Recently, we developed a new computerized system in morphometry, that consists of a high resolution graphic tablet (Tektronix 4953) directly connected to a PDP 11/45 computer (fig. 1). By tracing a specified contour with a graphic pen the corresponding coordinates on the graphic tablet are stored for further procession in the computer. The density of mesh-points on the graphic tablet is sufficiently high (0.25 mm grid width) to integrate directly a structure area or a borderlength. In contrast to conventional point-counting methods the grid width must not be adapted to the size of the structure. Additionally, the complete definition of a structure by the coordinates of its contour facilitates the evaluation of parameters such as diameters, distances or the centre of gravity.
