Poetic Disillusionment and Immortal Struggles: A Comparative Study of Lin Daiyu and Jane Eyre

Abstract: Lin Daiyu and Jane Eyre are both well-known characters in world literature. Though they are created by writers from different cultures in different times, many studies have found that they have many similarities and worth comparing. However, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding in Lin Daiyu and Jane Eyre's similarities and differences as well as the factors that influence them. Aiming to compare Lin Daiyu and Jane Eyre experiences and characteristics roundly, this essay not only summarizes previous studies, but also divides into three aspects to compare Lin Daiyu and Jare Eyre, which are personalities, love experiences and growth environment. It is found that Lin Daiyu and Jane Eyre both respect themselves as well as others, with strong self-esteem and the value of equality. At the same time, they both show their courage to resist unreasonable things in society. They both pursue pure love without material desires, while Lin Daiyu regards love as more important than Jane Eyre. Jane Eyre's harsh growth environment with simple relationships gives her tenacity, while Lin Daiyu's seemingly enjoyable growth environment with complicated relationships makes her more sensitive. The different experiences and values of the writers also have a significant influence on the characters they create. Comparing two famous characters from different cultures allows us to learn more about the themes of great literature works and witness the image of a group of people from different historical background.

Positive Deviance in Nutritional Practices for Two-Year-Olds in Poor Fisherman Families in the Belawan Health Center Area, 2022

The problem of malnutrition is still the main problem faced in human resource development. The problem of growth and development of Baduta is a serious problem because at this age the process of physical and intellectual growth and development is critical. Malnutrition problems mostly occur in poor families but are not caused by poor families who have well-nourished children. The Belawan Community Health Center working area is one of the community health centers with the highest number of cases of malnutrition in Medan City. To overcome this, a program is needed that is believed to be effective and sustainable. One of the existing programs to overcome the problem of malnutrition and malnutrition is positive deviation. This research aims to identify positive behavior in feeding (type of food, processing of food ingredients, mealtimes and method of feeding) of toddlers who are well-nourished in poor fishing families in the Belawan Community Health Center Working Area in 2022. This research method is qualitative research with a narrative approach. Researchers studied individual lives by asking one or several individuals to tell stories about their lives related to positive behavior in feeding well-nourished animals. This information is then retold by the researcher in a narrative chronology. The findings of this research indicate that addressing nutritional challenges in children can be effectively achieved by leveraging the potential and resources within the community. This is done through the identification of positive deviant behaviors, particularly those related to beneficial feeding practices. These practices encompass aspects such as the types of food provided, the methods of food preparation, the timing of meals, and the approach to food administration. Keep up the great work! Comparing the success and failure of the Murray–Darling Basin Plan's water recovery programs

AbstractThe Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) Plan is held up by some as an exemplar for world‐leading water policy, whilst others have called it a failure. Total proposed recovery was to return 3200 GL of consumptive (e.g. namely irrigation) water use to non‐consumptive (e.g. environmental) use in the MDB, making it one of the largest planned reallocations of water resources in the world. As of June 2023, over AUD$13 billion was committed financially from the Australian government to Basin water reform, with AUD$7.7 billion spent to date on water recovery programs. The implementation of the Plan has been mired in controversy, and it missed its first water recovery targets that had been set for 2024, requiring substantial legislation amendments. This study provides a qualitative policy overview comparison of the success and failure of the two main water recovery programs implemented—buyback of water entitlements from willing sellers and subsidising irrigation infrastructure (on and off‐farm) projects. It concludes that contrary to the popular view held by many, the buyback water recovery program has been a success—achieving the majority of the water recovered to date, at the least cost, with the least negative externalities—in comparison to infrastructure programs.Points for practitioners Assessing success and failure of MDB water recovery programs requires establishing effectiveness, efficiency and equity criteria. Greater work on the benefits of water reallocation downstream and cultural water is needed. A comparison of MDB buyback water recovery programs with irrigation infrastructure programs found higher net benefits for buyback programs. Use first‐best policy to address each water policy objective, not one policy aimed at addressing multi‐objectives. Overall, the Plan.s overall success is still to be determined, given the difficulty in judging environmental outcome success that is intrinsically linked with other external factors.

