Managing Growth of Product Lifecycle at Maturity Level: A Systematic Literature Review

Through the synthesis and analysis of 64 papers, from JSTOR, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar data bases, include 2010-2024 of 15 years duration paper works. this systematic literature review identified major themes and provided insights into growth management strategies, marketing tactics, challenges, and opportunities, benefits, that managers confront in their quest to sustain competitiveness and profitability in mature markets. Product diversification, market segmentation, innovation management, cost-effective lifecycle planning, price strategies, market expansion, client retention, alliances, and collaboration are a few examples of important tactics. The difficulties include growing rivalry, market saturation, shrinking profit margins, and shifting consumer tastes. To maintain competition, there are nevertheless still chances to take advantage of economies of scale, brand equity, and customer loyalty. The review's insights deepen our understanding of how businesses may best manage opportunities and overcome obstacles to maximize product lifecycle management at various stages of maturity. By providing a comprehensive understanding of the existing body of knowledge, this review offers valuable insights for practitioners, managers, and researchers aiming to enhance product lifecycle management (PLM) strategies at the maturity level, ultimately contributing to the development of more resilient and adaptive business models and research gaps have identified that enabled to provide future research directions.

Comprehensive Land Use and Land Cover Classification in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar City, Maharashtra, India, Using Satellite Imagery and Machine Learning Techniques

Abstract: In This research presents an extensive analysis of land use and land cover (LULC) classification in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar City, a rapidly expanding urban centerin Maharashtra, India, highly susceptible to climate change. Using remote sensing and GIS techniques, the research evaluates the impact of LULC on ecosystem service values (ESV) over a nine- year period (2013-2021). Satellite-based data were utilized to quantify LULC changes, encompassing Green Area, Buildup Area, Road Area, WaterBodies, and Barren Land. The research employs five distinct classification methods and investigates the effectiveness of pre-processing techniques in improving classification accuracy during selected years (2013, 2016, 2019, and 2021). The performance of Mahalanobis Distance, Maximum Likelihood, Parallelepiped, and Support Vector Machine methods is assessed under both preprocessed and non-preprocessed conditions, using overall accuracy and Kappa accuracy as evaluation metrics. The results reveal consistent enhancements in overall accuracy, with Mahalanobis Distance, Maximum Likelihood, and Support Vector Machine methods demonstrating percentage improvements ranging from 0.43% to 5.08% after preprocessing. Particularly noteworthy are the substantial percentage increases in Parallelepiped Classification, ranging from 23.74% to 53.34%, highlighting the transformative impact of preprocessing on its accuracy. These findings emphasize the necessity for customized preprocessing strategies to refine the precision of LULC classification models, offering valuable contributions to the realms of remote sensing and geospatial analysis. Moreover, the insights gleaned from this research provide crucial guidance for urban growth management and climate resilience strategies in rapidly developing urban areas, making it a valuable resource for sustainable urban planning

Rapid rise in urban sprawl: Global hotspots and trends since 1990

Dispersed low-density development–“urban sprawl”–has many detrimental environmental, economic, and social consequences. Sprawl leads to higher greenhouse-gas emissions and poses an increasing threat to the long-term availability of many vital ecosystem services. Therefore, urban sprawl is in stark contradiction to the principles of sustainable land use and to the need for a sustainability transformation. This study presents the degree of urban sprawl on the planet at multiple spatial scales (continents, UN regions, countries, subnational units, and a regular grid) for the period 1990–2014. Urban sprawl increased by 95% in 24 years, almost 4% per year, with built-up areas growing by almost 28 km2 per day, or 1.16 km2 per hour. The results demonstrate that Europe has been the most sprawled and also the most rapidly sprawling continent, by 51% since 1990. At the scale of UN regions, the highest relative increases in urban sprawl were observed in East Asia, Western Africa, and Southeast Asia. Urban sprawl per capita has been highest in Oceania and North America, exhibiting a minor decline since 1990, while it has been increasing rapidly in Europe, by almost 47% since 1990. The study revealed a strong relationship between urban sprawl and the level of human development as measured by the Human Development Index (HDI). The results suggest that it will be important for a more sustainable future to find a better balance between a high quality of life and using land more sparingly. There is an urgent need to stop urban sprawl, since current regulations and measures in developed countries are apparently not effective at limiting it. Monitoring urban sprawl can serve to guide policy development such as the implementation of targets and limits and to evaluate the effectiveness of urban growth management strategies at mitigating urban sprawl.

