The Research on Strategies of Cultivating Senior High School English Autonomous Reading Ability from the Perspective of Key Competence

In the context of core literacy teaching, high school is a critical period for students’ learning and development. While teaching students English knowledge, English teachers in high schools should pay more attention to the cultivation of their autonomous learning ability. English reading is an important part of English teaching in senior high school, and English teachers need to cultivate students’ good autonomous reading ability in teaching. Therefore, to effectively develop and improve students’ autonomous reading ability and encourage them to form a good reading habit in the process of learning, English teachers in senior high schools should change their traditional educational ideas in time, and constantly seek more scientific, reasonable, and interesting teaching methods in the process of teaching, to stimulate students’ reading interest, improve their English reading ability and effectively improve their English comprehensive literacy ability. Based on this purpose, this paper briefly analyzes the effective ways to cultivate English autonomous reading ability in senior high schools in literacy idea.

A Survey Of Reading Habits Of Pre-Service English Teachers In The School Of Teacher Training And Education

This study explores the reading habits of pre-service English teachers enrolled in a School of Teacher Training and Education. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research aims to identify the frequency, preferences, and motivations behind the reading activities of these future educators. Data was collected through questionnaires distributed to 54 respondents and semi-structured interviews, providing both quantitative and qualitative insights. The findings indicate The questionnaires were distributed to 54 pre-service English teachers. The statistical analysis of the data indicates that even if the majority of students have read English since they were young, they may not necessarily have good reading habits in English, specifically. It appears that just a tiny portion of them have consistent reading habits in English based on their eagerness to regularly spend time reading various types of English texts. The study also shows that most of students prefer reading fiction texts instead of academic texts which reveals the imbalanced approach toward their reading habits. Factors influencing these habits include academic demands, personal interests, and the increasing accessibility of digital content. The study underscores the importance of fostering robust reading habits among pre-service teachers to enhance their professional development and effectiveness in the classroom. The implications of these findings suggest the need for targeted interventions and support mechanisms within teacher training programs to promote a balanced and enriching reading culture.

English Language Teaching and Learning in Secondary Schools in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State: Problems and Prospects

This paper studied the problems of teaching and learning English as a second language in junior school certificate examination in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State. The study sought to establish the extent to which students in Junior Secondary School and teachers should value English as the language of instruction. The framework adopted is the behaviorist theory of bilingualism. The simple percentage method of data analysis was employed to analyze data. The population comprised students in junior secondary schools in Ozoro precisely the students of Opute Grammar School, Ozoro and Heroes Group of Schools, Ozoro both in Delta State of Nigeria. The sample size was 100, and the instrument for data collection was the questionnaire which was tested and retested on some other students to ensure that it was reliable. It was found out that the majority of the students consider the English language a difficult subject because of their inability to understand every aspect, which the English language entails. It was also found out among others that the level of infiltration of mother tongue into the respondents’ English is very high. This research recommended that good reading habits should be developed in the students and also well-equipped libraries should be provided in the schools and communities in order to improve better performance in their study of English language. It concluded that the problems of teaching and learning English as a second language is as a result of the impact of mother’s tongue, inadequate textbooks, poor language background and lack of professional growth and development of teachers. If these discovered factors are not checked there will be a drastic decline in standard of education.

Enhancing English Reading Proficiency through Student Reading Habits

This research aims to obtain students' reading habits to strengthen their English reading skills. This research uses a desciptive qualitative approach. This research examines phenomena related to students' reading habits in strengthening and improving English reading skills. The sample was 100 fifth-semester students of the English Reading Class. The sampling technique uses purposive sampling. The data collection process uses three types of data: 1) observations obtained to observe students' reading habits during learning activities and 2) questionnaires given to students to find out their habits outside the classroom according to their point of view and the situations they experience. The data analysis technique uses three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of this research conclude that students have good reading habits in the campus environment and read a lot of books to complete their coursework. Meanwhile, reading activity at home is very low and parental support in building reading habits is also non-existent because reading activities together are not carried out at home. The results of this research also have implications for teachers' understanding of how to motivate students to have high reading habits outside the classroom and also provide authentic teaching materials so that reading activities can be done more outside the classroom.

