Excellent anti-mildew effect of essential oil impregnation on sliced veneer plybamboo and its anti-mildew mechanism.

Mildew growth in sliced veneer plybamboo poses a significant challenge, particularly in its use for high-end furniture and decor. Traditionally, chemical treatments have been the primary solution though they often raise environmental concerns. Essential oils, with their well-documented antimicrobial properties, have emerged as an important natural and eco-friendly alternative for preventing mildew. These oils inhibit mildew growth effectively while offering a sustainable, non-toxic solution that reduces harm to both the environment and human health. By leveraging essential oils, it becomes possible to extend the lifespan of bamboo products, making them more durable and suitable for broader applications in furniture and decor, all while addressing the ecological limitations of conventional mildew prevention methods.

A Monitoring Device and Grade Prediction System for Grain Mildew.

Mildew infestation is a significant cause of loss during grain storage. The growth and metabolism of mildew leads to changes in gas composition and temperature within granaries. Recent advances in sensor technology and machine learning enable the prediction of grain mildew during storage. Current research primarily focuses on predicting mildew occurrence or grading using simple machine learning methods, without in-depth exploration of the time series characteristics of mildew process data. A monitoring device was designed and developed to capture high-quality microenvironment parameters and image data during a simulated mildew process experiment. Using the "Yongyou 15" rice varieties from Zhejiang Province, five simulation experiments were conducted under varying temperature and humidity conditions between January and May 2023. Mildew grades were defined through manual analysis to construct a multimodal dataset for the rice mildew process. This study proposes a combined model (CNN-LSTM-A) that integrates convolutional neural networks (CNN), long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, and attention mechanisms to predict the mildew grade of stored rice. The proposed model was compared with LSTM, CNN-LSTM, and LSTM-Attention models. The results indicate that the proposed model outperforms the others, achieving a prediction accuracy of 98%. The model demonstrates superior accuracy and more stable performance. The generalization performance of the prediction model was evaluated using four experimental datasets with varying storage temperature and humidity conditions. The results show that the model achieves optimal prediction stability when the training set contains similar storage temperatures, with prediction accuracy exceeding 99.8%. This indicates that the model can effectively predict the mildew grades in rice under varying environmental conditions, demonstrating significant potential for grain mildew prediction and early warning systems.

Bamboo durability: Understanding the combined effect of weathering and mildew infection

Bamboo has been widely used in outdoor applications and heat treatment is a typical industrial technique for improving its durability. Weathering and mildew are the two main types of deterioration that occur on bamboo. However, there are few studies on the deterioration of bamboo properties and degradation mechanism under such combined effect. Therefore, in this study, the effect of weathering on the mildew infection value (MIV) of natural bamboo (NB) and heat-treated bamboo (HB) were compared. The changes in surface color, morphology, and chemical composition of NB and HB during accelerated UV weathering were characterized. Meanwhile, the MIV of bamboo samples after different weathering durations was evaluated and the influencing mechanism was explored. The results revealed that the decomposition of starch and hemicellulose during heat treatment resulted in the generation of levoglucosan and acids, thereby providing a new nutrient source and a more suitable environment for mildew growth. HB exhibited superior color stability and anti-weathering characteristics compared to NB. Moreover, certain photodegradation products from HB demonstrated anti-fungal and anti-weathering properties, which resulted in a temporary resistance to mildew in weathered samples. However, after long-term exposure, the cracks on the surface of HB caused by weathering facilitated the colonization of mildew hypha by releasing inner nutrients, leading to severer mildew infection.

Effects of microclimate on disease prevalence across an urbanization gradient.

