Benefits of disease-specific summer camps: Results from quantitative and qualitative studies at Roundup River Ranch

BackgroundThe purpose of this study is to examine the benefits of disease-specific summer camps (DSSC) for children with chronic and/or life-threatening illnesses. MethodsParticipants were children (11–17 years) attending DSSC during summer 2015. The quantitative study evaluated positive affect, meaning/purpose, and peer relationships at three time points (before camp, one week after camp, and three months after camp). Linear mixed models assessed changes in outcomes before and after camp for new and returning campers. The qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with questions about camper mood, goals, and peer interactions, both at camp and at home. A two-phase thematic analysis was utilized with operational definitions of themes derived from Social Comparison Theory and Psychosocial Development Theory. ResultsCampers reported more positive affect, greater meaning and purpose, and improvement in quality of peer relationships one week after camp; however, changes were not maintained three months after camp. The most common benefit of DSSC identified in the interviews was self-efficacy, followed by emotional support and positive mood. Social comparisons were made by 74% of campers. Acceptance (i.e., by peers, of self, of illness) was the most common benefit maintained after camp. ConclusionsStudy results provide greater insight into the social, emotional, and developmental benefits of attending DSSC, and highlight avenues for future intervention or program development (e.g., community-based camp events, school/peer education programs). Further, results can be used to assist camp directors and planners with age and disease-specific programming as well as support fundraising efforts for DSSC.

Diálogo e sentido: vida espiritual e encontro inter-religioso na sociedade contemporânea

Ao analisar o desenvolvimento da sociedade moderna, percebemos que, a despeito de todo o progresso econômico e tecnológico, a sociedade vive um momento de crise espiritual. Na realidade brasileira, esse contexto de globalização e pluralidade, somado à procura cada vez maior das pessoas por experiências espirituais e religiosas, torna o convívio com as diversidades religiosas um desafio urgente. Sendo assim, o objetivo dessa pesquisa é refletir sobre as necessidades e possibilidades do ser humano contemporâneo encontrar sentido para sua vida e, principalmente, compreender como as religiões podem contribuir para favorecer esse movimento ontologicamente humano. Não obstante todos os meios de comunicação que favorecem o contato, o ser humano contemporâneo tem se mostrado cada vez mais fechado e intolerante em relação às diversidades. Precisamos pensar critérios para um convívio com as diversidades que considere-o em sua totalidade e que proporcione mais sentido e paz para a humanidade. Nesse sentido, acreditamos que as religiões podem contribuir, através do diálogo entre elas, para a ampliação da consciência em relação às alteridades, através do cultivo do cuidado consigo, com o outro e com a nossa casa comum. As premissas do diálogo inter-religioso pressupõem abertura dialogal, humildade, conhecimento de si, reconhecimento da alteridade e, portanto, vão ao encontro da estrutura humana e da necessidade que temos de nos constituirmos como pessoa e de oferecer um sentido para a nossa existência, a partir e através dos nossos relacionamentos. Como procedimento metodológico, foi dada preferência para revisão bibliográfica. Em um primeiro momento, contemplamos a estrutura humana de acordo com a perspectiva da psicologia fenomenológica. Destacamos o ser humano como um ser relacional, que se estrutura a partir do convívio com as alteridades e que, no contato com o mundo, busca um sentido para sua existência. Em seguida, apresentamos as características da sociedade contemporânea em relação aos axiomas que a sustentam e quais as consequências desse modo de vida na compreensão que o ser humano tem de si mesmo, dos outros e do mundo. Por fim, mostramos a importância do diálogo, sobretudo do diálogo inter-religioso nesse contexto de pluralidade. E tendo em vista a responsabilidade das religiões na construção dessas pontes, consideramos que uma práxis dialogal pode favorecer a construção da subjetividade humana e uma convivência com a diversidade que priorize o cuidado com as alteridades.

Speaking language? The politics of language and power in Saga

Abstract Linguists like to joke that a language is a ‘dialect with an army and navy’, a suggestion which takes on even greater meaning within the universe of Saga, where the strongest military powers speak a dialect known as Language. This analysis explores the power of language in Saga, the continuing series by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples. The series uses the graphic-verbal medium of comics to draw special attention to the use of language and to portray linguistic power dynamics within the story. This analysis will first discuss the depiction of linguistic identity and multilingualism in Saga through the use of lettering, discourse and constructed language. The second portion of this analysis will examine two characters through their use of language, artistic representation and lettering: a power holder seeking to maintain power, Prince Robot IV, and a talking animal who subverts power structures with a one-word vocabulary, Lying Cat.