Unravelling the relationship between English reading habits and individual, family and school factors: A Chinese perspective

AbstractIn English teaching, developing students' reading habits has been emphasized for its critical role in promoting overall core competencies. However, in practice, many teachers and parents are not informed of the effective approaches to developing good English reading habits, hindering the overall development of students' core competencies. In light of this, an empirical study was carried out to explore the developmental features of students' English reading habits and individual, family and school factors that affect its development. A questionnaire was adopted to collect quantitative data. A total of 2,130 primary and secondary school students from China participated in the study. The results indicated that their English reading habits varied with age and gender. In terms of age, secondary school students, especially middle school students, performed better than primary school students. In terms of gender, females performed better in reading frequency, reading time and ways of reading, while males had a larger reading volume. Reading habits were found to be impacted by individual, school and family factors. Among them, age had the strongest influence on the development of English reading habits. These findings shed light on effective ways to develop English reading habits, especially in foreign‐language‐learning contexts.

Nurturing Reading Logs to Foster Students’ Reading Habits

Reading habit influences language proficiency. Teachers have used Extensive Reading (ER) as a strategy to enhance students’ reading habits. The present study investigated how reading logs influenced the reading habits of 28 EFL learners in Reading courses using a qualitative research approach. Data were collected using observations, classroom discussions, and students’ reading logs. Study participants were students enrolled in an Extensive Reading class who had undertaken an Intensive Reading class in the preceding semester as a prerequisite subject. Reading logs improved rates of reading. Nurturing reading logs helped students enhance their reading habits based on word count, number of books/articles read, and their reflections on their reading attitudes. Lecturers should promote a reading atmosphere in which students are encouraged to read for pleasure. All EFL learners should have access to more reader books and an ongoing schedule of extensive reading to foster good reading habits.

Design of English viewing, listening, and speaking mobile teaching software based on an interactive digital media algorithm

China has now embraced the information era, which has had a significant impact on everyday life, employment, and educational practices. Information technology has also had a significant impact on the growth of the education sector, resulting in a fast-paced and resource-rich setting for student interaction. Through the network platform, various interactive software can improve students’ learning methods, especially language teaching software. English audio-visual speaking is software for training English language listening and speaking, which can carry out relevant oral activities and topic discussions according to the imported materials. As a result, you can assist pupils in using the vocabulary and knowledge associated with the subject, which will increase their interest in learning. English teachers can fully prepare for speaking and listening tasks in the classroom by using audio-visual speaking. At the same time, through the learning of TV and movie trailers, English audio-visual speaking can provide readers with background knowledge, which is ready for readers to fully understand the language and content in the video materials. Based on information technology, this paper constructs English audio-visual and oral mobile teaching software, which depends on interactive digital media algorithms. Through the mobile teaching software for English audio-visual speaking, students can form good English listening and reading habits, which will provide important help for English language learning.First, this essay examines the value and benefits of mobile applications for providing English instruction orally and visually, which might help to illustrate the need for software development. The research then suggests various algorithms for English that are related to audio, visual, and oral input that can detect, assess, and correct students’ learning mistakes. Finally, this work develops the fundamental methodology of the audio-visual and verbal mobile software for instruction in English.

Effects of Political and Socio-economic Dynamics on Library Development and Utilization in Nigeria

This paper presents qualitative analyses of case study discussions on the importance of libraries and the effect of political and social-economic dynamics on libraries in Nigeria with particular reference to public, national and academic libraries. It traces historical antecedents of selected libraries with a view of buttressing the point of libraries’ relevance from the ancient times to the modern information society.The article adopted an exploratory research design. Secondary data were obtained using a desk review of existing literature on state of Nigerian public, national and academic libraries. Theoretical framework based on library social responsibility and the role of government in the provision of library and information needs of the people is employed and discussed. They include planning process and critical discourse and informational justice (as part of social justice). Challenges facing libraries in Nigeria are identified to include adverse policies, paucity of funds and general government apathy to library development. As a panacea to the identified challenges confronting most Nigerian libraries, the paper recommends that librarians should continue to play their advocacy roles for their libraries, by continual soliciting for increased percentage of funds through budgetary allocation of both the federal and state governments.Also, good reading habit should be inculcated among pupils and students in order to increase the number of library patronage which would in turn encourage support for library development by the stakeholders.

