Evacuation Guidance Design: An Experimental Study Based on Eye Tracking Devices

It is a crucial issue whether evacuees follow the evacuation guidance during evacuation. Good evacuation guidance is necessary to be designed to help the evacuees follow the guidance. In this paper, evacuation experiments based on wearable eye tracking devices were carried out to study the design effect of the evacuation guidance. Three factors were considered in these experiments: 1) the position of the evacuation guidance; 2) follow guidance or follow other evacuees; 3) follow a stranger or a familiar person. The results show that more participants noticed the guidance with low position and ground position than the guidance with up position. The evacuees intend to follow others rather than to follow the guidance, i.e. most evacuees act as “follower”. Eye tracking evacuation experiments can also be used to test the effectiveness of evacuation guidance signs.

ARTS: Automotive Repository of Traffic Signs for the United States

Traffic signs recognition (TSR) is a crucial sub-domain of computer vision, particularly relevant to autonomous vehicles and autonomous driver-assistance systems (ADAS). TSR systems can further augment efforts in many other applications, such as highway asset maintenance and management. Despite the relative success of detectors with hand-crafted features in Europe, most, if not all, non-deep-learning based systems are not scalable to accurately recognize a large subset of traffic signs in the United States. The recent works in the domain of object detection using machine learning have shown the necessity of deep neural networks (DNNs) in TSR, whereby a DNN can learn features automatically without hand-crafting them. Due to the lack of datasets in the U.S. and the inefficient use of traditional methods for traffic sign recognition (TSR) in the U.S., we created the Automotive Repository of Traffic Signs (ARTS), a new dataset for traffic signs recognition in the U.S. ARTS covers a wide range of sign-types, including Regulatory, Guide, Warning, and Temporary signs as defined in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). It also features geospatial data to localize signs using their GPS coordinates. Benchmarks are presented to assess the performance of state-of-the-art deep learning based detectors.

Experimental Research on the Visual Characteristics of Urban Road Landscape Based on Driver’s View

The vision system is the main way for drivers to obtain information. The distribution of urban road landscape is one of the key factors that cause drivers to be visually irritating. This article selects typical urban road landscape environment sections to conduct driver visual search mode experiments, using quantitative evaluation and synthesis The qualitative evaluation method analyzes and compares the obtained eye dynamic data, explores the influencing factors of urban road landscape on the driver’s visual characteristics and the law of visual change. Based on the experimental data, it is proposed that road landscape design should integrate greening design and guidance signs, Urban optimization strategies for building a coherent system of urban road landscapes.

Gallery D.C.: Design Search and Knowledge Discovery through Auto-created GUI Component Gallery

Online communities like Dribbble and GraphicBurger allow GUI designers to share their design artwork and learn from each other. These design sharing platforms are important sources for design inspiration, but our survey with GUI designers suggests additional information needs unmet by existing design sharing platforms. First, designers need to see the practical use of certain GUI designs in real applications, rather than just artworks. Second, designers want to see not only the overall designs but also the detailed design of the GUI components. Third, designers need advanced GUI design search abilities (e.g., multi-facets search) and knowledge discovery support (e.g., demographic investigation, cross-company design comparison). This paper presents Gallery D.C. http://mui-collection.herokuapp.com/, a gallery of GUI design components that harness GUI designs crawled from millions of real-world applications using reverse-engineering and computer vision techniques. Through a process of invisible crowdsourcing, Gallery D.C. supports novel ways for designers to collect, analyze, search, summarize and compare GUI designs on a massive scale. We quantitatively evaluate the quality of Gallery D.C. and demonstrate that Gallery D.C. offers additional support for design sharing and knowledge discovery beyond existing platforms.