Increased temperatures associated with urbanization (the "urban heat island" effect) have been shown to impact a wide range of traits across diverse taxa. At the same time, climatic conditions vary at fine spatial scales within habitats due to factors including shade from shrubs, trees, and built structures. Patches of shade may function as microclimate refugia that allow species to occur in habitats where high temperatures and/or exposure to ultraviolet radiation would otherwise be prohibitive. However, the importance of shaded microhabitats for interactions between species across urbanized landscapes remains poorly understood. Weedy plants and their foliar pathogens are a tractable system for studying how multiple scales of climatic variation influence infection prevalence. Powdery mildew pathogens are particularly well suited to this work, as these fungi can be visibly diagnosed on leaf surfaces. We studied the effects of shaded microclimates on rates of powdery mildew infection on Plantago host species in (1) "pandemic pivot" surveys in which undergraduate students recorded shade and infection status of thousands of plants along road verges in urban and suburban residential neighborhoods, (2) monthly surveys of plant populations in 22 parks along an urbanization gradient, and (3) a manipulative field experiment directly testing the effects of shade on the growth and transmission of powdery mildew. Together, our field survey results show strong positive effects of shade on mildew infection in wild Plantago populations across urban, suburban, and rural habitats. Our experiment suggests that this relationship is causal, where microclimate conditions associated with shade promote pathogen growth. Overall, infection prevalence increased with urbanization despite a negative association between urbanization and tree cover at the landscape scale. These findings highlight the importance of taking microclimate heterogeneity into account when establishing links between macroclimate or land use context and prevalence of disease.

Synthesis and Antibacterial Activity of PCMX Derivative

Abstract: Para Chloro Meta Xylenol (PCMX) is an exceptionally broad spectrum bactericide and preservative with a long established and proven use in controlling bacteria, mildew and fungal growth in a wide range of applications (medical, domestic and industrial). Chloroxylenol, also known as para chloro meta xylenol, is an antiseptic and disinfectant which is used for skin disinfection and cleaning surgical instruments. It is also used within a number of household disinfectants and wound cleaners. Their analogues viz. hybrid / ester molecules also possess various biological activities which prompted us to synthesize a novel analogue for their future application as bioactive molecule. The synthesized compound was characterized by IR, 1HNMR, mass spectral data, elemental analysis and screened for its potential antibacterial activity against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. It shows a promising antibacterial activity.

Realistic simulation of fruit mildew diseases: Skin discoloration, fungus growth and volume shrinkage

Time-varying effects simulation plays a critical role in computer graphics. Fruit diseases are typical time-varying phenomena. Due to the biological complexity, the existing methods fail to represent the biodiversity and biological law of symptoms. To this end, this paper proposes a biology-aware, physically-based framework that respects biological knowledge for realistic simulation of fruit mildew diseases. The simulated symptoms include skin discoloration, fungus growth, and volume shrinkage. Specifically, we take advantage of both the zero-order kinetic model and reaction–diffusion model to represent the complex fruit skin discoloration related to skin biological characteristics. To reproduce 3D mildew growth, we employ the Poisson-disk sampling technique and propose a template model instancing method. One can flexibly change hyphal template models to characterize the fungal biological diversity. To model the fruit’s biological structure, we fill the fruit mesh interior with particles in a biologically-based arrangement. Based on this structure, we propose a turgor pressure and a Lennard-Jones force-based adaptive mass–spring system to simulate the fruit shrinkage in a biological manner. Experiments verified that the proposed framework can effectively simulate mildew diseases, including gray mold, powdery mildew, and downy mildew. Our results are visually compelling and close to the ground truth. Both quantitative and qualitative experiments validated the proposed method.

Cinnamaldehyde Loaded Poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) Microparticles for Antifungal Delivery Application against Resistant Candida albicans and Candida glabrata.

Researchers have explored natural products to combat the antibiotic resistance of various microorganisms. Cinnamaldehyde (CIN), a major component of cinnamon essential oil (CC-EO), has been found to effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and mildew, as well as their production of toxins. Therefore, this study aimed to create a delivery system for CIN using PLGA microparticles (CIN-MPs), and to compare the antifungal activity of the carried and free CIN, particularly against antibiotic-resistant strains of Candida spp. The first part of the study focused on synthesizing and characterizing the PLGA MPs, which had no toxic effects in vivo and produced results in line with the existing literature. The subsequent experiments analyzed the antifungal effects of MPs-CIN on Candida albicans and Candida glabrata, both resistant (R) and sensitive (S) strains and compared its efficacy with the conventional addition of free CIN to the culture medium. The results indicated that conveyed CIN increased the antifungal effects of the product, particularly towards C. albicans R. The slow and prolonged release of CIN from the PLGA MPs ensured a constant and uniform concentration of the active principle within the cells.