Where, O death, is thy sting? The meaning-providing function of beliefs in literal immortality

ABSTRACTTerror management theory suggests that humans invest in cultural worldviews that allay mortality-related anxiety by promising death transcendence. Many religious individuals adhere to belief in literal immortality – believing that one will live on after death. Across two studies (n = 1137), we explored the terror management function of such beliefs by exploring whether these beliefs are associated with lower death anxiety and greater meaning among individuals of varying religiousness. In both Study 1 (n = 236) and Study 2 (n = 901), belief in literal immortality was related to lower death anxiety only among intrinsically religious participants. Moreover, meaning in life mediated the relationship between belief in literal immortality and death anxiety. Study 2 clarified that this mediational relationship was only present for intrinsically religious individuals. We discuss the importance of particular religious beliefs in the provision of meaning in order to manage existential concerns.

Negotiating the complexity of curriculum integration: metalanguages as levers that shape the innovation process

This paper describes an instrumental case study that examined interactions amongst school teachers and curriculum leaders in the midst of developing integrated curriculum. Using the dual framework of curriculum as a socio-cultural entity and of curriculum as praxis, the study found that the school-wide curriculum vision that anchored the curriculum integration process catalysed teachers' negotiations and collaborations. This intensified attention to learners' thinking and creative production during lessons. Teachers began to question their personal connections to other disciplines which prompted them to re-consider their routine instructional practices. Analysis of teacher exchanges and interviews pointed to metalanguages, an assemblage of abstract ideas and symbols that supported and sustained the process of curriculum integration. We argue that understanding the ways that metalanguages tie together subject matter considerations, teachers' perspective of teaching the subject and their desire to meet learners' needs inspires greater meaning and commitment for all stakeholders during curriculum integration.

A closer look at the hedonics of everyday meaning and satisfaction.

Contrasts between eudaimonic well-being and hedonic well-being often compare meaning and happiness. Less work has examined the extent to which meaning and satisfaction can be distinguished. Across 5 diary studies (N = 923) and a large cross-sectional survey (N = 1,471), we examined the affective profile of meaning and satisfaction in everyday life. Using response surface methodology, both judgments were modeled as a joint function of positive (PA) and negative (NA) affect. Affective discrepancy (preponderance of PA over NA) was more strongly associated with satisfaction than meaning. In general, meaning correlated less with affect than satisfaction, but the 2 judgments differ more in their correlation with NA than PA. This implies that people are sometimes able to derive meaning (but not necessarily satisfaction) from negative experiences. We content-coded the events reported by participants for goal directedness, social interactions, and their potential future impact. Interpersonal conflicts and impactful negative events were associated with less satisfaction and meaning at zero-order. However, after controlling for affect and satisfaction, these negative experiences were associated with greater meaning. This effect may reflect additional cognitive processes that enhance meaning but not satisfaction. In all studies, we also observed a positivity dominance effect: At subjectively equivalent levels, PA is weighted more than NA in judgments of meaning and satisfaction. A Study on Communicative Method Education for the Developing Workplace Literacy - Focusing on the health and medical field

In the field of Korean languae education was to be a discussion about whether the Korean language education can play a role in workplace literacy and adult literacy education. In this regard, studies related to the ability to communicate within the National Competency Standards(NCS) will have greater meaning. But will to ensure that the transition of universal communication capabilities and strategies in dealing mainly in the Korean language far a particular job situation to take advantage by finding a specific job communication strategies in language training in order to develop workplace literacy, namely the situation of the communication strategy(context), it is necessary above all to the materials, and activities. When this point has been overlooked, because even if we set a practical language courses, even if it is difficult to deal with workplace literacy efficiently at the language teaching-learning scene. This study looked at this issue ordinances covered the SBAR communication model that is being actively discussed in the health and medical field. S(situation)-B(background)-A(assessment)-R(recommendations) are very effective method in reducing the risk of medical errors through improved communication of the decision to increase the satisfaction of the members of medical personnel and patients and it has excellent scalability. Therefore, this model seems to be able to take advantage of a variety of Korean language teaching methods and materials for literacy development and to respond to the NCS communication skills.

Fitness, Well-Being, and Preparation for Death

Many of the messages we receive about fitness can undermine well-being and promote bodily dissatisfaction and intersectional injustice. To address this, I argue in this essay that we should broaden the goals of fitness to include preparation for life events such as aging, disability, reproduction, and death. Using the example of death, I show how sport and exercise can prepare us physically and psychologically for dying with greater meaning and equanimity—and, in the process, support greater well-being in life. Such preparation can also strengthen our resistance to sources of bodily dissatisfaction, personal unhappiness, and intersectional injustice in fitness and health related contexts.