LACK OF READING HABITS AND VOCABULARY AMONG FRESHMEN AFFECTS ACADEMIC PERFOMANCE

The main idea to publish this article is to recognize the importance of a lack of reading habits and vocabulary; as an essential aspect to having good communication, especially when people start to learn a new language, in this case, English as a second language. Herewith there are some of the reasons that lack of reading habits and vocabulary are affecting the student's academic perfomance. Thus, vocabulary learning verifies to play an important role in oral communication. Reading proficiency is the key to knowledge. In modern life, reading depends on the individual's capacity to interpret printed or electronic pages fully and accurately. The overall objective of this research was to examine how the lack of reading habits and vocabulary is affecting academic performance. The justification for this article is based on the identification of these main problems freshmen are facing, and how there issues are affecting the academic performance of students at the university level. Is importan to recognize the importance of the parents in the acquisition of good reading habits. And of course at the school level form part of the teachers, to promote good reading habits in order for students will not have difficulties in their academic performance.

Hubungan Kebiasaan Membaca dengan Kemampuan Membaca Pemahaman Siswa Sekolah Dasar

Reading comprehension is a important ability in the learning process of students in elementary school. With good reading comprehension skills, students can easily receive information and knowledge from learning in various fields. To improve reading comprehension skills can be by improving reading habits. Reading habits are reading activities that are carried out continuously and routinely. Good reading habits can increase vocabulary, the ability to understand the meaning of words and sentences, and the ability to understand sentence structure. So that reading habits become one of the important variables to improve students' reading comprehension skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between reading habits and students' reading comprehension skills in elementary school. This research was conducted on fourth grade students of SD Negeri 171Pekanbaru. By using a quantitative approach and correlation method to measure the relationship between reading habits and reading comprehension skills. Data collection was done by taking multiple choice tests for reading comprehension ability and questionnaire statements for reading habits. Based on this study, the results show that there is a significant relationship between reading habits and reading comprehension skills with a sufficient category. The conclusion of this study is that reading habits have an important meaning to improve students' reading comprehension skills but there are also other variables that can affect students' reading skills.

Fostering the Love of Reading: Dynamics and Sustainability of Book Clubs in Indonesian Universities

The research aimed to reveal the dynamics of the book clubs that the researchers started with and for Indonesian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students at the university level, as well as the club's impacts on students' learning. Book clubs were essential in nurturing students' reading habits as a community. Studies found that book club activities affected one’s engagement in reading by giving readers the voice, room to participate actively, social support, and the choice to decide what they read. Indonesian university students in the EFL context faced reading engagement issues; the researchers initiated book clubs with the unified mission of growing students' love of reading and forming good reading habits. The research reported a qualitative study of a group of Indonesia Extensive Reading Association (IERA) members sharing reflections on establishing and managing book clubs or literature circles in six universities in Indonesia where the researchers taught. The data of participants' reflections were gathered and analyzed iteratively to find common themes or patterns. As a result, the research finds that the book club activities have fostered the love of reading and inferred the empowerment of collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. The research also reveals that in setting up a book club at the university level, the support of the university and the readers' community and extended networks are needed. For a book club to sustain itself, four aspects must be considered: participants' involvement, product-oriented activities, voluntarism of participants, and rewards.