Computational assessment of disbond growth behaviour in adhesively bonded wide joints or patch repairs for primary airframe structures

This paper evaluates the applicability of a damage slow growth management strategy to patch repairs or bonded joints of primary aircraft structures established earlier by the authors utilising wide bonded metal joints through a computational study using MSC Marc software. The adhesive element failure criteria was applied to establish the residual static strength of the joint as a function of disbond length. A cohesive zone element model implemented in a Ucohesive subroutine was used to evaluate the strain energy release rates (SERRs) as a function of disbond crack extent and predict the disbond growth in the joint. Similar to the 2D analysis conducted in the past, the results showed that for a wide joint with sufficient static strength safety margin under a typical fatigue loading that would propagate disbond, the disbond growth would be stable within a particular length range. Therefore, the slow growth approach would be viable when the patch is modelled to be large enough to allow expanded damage growth. Furthermore, numerical results on the load redistribution effect indicate an overall significantly slower disbond growth and longer fatigue life of the joint with part width disbond than that with full-width disbond.

How effective are greenbelts at mitigating urban sprawl? A comparative study of 60 European cities

As Europe takes continuous steps towards urbanization, many cities in this continent are affected by the negative repercussions caused by urban sprawl. Among the efforts adopted to overcome urban sprawl and its adverse impacts is the greenbelt policy which is highly popular in several European countries. However, the actual effectiveness of this urban growth management strategy has been disputed. Using a sample of 60 European cities, 30 of which have greenbelts, this study compares (1) changes in urban sprawl in a 9-year time period (2006–2015), and (2) the level of sprawl between the cities with and without greenbelt in 2006 and 2015 separately, to investigate the performance of the greenbelts, applying the metrics of Weighted Urban Proliferation (WUP) and Weighted Sprawl per Capita (WSPC). The results show that (1) greenbelts have been largely effective at slowing down urban sprawl; and in most cases, they have helped reduce sprawl; (2) while urban sprawl decreased also in some cities without greenbelt, the average relative decrease in sprawl was much stronger in cities with greenbelts; (3) greenbelts were somewhat more beneficial in limiting urban sprawl in cities with larger population sizes; (4) the effectiveness of greenbelts was mainly due to the reduction of land uptake per person, i.e., through densification of the built-up areas. These findings are useful to inform future de-sprawling strategies in urban and regional planning as well as the formulation of new scenarios and of targets and limits to urban sprawl in support of more sustainable forms of urban development.

‘Hot cities’ and rapid growth; experiences and responses of urban planning departments

AbstractIt is presumed that rapidly growing ‘hot cities’ adapt their planning and operations to meet their evolving population's needs. These presumptions inspired the development of the following mixed‐method, convergent parallel study. Data from urban planning officials across nine rapidly growing ‘hot cities’ were collected through pre‐interview surveys and qualitative key‐informant interviews. Thematic analysis was used to identify salient issues regarding awareness and perception of rapid population growth and the resulting response from their departments. Results indicate two main themes; Multidimensional Strain and Mitigation Strategies describe city experiences with rapid population growth effects and response. Across cities, urban planners expressed similar experiences of stress on land usage, housing, transportation, programing, and service delivery. Similar response patterns included evaluation and innovation of growth management strategies, enhanced collaboration, and equity considerations. This snapshot of rapid population growth repercussions and current city mitigation strategies may have future implications for public health and urban planning administrators in practice. Results shared also indicate how population data use and sharing can support Mitigation Strategies and impact community health.