TBL Myanmar: Understanding the Barriers to Sale of Dehumidifiers in Emerging Markets

Vipul Murarka, Executive Director of Tropical Biotechnology Ltd. (TBL), was perplexed after looking at the erratic sales of dehumidifiers over the past 3 years since he started in June 2016. Although the number of goods sold was growing until 2019, which gave a marginal increase in revenue earned, the top line was increasing at a decreasing rate, with 10% in the first year, 8% in the second year and 7% in the third year. He could not understand the reasons for these inconsistent sales despite offering quality solutions and having many satisfied clients in the past. Given the torrential rains throughout the year in Yangon, the capital of Myanmar, a dehumidifier was an essential product for factories, yet sales were not picking up as anticipated. Dehumidifiers as an industrial product aided many manufacturing units, as they helped in controlling moisture by extracting water from the air, thus reducing humidity and preventing the growth of mildew. There were myriad manufacturing companies in Yangon because of the availability of cheap labour, yet sales for certain months were flat, with not even one sales call funnelling to final action. These lull periods made Vipul anxious and forced him to think if he had entered the wrong industry. He even thought if the first-mover advantage turned into a disadvantage for him. The initial reason he speculated about this sales barrier was the price, as it was a high-investment product for industrial buyers. However, he also posited to himself that he might not have been able to position the advantages of the product aptly in the minds of the potential buyers. Unable to find a definitive reason for the sales barriers of the dehumidifiers, he approached his friend, Myint Than, an independent consultant and visiting faculty at an MBA institute where he taught sales and marketing strategy courses. Vipul and Myint had to find the reason for the barrier to the dehumidifier sales and eventually make a strategy to overcome these barriers for future growth before deciding the sales target for the year 2020.

Safeguarding serenity: Assessing tree risks and hazards in UMK Jeli Campus for sustainable management

The UMK Campus Jeli, a renowned public university in Malaysia, has been operating for a decade. This study aimed to investigate potential risks and hazards associated with trees located near campus buildings. Such proximity can impact drainage, leading to water pooling that increases the risk of mold and rot formation. This study covered an extensive sampled area of 0.05 km²within the campus area. The Basic Tree Risk Assessment Survey was employed using a quantitative approach to systematically record and categorize information while conducting visual evaluations to assess tree risks. A total of 44 individual trees were recorded, representing 15 different species and 12 families. The Clusiaceae family dominated, accounting for 17% of the recorded trees, while the Malvaceae family constituted the smallest proportion at 2%. Notably, the Prunus avium tree posed the highest risk due to its proximity to buildings, which could potentially lead to mold and mildew growth over time. Implementing the Basic Tree Risk Assessment methodology holds significant value for the management unit at UMK Campus Jeli, providing essential insights for planning and maintaining tree health while preserving the campus's aesthetic appeal.

An effector CSEP087 from Erysiphe necator targets arginine decarboxylase VviADC to regulate host immunity in grapevine

• It firstly reported that the grapevine powdery mildew, Erysiphe necator NAFU1, effector CSEP087 molecular mechanism in interaction between powdery mildew and grapevine. • CSEP087, which is upregulated during En NAFU1 infection contains a secreted signal peptide verified by a yeast secretion assay. Expression of CSEP087 in grape leaves facilitates the powdery mildew growth and suppresses the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in grapevine. • CSEP087 interactes with a grape arginine decarboxylase VviADC, which is screened by yeast two-hybrid system. • Expression of VviADC in grape leaves inhibited the powdery mildew growth and promoted the ROS production during En NAFU1 infection. Grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ) is suffering from the fungal pathogen powdery mildew, which affects grape production worldwide. Powdery mildew secretes a large number of effectors into plant cells, which modulate the innate immune system to promote colonization of the infection. Many studies have been conducted on the interactions between pathogens and plants, but the working mechanism of the effectors in the interaction between powdery mildew and grapevine has not been reported. In this study, we identified the CSEP087 effector from the grapevine powdery mildew isolate, Erysiphe necator NAFU1, which was upregulated during infection and contained a signal peptide that was secreted into the plant cells as verified by a yeast secretion assay. The expression of CSEP087 in grapevine leaves facilitated the growth of powdery mildew and suppressed the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). CSEP087 interacted with VviADC, an arginine decarboxylase from grapevine, as screened by a yeast two-hybrid system. VviADC is a conserved protein in horticultural and model plants, particularly localized at the recognition and catalytic sites of the enzyme active center. The expression of VviADC in grapevine leaves inhibited the growth of powdery mildew and promoted ROS production, including hydrogen peroxide in the plants. In addition, VviADC increases the enzymes related to ROS scavenging activities. Our results demonstrate that the powdery mildew effector CSEP087 targeted VviADC, which is a regulator of hydrogen peroxide production and plant immunity. This finding advances our understanding of the role of effectors in the grapevine-powdery mildew interaction.