A Brief Literature Review of the Genre in Pride and Prejudice

Transformational Leadership Practices and Work Engagement among School Heads: An Explanatory-Sequential Mixed Method Inquiry

This study examined the transformational leadership and work engagement of 169 public school heads. It also sought an in-depth explanation of their transformational leadership and work engagement experiences. The sample was stratified, and the multifactor leadership questionnaire and Utrecht work engagement scale were used. Semi-structured interviews collected the qualitative data. In selecting 10 participants, maximum variation was employed. Generally, the school heads’ transformational leadership was great, and administrative experience correlated with it. Meanwhile, they had a very great work engagement. Their transformational leadership was associated with their work engagement. The qualitative phase generated four themes: values at the heart of a transformational leader; experience at the heart of shaping transformational leadership knowledge and skills; passion at the heart of a transformational leader; and organizational change and accomplishments mirror the influence of school heads’ transformational leadership to work engagement. As a result, they transformed their organizations and achieved success. Their leadership style stimulated motivation, consideration, idealized influence, and intellectual stimulation among teachers. They have found fulfillment through work. Therefore, transformational leadership and work engagement are vital to a successful organization.

Losing Top Talent: How Organizations Can Alienate Their Most Valuable Employees

Retaining top talent is crucial for organizational success but many firms unknowingly drive away their best employees. This article examines the major reasons outstanding performers seek opportunities elsewhere when their needs are overlooked. Through a review of relevant literature and analyses of industry examples, key factors are identified that alienate top contributors, such as focusing solely on tasks while neglecting human well-being, lacking career growth pathways, not acknowledging great work, and poor communication practices. Practical strategies are then presented for cultivating an environment where top performers want to stay long-term, such as building relationships, balancing work and life, providing learning opportunities, regularly expressing appreciation, fostering transparency, and empowering skilled individuals. The consulting industry example highlights retention challenges overcome by firms attending to human needs like mentorship and flexibility. Overall, leadership must recognize talent retention as dependent on fulfilling innate human needs within the workplace.

The Influence of the Rolling Direction on the Mechanical Properties of the Al-Alloy EN AW-5454-D

A complementary characterisation of the Al-alloy EN AW-5454 was carried out, intended for obtaining the laser hybrid welding parameters of subassemblies in the automotive industry. The investigation included a microstructural examination and the determination of the alloy’s properties using several analytical methods (HV5 hardness measurement, tensile test, Charpy impact toughness, fracture mechanics analysis). Samples were prepared in the longitudinal and transverse directions of a cold-rolled sheet of EN AW-5454 with thicknesses of 3.5 mm and 4 mm. The measured hardness on the thinner sheet was 5% higher than on the thicker sheet. The tensile and yield strength were nominal, while the elongations were smaller by 2.2–3.2% for the longitudinal samples and by 2.7–13.7% for the transverse samples. The smaller deviations from the nominal values are for the thinner sheet metal. A precise topographical analysis showed the brittle fractures of the samples. The Charpy impact toughness results on the thicker plate showed a 20% greater work needed to break it in the longitudinal direction than in the transverse direction. With the thinner sheet metal, 40% greater work was needed. SEM (scanning electron microscope) analysis has shown that the intermetallic Al6(Mn,Fe) particles in the longitudinal samples were mostly intact, with evidence of tough areas on the upper part of the fracture, indicating a better toughness than the specimens in the transverse direction. More crushed intermetallic particles were observed at the fractures of the transverse samples, and their distribution appeared to be more oriented in the direction of rolling. Fracture mechanics SENB (single edge notch bending) tests and their analysis showed that the resistance of the material to crack propagation in the longitudinal sample was about 50% greater than that in the transverse sample. SEM analysis of the fractures showed that the state of the intermetallic particles in the fracture mechanics testing and the fracture mechanism differed from the one in the Charpy fractures.

This article examines the cultural and literary ties between the two Turkic peoples – the Karakalpak and Tatar languages. The translation of the work from one language to another is analyzed. The role and contribution of translations of scientists and poets is noted. The famous Karakalpak national poet I. Yusupov translated the poems of the Tatar poet G. Tukai from Tatar into Karakalpak. The article notes the great work of I. Yusupov on the translation and preparation of a collection of poems by G. Tukai and other poets of the Tatar people. At the same time, Professor of Kazan Federal University H. Minnegulov, in his articles about I. Yusupov and other Karakalpak scientists, notes their merits in spreading the work of G. Tukai among other Turkic languages. And he included these articles in the encyclopedia of G. Tukai. The article also focuses on the work of poet and educator S. Majitov, a Tatar by nationality, who lived in Karakalpakstan and participated in the creation of textbooks on the Karakalpak language. In the 20s of the twentieth century, he created the first textbooks for Karakalpak schools, engaged in education, worked and directed a school in the Kungrad district. He is also a poet, writer and playwright. He wrote his works in the Karakalpak language. He actively participated in the creation of the Karakalpak alphabet and orthography. The article notes the merits of Tatar and Karakalpak scientists and poets who put a bridge on international relations and cooperation in the field of philology.

