Trends in Green Supply Chain Management: Insights from Bibliometric Analysis (2014-2023)

This research discusses the publication trend on the topic of green supply chain management with "Green Supply Chain Management" as the keyword. Search using the title and abstract categories listed in Dimension from 2014 to 2023 analyzed in a bibliometric study. This bibliometric study can guide academics and practitioners to take relevant steps in managing environmentally friendly supply chains. Therefore, this research could contribute to understanding developments and challenges in the green supply chain field. The results of this study are expected to provide insights for decision-makers and practitioners in managing supply chain sustainably. There are 4,017 articles. This number is very impressive and almost every year there is a significant development in this research topic. The analysis of this study is focused on the number of publications, authors, and journals. This study aims to observe the development map of Green Supply Chain Management research in the world. Results show that the number of publications on Green Supply Chain Management has increased quite steadily and was the most published in 2023 with a total of 803 journals. As for the lowest number of publications, there was in 2014 with the number of publications as many as 179. Thus, it can be concluded that the topic of this theme has developed from year to year, and this concept has great potential to develop further in the future.

A bibliometric analysis of the genesis, journey and current status of green supply chain management in the digital economy

Purpose This paper aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of studies focusing on green supply chain management (GSCM) within the context of the digital economy.Design/methodology/approach We utilize the Web of Science database to search and filter relevant documents spanning the years 2003–2022. This extensive dataset enables us to analyze the growth and cutting-edge developments in research pertaining to GSCM in the digital economy.Findings The paper finds a significant increase in research interest and output, particularly noticeable from 2016 onwards, indicating the growing relevance of integrating GSCM with digital technologies. It is found that the prominent contribution of countries like China, England and the USA, underscoring a strong geographical diversity in research outputs. China leads in the number of publications, which reflects its significant role in shaping the discourse around GSCM in the digital economy. However, when it comes to citations, the USA leads, suggesting a higher impact or quality of research emanating from this region. Collaborative dynamics outlined in the study demonstrate extensive international cooperation, primarily among leading research countries, which is facilitated by shared digital platforms enhancing the research’s reach and impact. The study also highlights a range of emerging themes such as the adoption of blockchain technology, Internet of Things (IoT) and the circular economy within GSCM, indicating dynamic areas for future research.Practical implications The findings of this study hold significant practical implications for researchers, practitioners and policymakers. They shed light on the current state of research in GSCM within the digital economy, highlighting areas where further investigation is needed and pointing to the emerging trends in this field. Understanding the distribution of research and influential authors can guide future collaborative efforts and inform decision-making processes in the pursuit of sustainable supply chain practices in the digital era.Originality/value This paper contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the evolving landscape of GSCM in the digital economy. It offers valuable insights into the growth patterns, key contributors and geographical distribution of research in this domain. This information is crucial for researchers and stakeholders seeking to stay at the forefront of sustainable supply chain practices in an increasingly digital world.

Green supplier development and sustainable supply chain management

AbstractThe rapid rise in demand for sustainably produced goods over the last decade has made integrating environmental sustainability practices into the supply chain a strategic capability for many businesses. Despite the rapid growth of green supply chain management research, scholars have not fully examined supplier development in the context of the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between green supplier development strategies and supplier adoption of natural resource‐based view (NRBV) strategies, as well as their impact on green supply chain management (GSCM) practices. We make a significant contribution in this field by integrating a natural‐resource‐based view and a dynamic capabilities perspective to investigate how firms in developing economies overcome the environmental sustainability capability deficiencies of small and medium‐sized enterprises and are able to develop and implement environmentally sustainable practices. Based on a survey of 167 manufacturing companies in Kenya, the findings reveal that focal firms' indirect environmental sustainability supplier development strategies significantly impact environmental sustainability practices among suppliers and that the focal firm‐supplier dyadic relational capabilities significantly affected suppliers' implementation of environmental sustainability practices. Furthermore, focal firms' resource investment (financial and capital) in environmentally sustainable supply chain management programs to develop suppliers has a significant impact on suppliers' implementation of environmental sustainability practices.