A Closer Look on Student-Teachers’ Attitudes, Habits, and Their Comprehension Achievement toward Reading of Tertiary Level

This study was aimed to find out (a) the existing phenomena of students’ reading attitudes, habit, and comprehension achievement, (b) whether or not there was significant correlation among the students’ reading attitudes, reading habits and their reading comprehension achievement, (c) whether or not there was contribution of students’ reading attitudes, reading habit and their reading comprehension achievement, (d) which variable gives the most contribution to the students’ reading comprehension achievement. The data were collected by distributing reading attitude and reading habit questionnaire and testing a reading comprehension for 313 students. The data were analyzed by Percentage analysis, Pearson Product Moment and Regression. The result showed that 1.6% students had very positive reading attitude, 95.9% students had positive reading attitude, 2.5% students had negative reading attitude. In reading habit, 23.1% students had very good reading habit, 72.3% students had good reading habit, and 4.6% students had average reading habit. There was a significant correlation between students’ reading attitude to their reading habit (.365 with sig .000). Significant correlation between either students’ reading attitude or reading habit and their reading comprehension achievement was not found. Based on their semester level, only the eighth semester students’ reading attitudes insignificantly correlate to their reading habits (.134 with sig .233). Meanwhile, only the fourth semester students’ reading attitudes correlate to their reading comprehension achievement (.290 with sig .011). In general, students’ reading attitudes contributed 13.3% to their reading habit. Finally 8.6% of the fourth semester students’ reading comprehension achievement was influenced by the combination of reading attitudes and reading habits.

Effective Strategies for Developing Reading Habits in Elementary School Students

The importance of reading for the growth of a person's life is self-evident. In order for children to hold books and fall in love with reading, the formation of good reading habits is essential, and primary school is particularly important for the formation of a person's habits. Starting from the importance of cultivating primary school students' reading habits, this article discusses effective strategies for cultivating primary school students' reading habits from the aspects of creating a good reading environment, stimulating primary school students' interest in reading, and guiding primary school students to form correct reading habits.

Reading Attitudes of Fourth Year English as a Foreign Language Students

The present exploratory study sought to identify the attitudes towards reading for pleasure of a group of fourth year English as a Foreign Language (EFL) majors after taking mandatory literature courses. A total of 45 students from the School of Modern Languages at a public university in San José, Costa Rica participated in this investigation. In order to elicit the participants’ attitudes and motivations both before and after entering the university, an online survey was administered. The results of the survey showed that after entering the university almost half of the participants kept good reading habits, apart from the mandatory readings. Main findings also reveal that the main pre-university reading motivators suffered a change after entering the university. Although personal enjoyment and relaxation were maintained, motivators related to the general improvement of language skills obtained a higher relevance for the students. The survey answers also suggested the literary works read in class play an important role in the students’ voluntary reading practices. Practical implications are discussed.

A Discussion on the Improvement Strategies of English Reading Teaching in Senior High School

In English teaching, reading comprehension is a very important part, accounting for a large proportion of the entire English teaching. National English curriculum standard for general high school provides detailed explanations on the specific content requirements and teaching of discourse and pragmatics, and requires the cultivation of students' language skills, learning abilities, thinking qualities, and cultural qualities in the teaching of reading. The teaching of English reading in middle schools has always been highly valued, which takes up too much time and energy of teachers and students. However, the teaching efficiency is not high, and students' reading comprehension ability is low. Therefore, teachers must adopt scientific and effective reading teaching strategies, teach students to learn reading methods, cultivate good reading habits, cultivate efficient reading skills, and improve their reading proficiency.

Internal and External Factors Affecting Reading Performance in English and Filipino

Reading is very important to a pupil. The love of reading may only develop when the child has reading motivation and good reading habits. Family support and the home environment, too are great help in the childs reading development. Hence, this research study aimed to determine the level of the reading factors in reading in terms of reading motivation and reading habit, family support, and home environment among Grade V pupils to identify the level of the respondents reading performance as to PHIL-IRI result in the First Grading Period, the significant difference between internal factors affecting reading performance and the relationship of the external factors affecting reading performance among Grade V pupils. It was conducted among the Grade 5 respondents ( n=321) of the five schools in South District. This study used a research-made questionnaire which was tested with a Cronbach result of 0.785. The study used the statistical treatment on the frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, and T-test. Findings show that the overall Level of Reading on Internal Factors was high level, and the External Factors resulted in a Very high level while the PHIL-IRI reading performance is on the Instructional level. Both the internal and external reading factors affect pupils reading performance, thus rejecting the null hypothesis. It is recommended, the reading must be further enhanced both at home and in school for mastery and familiarization with reading materials to help the child develop the love of reading in English and Filipino.