Seeker-friendly: The Hillsong megachurch as an enchanting total institution

The increasingly voluntary quality of religious expression has prompted many faith-based entities to embrace ‘secular’ means of evangelism. This is evident within the Sydney-based Hillsong Church, which has grown rapidly in attendees, capital resources and global reach. This ‘seeker-friendly’ strategy, however, raises questions around whether the ‘megachurch’ can sustain itself in offering respite from wearying Weberian processes of rationalisation and disenchantment. Hillsong’s resolution of this dilemma has been to create an encompassing arena of enchantment for constituents, a contemporary Goffmanian ‘total institution’ by reproducing the unalterable mechanisms of the economic order in a way that imbues them with greater meaning. Loyalties are sought by aligning desires for both personal reinvention and collective subsumption with the overarching evangelical aims of the Church. Thus for the committed devotee the transcendent and pragmatic may become synonymous and imbued with wonder, so that any gnawing dissonance felt as characteristic of late capitalism may be reconciled.

THE EFFECT OF SPIRITUAL INTELLIGENCE TO INCREASE ORGANIZATION PERFORMANCE THROUGH WORKERS JOB SATISFACTION

Spiritual intelligence enables people to live with the greater meaning and depth and to look for a meaning beyond the physical needs and a low-level life in their business. Spiritual intelligence will also assist the workers in achieving their happiness and satisfaction with their current jobs.In the long run, spiritual intelligence will help the organizations to achieve business objectives and allow the employees to flourish within the organization. The main objective of this study is to analyze the effect of worker’s spiritual intelligence to achieve organization performance using workers job satisfaction as mediating variable. This study is choosing some management practices in Indonesian biggest developer companies. Respondents in this research consist of workers in all business units owned by those developer companies. All the data is statistically analyzed using the Structural Equation Method model. Findings of this research indicate that there’s a positive effect between spiritual intelligence workers and job satisfaction. The study also proved that as long as the workers satisfied with their jobs, their productivity will increase and finally the organization performance will also improve. The future research should consider the importance role of the leader for organization performance by setting-up core value within organization. This study is the first, to the researcher’s knowledge, to see the effect of all dimensions of spiritual intelligence into workers job satisfaction and finally to improve organization performance.

Stigma, activism, and well-being among people living with HIV

ABSTRACTEvidence demonstrates that HIV stigma undermines the psychological and physical health of people living with HIV (PLWH). Yet, PLWH describe engaging in HIV activism to challenge stigma, and research suggests that individuals may benefit from activism. We examine associations between experiences of HIV stigma and HIV activism, and test whether HIV activists benefit from greater well-being than non-activists. Participants include 93 PLWH recruited from drop-in centers, housing programs, and other organizations providing services to PLWH in the Northeastern USA between 2012 and 2013 (mean age = 50 years; 56% Black, 20% White, 18% Other; 61% non-Latino(a), 39% Latino(a); 59% male, 38% female, 3% transgender; 82% heterosexual, 15% sexual minority). Participants completed a cross-sectional written survey. Results of regression analyses suggest that PLWH who experienced greater enacted stigma engaged in greater HIV activism. Anticipated, internalized, and perceived public stigma, however, were unrelated to HIV activism. Moreover, results of a multivariate analysis of variance suggest that HIV activists reported greater social network integration, greater social well-being, greater engagement in active coping with discrimination, and greater meaning in life than non-activists. Yet, HIV activists also reported somewhat greater depressive symptoms than non-activists, suggesting that the association between HIV activism and well-being is complex. By differentiating between HIV stigma mechanisms, the current study provides a more nuanced understanding of which experiences of HIV stigma may be associated with HIV activism. It further suggests that engagement in activism may offer benefits to PLWH, while raising the possibility that activists could experience greater depressive symptoms than non-activists. Given the preliminary nature of this study, future research should continue to examine these complex associations between HIV stigma, activism, and well-being among PLWH. As this work continues, PLWH, as well as interventionists and clinicians invested in improving well-being among PLWH, should carefully weigh the benefits and potential costs of activism.

Transformative Learning Factors to Enhance Integral Healthy Organizations

This article focuses on how organizations search for the key factors to develop integral changes and determine broader and higher transcendental learning skills in order to achieve healthy and sustainable organizational growth more effectively and efficiently. This study employed qualitative approaches. The research method used is an in-depth interview of 16 key informants in the field of Non-Formal Education, Transformation, and Healthy Organization Development in Thailand, from both private and government entities. The key query was that in the next 10 years, what will the healthier sustainable organizations look like and what are the main factors to enhance integral healthy organizations? The data was analyzed and interpreted with content-analysis techniques in understanding key factors with insights of how to uplift organizational well-being. Results yielded the eight essential factors for development of a healthy organization integrally – Principle, Physical, Mind, Intellectual, Emotion, Organization, Social, and Environment which are all reciprocally interconnected to accomplish a resilient and sustainable healthy organization. To achieve an integral healthy organization, a balanced organizational structure and climate are required to support change through perspective transformation in order to further develop mutual trust and respect. In addition, public consciousness and systematic ecological worldview development are essential for the realization that organizations are whole and at the same time are parts of the higher whole. It is anticipated that these findings will (1) contribute meaningful information of what are the key factors relating to the development of integral healthy organization, (2) contribute insights as to how those factors interact sequentially and systematically to achieve the greater meaning of balanced and resilient organizations, (3) contribute to learning about conditions impacting organizational direction and alignment to meet with sustainable growth and transcendental competitiveness, and (4) be a resource for further study.

