Automated image acquisition and analysis of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride from pristine to highly defective and amorphous structures

Defect-engineered and even amorphous two-dimensional (2D) materials have recently gained interest due to properties that differ from their pristine counterparts. Since these properties are highly sensitive to the exact atomic structure, it is crucial to be able to characterize them at atomic resolution over large areas. This is only possible when the imaging process is automated to reduce the time spent on manual imaging, which at the same time reduces the observer bias in selecting the imaged areas. Since the necessary datasets include at least hundreds if not thousands of images, the analysis process similarly needs to be automated. Here, we introduce disorder into graphene and monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) using low-energy argon ion irradiation, and characterize the resulting disordered structures using automated scanning transmission electron microscopy annular dark field imaging combined with convolutional neural network-based analysis techniques. We show that disorder manifests in these materials in a markedly different way, where graphene accommodates vacancy-type defects by transforming hexagonal carbon rings into other polygonal shapes, whereas in hBN the disorder is observed simply as vacant lattice sites with very little rearrangement of the remaining atoms. Correspondingly, in the case of graphene, the highest introduced disorder leads to an amorphous membrane, whereas in hBN, the highly defective lattice contains a large number of vacancies and small pores with no indication of amorphisation. Overall, our study demonstrates that combining automated imaging and image analysis is a powerful way to characterize the structure of disordered and amorphous 2D materials, while also illustrating some of the remaining shortcomings with this methodology.

Coulomb Drag in Graphene/h-BN/Graphene Moiré Heterostructures.

We report on the observation of Coulomb drag between graphene-hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) moiré heterostructure with a moiré wavelength of ∼14 nm and an intrinsic graphene with a lattice constant of ∼0.25 nm. By tuning carrier densities of each graphene layer independently, we find that charge carriers in moiré minibands, i.e., near satellite Dirac point (sDP), can be coupled with massless Fermions near the original Dirac point (oDP), strongly enough to generate a finite drag resistivity. At high temperature (T) and large density (n), the drag resistivities near both oDP and sDP follow a typical n^{-α} (α=1.3-1.7) and T^{2} power law dependence as expected for the momentum transfer process and it also satisfies the layer reciprocity. In contrast, at low T, the layer reciprocity is broken in both oDP-oDP and sDP-oDP coupled regions that suggest dominant energy drag. Furthermore, quantitatively, the drag resistivities near sDPs are smaller than those near oDP and they deviate from T^{2} dependence below ∼100 K. Our work demonstrates that the drag experiment can be used to investigate the coupling between the carriers in moiré minibands and those in original Dirac bands which can be extended to other moiré materials.

Mechanical, Fracture, and Thermal Characterization of Post-Cured Hybrid Epoxy Nanocomposites Reinforced with Graphene Nanoplatelets and h-Boron Nitride

The post-curing process of cured composites is essential in enhancing the strength, stiffness, elevating the glass transition temperature, and reducing residual stress in polymer thermoset composites. The curing temperature and time are the key factors that affect these properties. In-situ polymerization method was used to prepare composites with varying weight percentages of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanofillers (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 wt% GNP-based composites; 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 wt% h-BN-based composites; 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 wt% h-BN+GNP-based composites). The cured composites were post-cured at temperatures of 80°C, 120°C, and 160°C for 120 minutes in a hot air oven. The presence of GNPs and h-BNs in the composites is confirmed using Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Further mechanical and thermal properties were evaluated by conducting tensile, flexural, impact, fracture and differential scanning thermometry (DSC) tests. The simulation analyses were performed using Ansys software, and the results demonstrated a strong correlation with the experimental data, with discrepancies between the two consistently within a standard margin of 20%.

