling

The match between labeling and consumer’s perception is well studied in the scientific literature, but rarely to assess the relevance of the existing regulatory framework. This work studied (i) consumers’ knowledge and perceptions of meat products’ labeling in Canada through a survey (n = 484; 4 % margin of error) and (ii) beef content in multispecies meat products (n = 68; 58 listing “beef” and 10, “and/or beef”) using qPCR and, for validation of non-detects, ELISA. For products listing beef as an ingredient, respondents expected 50 % beef when declared as the first meat ingredient (42 % respondents), and 25 % in other products (34 % respondents). These expectations were not met in 19/27 products listing beef as first meat ingredient and in 23/31 other beef products, which was perceived as lack of transparency (63 % respondents). Animal DNA was not detected in at least 1 sample in 10/68 of these products. For products with beef as the first of 2 meat ingredients, those with less than 50 % beef/meat mixture (19/27) contravene Canadian regulations on the order of declared ingredients. Furthermore, animal but not beef DNA was detected in at least 1 sample in 9 products. Also, the term “and/or” was not fully understood by respondents (66 %), and was regarded as misleading or potentially misleading (87 %). Thus, we observed a potential disagreement between consumers’ expectations on meat products’ labeling and the level of transparency that can be achieved with current regulations. In particular, the use of “and/or” in meat products warrants further attention, notably regarding consumer education and industry guidance.

Does artificial intelligence improve hospitality employees’ individual competitive productivity? A time-lagged moderated-mediation model involving job crafting and meaningful work

ABSTRACT Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform the hospitality industry. While adopting AI can lead to employee anxiety, less is known about how these affected employees can benefit and become more competitive. This study advances the challenge-hindrance framework in the AI context to investigate how employees respond to the advances of these technologies and the resulting changes in their competitive productivity. Data collected from 235 employees in the hospitality industry through a two-wave method was analysed using PLS-SEM. Findings indicate that although the advancement of AI leads to workplace anxiety, such innovation can trigger job crafting through the conservation of resources theory. These effects can positively impact competitiveness and productivity, particularly for employees who find their work meaningful. This study extends the challenge-hindrance framework and offers guidance for the hospitality industry to better integrate AI for service professionals to become more competitive and productive.