Fuzzy cognitive model of agricultural economic growth

Agrarian growth is becoming increasingly important to many countries as the global demand for food rises, natural resources become scarcer, and environmental problems deepen. Herein, I propose a mechanism for designing agricultural growth management strategies that is based on fuzzy cognitive logic. The research presented is built on three main findings. First, it integrates established theories of economic growth, economic cyclicality, and sectoral market theories into a model of agricultural growth management. This enables the identification of main growth factors and the determination of the nature of their effects on agricultural dynamics. Second, I develop an algorithm for cognitive analysis of agricultural growth management and justify both this mathematical apparatus and the tools it uses. And third, I conduct a computational experiment that applies cognitive technologies to generate what I believe is the best agricultural economic growth strategy for Russia.

Spatial Analysis of the Empirical Behavior of Municipal Institutional Capacity for the Formulation of Sustainable Growth Management Strategies with a Regional Focus: State of Veracruz, Mexico

As a governmental function, development for progress and welfare is a highly complex process that involves updating various attributes (such as a paradigm, critical or alternative, depending on of the way in which they are articulated regarding social aspects, environmental, and economic growth, as well as the institutional capacity of public and private actors). Regarding this, we are interested in the municipal institutional capacity (MIC) as a skill to carry out the functions and appropriate tasks that municipalities must fulfill in an effective, efficient, and sustainable way, and it varies considerably, depending on each local context. In order to analyze the relevance of the current official regionalization as a state government strategy for the centralized construction of MIC, an exploratory approach to its spatial behavior in the State of Veracruz, Mexico, was carried out. Given the nature of the study, a purely mixed approach, sequential exploratory design, subnational analysis methodology, and exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) were employed. The variable to be analyzed is the 2016 Municipal Functional Capacities Index (Índice de Capacidades Funcionales Municipales (ICFM)), with the Geostatistics Framework cartographic base of the 2020 Population and Housing Census. The analysis units are 212 municipalities in the 2014–2017 government period. As a result, it was confirmed that the current regionalization was irrelevant, owing to the absence of global spatial autocorrelation, and it was concluded that targeted interventions are necessary according to regional modeling techniques, based on scientific evidence.

Experimental and computational assessment of disbond growth and fatigue life of bonded joints and patch repairs for primary airframe structures

The applicability of a damage slow growth management strategy to bonded joints/patch repairs of primary aircraft structures was evaluated through an experimental and computational study. Fatigue tests were conducted to investigate the entire process of disbond growth from initiation up to joint ultimate failure. The residual static strength of the joint as a function of disbond length was established using finite element modelling, in which the mesh size was calibrated using the static strength of the specimens measured in room temperature and dry (RD) and hot-wet (HW) conditions, based on the characteristic distance approach. A virtual crack close technique (VCCT) approach was utilised to assess the strain energy release rates (SERRs) as a function of disbond crack length. The measured disbond growth rates were correlated with the SERRs using a modified Paris law that enabled prediction of joint fatigue life. The fatigue test results indicated that for a joint having a sufficient static strength safety margin under a typical fatigue loading that would propagate disbond, the disbond growth would be stable in a particular length range. Thus, the slow growth approach would be feasible for a bonded joint/patch repairs if the patch is designed to be sufficiently large to allow extended damage propagation (whilst in the case when patch size must be limited, safe-life design for the patch termination region in critical repairs must be considered. Should disbond growth occur in this case, the joint must be repaired or replaced). The work presented in this paper validated the framework/procedure proposed previously by the authors (Tanulia et al., 2020) for managing damage slow growth in bonded joints/patch repairs. In the last part of this paper the planned follow-on research is briefly described.

