Strategi Penyediaan Fasilitas Ruang Publik Inklusif di Kota Lama Semarang Berdasarkan Persepsi dan Preferensi Lansia

A good public space must be friendly and accommodating to everyone, including the elderly. Elderly is a group that has limitations when they are in public spaces because of their different needs. To find out the needs of the elderly in public spaces, it is necessary to understand their perceptions and preferences for the facilities provided so that the elderly do not need to adapt. The purpose of this study is to determine the perceptions and preferences of the elderly in the provision of inclusive public spaces in Kota Lama Semarang. Analysis of the perceptions and preferences of the elderly was carried out on three aspects, namely accessibility, comfort and safety. Data collection was carried out through filling out questionnaires by 60 elderly in Kota Lama Semarang area. This study uses Likert scale as measuring tool for the perceptions and preferences of the elderly. The conclusion from the three aspects studied, the perception of the elderly in the condition of public space facilities shows that there are advantages and disadvantages. While the preferences of the elderly in the provision of public space facilities show that the elderly agree if procurement, additions, or improvements to facilities related to the three aspects studied. The strategy for providing inclusive public space facilities can follow the standards or best practices in other cities or countries, but does not leave the classic nuance which is the identity of the Kota Lama Semarang.

ASSESSMENT OF PUBLIC SPACE QUALITY OF DISTRICT CENTERS IN DELHI USING GOOD PUBLIC SPACE INDEX

Public Spaces are a representative image of a city and play a vital role in maintaining social quotient of its people. Social interactions are a part of human nature for healthy and happy lifestyle. These interactions can happen with anybody and everybody varying from person to person. District centers are a typology of public spaces conceived in a master plan as part of mandatory commercial quotient in a neighborhood. In Delhi, these district centers are fundamental for public gatherings as they possess active and passive commercial spaces, retail, offices, food outlets and much more. This research paper aims to examine the qualitative aspects of these district centers with respect to good public space index (GPSI) given by researcher Vikas Mehta via primary surveys and public interaction. The study is a part of bigger research problem of evaluating publicness of Indian public spaces. It covers key attributes of a public space and people’s perception of it, followed by recommendations to enhance the value of urban public spaces.

PLACE MAKING OF PUBLIC SPACES WITHIN TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT (TOD): A REVIEW

Transit-oriented development (TOD) offers as a method to provide sustainable living and introducing place making as the essential needs of producing good public spaces. TOD may also help to achieve a greater positive outcome that satisfies the community’s demand. This study synthesized literature reviews from 1993 to 2021 on the ‘sense of place’ in creating a quality place making in public spaces. Views taken includes from the concern of methodological and components used to comprehend the association of sense of place within place making in public spaces accompanied by the individual’s perception of the place meaning. In conclusion, place making is essential in forming quality public spaces especially in TOD. It enables us to understand the place attachment as in the connection between a person and a place physically and spiritually thus, help to contribute to an effective place making.

Compendium of Dimensions for Evaluating Publicness of Public Spaces

A classic case of privatization of use and not of ownership, privatized public space is a newly defined dimension that falls in the range far from purely private or purely public. These newly found dimensions need a measuring tool to describe the publicity of that space before designating the usage. This research paper has been extracted from the larger study on privatized public spaces addressing the questions on defining characteristics of good public space, and some measurable parameters to evaluate these public spaces. The paper focuses on creating a compendium of parameters from the already defined literature on public spaces, publicness and publicity, which can be used to explore publicness of such spaces and their associated dynamics. These parameters are sought to thread the dimensions that will further help in determining a measurable set of variables to analyze the public spaces empirically and analytically. A discussion on various models developed by authors till date has been made a part to this paper. The scenarios have transformed in 21^st century with the advent of digital socialization and urbanization of spaces. Urban public spaces in India represent a clear contradiction of consistency and change. The paper concludes with a set of parameters extracted from the study and appropriated for the changing public spaces in India.