Systemic review of the literature of green supply chain management in the food packaging industry

The awareness of green supply chain management (GSCM) has grown in the past year, particularly in the food packaging industry, due to population growth and its environmental impact. To explore this, we studied global perspectives on and contributions to GSCM, aiming to apply insights to developing countries. Our research revealed three main barriers hindering GSCM adoption in emerging economies: limited knowledge,inadequate technology, and high costs. By examining several authors’ viewpoints, we created a timeline showcasing GSCM’s evolution, enabling targeted improvements within the food packaging industry. Through this analysis, our paper not only reaffirms its initial objectives but also provides a foundation of tools and information for future GSCM research. This work contributes to the understanding of GSCM’s benefits and challenges, facilitating sustainable practices in a vital industry.

Green Supply Chain Management Research Trends and Linkages to UN Sustainable Development Goals

Growing awareness about environmental responsibility among businesses and policymakers has increased interest in Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM). For the first time, using the SDG mapping algorithms, this article focused on 7009 publications from 2013 to 2022 mapped explicitly to 17 SDGs. This study uses bibliometric and science mapping techniques to create a detailed mapping between GSCM research and SDGs. This study created an SDG citation network to show how specific SDGs are related to GSCM practices. The most mapped SDGs in this study are SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals). Our results showed that GSCM research mainly focuses on three thematic areas: industry 4.0 and sustainable supply chains, GSCM practice coordination, and sustainable environmental policy management. This also includes integrating the circular economy into GSCM, sustainable sourcing, supply chain resilience, digital transformation in GSCM for better environmental performance, and the social impact of GSCM. A shift towards integrating sustainability into supply chain processes has been found. Environmental management, performance monitoring, and new technologies like Industry 4.0 and AI have been used to support the SDGs. International interest and collaboration in GSCM research can be seen from the bibliographic coupling study covering countries like Europe, Western Countries, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe. This study shows how GSCM can directly address global challenges identified by the United Nations by mapping GSCM research to specific SDGs.

Factors influencing the implementation of green supply chain management: The case of Pakistan SMEs

The implementation of green supply chain management (GSCM) in developing countries is represented by less advanced economic growth than in industrialized countries. It is reasonable to presume that different nations may have different constructs influencing GSCM adoption. Even though, there is a gap in the literature regarding the execution of GSCM in developing nations like Pakistan. This demonstrates the necessity and importance of undertaking empirical research on the variables influencing GSCM adoption from the perspective of Pakistan small and medium enterprises (SMEs). To close the gap in GSCM research, this study tries to pinpoint the variables influencing GSCM adoption among Pakistan SMEs. SPSS software version 23 is used to apply statistical techniques to the primarily obtained data. The survey form was administrated to 600 target respondents from all administrative levels. There were 210 complete and usable survey forms, showing a response rate of around 35%. First, the reliability of all questions is checked; second, we use multiple regression analysis to identify which factors are affecting the implementation of green supply chain management in Pakistani SMEs. The findings suggest that environmental factors and organizational factors have a great influence on managers’ intention to adopt GSCM. Meanwhile, technological factors have no significant impact on managers’ intentions to adopt GSCM.