Urgency of E-Books Based Multimodal Approach Towards Reading Motivation for Elementary School Students

Reading motivation is an important predictor of reading achievement in elementary school. Electronic book or digital book is one of the media that students can always access by technological assistance. This study aims to determine the urgency and potential of developing a teaching material product in the form of E-Book based multimodal approach on reading motivation for elementary school students. This research is included in the mixed method approach using explanatory sequential design. The research subjects consisted of teachers and 79 students in fifth grade. The data collected in this study are qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data was collected using observation techniques, and interviews whose instruments were observation sheets and interview guidelines. Quantitative data was collected using non-test techniques, namely questionnaires and followed by questionnaires as instruments. Furthermore, the research data will be analyzed descriptively with interactive analysis through data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that during the implementation of learning, teachers only used teaching materials in the form of printed books that causes students to be lazy to read and student responses stated that they needed interesting ICT-based teaching materials to increase engagement, reading habit and motivation to read which in this case as many as 94% of students agreed if there was development in interactive teaching materials in e-book format for language learning.Therefore, this study concluded that to encourage good reading habits among students, schools especially teachers should provide access to learning using ebooks and sufficient facilities to accommodate all students. Implication of this study can be a reference for teachers to develop similar electronic media. Librarians should intensify their efforts to create more reading awareness among students.

Exploring the Role of English Language Teachers in Developing Reading Habits among Secondary School Students through Libraries

Reading culture enables people to learn, grow, strive for personal betterment, and pursue innovative goals. The school library has a significant impact on its users' love of reading and serves as a source of inspiration. This study sought to understand how the secondary school section's pupils could develop a reading culture through the use of the school library. The goals were to research how secondary school students use the school library to establish their reading habits and how English language teachers can help students develop their reading habits. The network diagram of the variables' conceptual framework served as the study's compass. The research used a descriptive survey methodology. Conveniently, a school was chosen. In addition, 25 English teachers from the school were identified in order to collect information about how they help pupils develop good reading habits. A total of 80 students from secondary schools were employed in the sample, including 80 students chosen using purposive sampling in the Secondary Section. Both open-ended and closed-ended questionnaires were used to obtain the data. It was determined that students used the library to do their projects, do research, and take notes, but they also visited the library at a distinct time slot once a week when they could read and write reviews. English language teachers had a variety of responsibilities, such as encouraging pupils to read; proposing books to librarians from various genres, and helping students create in-class libraries. The conclusion is that because of their exam-focused curriculum, kids don't have enough time for leisure reading. As a result, schools should add more library time to their class schedules to encourage students to develop a reading habit.

Research on Strategies of Improving Mathematics Reading Ability in Secondary Vocational School

Reading is the premise of learning. In the information age, the cultivation of secondary vocational school students' mathematics reading ability is an important way to cultivate students' comprehensive learning ability and improve the core quality of mathematics. Therefore, more and more teachers attach importance to the cultivation of students' mathematics reading habits and the improvement of reading ability, so as to promote students' mathematical language expression ability, arouse students' thinking about mathematical problems, and promote students' mathematical language transformation ability. This paper discusses the relationship between middle school students' reading habits and mathematics achievement, and gives some suggestions on how to cultivate secondary vocational school students' good reading habits and improve their mathematics reading level.

The Application of Formative Assessment in High School English Reading Teaching

Teaching evaluation is a very important part of high school English teaching. Curriculum assessment has an important impact on students' learning effectiveness and achievement. The current research on English reading teaching dominated by summative assessment only focuses on the strategic research on how to promote the improvement of English reading ability in schools, which makes it difficult for students to form good reading habits. Compared with summative assessment, formative assessment can enable high school students to participate more fully in the classroom, and to a certain extent, effectively improve high school students' interest and mastery of English reading, so as to improve high school students' English reading ability. Using formative assessment in the English reading classroom can better help students learn English reading and achieve better classroom results.