Deterministic fabrication of graphene hexagonal boron nitride moiré superlattices

The electronic properties of moiré heterostructures depend sensitively on the relative orientation between layers of the stack. For example, near-magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) commonly shows superconductivity, yet a TBG sample with one of the graphene layers rotationally aligned to a hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) cladding layer provided experimental observation of orbital ferromagnetism. To create samples with aligned graphene/hBN, researchers often align edges of exfoliated flakes that appear straight in optical micrographs. However, graphene or hBN can cleave along either zig-zag or armchair lattice directions, introducing a [Formula: see text] ambiguity in the relative orientation of two flakes. By characterizing the crystal lattice orientation of exfoliated flakes prior to stacking using Raman and second-harmonic generation for graphene and hBN, respectively, we unambiguously align monolayer graphene to hBN at a near-[Formula: see text], not [Formula: see text], relative twist angle. We confirm this alignment by torsional force microscopy of the graphene/hBN moiré on an open-face stack, and then by cryogenic transport measurements, after full encapsulation with a second, nonaligned hBN layer. This work demonstrates a key step toward systematically exploring the effects of the relative twist angle between dissimilar materials within moiré heterostructures.

Interplay of valley, layer and band topology towards interacting quantum phases in moiré bilayer graphene

In Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BBG), the Landau levels give rise to an intimate connection between valley and layer degrees of freedom. Adding a moiré superlattice potential enriches the BBG physics with the formation of topological minibands — potentially leading to tunable exotic quantum transport. Here, we present magnetotransport measurements of a high-quality bilayer graphene–hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructure. The zero-degree alignment generates a strong moiré superlattice potential for the electrons in BBG and the resulting Landau fan diagram of longitudinal and Hall resistance displays a Hofstadter butterfly pattern with a high level of detail. We demonstrate that the intricate relationship between valley and layer degrees of freedom controls the topology of moiré-induced bands, significantly influencing the energetics of interacting quantum phases in the BBG superlattice. We further observe signatures of field-induced correlated insulators, helical edge states and clear quantizations of interaction-driven topological quantum phases, such as symmetry broken Chern insulators.

Enhancing Lubrication Performance of Plastic Oil Lubricant with Oleic Acid-Functionalized Graphene Nanoplatelets and Hexagonal Boron Nitride Solid Lubricant Additives

The study explored the viability of using waste plastic oil (PO) as an alternative lubricant to petroleum-based lubricants in industrial settings. To enhance the lubrication performance of the PO, this study incorporated cost-efficient, oleic acid-modified, graphene nano platelets [GNP (f)] and hexagonal boron nitride [hBN (f)] nano solid lubricant additives into the PO in various concentrations, forming functionalized nano lubricants. The PO and its functionalized nano lubricant’s rheological, dispersion stability, thermal degradation, friction, and wear performance were investigated. Results manifest that incorporating GNP (f) and hBN (f) into the PO significantly enhanced the viscosity and dispersion stability. In addition, it was seen that GNP (f) and hBN (f) nano lubricants lowered the coefficient of friction (COF) by 53% and 63.63% respectively, compared to the PO. However, the GNP (f) and hBN (f) nano lubricants demonstrated a 3.16% decrease and a 50.08% increase in wear volume relative to the PO. Overall, the GNP (f) and hBN (f) nano lubricants displayed a synergistic friction behavior, while they exhibited an antagonistic behavior pertaining to the wear volume. The study elucidated the mechanisms underlying friction and wear performance of the nano lubricants.

Coupling field optimization to improve the thermal transport of Gr/h-BN heterostructure

We perform a numerical evaluation on the multi-physical field coupling effect to improve the interfacial thermal conductivity (ITC) of Gr/h-BN (Graphene/Hexagonal boron nitride) planar heterostructure. The model of Gr/h-BN planar heterostructure (C-BN bonded configuration) is built to investigate the effect of the multifactor coupling effect of different temperatures, N-doping concentration, and single vacancy concentration on the ITC. Finally, the Box-Behnken orthogonal model is established to determine the optimal value of ITC under the coupling effect of multi-physical fields by response surface analysis, and the optimal value of ITC is 14.456 GW m−2 K−1 when the temperature is 673 K, the single vacancy is 2.57 %, and the N-doping is 18.9 %. It implies that the proper coupling configuration is found effective in improving the interfacial thermal conductivity of the Gr/h-BN heterostructure. This work is hoped to help promote the thermal reliability design of graphene heterogeneous interface for related micro/nano semiconductor devices.