Analyzing and evaluating supplier carbon footprints in supply networks

Green purchasing in green supply chain management (GSCM) literature plays an essential role in achieving carbon neutrality by seeking to eliminate CO2 emissions. Single organizations would, however, not aim at such a goal if it is to their economic detriment. GSCM research streams highlight that the successful implementation of environmental considerations leads to better economic performance in the long term. Therefore, this paper aims to identify and analyze suppliers that exhibit both environmental and economic success, indicating an effective and efficient realization of their sustainability measures. Given the long-term horizon of the research problem, we differentiate from previous microeconomic research by taking a macro perspective on sustainable supplier analysis, which investigates macroeconomic indicators focusing on firms' revenues. The above-described economic and environmental efficiency is analyzed in a multiple case study using sustainability reports from 66 OEM suppliers as well as data on their revenues and ratings on their carbon pollution measured by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). First, a text mining inspired quantitative sustainable SWOT analysis is performed to evaluate the long-term strategy of organizations. A subsequent data envelopment analysis aims to identify efficient suppliers and causes for their efficiency. The overall results not only outline sustainable suppliers but also give insights into suppliers that may become sustainable in the future. We further show that large organizations struggle with meeting environmental expectations, whereas low-to-medium-sized suppliers tend to be more economically and environmentally efficient.. Based on the results, we discuss implications both for management research and practice.

Green supply chain management/green finance: a bibliometric analysis of the last twenty years by using the Scopus database.

Mostly, the product manufacturer and activities related to transportation have a greater influence on the supply chain and the environment. Hence, the green investment in water, biodiversity protection, waste treatment, resources, and climate change alleviation help in enhancing industrial production. Thus, for the enhancement of green growth, the industries must adopt green financing by making investments in ecology, climate change, and carbon reduction. Despite having the greatest growth in green supply chain management, still, the implementations of greening the product and processes have not been seen properly in many industries. A bibliometric analysis was conducted through VOS viewer version 1.6.7. of last twenty years (2001–2021). A total of 2385 articles were retrieved from the Scopus database. The results revealed that China, India, Iran, and Taiwan have a vast collection of articles and have very strong international collaborations. The most cited authors were Sarkis, J., Zhu, Q., and Khan, S.A.R. The results also suggest that green supply chain management research was related to the field of engineering, environmental science, energy sciences, social sciences, and business management. Some new areas are discovered like green innovation, green information technology, green productivity, corporate environmental responsibility, green investments, green credit, and green credit policy. As evidenced from our bibliographic database search, it is observed that integrated work on green supply chain management and green finance is limited, and this makes this research work to be novel. Green supply chain management: Pressures, practices, and performance—An integrative literature review

AbstractThe evolution of supply chain management, such as green supply chain and sustainable supply chain implementation in the industry, has been a great momentum over the past two decades, particularly from the mid of third industrial revolution to the current fourth industrial revolution. Given this interest, engineering and management scholars have examined various concepts and theoretical developments of green supply chain management (GSCM), especially during the past decade. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to critically review the extant literature on pressures, practices, and performance of GSCM. The paper surveyed more than 150 research articles published in high‐impact refereed academic journals. The review synthesis has been discussed through GSCM pressures (government rules and regulations, corporate social responsibility, investment recovery, and green market), GSCM practices (eco‐design, internal environmental management, waste management, green purchasing aspect, quality, and product recovery), and GSCM performance (financial, operational, and environmental). Bibliometric results were presented, including the types of sources, year‐wise publications, country‐wise output, journal‐wise output, and top contributors in GSCM research.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Green Supply Chain Management Based on the Web of Science (WOS) Platform

To analyse the research progress and frontier dynamics of green supply chain management, this paper uses Web of Science’s citation database to search and filter related documents from 2007–2018. A total of 1391 articles were obtained. On this basis, a bibliometric analysis method was utilized to study the literature characteristics and research hotspots of green supply chain management research. Our results show the following: (1) The current amount of published literature on the field of green supply chain management is exponentially increasing. Research on green supply chain management tended to develop after 2013. (2) The current research on green supply chain management has not formed a core author group and among the literatures on green supply chain management, only a few authors reported some influential literatures. (3) It can be seen from the comprehensive average citation frequency and the number of publications that Hong Kong Polytechnic University, University of Southern Denmark and others have a strong research capability and a large field influence in the field of green supply chain management research. (4) There are 13 core journals publishing the research of green supply chain management, covering 10 fields including engineering, mathematics and social issues. (5) At present, the research hotspots of green supply chain management mainly include the following: Green production and innovation, green supply chain management theory and method, and sustainable supply chain environment and performance. Finally, this paper analyses the shortcomings of previous research and proposes a future direction for research development.