Enhancing Role of Guiding Signs Setting in Metro Stations with Incorporation of Microscopic Behavior of Pedestrians

In the metro operation environment, guiding signs provide direction and route conversion instructions to pedestrians. In metro stations with massive passenger flow, the rationality of sign setting would exert distinct effects on the efficiency of passenger flow. Currently, most studies on guiding signs focus on architecture, aesthetics and simulation. However, perspectives from humanization of pedestrian guidance signs such as pedestrian behavior needs and pedestrian cognition were seldom proposed. In this paper, the microscopic behavior characteristics data of pedestrians at different positions in typical metro stations were collected through pedestrian tracking experiments. After analyzing the characteristics of pedestrians’ microscopic behavior in metro stations, otherness of walking speed was found out among pedestrians in different types of passageways. The walking speed of pedestrians in closed-type passageways is higher than other types. Moreover, pedestrian speed at the stairs adjacent to the platform is higher than that at the stairs not adjacent to the platform. With the increase of crowd density, the change of walking speed of pedestrians can be represented by a unimodal curve. Finally, the key points of optimal setting of guiding signs in different regions and different periods were obtained according to the result analysis of the experiment. The research results of this paper can provide theoretical support and technical guidance for the optimal establishment of pedestrian guiding signs in metro stations with massive passenger flow.

Effectiveness of Diagrammatic Guide Signs at Complex Interchanges

The present work investigated if drivers’ interpretation of diagrammatic arrow signs dropped in accuracy as the number of lanes at an interchange increased. A set of diagrammatic arrow signs were shown to 183 participants as part of a slideshow. Participants were prompted with a navigation objective, briefly shown a picture of a diagrammatic arrow sign that communicated the necessary information for navigation, then they were asked to make a navigation decision. The three factors considered were 1) the total number of lanes on the roadway, 2) the parity of lanes included in each of two branches on the sign, and 3) the difficulty of the navigation task decision. When positioned in an edge lane (easy condition), drivers were good at determining where their lane would lead. When positioned in a center lane (hard condition), their navigation performance improved with an odd number of lanes.

Layout of Guidance Signs in Passenger Hubs based on Passenger Activity Line

The layout of guide signs in passenger transport hubs is an important part of the traffic design of transport hubs. Firstly, based on the spatial layout and activity type of passenger transport hub, the functional areas are divided and the active passenger flows are extracted based on the passenger’s moving path, so as to construct the active passenger flow network. Then the hierarchy, level and rank of the guide signs are analysed. Finally, taking a passenger station in Jiangsu as an example, the research can provide theoretical support for the layout of the guiding signs in the integrated passenger transportation hub.

Design of Semantic-Based Colorization of Graphical User Interface Through Conditional Generative Adversarial Nets

ABSTRACT There has recently been a significant movement toward aiding graphic design tasks based on artificial intelligence or machine learning. In addition, colorization plays an important role within the topic of GUI design. Previous studies regarding automatic colorization have focused on a consideration of the realistic aspects of an image without consideration of the design semantics or usability, which are critical aspects for a practical GUI design. We, therefore, propose an end-to-end network for a generative combination of color sets for a GUI design based on the design semantics, while utilizing thousands of actual GUI design datasets acquired from LG Electronics to train the network. By utilizing the GUI design dataset, our network effectively generates color sets for a GUI design by considering various design aspects, such as the usability factors. In detail, we concatenate the textual design concept, characteristics of the application, and usage frequency for the elements of the design semantics. We then construct a conditional generative adversarial net processing of the design semantics as a condition to generate suitable color sets and construct the GUI design based on these sets. The experiments indicate that our proposed method effectively generates color sets for a GUI design based on the design semantics. In addition, our proposed method shows a better score than other methods on a user test conducted to verify the practicality, perception, recognition, diversity, and esthetic features. Moreover, experimental results prove that users can effectively grasp the intended design concept of our generated GUI design with higher top-1, top-2, and top-3 levels of accuracy.