Finding meaning through emotional understanding: emotional clarity predicts meaning in life and adjustment to existential threat

If emotions provide information relevant to personal meaning, then people with a greater sense of clarity about their emotions may possess some advantages in finding meaning in their lives. Consistent with this, in Studies 1, 2, and 3 we found that individuals high in trait emotional clarity have greater meaning in life. However, meaning is often undermined by existential threats. In two subsequent studies we measured (Study 4) or manipulated (Study 5) existentially threatening thoughts, and then measured meaning in life. Results showed that elevated death thoughts were associated with deficits in meaning for individuals with low, but not high, in trait emotional clarity. Taken together, these studies demonstrate that the extent to which one clearly understands their emotions contributes to perceptions of meaning in life and the maintenance of meaning in the context of existential threat.

Health Care Design: Current and Potential Research and Development

Design and Health Care Reflecting on design in the context of medicine and health care is relatively new. The research project carried out by Bruce Archer in the early 1960s, which eventually led to the “King’s Fund Bed”—a prototype of all modern hospital beds—counts among the first instances of design in medicine. In the meantime, in a wide array of more or less established situations in medical practice, design has made an important difference; this area of specialization is now known as medical design.1 In industrial design, many medical aids and devices have been developed for patients, doctors, and nursing staff, or even as capital goods for hospitals and doctors’ practices. The design of clinics and rehabilitation centers—both their architectural and interior design—makes various contributions to improvements in therapy and care processes. E-Health is an umbrella term for concepts ranging from telediagnostics, telemonitoring, and e-counseling to efforts to form a network for the health care system. These concepts involve Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-supported system design, which is also connected to the desire to digitalize patient data allow multiple points of access for several health care sectors.2 Furthermore, service design is trying to use the methods of empirical social research to develop concepts aimed at the optimization or new development of medical treatment or care processes. Neologisms, such as “co-design” or “participatory health care design” express that the clients’ experiences and patient participation are taking on greater meaning.

Functional analysis of prismatic blades and bladelets from Pinson Mounds, Tennessee

The essay argues, first, that Beethoven’s attraction to Goethe’s Faust I and the Flohlied, which he read in 1790 at the age of nineteen, carries greater meaning than simply being an expression of sassy humour. Instead, Beethoven’s initial interest is best understood within the context of Bonn’s belated Enlightenment and its lasting impact on the composer. Second, the paper discusses Beethoven’s perplexing decision to include the incongruous satirical song among a group of six Lieder, published as op. 75 in 1810. How Retaking the Entrance Examination Can Enhance Student Quality of Life at University

We examined how the experience of retaking the college entrance examination (RCEE), along with levels of resilience and social support, affect individuals' experience of life change at university, their satisfaction with university life, and how meaningful they perceived their lives to be. We analyzed survey data from 524 university students in Korea (204 men and 320 women; 203 students with RCEE experience and 321 students with no RCEE experience). Results showed that students with RCEE experience underwent a positive life change, and that resilience and good social support led to a synergistic effect of the RCEE experience on the change. Furthermore, the RCEE experience, being resilient, and having a high level of social support resulted in those students having an increase in satisfaction with, and finding greater meaning in, university life. These results are discussed in terms of growth following adversity.

Organizational Justice as Predictor of Activity of the Position, Achieving Result, and Developing further Potential

The management discourse has increasingly focused on the performance of the organizations to meet the challenges of global competition. The performance can be enhanced when organizations tend to restructure the process and policies through increased managerial effectiveness. The relationship between organizational justice and managerial effectiveness in terms of activities of the position, achieving the results, and developing further potential has received very little attention in the literature. An initiative has been taken to study organizational justice as predictor of managerial effectiveness, with a viewpoint to sustain efficient managers and performance as the upcoming generation of managers have a desire for greater justice for greater meaning and personal development from their work, and would prefer to call their work enjoyable and socially useful, along with the fulfillment of personal and professional aspirations with increased effectiveness. This is a survey-based empirical study of 300 managers based in India. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted to find out the results. The results reveal that the distribution of rewards, organizational policies and procedures, and interpersonal treatment determine the positive behavior patterns, along with emotional and cognitive balances, for perceiving the job as a calling and enjoying it.