Firms’ Sustainable Practice Research in Developing Countries: Mapping the Cited Literature by Bibliometric Analysis Approach

This paper reports a review on firms sustainable practice (SP) using Bibliometric analysis approach. The objectives of this review are to discuss on the key research focus of SP literature in developing countries based on highly cited (authors, countries, articles and journals) and to determine the emerging areas of interests. The data is extracted from Scopus indexed database yielding 1,564 documents of which only 414 (26%) cited literatures were from developing countries. The analysis shows that Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) is the main category of research that appears consistently and frequently. The highest contributing countries is China (163 articles), India (93 articles) and Malaysia (40 articles). The highest cited author is Srivastava S.K. from India. The most influential researchers are Sarkis J. (31 publications) and Zhu Q. (22 publications). The most frequent avenue for publication for GSCM research is the Journal of Cleaner Production.

An examination on the influence of small and medium enterprise (SME) stakeholder on green supply chain management practices

In this paper, climate change and global warming are the biggest current issues in the industrial sectors. The green supply chain managements (GSCM) is one of the crucial input to these issues. Effective GSCM can potentially secure the organization’s competitive advantage and improve the environmental performance of the network activities. In this study, the aim is to investigate and examine how a small and medium enterprises (SMEs) stakeholder pressure and top management influence green supply chain management practices. The study is further advance green supply chain management research in Malaysia focusing on SMEs manufacturing sector using structural equation modelling. Structural equation modelling is a multivariate statistical analysis technique used to examine structural relationship. It is the combination of factor analysis and multi regression analysis and used to analyse structural relationship between measure variable and latent factor. This research found that top management support and stakeholder pressure is the major influence for SMEs to adopt green supply chain management. The research also found that top management is fully mediate with the relationship between stakeholder pressure and monitoring supplier environmental performance.

Environmental Management Competitive Pressure Effect on SME Environmental Innovation Activities: A Green Supply Chain Perspective

The idea of assimilating green supply chain is to integrate and establish environmental management into the supply chain practices. The study aims to explore how environmental management competitive pressure influences a SME company in Malaysia to incorporate green supply chain integration, which is an efficient platform to develop environmental innovation. This study further advances green supply chain management research in Malaysia by using the method of quantitative analysis to analyze the model developed which data will be collected based on a sample of SMEs in Malaysia in manufacturing sector. The model developed in this study illustrates how environmental management competitive pressure from main competitors affects three fundamental dimensions of green supply chain integration. The research findings suggest that environmental management competitive pressure is a vital driving force for a SME company to incorporate internal and external collaboration in developing green product innovation. From the analysis conducted, the study strongly demonstrated that the best way for a company to counteract competitor’s environmental management success is to first implement strong internal green product development process then move to incorporate external environmental management innovation between their suppliers and customers. The findings also show that internal integration of green product innovation fully mediates the relationship of environmental management competitive pressure and the external integration of green product innovation.

AN ERA OF CHANGING THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION BY GREEN SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Green supply chain management is defined as the process of using environmentally friendly inputs and transforming these inputs into outputs that can be reclaimed and re-used at the end of their life cycle thus, creating a sustainable supply chain. GSCM is one of the recent innovations for the enhancement of capabilities of Supply Chain Management. The purpose of this paper is to carry out a theoretical review of Green supply chain management (GSCM). The assessment involved 144 research articles published in 48 selected journals between 1998 and 2013. The methodology of empirical research involved selection and classification of 144 research articles in GSCM. A systematic classification and a critical analysis is carried out so as to identify research gaps in content of GSCM, as well as to recommend directions for future research. It is concluded from the analysis of the results that research in GSCM is increasing at a faster rate than ever; with theory building more in focus than verification. Furthermore, a new taxonomy was proposed on the basis of content and research methodology utilised. Based on this taxonomy, significant trends were observed and some unique inferences were drawn, apart from identifying the directions for future research. There have been a couple of literature reviews in GSCM but none of them focused exclusively on research methodology in GSCM. Also the sample size with respect to the number of papers (144 papers), as well as number of journals (48 journals), is larger than ever considered for literature review in GSCM. The papers spans a longer time period of 16 years (1998-2013).

