According to Islam, the Gospel is the name of the revelation of Allah Almighty which revealed on Jesus Christ (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), as stated in the Qur'an: و اتینه الانجیل We have given him the gospel. But to Christians, the gospel refers to the biography of Jesus as it is evident from the study of currently available Gospels.According to the Bible – Acts of the Apostels, Barnabas is one among the first three personalities who dedicated their lives to Christianity. There was a Gospel attributed to Barnabas, which was of great importance in the early days of Christianity. However, at a conference in Nicaea in 325 later, it was decided that all the Gospels in Hebrew were to be destroyed, the Gospel of Barnabas would be destroyed. The orders were issued but somehow it remained till the present time.The contents of this Gospel are closer to the Islamic teachings than the other available Gospels, so Muslim scholars liked it and disliked it by Christian scholars.

The Date and Provenance of the Gospel of Barnabas

The so-called Gospel of Barnabas is a curious writing whose historical background remains obscure. The writing is attested in two manuscripts, an Italian one from the sixteenth and a Spanish one from the eighteenth century. Despite recent claims to the contrary, the Italian text can be shown to be the original, from which the Spanish was translated. The date of the Italian text is probably rather earlier than that of the manuscript: strong arguments point to an origin in the fourteenth century. Although it incorporates large amounts of extraneous material, the Gospel of Barnabas does follow the basic narrative thread of the canonical gospels, telling the story of Jesus of Nazareth from his birth to the crucifixion. One of the sources used by the author appears to have been an Italian Diatessaron closely related to the Venetian and Tuscan harmonies edited by Todesco, Vaccari, and Vatasso in 1938, as is shown by a number of unique shared readings.

The main issues on which a Christian-Muslim polemic focuses are: the status of the Bible and the figure of Jesus. The main sources to be used by Protestants in their polemic with Muslim clearly are the Bible and the Koran. Book and electronic publications require examination of several subjects: 1) The authenticity of the Bible (i.e. the Torah and Gospel), 2) The divinity of Jesus- the Savior, 3) Islam and Christianity, 4) The status of the Koran, 5) The so-called “false testimony”, e.g. Gospel of Barnabas, the issue of Paraclete. It should be remembered that in most cases a rather radical attitude of some Protestant studies is connected with the impossibility of having a real dialogue between the two religions based on the mutual exegesis of letters and dogmas and the text hermeneutics – the Bible is analyzed by Muslim theologians with regards to its contents to the Koran, and the Koran may not be subject to the classic text criticism applied by bibliologists with reference to the Hebrew Bible or to the New Testament books. Presenting someone with the Koran constitutes a call to accept Islam, whereas presenting someone with the Bible is regarded as an act of Christian missionary activity, naturally rejected by Muslims. Religious pluralism, which constitutes a base for a dialogue between religions, is unknown to numerous Muslim clergymen. As Bassam Tibi put it, “both parties of the dialogue have to acquire unprejudiced theological and historical knowledge”.

The lead books of the Sacromonte constitute a bold example of intellectual resistance and an attempt to influence Christian thought made by the Morisco community of Granada. Bearing in mind both the pseudoprophetical discoveries in 16th Century Spain and the Islamic view about the history of religions, these texts, although Islamic, could be seen as acceptable both for Christians and Muslims, especially taking into account the Spanish translations of the Arabic texts. This attempt would end with the Truth of the Gospel, identified here with the Gospel of Barnabas. This text, with many similarities to the lead books of Granada, presents an account of the life and preaching of Jesus from the Islamic point of view, i.e. before Christian distortions of the events.

Long the subject of dispute among both scholars and apologists, the Gospel of Barnabas has been the focus of intense interest since it was translated into English by Lonsdale and Laura Ragg in 1907. After surveying the various stances assumed by scholars regarding the text's origins and authorship, this article suggests a fresh perspective, presenting strong internal evidence that the author was a Carmelite monk of Cyprus who converted from Christianity to Islam. This suggestion is consistent both with the history of the text itself and with the history of the Carmelites in the 'Latin East'; avoiding some of the extravagances of earlier theories, it provides a new point of departure for further research.