Energy-saving drying strategy of spent coffee grounds for co-firing fuel by adding biochar for carbon sequestration to approach net zero

Drying is an important but energy-intensive industrial process, while spent coffee grounds can be used as an abundant and potential biomass waste to replace part of the coal consumption for green fuel production and circular economy. In this study, an energy-saving strategy for efficiently drying spent coffee grounds (SCGs) by adding hygroscopic water chestnut shell biochar with 422% water holding capacity is developed. It is found that the contributions of the thermal conductivity and hygroscopicity of the biochar on the moisture removal of the SCG exhibit a competitive relationship. The hygroscopicity is dominant when the drying temperature is below 50 ℃, whereas the thermal conductivity reigns over the drying process once the drying temperature is equal to or above 50 ℃. To prevent mildew growth with lower drying cost at 105 ℃, the optimum trade-off outcomes of CSCG (i.e., the mixture of SCG and biochar) are the moisture content, water activity, and HHV of 21.71%, 0.60 aw, and 18.88 MJ kg−1, respectively. The S/C mixing ratio of 1 at 105 ℃ and around 20% moisture content has the lowest drying cost of 2.3 × 10−5 USD g−1, which reduces 44% cost compared to SCG with the same conditions. Overall, it was demonstrated that water chestnut shell biochar is a good additive to achieve the energy-saving drying process of SCG, and the dried SCG can be used as a coal co-firing fuel.

Effect of Oxathiapiproline-Famoxadone fungicide and Trichoderma sp. on Control of Downy Mildew and the Growth of Maize

Abstract Downy mildew caused by Peronosclerospora spp. is a major limiting factor in maize production in Indonesia. Susceptible varieties can have yield losses of around 90 to 100%. The continuous use of metalaxyl has triggered resistance to downy mildew. Therefore, it is necessary to have other fungicides that can replace the use of metalaxyl. In this study, the oxathiapiproline- famoxadone was tested in combination with the fungus Trichoderma sp. as an alternative to metalaxyl. This study used a randomized complete block design. The treatments were arranged in a factorial with 2 factors. The first factor was fungicide (without/F0 and with fungicide/F1). The second factor was Trichoderma sp., i.e. T0 (without Trichoderma sp), T1 (Trichoderma sp. 106 spores/ml), T2 (Trichoderma sp. 107 spores/ ml), and T3 (Trichoderma sp. 108 spores/ml). The results showed that oxathiapiproline-famoxadone was able to suppress downy mildew, while the application of Trichoderma sp. did not affect the control of downy mildew and maize plant growth. Fungicide application and Trichoderma sp. 107 spores/ml suppressed disease severity at 7 days after inoculation with Peronosclerospora sp.

Efficient Preparation of Sophorolipids and Functionalization with Amino Acids to Furnish Potent Preservatives.

The development of new preservatives is an ongoing investigation in the food industry, especially those which are safe and environmentally friendly. In this study, biosurfactant sophorolipids (SLs) functionalized with amino acids were developed as efficient preservative agents. SLs were first isolated from fermentation broth by Candida bombicola ATCC 22214, hydrolyzed, and purified by extraction. The typical recovery is around 70%, while the extracted material consists of over 90% deacetylated acidic SLs (SL-COOH). Four types of SL derivatives were then synthesized via dicyclohexylcarbodiimide amidation reactions from prepared SL-COOH. Among the derivatives produced, the arginine SL conjugates (SL-d-Arg) displayed the highest activity against Gram-positive bacteria and fungi and even inhibited the cell growth of Gram-negative bacteria and mildew. Furthermore, the arginine conjugates performed the broadest antimicrobial activity among the derivatives evaluated. The sterilization dosage of the arginine conjugates against the food-spoilage pathogen Bacillus spp. was 63-125 mg/L, in contrast to 250 mg/L for the enterotoxin producer Staphylococcus aureus and 500 mg/L for fungi. More importantly, SL-d-Arg displayed excellent biocompatibility, with a therapeutic index of over 7.94. SL-d-Arg has excellent potential as an alternative to traditional chemical preservatives.