친환경적 유역관리를 위한 토지이용 관리방안 - 평택호 사례를 중심으로 -

The purpose of this study is to propose land-use policy strategies for environmental friendly watershed management for Pyeongtaek Lake. Primary research methods are 1) review of plans related to the land uses around Pyeongtaek Lake, 2) review of concepts about environmental friendly land use methods, 3) examination of relevant cases in South Korea and other countries. After the review of existing plans related to Pyeongtaek Lake and surrounding watershed areas, we found the following: 1) application of growth management strategies for the area undesignated from Pyeongtaek Lake tourism sites, 2) consideration and application of developable areas and incentive-related growth management plan, 3) necessity for management of local run-off and non-point pollution sources for water circulation system in the watershed. Based on the observation we derived the following conclusions: 1) we need land use management strategies especially for residential areas based on Low Impact Development, 2) land use strategies based on the combination of urban planning and institutional tools, 3) application of LID is necessary through incentives and requirement. We advise that due to the limited nature of literature review, further studies from quantitative approaches for environmental friendly land use management strategies are necessary in the future.

A nature-based approach to mitigate flood risk and improve ecosystem services in Shiga, Japan

The increased frequency of extreme rain events due to climate change has garnered attention in Japan. In 2018, the country enacted the Act of Climate Change Adaptation to formulate plans at national and local levels. The government has suggested the use of nature-based solutions (NBSs) across the country to address the increased risk of natural disasters. This study employs scenario analysis to examine the effectiveness of NBSs for the mitigation of flood risk and their implications on the provision of ecosystem services (ESs). Shiga prefecture in Japan enacted its own ordinance in 2015. This ordinance considers existing land use and building regulations to mitigate flood risk. The quantitative analysis assumes nine scenarios up to the year 2050, combining the current policy of Shiga and our original assumption of advance policy options to evaluate the future flood risk and ES. The analysis revealed that land use management can partially mitigate the flood risk by banning new residences and relocating residential land from flood-prone areas to safer areas and converting residential land into forest and paddy fields. It also suggests that both flood risk mitigation and provision of ESs can be further improved if local governments introduce a residence growth management strategy.

Taking Implementation Seriously in the Evaluation of Urban Growth Management Strategies: “Safeguarding the Future” of the Antwerp City-Region

Contemporary evaluations of urban growth management (UGM) strategies often take the shape of quantitative measurements of land values and housing prices. In this paper, we argue that it is of key importance that these evaluations also analyse the policy formulation and implementation phases of growth management strategies. It is in these phases that the institutions and discourses are (trans)formed in which UGM strategies are embedded. This will enable us to better understand the conditions for growth management policies’ success or failure. We illustrate this point empirically with the case of demarcating urban areas in the region of Flanders, Belgium. Using the Policy Arrangement Approach, the institutional dynamics and discursive meanings in this growth instrument’s formulation and implementation phase are unravelled. More specifically, we explain how the Flemish strategic spatial planning vision of restraining sprawl was transformed into one of accommodating growth in the demarcation of the Antwerp Metropolitan Area, epitomised by two different meanings of the phrase “safeguarding the future.” In conclusion, we argue that, in Antwerp, the demarcation never solidified into a stable policy arrangement, rendering it largely ineffective. We end by formulating three recommendations to contribute to future attempts at managing urban growth in Flanders.

Urbanization, land use transformation and spatio-environmental impacts: Analyses of trends and implications in major metropolitan regions of Ghana

Urbanization induces spatial and environmental changes. Monitoring and understanding the nature of these changes is crucial to achieving sustainable urban development imperatives. To this end, this paper examines the evolution and spatio-environmental impacts of rapid urbanization in two major metropolitan regions of Ghana—Accra-City Region and the Greater Kumasi Sub-Region. The analysis uses Landsat satellite data and landscape metrics to examine land use transitions and to characterize the emergent landscapes over the last three decades. The results show that built-up land has increased significantly in these metropolitan regions largely at the expense of environmental land cover classes. The expansion process follows a general trend where the historical-core zones were initially sites of rapid land cover conversion to built-up, with settlements in the suburban and peripheral zones expanding in recent years and becoming integrated into the conterminous urban areas of the metropolitan regions. The analysis also uncovered a unique, dynamic and complex process whereby the urban-open-space class, being in a permanent state of flux, mediates transitions between built-up land and vegetation and vice versa. The metric-based land use transformation analysis shows that the landscape of the metropolitan regions has fragmented because of an increased expansion and aggregation of patches of built-up land in the core areas and leapfrog, sprawling expansion in the outlying suburban and peripheral zones. The paper concludes on the need for integrative urban growth management strategies that brings together spatial planning and environmental resource governance to avert the negative consequences on the natural environment of unfettered urban expansion.