Polarization-insensitive perfect absorption in van der waals hyper-structure

Infrared perfect absorption has been widely investigated due to its potential applications in photodetectors, photovoltaics and medical diagnostics. In this report, we demonstrate that at particular infrared frequencies, a simple planar structure made up of graphene-hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) hyper-structure is able to nearly perfectly absorb incident light irrespective of its polarization (Transverse-Magnetic TM, or Transverse-Electric TE). By using this interferenceless technique, the hyper-structure achieves nearly zero reflectance at a wide range of angles in a narrow frequency band. We analytically predict the condition of achieving such an important feature of perfect absorption for both TM and TE polarizations. Interestingly, the infrared perfect absorption can be redshifted by increasing the thickness of the hBN layers and blueshifted by increasing the graphene’s chemical potential. Such flexible control of infrared perfect absorption offers a new tool for controlling electromagnetic waves and has potential applications in photodetection and other light control applications.

Synthesis of 2D-Material(G,GO,rGO,h-BN)-Magnetic(Fe,Fe3O4)Nanocomposites

For the purpose of synthesizing 2D-Material–Magnetic nanocomposites, several new modifications of existing 2D-materials synthesis methods by exfoliation and chemical synthesis from liquid charge are developed. Using them, graphene (G), graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) matrix magnetic nanocomposites for the first time are obtained by coating or intercalation their nanoparticles with ferromagnetic iron (Fe) or ferrimagnetic iron oxide – magnetite (Fe3O4). These materials are prospective for variety of high tech applications. In particular, h-BN–Fe3O4 composite nanoparticles can serve for neutron-capturing boron isotope 10B effective delivery agents in BNCT (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) of cancer as they allow the controlling by an external magnetic field targeting to tumor tissue.

The role of epoxidation process on improving the oxidative, thermal stability, and tribological performance of mustard oil nano lubricants

This study investigated the potential of inedible mustard oil (MO) (Brassica juncea) as a suitable bio-lubricant for enhanced thermal, oxidative stability, and tribological performance. To improve the MO's oxidative stability, it was subjected to a chemical epoxidation reaction, forming epoxidized mustard oil (EMO). The MO and EMO were evaluated for viscosity, functional groups, wettability, oxidative stability, thermal stability, friction, and wear performance. The epoxidation process resulted in nearly doubling the oxidative stability, as well as improving the thermal stability of the MO. Results showed that the EMO exhibited better lubricating properties than the MO, including lower friction and wear. To further improve the lubrication performance of the EMO, solid lubricant additives (SLAs) were incorporated in various concentrations. These SLAs were graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). The GNP and hBN nano lubricants reduced friction by 31% and 13% compared to the EMO. The same nano lubricants also lowered wear by 73% and 51% relative to the EMO. The underlying mechanisms behind the improvement in the friction and wear performance were discussed. The EMO can be considered as a suitable base stock for renewable and sustainable energy applications.

The Influence of Graphene Oxide-Fe3O4 Differently Conjugated with 10-Hydroxycampthotecin and a Rotating Magnetic Field on Adenocarcinoma Cells.

Nanoparticles (e.g., graphene oxide, graphene oxide-Fe3O4 nanocomposite or hexagonal boron nitride) loaded with anti-cancer drugs and targeted at cancerous cells allowed researchers to determine the most effective in vitro conditions for anticancer treatment. For this reason, the main propose of the present study was to determine the effect of graphene oxide (GO) with iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (GO-Fe3O4) covalently (c-GO-Fe3O4-HCPT) and non-covalently (nc-GO-Fe3O4-HCPT) conjugated with hydroxycamptothecin (HCPT) in the presence of a rotating magnetic field (RMF) on relative cell viability using the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line. The obtained GO-Fe3O4 nanocomposites demonstrated the uniform coverage of the graphene flakes with the nanospheres, with the thickness of the flakes estimated as ca. 1.2 nm. The XRD pattern of GO-Fe3O4 indicates that the crystal structure of the magnetite remained stable during the functionalization with HCPT that was confirmed with FTIR spectra. After 24 h, approx. 49% and 34% of the anti-cancer drug was released from nc-GO-Fe3O4-HCPT and c-GO-Fe3O4-HCPT, respectively. The stronger bonds in the c-GO-Fe3O4-HCPT resulted in a slower release of a smaller drug amount from the nanocomposite. The combined impact of the novel nanocomposites and a rotating magnetic field on MCF-7 cells was revealed and the efficiency of this novel approach has been confirmed. However, MCF-7 cells were more significantly affected by nc-GO-Fe3O4-HCPT. In the present study, it was found that the concentration of nc-GO-Fe3O4-HCPT and a RMF has the highest statistically significant influence on MCF-7 cell viability. The obtained novel nanocomposites and rotating magnetic field were found to affect the MCF-7 cells in a dose-dependent manner. The presented results may have potential clinical applications, but still, more in-depth analyses need to be performed.