Performance matching between the surface structure of cucumber powdery mildew in different growth stages and the properties of surfactant solution.

Understanding performance matching of pesticide droplets on the surface of cucumber leaves modified by powdery mildew is of practical importance for the agricultural sector. Here, the surface texture and wettability of cucumber leaves covered by powdery mildew were systematically examined using parameters such as micromorphology, physicochemical properties, and liquid droplet contact angle measurements. Our results show that powdery mildew growth can be divided into four distinct stages according to the surface texture characteristics of the diseased cucumber leaves. The three-dimensional (3D) surface structures of powdery mildew layers on cucumber leaves had individual characteristics at different mildew growth stages, among which powdery mildew was more easily spread in the last growth stage, and powdery mildew height was greatest in the NO. 2 growth stage (Sa =425.35 μm). Surface free energy values, static contact angle, and contact angle hysteresis all correlated strongly with the surface characteristics of powdery mildew layers at different growth stages. When the concentration of surfactant reached the critical micelle concentration, the wetting state of AEO-5 solution droplets on the surface of cucumber powdery mildew leaves reached the Wenzel state more easily. The wettability of a droplet on the leaf surface depends on the state of the monomer and micelle in the surfactant solution and the surface characteristics of the powdery mildew-covered leaf. The 3D structure and relative dielectric constant of powdery mildew-covered leaves influenced surface texture characteristics, which in turn controlled the wetting and matching ability of surfactant droplets on diseased leaves. This work provides valuable new insights into the matching of the structure of powdery mildew-covered plant leaves with the properties of surfactant solutions. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Management of Powdery Mildew on Ninebark Using Sanitizers, Biorational Products, and Fungicides

Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) is a popular ornamental shrub and considered a hardy and tough plant that can thrive in different environmental conditions and resist diseases. However, powdery mildew, caused by Podosphaera physocarpi, can severelyaffect ninebark, deteriorating the ornamental value and making them unmarketable. Only a few studies have been done in managing powdery mildew of ninebark. The current study focuses on evaluating and identifying effective products (sanitizers, biorational products, and fungicides) for the management of powdery mildew disease of ninebark. A total of 12 treatments, including nontreated control, were studied. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with four-single ‘Mindia Coppertina®’ ninebark plant per treatment and repeated twice. Powdery mildew disease severity, growth parameters, and phytotoxicity were assessed in the study. All treatments significantly reduced the powdery mildew disease severity and disease progress [area under disease progress curve (AUDPC)] compared with the nontreated control. The treatments, such as azoxystrobin + benzovindiflupyr at 0.17 and 0.23 g·L–1 total active ingredients (a.i.) applied, chlorothalonil + propiconazole at 1.12 mL·L–1 total a.i. applied, azoxystrobin + tebuconazole at 0.11 and 0.16 g·L–1 total a.i. applied, and giant knotweed extract [Reynoutria sachalinensis (0.5 mL·L–1 total a.i. applied)] were the most effective treatments in reducing disease severity and disease progress in both trials. The treatments had no significant effects on the plant growth parameters such as height and width. In Expt. 2, azoxystrobin + benzovindiflupyr and hydrogen peroxide + peroxyacetic acid treated plants showed the low level of phytotoxic symptoms. The phytotoxicity of these two treatments in Expt. 2 could be related to higher environmental temperature during the experimental period.

Artificial neural networks modelling based on visual analysis of coated cross laminated timber (CLT) to predict color change during outdoor exposure

Abstract In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was designed to predict color change based on visual assessment of coated cross laminated timber (CLT) exposed outdoors. Coatings and stains were investigated based on ASTM protocols to assess wood surface visual rating, against checking, flaking, erosion, and mildew growth in the State of Mississippi (USA) during one year (2019–2020). It was hypothesized that accurate ratings would promote precise color prediction by the ANN model. Visual assessment inputs were used to develop the model for predicting total color change (ΔE). The training and validation splits of the network were based on a 10-fold cross-validation technique, and the ANN model performance was assessed on the validation set using mean squared error (MSE), mean average precision (MAE), and coefficient of determination (R 2) after permutation feature importance analysis (PFI). Results indicated that coating was the most important feature in color change model. Erosion, checking and flaking achieved similar importance with an approximate difference of 6%. The ANN model was able to effectively predict color change values based on visual ratings with overall accuracy of 95% on truly unseen data. These findings revealed that coating properties, visual appearance, time of exposure, are associated with discoloration. Accurate visual assessment and a well-trained ANN can successfully provide the desired values of ΔE with a smaller number of complex test procedures.