Pastoral Rules: Pomerius, Gregory the Great and the Making of Patristic Tradition

Scholars have debated how the themes discussed by Pomerius in his De vita contemplativa found ample resonance across Gregory the Great's work, and reflect similar concerns. While it is impossible to determine whether the Roman bishop read the treatise authored by the North African rhetor, their parallel authority on the matter was recognised by Carolingian copyists, who often reported their works alongside each other. The discovery of a glossa sourced from Gregory's literary production in Pomerius’ manuscript tradition might both substantiate this claim and shed some light on the networks of medieval scriptoria.

Serum Biochemistry and Haematology Alterations in Sled Dogs Before and After a Race

Abstract Long-distance sled dogs are known for their great endurance and ability to run several hundred kilometres over the course of a few days. There are several factors to consider when selecting a team of high-performing sled dogs, including their physique, body score condition, appetite, paws, and ability to adapt to unknown environments and situations. The most common breed used in sled dog racing, Alaska Huskies, are known for their great work diligence, and determined mindset. It has previously been researched how well these dogs endure such intense physical activity using observation of behavioural patterns, physical examinations, and the analysis of alterations in blood parameters. This study aimed to evaluate serum chemistry and haematology alterations in dogs before and after completing a 300 km race in Norway. Changes were observed in haematology and serum chemistry between pre- and post-race blood sampling. Significant increases were observed in the white blood cell count, haemoglobin in blood and creatine phosphokine activity in serum (CK), and significant decreases were seen in the electrolytes (e.g., chlorides, potassium), cholesterol levels, liver (e.g., alkaline phosphatase) and pancreatic enzymes (α-amylase, lipase), and total red blood cell count. Several other parameters were measured, and resulted in insignificant changes. Our results indicated that long-distance racing, in fact, has an impact on the physiology of the dog, influencing muscular system, the gastrointestinal tract, electrolyte balance and haematopoiesis among others.

THE STORY “ZINDAN” BY GAYAZ ISKHAKI IN THE LITERARY CONTEXT OF THE EPOCH

The classic of Tatar literature Gayaz Iskhaki was born in Kutlushkino (Yaushirma) village of Chistopolsky district in the family of a famous mullah who engaged in education and charity. First, he received knowledge, love for books and reading from parents and maternal grandmother and later in the day school of the village. He continued his studies in a famous in the Muslim world of Russia and the countries of the East madrasah of Zakir Kamalov, which not only produced future imams, hazrats, but also teachers for other madrasahs. This period of his life spent in Chistopolsky district laid the foundation for the worldview of the future writer and thinker and played an important role in shaping the personality of G. Ishaki. It was there, in the Chistopolsky prison, that the autobiographical novel "Zindan" was written, which testifies to his passion for revolutionary ideas and reflects the real facts from the life of the Chistopolsky prison. The autobiographical work "Zindan" is based on real events and provided with various historical and cultural facts and details from the literary life of the epoch. The text reflects the perception of current events by the writer who was the witness and an active participant in them. The novel "Zindan" was published in a separate edition in Kazan in 1907. Due to the humanity of the censor N.F. Katanov, the book was not confiscated and criminal prosecution against the author was not initiated. The interest of the Central Committee of Foreign Censorship of St. Petersburg manifested in 1908 in relation to the work of G. Iskhaki led to a thorough examination of the content of "Zindan" by another member of the Kazan Provisional Committee for Press Affairs N.I. Ashmarin in order to search for places with signs of "crimes". His review led to the decision of the Committee to seize Iskhaki's pamphlet "Zindan" because of the illegal content, bringing the author to criminal responsibility under the article 129 of the Criminal Code. The author of the article summarized the material on the period from the biography of G. Iskhaki spent in Chistopolsky district and revealed the great work of the scientific community of Tatarstan to return its literary heritage to the history of Tatar literature of the twentieth century. The interpretation of the story "Zindan" by various literary critics in the historical, cultural and literary context of the epoch showed that the story "Zindan" in the form of a prison chronicle introduced new ideological and thematic tones into Tatar literature and gave impetus to the rapid development of the autobiographical genre in Tatar literature being of high value as a historical source.