Improving Safety and Efficiency of Roundabouts Through an Integrated System of Guide Signs

A roundabout can improve intersection capacity in some extent by reducing conflict points and traffic delays. However, the complex environment in a large roundabout does not provide essential directional information to motorists. Therefore, drivers must spend more time identifying the exit they want, which may influence the intersection capacity and safety. Using perceptual constancy, a new guide sign system for roundabouts was developed to improve sense of direction. In order to observe how the guide sign system would affect drivers’ sense of direction, a series of driving simulator experiments were conducted to evaluate driving performance. The test results revealed that the guide sign system can effectively improve the accuracy of exit identification and reduce travel time driving through a roundabout despite the gender and age differences among drivers. This paper proposes a continuous and gradual guide sign system for roundabouts that can be used to help improve drivers’ sense of direction, which is beneficial to improve the safety and efficiency of roundabout operations. These findings are indicative of the future development of traffic sign design and practice in a roundabout.

Optimal Layout of Static Guidance Information in Comprehensive Transportation Hubs Based on Passenger Pathfinding Behavior

Passenger orientation (pathfinding) is an important factor in designing the layout of comprehensive transportation hubs, especially for static guidance sign systems. In essence, static guidance signs within the hub should be designed according to passengers’ pathfinding demand, that is, to provide passengers with accurate information at the appropriate location. Therefore, from the perspective of passenger information demand, this study aims to determine the appropriate location and density of static guidance information. Two types of passenger information demand in the pathfinding process are defined in this study: one is generated at the path decision point, where multiple path options exist; the other is at the points between decision points, where pathfinders need to confirm that they are still on the correct path. According to the interaction of pathfinding behavior and guidance information, the abstract relationship model is established between macro-behavioral characteristics and the micro-psychological state. Moreover, based on walking speed analysis, the judgment criterion of passenger psychology in pathfinding is proposed to determine the spatial location and density of guidance information. The analysis results of Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport show that, under the threshold of the speed drop section given in the study, 80% of passenger information demand is satisfied when guidance information spacing is 47 m, and 60% of information demand is satisfied when the spacing is 56 m. The findings presented in this paper can provide a reference for the optimal design of static guidance information in comprehensive transportation hubs.

Dynamic Guidance Sign Design for Passenger Transfer in City Railway Hubs

The congestion state models are established for three traffic modes of city railway hubs. According to visual and psychological characteristics of passengers, a new dynamic guidance sign system is designed to release transfer information. The identification and continuity level of information on guidance signs are evaluated to make the design more reasonable. The research would provide a new design and evaluation method for transfer information guidance system in city railway hubs.

Using GIS to simulate tsunami evacuation guidance signs for the hearing impaired.

The Nankai Trough in Japan has been identified as a geological feature that could cause extensive damage in the event of a major earthquake. In this study, we investigated the impact of effective guidance signs for hearing-impaired individuals requiring special care when escaping to a tsunami evacuation building (emergency evacuation location) using geographical information system (GIS) and viewshed analysis. We selected an area we considered would suffer severe damage following a major earthquake and tsunami; we identified difficulties in the provision of escape routes. Using GIS, we determined the time required for escape and tsunami arrival time if effective signs were installed; we undertook such analysis using the height data of buildings in the target area. With effectively installed guidance signs, the average required evacuation time was 36.88 minutes; without such signs (which is currently the case in the target area), the average time was 47.10 minutes: that would result in citizens getting caught by the tsunami. Installing effective guidance signs would allow hearing-impaired individuals to escape to an evacuation building before being hit by the tsunami.

A High-Precision Moving Target Tracking Algorithm Based on UKF

Since Kalman Filter is not applicable to non-linear systems, a moving target tracking algorithm based on Untracked Kalman Filter (UKF) is proposed. The algorithm performance is analyzed by algorithm principle analysis, building mathematical model of the system, and simulation GUI design. Simulation results show that the algorithm has an expected tracking precision and high reliability in 6-dimensional CA mode, and has a good application prospect.