Preparation and antimicrobial effect of a cinnamaldehyde-based sustained release fumigant tablet for grain storage

Currently, aluminum phosphide tablets have been extensively used as fumigant for grain storage because they could release phosphine that shows highly efficient anti-microorganism. However, phosphine is highly toxic and flammable which usually causes production accidents. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a novel fumigant based on cinnamaldehyde and study its antimicrobial efficacy for grain storage. The novel fumigant tablet was composed of cinnamaldehyde, silica, citric acid and sodium bicarbonate. Results showed that mesoporous silica with ultra-high specific surface area (1036.5 m2/g) served as carrier for cinnamaldehyde. The mixture of citric acid and sodium bicarbonate reacted with moisture to generate carbon dioxide which was helpful to release cinnamaldehyde. As expected, the fumigant tablet displayed a sustained release effect. The in vitro culture experiments showed that cinnamaldehyde had high antimicrobial effect against five fungi including Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus candidus, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium and Penicillium. In the accelerated mildew simulation experiment (temperature: 35 °C, humidity: 98%), the blank group without mildew preventive began to go mouldy after five days, the control group with only cinnamaldehyde became mildew one week later, whereas there was no visible mildew growth in the experimental group with the fumigant tablet after one week. The number of fungal colonies in the blank group and the control group after one week was 8.3 × 104 and 6.5 × 103 CFU/g, respectively, while there were no fungi detected in the experimental group. This cinnamaldehyde-based fumigant tablet is a green and safe mildew preventive, which provides an alternative solution to aluminum phosphide tablet for grain storage.

Effects of temperature and leaf age on conidial germination and disease development of powdery mildew on rubber tree

AbstractPowdery mildew is an important disease of rubber trees worldwide. To assess the effects of temperature and leaf age on conidial germination and disease development, conidia were inoculated onto rubber tree seedlings with leaves at three phenological stages (copper bronze, colour‐changing, and light green) and then incubated at six constant temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35°C). Leaf age did not affect conidial germination (p = .296) whilst temperature did (p < .0001), although conidia were able to germinate at all tested temperatures. The estimated optimal temperature for conidial germination was 23.2°C. Leaf age, temperature, and their interactions had significant effects on conidial infection and hypha number (p < .0001). At 10 and 35°C, more than 2 and 4 days were needed for infection to complete, respectively, compared to <2, 1, 0.5, and 0.5 days for 15, 20, 25, and 35°C, respectively. Sporulation and mildew symptoms were only observed on those inoculated leaves of all stages at 20 and 25°C, and at the copper bronze stage only at 15°C. The latent period on the copper bronze leaves at 15°C was longer (9 days) than at 20 and 25°C (4 days). The latent period at 20 and 25°C increased from 4 to 7 days as the leaf development stage increased from copper bronze to light green. Therefore, temperature affected germination and postgermination growth of rubber tree powdery mildew, whereas leaf age primarily affected postgermination growth of the pathogen.

Powdery mildew is a serious disease of economically important hazelnut crop in Turkey. Hazelnut production has been extremely affected by the disease in terms of quality and quantity. The disease is caused by two different fungi, namely Erysiphe corylacearum and Phyllactinia guttata. E. corylacearum has been shown to be the responsible one predominantly for the recent economic damage. The fungi produce a mycelium network on hazelnut plants before they sporulate and visually detected. Early detection of these pathogens is important for management as well as understanding their spread and epidemics. In this study, a PCR assay was developed for the detection of both pathogens from hazelnut plant leaves by targeting their ribosomal DNA genes in their internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. Two sets of specific primers were designed for the detection of E. corylacearum and P. guttata at an early stage of infection. As a result of PCR, a specific band of 578 bp was observed. The amplicon sequencing confirmed the presence of only E. corylacearum, but not P. guttata. Therefore, this PCR-based test can identify plants that are infected with powdery mildew before they show any visual signs. From there, the infected plants can be treated or removed before the fungus has a chance to produce spores that infect neighboring plants. These results would help tackle the eradication of powdery mildew.