The Supply Chain Position Paradox: Green Practices and Firm Performance

Engagement in corporate environmentalism has become increasingly important across all tiers of the supply chain, from upstream raw material suppliers to downstream retailers. However, the contextual role of a firm's supply chain position (SCP) on the adoption of green supply chain management (GSCM) practices and their performance implications has not been empirically explored. We derive a conceptual model combining the contingent natural resource‐based view (NRBV) with stakeholder theory. The resulting hypotheses are tested using cross‐industry data of 284 firms utilizing primary and secondary data. Findings reveal a phenomenon we term theSupply Chain Position Paradox: The closer a company is located toward the end consumer, the higher itsGSCMpractice levels. Conversely, performance gains decrease with company proximity to the end consumer. This paradox is grounded in a mismatch between the level of five specificGSCMpractice categories and their respective performance implications. The introduction ofSCPas an overlooked contextual factor adds new insights into the “GSCMpractice–performance link” and extends currentGSCMresearch. Moreover, our results yield insights to supply chain management executives in optimizing theirGSCMpractice portfolios.

Role of green policy on sustainable supply chain management

Purpose– Green supply chain management (GSCM) has become the driver of sustainable strategy. This topic has been gaining increasing attention within both academia and industry for making the industry competitive. With the ever increasing demand for reducing carbon foot prints and greenhouse gas emission, there is a need to study the various parameters and drivers of sustainable development, especially in supply chain management. The need for developing the sustainable model including the drivers of sustainability needs to be designed. The paper aims to discuss these issues.Design/methodology/approach– Using resource-based theory and value chain analysis; the authors have developed a model for sustainable strategy. The data were collected and analyzed to find the key drivers of sustainability. The data were analyzed with the help of regression and correlation analysis.Findings– After providing a background discussion on GSCM, the authors categorize and review recent GSCM literature under three broad categories, with a special emphasis on investigation of adoption, diffusion, and outcomes of GSCM practices. Within this review framework, the authors also identified GSCM research questions that are worthy of investigation. The study suggests that the main drivers of GSCM include the environmental policy and the green human resource management by providing them training for adopting sustainability practices. Besides this, another key driver is the sustainability criteria in supplier selection which was found to be enhancing the outcomes of sustainability.Research limitations/implications– The model suggests that we need to have management support for implementing the sustainability strategy in the organization.Practical implications– The study guides the managers for implementing sustainable supply chain management practices in the organization.Social implications– The model including the environment policy (adoption), green human resource management (diffusion), green technology (diffusion), and GSCM.Originality/value– Additional organizational theories which are considered valuable for future GSCM research are also identified with a conclusion for this review.

Green supply chain management: review and framework development

The aim of this study is to explore published literature in green supply chain management (GSCM) domain for the purpose of updating the knowledge of the field and to carry out an analysis of the existing literature. The methodology employed for this research involved collection and classification of 261 research articles in the field of GSCM. A systematic classification followed by critical analysis leads to research gaps in the context of GSCM which paves direction for future research. A framework is developed which helps to understand the implementation of environmental conscious measures into supply chain management. Literature analysis shows that research in GSCM is evolving at a rapid pace. A couple of literature reviews already exist but this paper attempts to extend the review ambit. A conceptual framework is proposed for revamping a traditional supply chain in to an environmental conscious green supply chain. The barriers and enablers acting upon this transformation are also discussed.