A procedure to assess disbond growth and determine fatigue life of bonded joints and patch repairs for primary airframe structures

This paper assesses the suitability of a damage slow growth management strategy to bonded joints or patch repairs of primary aircraft structures. The entire process of a disbond crack growth from initiation to the ultimate failure of a typical double lap metallic joint is investigated. The residual static strength of the joint as function of disbond crack length is established using the finite element method with adhesive element failure criteria and a progressive failure analysis. For a joint having sufficient static strength safety margin under a typical fatigue loading that would propagate disbond crack, a finite element fracture mechanics analysis indicates that the disbond growth would be stable in a significant length range of the disbond crack, initiated from either “disbond tolerant zone” or “safe-life zone”. The analysis further suggests that for local (part width) disbond, due to load redistribution effect the disbond growth rate would be reduced as the disbond propagates. These results suggest the slow growth approach would indeed be feasible. With the above analyses, the framework to implement the slow growth approach, predict allowable fatigue life and determine inspection interval, in accordance with the guidance provided in FAA AC 20-107B [1], is established. Furthermore, this study assesses the effect of rigidity imbalance between inner adherend and outer adherend and shows how varying the adherend thickness could affect the adhesive bond strength and disbond growth rate. This information would be useful in design of validation experiment.

Urban growth boundaries delineation coupling ecological constraints with a growth-driven model for the main urban area of Chongqing, China

As an effective tool for achieving urban “smart growth”, urban growth boundaries (UGBs) have received broad attention and application worldwide. In this study, the main urban area of Chongqing is used as a study area to explore the methods of UGBs delineation in mountainous cities. First, starting from the perspectives of basic farmland protection, ecological security, disaster prevention and safety, and topographic limitation, nine constraint factors were selected to comprehensively delineate a rigid, inviolable UGB. Second, in the context of urban growth demand and construction suitability, 22 human activity and natural condition factors that affect changes in urban land use were selected to construct a Markov-future land use simulation (FLUS) model for predicting land use changes occurring by 2020, thereby delineating an elastic UGB in 2020. The following results were obtained. The future land use simulation results based on the Markov-FLUS model were comparatively favorable, with the mean kappa coefficient reaching 0.8455. To ensure the sustainable development of the main urban area of Chongqing Municipality, the area protected by the rigid UGB should be mainly distributed in the “four mountains and two rivers” conservation area for a longer time, with an area of up to 3654.97 km2, accounting for 66.86% of the total main urban area. In 2020, the area of the elastic UGB for the main urban area of Chongqing is recommended to be 971.44 km2, accounting for 17.78% of the total main urban area. In this way, urban growth management strategies that are mainly based on a rigid UGB and complemented by an elastic UGB can be promoted in the planning and management of mountainous cities.