First-principles study of highly sensitive graphene/hexagonal boron nitride heterostructures for application in toxic gas-sensing devices.

Graphene-based sensors exhibit high sensitivity, fast response, and good selectivity towards toxic gases but have low mechanical stability. The combination of graphene and two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is expected to increase the mechanical stability and enhance the adsorption performance of these gas sensors. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that two-dimensional graphene/h-BN double layers can be used as good substrates for gas sensors with a small lattice mismatch of only 1.78%. Moreover, the presence of a h-BN layer widens the band gap by about 38 meV and considerably increases the work function, thus positively affecting the gas adsorption performance. Although these graphene/h-BN heterostructures do not change the physical adsorption mechanism of these sensors concerning the graphene-based materials, these bilayers significantly enhance the sensitivity of these sensors for detecting CO2, CO, NO, and NO2 toxic gases. Particularly, compared to the pristine graphene-based materials, the gas adsorption energies of graphene/h-BN increased by up to 13.78% for the adsorption of NO, and the shortest distances between the graphene/h-BN substrates and adsorbed gas molecules decreased. We also show that the graphene/h-BN heterostructure is more selective towards NOx gases while more inert towards COx gases, based on the different amounts of charge transferred from the substrate to the adsorbed gas molecules. Using the non-equilibrium Green functions in the context of density functional theory, we quantitatively associated these charge transfers with the reduction of the current passing through these scattering regions. These results demonstrate that graphene/h-BN heterostructures can be exploited as highly sensitive and selective room-temperature gas sensors for detecting toxic gases.

The building blocks behind the electrohydrodynamics of non-polar 2D-inks

This work provides a complete rheological characterization of 2D-inks in electric fields with different intensities and orientations to the imposed flow field. 2D nanomaterials used in this study are graphene nanoplatelets, hexagonal boron-nitride, and molybdenum disulfide. These materials with different electric properties are dispersed in a non-polar solvent (Toluene) with different concentrations of Ethyl Cellulose (EC), providing Newtonian or viscoelastic characteristics. Shear rheology tests show that the presence of nanoparticles barely changes the fluid behavior from the carrier fluid, and the application of an electric field perpendicular to the flow does not result in electrorheological behavior. However, extensional experiments, which mimic the actual EHD jet printing conditions, allowed the observation of the influence of both the particles and the electric field aligned on the filament thinning process. It was observed that the electric field generates vortices due to an electrophoretic effect in the carrier fluid when EC is present in the formulations, which has severe consequences on the stability of the liquid bridges, whereas it scarcely affects the shear viscosity; additionally, the kind of 2D nanoparticles modifies also the conductivity and permittivity of the solution, inducing Maxwell stresses that also make the filament more stable against surface tension.

Additive Manufacturing of Shape Memory Thermoset Composites with Directional Thermal Conductivity

AbstractShape memory epoxy vitrimers and their composites are candidate materials for multiple engineering applications due to the commercial availability of their precursors combined with their functionality, mechanical properties, and recyclability. However, the manufacturing of vitrimer composites through conventional mould‐casting limits the flexibility in the design of complex parts. In this work feedstock inks are formulated based on reduced graphene oxide and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) to 3D‐print epoxy vitrimer‐based composites by direct ink writing (DIW). The introduction of hBN platelets (up to 22 vol.%) and their alignment during printing enhances the fracture resistance of the material and induces directional thermal transport. The in‐plane thermal conductivities (3 W m−1 K−1) are nearly one order of magnitude higher than the matrix material. The high conductivity results in faster actuation times and can be combined with the printing process to build structures designed to manage heat flow.