An Analysis of Lexical Cohesion in the Text “After Twenty Years”

Lexical cohesion plays an important role in forming a discourse, which effectively connects different part of the text and contributes to the main idea. In terms of short stories, lexical cohesion aims to linguistically enhance plot description, image building and theme expression. This study investigates the lexical devices in the short story After Twenty Years written by O. Henry. By means of discourse analysis, it turns out that O. Henry takes advantage of both reiteration and collocation. For one thing, four kinds of lexical cohesion, including repetition, synonym or near-synonym, superordinate, and general word, are all used in the text to form lexical cohesion. For another, multiple collocation chains manage to integrate the scene, the characters, and the plot from different dimensions. The overall result shows that the short story is highly cohesive, which largely makes it a great work around the world.

Natural contra human sciences: the conflict between nomothetic and idiographic sciences, with special reference to S. J. Boëthius

ABSTRACT This article tackles issues central to most academic disciplines, including scientific boundary demarcation, the battle of the faculties, the theory of science, and the conflict between nomothetic and idiographic methodologies, that is, between the two main approaches to science. It does so through discovering and rethinking a Methodenstreit in Swedish political science, an academic dispute involving Professor Rudolf Kjellén, the father of geopolitics, and his greatest rival, Professor S. J. Boëthius. Shortly after retiring from the Johan Skytte Professorship at Uppsala University, S. J. Boëthius published a great but inaccessible work on state theory and its history entitled Om statslivet (On the life of the state, 1916). The book critiques the positivistic and nomothetic (law-searching) approaches of the burgeoning social sciences, which were emancipating themselves from their father, history, and becoming independent disciplines. Boëthius critiqued the nomothetic studies of history, economics, statistics, sociology, and geopolitics for overemphasizing the significance of historical, economic, statistical, sociological, and geographical environments and structures. Thus, the exponents of these new or changing disciplines were criticized for neglecting the most important driving force of human affairs in Boëthius’s mind, namely, the power of personality and individual free will.

PRESENTISM AND THE POLITICS OF HISTORY: REVISITING THE 2022 JAMES SWEET AFFAIR

Abstract: This article revisits the debate over presentism in historical writing touched off by American Historical Association President James Sweet in an August 2022 column for the Association’s newsletter. Sweet’s statement, expressing concern that historians motivated by today’s political concerns sometimes distort historical evidence, sparked a flurry of responses, mostly from detractors in public and supporters in private. Leaders in the profession and writers in the popular press articulated in response a mainstream compromise position: present-day concerns are an entirely legitimate point of departure for historians but must be held in check by respect for research integrity. This article challenges the rhetorical binary between presentism and strict empiricism, arguing that framing the issue in this way downplays the most important characteristic of ‘good history’, interpretive originality. Neither political passion nor scrupulous research suffice to produce great works of history which typically originate in creatively counter-intuitive thinking.

Humanistyczne zakorzenienie vs. egzystencjalna bezdomność: debata Iwanow – Gerszenzon w świetle dylematów historiozofii nowoczesnej

The paper revisits the dialogue between Vyacheslav Ivanov and Mikhail Gershenzon in order to present two essentially different orientations in the approach to humanistic heritage and its meaning in human life. The first of these two perspectives is represented by V. Ivanov who feels amongst the great works of culture “at home,” who praises their charms and spiritual-aesthetic riches. The second perspective – as evoked by Gershenzon – is more pessimistic, existentially inclined, filled with tragic awareness. It points out to the problem of crucial importance to the historiosophical self-awareness of modernity: the accumulation of cultural knowledge and the release of theoretical reflection have alienated the human being and cast it into existential homelessness. The paper further argues that (1) there exists an irreducible hiatus between culture and the reality with its power of negativity, and that (2) the ambassadors of culture, such as Ivanov, conceal this hiatus in an attempt to convince us that theoretical humanistic reflection intensifies our perception of the world, while in Gersenzhon’s historiosophical view it ruins the immediacy and spontaneity of life.

Long-Term Impact of a Medical School Course on the Intersection of Art and Medical History.