Using multisource data and the V-I-S model in assessing the urban expansion of Riyadh city, Saudi Arabia

ABSTRACT This paper examines the application of remote sensing, based on the Vegetation-Impervious surface-Soil (V-I-S) model and spatial metrics, in an urban analysis for promoting sustainability and understanding urban growth theory. In order to improve the accuracy of land-cover classification, spectral angle mapping (SAM), spectral mixture analysis (SMA) and band ratioing were applied on satellite images for land-cover classification and comparison of the discrimination efficiency of these techniques. For the SMA, subsets of the Landsat (2, 3, 4, 5, and 7) and ASTER (1, 2, and 3N) images were selected. After endmember extraction and purification, the Bayesian probability of each component was computed and used for spectral unmixing. The classified images of different years were compared to analyze the changes in land-use and spatial pattern using V-I-S, a form of percentage of landscape (PLAND) and annualized urban sprawl index (AUSI). The result indicates that the performance of band ratioing (69% accuracy) is not asgood as that of SAM (75%) and SMA (86%) in discriminating between vegetationand agricultural land. It is concluded from the land-use analysis that the growth dynamics substantiate the urban theory of diffusion and coalescence and urban growth management strategies have not been completely successful.

Assessing growth management strategy: A case study of the largest rural-urban region in India

Considerable progress has been made in theoretically understanding the process of sprawl and devising corresponding growth management strategies in the global North. However, urban growth as sprawl remains a serious challenge in the global South, cutting across various geographic and municipal boundaries. The undesirable consequences are excessive expansion as well as inadequate infrastructure and service provision. At the core of steering this development are growth management strategies aiming to secure economically, socially and environmentally sustainable growth.This paper evaluates the performance of the growth management strategy in the National Capital Region of India based on a conceptual framework covering programme design, institutional setting and market interactions. It uses a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods to evaluate policy performance across multiple scales (city, metropolitan, state and region).The research found the limited success of policies, the failure to combine policy with regulatory and non-regulatory instruments, and insufficiencies in the institutional environment, all of which hinder effective growth management. To curtail sprawl, this paper recommends moving towards flexible growth boundaries, introducing self-contained communities as policy component, integrating and enforcing land-use and transport planning, empowering lower-tier authorities and adopting regulatory and non-regulatory instruments for plan implementation.

A Commentary on Sustainably Built Environments and Urban Growth Management

The concept of urban growth management first emerged in the United States in the 1950s. Its goal was to solve problems stemming from urban sprawl by applying integrated planning, management, and regulation, and to adjust to different development trends in different spaces and times. From the viewpoint of the studies on the link between sustainably built environments, urban growth management, and their interactions, this special issue includes theoretical and empirical studies on sustainable built environment planning and design, sustainable growth management strategies, and other related emerging topics, such as intelligent use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to sustainably build environments, as well as smart cities research with big data, data mining, cloud computing, and internet of things (IOT) ideas.

Integrated Framework of Growth Management for Identification of Service Innovation Levels and Priorities

Growth management depends on an accurate understanding of an organizations’ current situation within the market in which it operates. Literature indicates that there is still inefficiency in quantitatively diagnosing the driving factors of service innovation and growth management. The purpose of this research is to identify the levels and priorities of sustainable growth management strategies with detailed measurements for industrial service innovation. The research focuses on the construction industry as the case context to scrutinize and compare various indexes and policy platforms for the evaluation of service innovation and the development of a diagnostic framework. The paper further identified the developmental obstacles of service innovation from 585 survey responses from construction enterprise representatives from Shanghai, Beijing and Xi’an in China, using average score method and entropy weight method. The data analysis identified the service innovation level and development priorities for the enterprises can assist in determining sustainable service innovation paths. The research then combined the competitive advantage characteristics method using a cluster analysis to develop a growth management framework of service innovation in the construction industry. The research results indicated that the majority of analyzed enterprises were in the second phase of their development, with clear policy opportunities for increasing levels of service innovation. However, the results also indicate the majority of sample enterprises were not encouraging the efforts of employees to strive for innovation and were lacking appropriate investment funding towards service-related innovation. These two weaker aspects offer a starting point for firm-level managers to consider when aiming to improving service innovation. The paper contributes by advancing the quantitative evaluation of growth management policies for service innovation. Furthermore, it provides possible measures for improving service innovation with particular emphasis on service innovation in project-based construction enterprises. Finally, it offers a practical diagnostic tool to improve industry level growth via increased service innovation.