Improved mechanical and thermal properties of polypropylene filled with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) particles

Improving thermal properties of polymer-based composites by using different types of fillers most of the time also reduces material elasticity and flexural strength, which is a significant problem for application. To address this problem, we have used two types of two-dimensional materials, such as reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) to achieve better thermal and mechanical properties. Great tensile strength and flexibility of both those 2D-materials combined with good thermal conductivity of hBN provided a synergistic effect for the resulting composites. Here we show the composites with 30% of hBN and 10% rGO by weight that have greatly improved flexural strength and flexural modulus as well as more than threefold increased thermal conductivity as compared to pristine polypropylene. Mechanical properties of composites only filled with hBN are significantly lower.

Piezoelectric properties of noncovalently functionalized 2D nanomaterials incorporated poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanocomposites

AbstractWe report here for the first time the role of noncovalently functionalized 2D nanomaterials on the ferroelectric and piezoelectric behavior of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposites. Graphene oxide (GO), expanded graphite (EG) and hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) were noncovalently modified via Li‐salt of 6‐amino hexanoic acid (Li‐AHA), denoted as m‐GO, m‐EG and m‐BN, in order to de‐agglomerate and de‐stack them, which were subsequently incorporated into the PVDF matrix via solution mixing, followed by compression molding. Simultaneously, PVDF nanocomposites with unmodified 0.08 wt% of 2D nanomaterials were also prepared using the same methodology. PVDF/m‐BN nanocomposite showed a higher extent of polar phase (~36%) associated with PVDF phase as compared to PVDF/m‐GO and PVDF/m‐EG nanocomposites. Further, the highest permittivity (~58 at 10−1 Hz) was achieved in PVDF/m‐BN nanocomposite, which was also reflected in higher remnant polarization (~61 nC/cm2) and a significantly higher d33 value (~53 pm/V). Moreover, a higher output peak to peak voltage (~13 V) was obtained for the sensor device fabricated from PVDF/m‐BN nanocomposite. Thus, the role of Li‐AHA‐modified 2D nanomaterials in improving the morphology, dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric characteristics of the PVDF nanocomposites was clearly established.

Electrically-driven ultrafast out-of-equilibrium light emission from hot electrons in suspended graphene/hBN heterostructures

Nanoscale light sources with high speed of electrical modulation and low energy consumption are key components for nanophotonics and optoelectronics. The record-high carrier mobility and ultrafast carrier dynamics of graphene make it promising as an atomically thin light emitter, which can be further integrated into arbitrary platforms by van der Waals forces. However, due to the zero bandgap, graphene is difficult to emit light through the interband recombination of carriers like conventional semiconductors. Here, we demonstrate ultrafast thermal light emitters based on suspended graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (Gr/hBN) heterostructures. Electrons in biased graphene are significantly heated up to 2800 K at modest electric fields, emitting bright photons from the near-infrared to the visible spectral range. By eliminating the heat dissipation channel of the substrate, the radiation efficiency of the suspended Gr/hBN device is about two orders of magnitude greater than that of graphene devices supported on SiO2 or hBN. We further demonstrate that hot electrons and low-energy acoustic phonons in graphene are weakly coupled to each other and are not in full thermal equilibrium. Direct cooling of high-temperature hot electrons to low-temperature acoustic phonons is enabled by the significant near-field heat transfer at the highly localized Gr/hBN interface, resulting in ultrafast thermal emission with up to 1 GHz bandwidth under electrical excitation. It is found that suspending the Gr/hBN heterostructures on the SiO2 trenches significantly modifies the light emission due to the formation of the optical cavity and showed a ∼440% enhancement in intensity at the peak wavelength of 940 nm compared to the black-body thermal radiation. The demonstration of electrically driven ultrafast light emission from suspended Gr/hBN heterostructures sheds the light on applications of graphene heterostructures in photonic integrated circuits, such as broadband light sources and ultrafast thermo-optic phase modulators.