Green supply chain management (GSCM): a structured literature review and research implications

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the status of green supply chain management (GSCM) research in terms of how the field is represented along a number of dimensions including journal, year, country, university, publishing house, authors, research design, research methods, data analysis techniques, multi criteria decision-making methods, research topics/issues and major industries actively involved. Design/methodology/approach – A range of online databases from 1998 to August 2013 were searched containing the word “green supply chain” in their title and in the phrases to provide a comprehensive listing of journal articles on GSCM. Based on this a total of 177 articles were found and the information on a series of variables was gathered. Each of these articles was further reviewed and classified. The review and classification process was independently verified. All papers were allocated to the main and sub-categories based on the major focus. Findings – The major findings shows that survey research holds greater credibility and the trend in survey research is moving from exploratory to model building and testing. GSCM research related to organizational practices, environmental issues, process, performance and sustainability were found to be most widely published topics within the GSCM domain. Research limitations/implications – This paper is limited in reviewing those articles which contains the word “green supply chain” in the title and the phrases of the articles. Originality/value – The present review will provide increased understanding of the current state of research and what still needs to be investigated in the GSCM discipline.

The influence of green supply chain integration and environmental uncertainty on green innovation in Taiwan's IT industry

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between green supply chain integration (GSCI) and green innovation and to analyze the moderating effects of environmental uncertainty.Design/methodology/approachA multi‐dimensional approach was employed to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework which encompasses various aspects of GSCI, green innovation and environmental uncertainty. To identify the effects of GSCI and environmental uncertainty on green innovation, hierarchical moderated regression analysis was applied using questionnaire data from 211 Taiwanese, information technology (IT) manufacturers.FindingsSupplier, customer and internal integration enhance both green product and process innovations. Demand uncertainty positively moderates each GSCI‐green innovation link. However, the moderating effect of technological uncertainty is insignificant.Research limitations/implicationsThis study conducted a cross‐sectional investigation of the Taiwanese IT industry. Therefore, it lacks the advantages of a longitudinal case study and its findings cannot be generalized to other industries.Practical implicationsThis study argues that, to improve green innovation performance, managers should endeavor to integrate resources and capabilities within their organizations, suppliers and customers. It also suggests that managers should constantly follow demand trends in the market and maintain tight technological networks among supply chain partners.Originality/valueThis study provides new insights into green supply chain management (GSCM) knowledge: theoretically creating GSCI‐green innovation links with the natural‐resource‐based view, and empirically demonstrating that effective green innovation requires multi‐dimensional GSCI. Furthermore, it develops a valid and reliable scale of environmental uncertainty for future research in GSCM, and presents the characteristics of implementing GSCI in Taiwan's IT industry.

O desenvolvimento e a estruturação do conceito de Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) ainda não parecem estar consolidados na literatura. Igualmente, as práticas de aplicação dos conceitos da GSCM necessitam de mais investigação para que possam ser mais bem entendidas e aplicadas. O principal objetivo desse artigo é apresentar um quadro de trabalho que possa organizar e orientar a futura pesquisa em GSCM. A partir de pesquisa bibliográfica, foi possível identificar um conjunto de práticas que parecem estar maduras e analisar como alguns autores têm organizado o tema. Foram examinados estudos genéricos, que pretenderam representar a seu tempo o estado-da-arte da pesquisa, e estudos localizados, referentes a indústrias específicas ou regiões geográficas. Chegou-se a um quadro de trabalho estruturado em três grandes campos de pesquisa: estratégia, inovação, e operações. Os campos, por sua vez, se estruturaram em quatro, três e cinco áreas, respectivamente. Estratégia foi estruturada em: formulação, avaliação de desempenho, comunicação e colaboração, e barreiras e estímulos. Inovação foi estruturada em: processo, produto, e mercado. Operações foram estruturadas em: compras verdes, manufatura verde, distribuição verde, logística reversa, e gerenciamento de resíduos. Algumas pesquisas foram mencionadas como exemplos de temas pertencentes ao quadro de trabalho.
