The IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering journal contains the peer-reviewed papers presented at the 10th International Conference on Advanced Materials and Structures - AMS 2024. The conference took place between 30.05 to 01.06 2024 at Timisoara, Romania and it was the tenth edition of the scientific event organized by the Department of Materials Engineering and Manufacturing and Department of Mechanics and Strength of Materials from University Politehnica of Timisoara with the support of the Politehnica Foundation, Technical Sciences Academy of Romania and Romanian Academy - Timisoara Branch. Additionally, this tenth edition continues the tradition of previous AMS conferences by providing a platform for researchers, academic staff, young PhD students, and industrial partners to present their scientific achievements in the field of: - Advanced materials-amorphous, nano-structured materials, composites, cellular materials, biomaterials etc.; - Surface engineering; - Modern fabrication, additive manufacturing, joints and recycling technologies; - Materials damage under time-dependent-actions (fatigue, creep, impact, corrosion); - Computational techniques for advanced engineering materials and structures. We hope that our readers find this special issue both interesting and useful. For a new humanism

This guest editorial proposes a ‘new humanism’ in response to the challenges facing traditional humanist thought. Although humanism has been criticized by both left‐wing postcolonial and right‐wing populist viewpoints, it is argued that completely renunciating humanist ideas could have harmful effects. Instead, it proposes a revitalized humanism that disregards the previous humanism's emphasis on novelty and advancement at the price of custom and continuity. This new approach emphasizes rejuvenation rather than repudiation of the past and seeks to relearn coexistence with all planetary beings. It challenges accusations of anthropocentrism and Eurocentrism, proposing a ‘multiversal’ conversation that acknowledges human exceptionalism in speech while respecting diverse voices and regional attachments. The guest editorial concludes by calling for a praxis of study, potentially anthropology, that prioritizes the reproduction of human life and its kinship with other beings over technological advancement.

Animal geographies at the limits: introduction to a special issue

ABSTRACT This piece introduces a special issue tackling the theme of ‘animal geographies at the limits’. An opening section argues that work on ‘animal geography’ in its older zoogeographical guise, but with suggestions of a growing interest in human-animal relations, has long been a feature of the Scottish Geographical Journal. It continues by outlining the background to the current special issue, explaining what the guest editors understand by the ‘limits’ of (now-not-so-) ‘new animal geographies’ as a subfield rooted in academic human geography but with many interdisciplinary connections. It concludes by mapping across from the limits that we have identified into the contributions that follow.

Introduction

The challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic forced individuals to become more inward looking. To facilitate a process of reflection and stimulate and re-energize research within the research community, the guest editors of this special issue planned and implemented an online conference. This Conference served as a platform for researchers from various parts of the world can share initiatives that have enabled or challenged community transformation. It also provided an opportunity for researchers to connect with financial agencies, recognizing that funding is critical during both the research and implementation phases of any recommendations.