정보시각화 관점에서의 액티브시니어를 위한 앱 GUI디자인에 관한 연구 -국내 3대 소셜커머스를 중심으로-

우리나라는 인터넷 강국으로서 온라인 쇼핑이 강세이다. 기술의 발달로 스마트폰을 이용한 모바일 쇼핑이 통계 수치상으로 최근 5년 전부터 급격히 늘어나고 있는 추세이다. 특히, 온라인 쇼핑의 새로운 소비자층으로 새롭게 급부상한 '액티브 시니어'세대는 기존의 '실버세대'보다 스마트폰의 이용도가 높다. ‘액티브시니어’는 모바일 기기의 조작에 능숙하며, 모바일 쇼핑을 즐겨한다. 이러한 통계에도 불구하고 ‘액티브시니어’의 국내 3대 소셜커머스 ‘쿠팡’, ‘위메프’, ‘티몬’의 모바일 매출과 접속량을 보면 오라인 쇼핑 부문만 보았을 때 오픈 마켓이나 TV홈쇼핑보다 통계상의 수치가 낮은 것을 알 수 있다. 이러한 특이사항이 모바일 어플리케이션에 많이 의존하고 있는 소셜커머스 플랫폼 성격 때문이라는 가설을 중심으로 정보시각화에 문제점이 있다고 생각되어, 정보시각화 관점에서 앱 정보시각화 GUI 요소를 도출하여 모바일 쇼핑이 주요 콘셉트인 국내 3대 소셜커머스 ‘위메프’, ‘쿠팡’, ‘티몬’의 어플리케이션 메인페이지의 정보시각화 앱 GUI의 문제점을 분석해 보고, ‘액티브시니어’를 위한 앱 GUI 개선점을 찾아 제시하는데 이 논문의 목적이 있겠다.

DLCA 다면분석을 통한 스마트 TV GUI 디자인 평가모델 연구

비약적인 기술발전으로 인해 빠르게 변모하는 사회는 ICT에 기반을 두고 있다. 그 환경에서 주변에 쉽게 접할 수 있는 멀티미디어 기기로 TV, PC 그리고 스마트폰 등의 형태로 발전하며 이는 디스플레이를 기반으로 한 GUI를 기반으로 하고 있다. ICT환경과 상황에 맞는 디스플레이 기기를 이용하여 소비하는 행태를 보이는 것이 콘텐츠 소비 패러다임의 현재라고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 이렇게 다르게 나타나는 GUI 디자인 개발 과정의 다른 점을 기본적으로 인식하고 서로 다른 UI 디자인을 사용자 평가방법을 기반으로 비교 검증하는 점에 초점을 두어 실증 과정을 거쳐 보다 사용자 중심적 인터페이스를 디자인하기 위한 평가모델을 구축한 선행연구를 평가모델로 선정하였다. 이를 통해 스마트 TV GUI 디자인의 체감적 문제의식과 개발평가 프로세스에 대해 알아보고 실험분석을 진행하였다. 본 연구에서는 DLCA 다면평가 선행연구 고찰을 통해 평가요소, 평가유형, 평가방법, 평가척도인 4가지 평가요인에 대해 알아보고, 현재 스마트 TV GUI 구조 현황을 조사 하였다. 이후 스마트 TV GUI 디자인을 DLCA 다면평가에 대입하여 4가지 평가요인에 대한 실질적인 데이터와 LCA 데이 터를 종합하여 DLCA 다면평가 선행연구에 대한 유효성을 검증하였다. 또한, 스마트 TV GUI 디자인 평가에 있어 DLCA 다면평가가 앞으로의 디자인 평가모델로써 기인하는 바를 시사점으로 도출하였다.

Research on Advance Distance of Guide Signs of Expressway Exits Based on UC-win/Road Simulation

To study the advance distance of guide signs of expressway exit, we divide driving behavior in expressway exit into five processes according to the characteristics of the driving psychology principle and drivers' response to signs. A model of guide signs of expressway exit is built to calculate the advance distance of guide signs that meets safety and comfort requirements. The proposed model is established on the basis of the insertion gap travel distance model and isokinetic deviation sine curve model of vehicle lane changing distance. Through the analysis of the setting mode of guide signs, we calculate a reasonable distance for guide signs under different road conditions and different driver characteristics. The proposed model is developed with the UC-win/road and simulated by the Forum8 driving simulator. Simulation results show that only the distance of the advance signs of a two-way four-lane expressway exit is close to the specified value of Road Traffic Signs and Markings, which is reasonable; while for expressway with six lanes and above, the specified value is small.