One recent trend in medical education is the integration of humanities into the curriculum, including viewing works of art in museums, with analysis of short-term, but not long-term, impact. We developed a course for medical students, trainees, and faculty at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai co-taught by an art historian and a physician/medical historian that features images of great works of art to make connections between art and medical history with the following goals: 1. To encourage the students to make careful and systematic observations, describe what they see to others in the group, and exchange their views respectfully, 2. To sensitize students to the patient's experience of illness by discussing artists' depictions of patients and the impact of their illness on family and friends, and 3. To highlight milestones in medical history by focusing on artworks that epitomize the state of medical care and science at a defined point in time. We have taught the course for more than a decade and so wanted to assess whether participating in the course had a long-term impact. We created and deployed a five-question survey to 167 students and received responses from 35 of those students. 97% of respondents answered that they still think about the course, and large majorities of the respondents indicated that the course, had an impact on how they viewed works of art (91%), their appreciation of the history of medicine (89%), and their observational skills (80%). More than half the students responded that the course sensitized them to the patient's perspective of illness (63%) and had an impact on how they viewed their role as a physician (51%). Our course has had a long-term impact on the respondents across a wide range of professional and personal characteristics.

Welcome to the first issue of the College’s Asia Pacific Journal of Health Management for 2024.

The College is going from strength to strength with membership increasing notably over the past few months and great attendance at College free webcast events as well as growing participation in other ACHSM professional development opportunities. In March a very successful one day Conference was held in Auckland, New Zealand with many from Australia and nearby countries amongst the more than 250 who attended this event. Through attending that conference, we now have 58 new College members in New Zealand who can take advantage of the benefits of College membership like this Journal, free webcasts, local networking events and access to bespoke professional development for health leaders. Our Fellowship Program for 2024 has commenced with 46 Associate Fellows applying themselves to our most prestigious capstone program. Further we have over 30 current enrolments to undertake Certification with those College members committing to maintaining their profession through the expectations of this credential. We also launched a Managing Digital Health micro credential that aligns fully with the digital health competencies in the ACHSM Master Health Service Management Competency Framework. We are in the process of distributing digital badges to all membership levels and Certified Health Managers and Executives for use on media such as LinkedIn, CVs and email signatures. These badges provide and outline of what it means to be a Fellow, Certified Health Manager or Executive of ACHSM. In this issue, as is the purpose of the Journal, there are learned articles on the importance of continuing to self-reflect on our leadership behaviours and workplace relationships. I take this opportunity of thanking Prof Mark Avery our Editor for his great work in maintaining a high quality of publication and ensuring relevancy to leaders in all sectors. I commend these to you and continue to wish you success in your ongoing leadership journey.

واکاوی انواع هنجارگریزی معنایی در کلیله و دمنة نصرالله منشی

The essential and irrefutable position of the Persian language and literature as one of the most significant and influential literatures among the world literature is a clear and obvious thing, and in the meantime, the amazing influence that the language has as the main means of communication and creation of works of art on The literature is brilliant. Poets and writers can use different tools to take advantage of the power of language in literature so that to enrich their literary works. One of the tools is the semantic avoidance. Semantic norm avoidance is one of the tools of literary creation in poetry, and its investigation in prose will lead to its manifestation and poeticization. The authors of the research, using the descriptive-analytical method and library studies, while relying on the model presented by Farzan Sajudi (1378), to categorize the types of semantic norm avoidance based on the framework proposed by Leach (1969), to define semantic norm avoidance. In terms of prostration and explanation of its types, they have presented the frequency of each of them in the book of Kalileh and Demneh. The results of this research show that in the book Kalileh and Demnah Nasrullah Munshi, semantic deviance by the method of objectification is used more and its frequency compared to other types of semantic deviance is more, and this topic can be used in stylistics studies. This great work and its difference with other works of the same period should be taken into consideration.

Features of translation of similes in literary translation (based on J. Rowling's novel “Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone”)

The scientific paper analyzes the transmission of similes in literary translation from English into Kazakh. On the example of the literary translation of J. Rowling “Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone”, the problems of using similes in the source language and their translation to the target language are considered. Based on the theoretical work of domestic and foreign scientists who studied similes, the problems of the features of their application, classification and translation are studied. At the same time, the features of literary translation and its importance in the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage were considered. In the course of the study, the problem of preserving the style, tone, meaning and spirit of similes when translating similes structures from the source language into the target language was discussed. Various ways of translating similes were also discussed, taking into account cultural differences and characteristics of the target audience. The problems faced by translators, such as the gap between linguistic forms and cultural contexts, are studied. Summarizing the article, it was concluded that the study of literary translation is one of the most pressing issues for preserving linguistic and cultural diversity in world literature and providing Kazakh-speaking readers with the opportunity to enjoy great works.