Oriented rGO framework induced hBN confined network in PDMS for absorption enhanced EMI shielding and through-plane thermal conductivity

Herein, inspired by the highly matched phonon spectra between reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), and the good complementarity of the conductive loss of rGO and dielectric loss of hBN in dissipating microwaves, we construct an oriented rGO framework induced hBN confined network in bulk polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and through-plane thermoconductive properties. A prefabricated three-dimensional (3D) rGO aerogel with a vertically oriented porous structure serving as an electrically conductive framework provides EMI shielding properties, and hBN distributed in the oriented rGO pores constructs a confined through-plane thermoconductive network. The introduction of hBN induces absorption-enhanced EMI shielding through dielectric loss, and the highly matched phonon spectra of rGO and hBN provide more abundant thermal conduction paths and enhance the thermal conductivity of the rGO/hBN/PDMS composites. The synergy of this rGO-hBN dual-network structure gives the composites an excellent EMI shielding effectiveness of 43.1 dB and a good through-plane thermal conductivity of 1.2 W m−1 K−1 at a thickness of 4 mm. This work provides a feasible strategy for realizing shielding and thermoconductive composites with potential applications in next-generation flexible packaging materials.

Ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and thermoelectric performance of twisted Graphene/Boron Nitride heterostructure through strain engineering

We designed and investigated the electronic, mechanical, and thermoelectric properties of Graphene/hexagonal Boron Nitride (Gr/h-BN) heterostructure at various twisting angles based on the Ab-initio simulation. The structural stability was studied at optimized rotation angles (ϕ) = 0∘, 16.10∘, 21.79∘, 38.21∘, 43.90∘ and 60∘. The heterostructure shows semiconducting nature at ϕ=0∘, 21.79∘ and 38.21∘. These twisted heterostructures have demonstrated extraordinary mechanical properties such as Young’s modulus and bulk modulus. Using the semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory, it is observed that the Seebeck coefficient, electric conductivity, and power factor at ϕ=0∘, 21.79∘, 38.21∘, and 60∘ are much higher than the values measured at ϕ=16.10∘ and 43.90∘. Moreover, at ϕ=60∘, the Power Factor for the n-type dopants can reach 1.37 × 1011 W/msK2. The lattice thermal conductivity at room temperature is found to be very low for ϕ=16.10∘, 21.79∘, 43.90∘ and 38.21∘ rotation angles. An ultralow lattice thermal conductivity with a value of 0.095 W/mK at 300K has been observed for 21.79∘ rotation angle, which is lower than other rotation angles because of very low group velocity (22.1 km/s) and short phonon lifetime (∼0.12 ps). The high thermoelectric performance results from an ultralow thermal conductivity arising due to the strong lattice anharmonicity. The present observations can offer significant impact on the design of high performance thermoelectric materials based on twisted van der Waals heterostructure (vdWH).

Physical and mechanical properties of graphene and h‐Boron nitride reinforced hybrid aerospace grade epoxy nanocomposites

AbstractVarying graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) and hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) based fillers were integrated to an aerospace grade epoxy resin typically used as matrix to obtain or repair structural parts of aerospace platforms. The three‐roll milling approach was used for this purpose. Five cycles were performed for the mixing while the gap between rollers was 50 μm. Microstructure and thermal properties of the nanocomposites were studied. Moreover, mechanical and transport (electrical as well as thermal) performances were investigated. Results show that certain fillers yield multifunctional properties, that is, enhanced flexural strength by up to 69% in combination with high electrical conductivities with orders of magnitude of approximately and improved thermal conductivities up to 9.3%. For instance, the hybrid nanocomposite sample produced with 0.5 wt% GNP and 0.5 wt% h‐BN added to the epoxy matrix exhibits an electrical conductivity which increased fold, a flexural strength increased by 69% and thermal conductivity increased by 7% in comparison the neat epoxy. Hence, in this study it was demonstrated that these properties can be engineered and tuned effectively for aerospace applications like lightweight avionic chassis which have specific requirements like thermal and electric conductivity which naturally leads to the possible usage of GNP and h‐BN in an epoxy. Correspondingly, presented results are of relevance for novel thermal interface materials with tailored electrical properties.
