The occurrence of latania scale,Hemiberlesia lataniae(Signoret) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae), in New Zealand

Abstract Latania scale, (Hemiberlesia lataniae (Signoret)), is now established in the North Island of New Zealand. The significance of this pest and methods of distinguishing latania scale from greedy scale (Hemiberlesia rapax (Comstock)) and oleander scale (Aspidiotus nerii Bouche) are discussed.

Differential toxicological responses of greedy scale stages to diazinon

Invasion of greedy scale crawlers (Hemiberlesia rapax) onto kiwifruit from taraire trees

Taraire (Beilschmiedia tarairi) trees arc commonly found in association with kiwifruit orchards on the free draining volcanic soils in Northland. Greedy scale Hemiberlesia rapax (Comstock) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) were monitored from taraire leaves in 1985-86. A small stand (100x250 m) of taraire adjacent to a kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) orchard was estimated to contain 1-4 million mature scale. Greedy scale crawler activity on the taraire was assessed using sticky tape traps. Aerial dispersal of crawlers was monitored in the kiwifruit orchard adjacent to the taraire using sticky glass traps. Potted kiwifruit trap plants, which had been kept free of scale, were placed in the orchard to measure crawler dispersal and settlement. Two main periods of crawler release, aerial dispersal and settlement occurred in November-January and March-May. These results show that greedy scale can invade kiwifruit orchards in high numbers from adjacent host plants such as taraire.

Abstract Experimental sprayings of kiwifruit vines with azinphos-methyl, diazinon, and omethoate were carried out in 1973 and with azinphos-methyl in 1974. Repeated azinphos-methyl applications gave virtually scale-free leaves and fruit at harvest. Residues of azinphos-methyl and omethoate were unusually high immediately after spraying (up to 18 mg/kg and 11 mg/kg respectively) and residues from some treatments remained above the relevant New Zealand maximum residue limits (MRL) (2 and 0.5 mg/kg) for in excess of 5 weeks. Diazinon residues were lower and decayed to below the New Zealand MRL within 10 days. The surface hair on the fruit contributed significantly to the high azinphos-methyl residues.

Scale insect survey on apples 1959–60

Summary Seven scale insects are recorded from apples in New Zealand, five of them causing red marks on fruit. They are San José scale (Quadraspidiotus perniciosus (Comst.)), oyster shell scale (Q. ostreaeformis (Curtis)), mussel scale (Lepidosaphes ulmi (L.)), red scale (Aonidiella aurantii (Mask.)), Parlatoria pittospori Mask., P. virescens Mask. of McKenzie, and greedy scale (Aspidiotus rap ax (Comst.)). Oyster-shell scale is recorded from New Zealand for the first time. Red scale is recorded here for the first time causing red marks on apples. P. virescens is recorded for the first time on fruit. San Jose is the most important economically of these scales because it is most widespread and produces three generations each season.