Peranan Ruang Terbuka Hijau Sebagai Ruang Publik di Alun-Alun Kota Surabaya

This study aims to determine the optimization of the function of green open space as a public space in Surabaya Square. In this case, the researcher uses several concepts such as optimization, public space and green open space. By using qualitative research methods, it means that qualitative research provides space for a research process that is closer to the object of research, where researchers reveal and understand unknown social phenomena by constructing a holistic and complex picture. And from this research, the results show that in optimizing green space as a public space in Surabaya Square it is still not said to be optimal, because in the standard criteria of a good public space there are still several aspects that need to be addressed and the need to add some public facilities.

Characteristic Factors Influencing the Thai-Style Public Space Utilization: Case Study of Sanam Na Mueang Public Park in Nakhon Si Thammarat Old Town, Thailand

This research aims to identify the characteristic factors influencing the Thai-style public space utilization with the combination of variables of good public space characteristics following the occidental and Thai theories from the perspective of actual users in order to create new components or factors influencing the Thai-style public space utilization. Sanam Na Mueang Public Park, located in Nakhon Si Thammarat Old Town, was specified as the study area. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to classify 30 variables influencing the success of public space utilization; data was collected from questionnaire responses provided by 320 people. The results indicate that the new characteristic factors influencing Thai-style public space utilization consist of contextual connection and space identity, landscape elements, and aesthetics of public space utilization. These results reflect that both contextual connection and space identity, and landscape elements are consistent with occidental theories that prioritize physical characteristics and promote the access and facilitation, while the aesthetics of public space utilization, in contrast to occidental theories, prioritize the aesthetics of utilization and visibility to the surrounding people and activities.

Public Space Accessibility in Vulnerable Areas in Post-Covid Times.

Public space has become a relevant factor for cities since it increases people's quality of life. These areas help reduce physical and mental problems that may arise in society, and in addition, they increase the sense of community and improve the development that children may have. The Covid-19 virus and confinement made this type of space necessary. Although public spaces are taken more into account in the city, they do not take place on the edges of the urban area, as is the case in the community of Paso del Norte in the city of Chihuahua in Mexico. The community has two spaces that can be considered recreation areas, but the reality is that they do not have adequate infrastructure to make them safe and formal places. These make us wonder what the people of this community do in their free time, how they use these public spaces, and how they have evolved over the years. So people in the community were surveyed to solve such unknowns, revealing that these spaces have changed in the last two decades. Especially with the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic. These green areas added value to the areas where they are, plus many adapted the spaces for recreational, educational, commercial, and productive use. Design is a great tool that can take the detected weaknesses of a community and turn them into strengths to create a good quality public space.

Material and digital dimensions of urban public spaces through the lens of social distancing

The role of public spaces in the city has been traditionally linked to their material dimensions. But experience of public spaces has been also increasingly digital in recent decades, with spatialities of urban dwellers being mediated by smart technology. The relation between material and digital dimensions of public space has been changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The social distancing measures severely limited the accessibility and openness of public spaces. Digital technologies can serve as a substitute for the lost possibilities of physical contact. In this study we aim at exploring this possibility and its impacts. We are also interested in using this opportunity to ask questions about the role of space and place, either material, digitally augmented or virtual in the lives of urban dwellers. Our in-depth interviews exposed a situation where it is the lack of access to material public space that is greatly contributing to the creation of social deficits identified in our interview - sensual flattening, otherless world, spatially not-rooted communication, being out of role. These deficits can serve as indicators of the role of the material dimension of public space in social interactions and as a guide to the creation of good quality public spaces.

FENOMENA KONVERGENSI: POLA SPASIAL PADA PEMBAURAN AKTOR DI KAWASAN TEBUIRENG, JOMBANG

In the development of civilization, humans have become the core in urban spaces. Therefore, human encounters in urban space becomes inevitable. Simultaneously, inclusiveness has been and is still a parameter for the accomplishment of a good public spaces. This study aims to understand the spatial pattern of human encounters in urban spaces. Tebuireng’s Pesantren area and Gus Dur Tomb were then chosen as a case study due to their intense use by more than 1 million people which are divided into 3 main actors, namely santri, pilgrims and local residents. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach, by conducting literature studies, field observations, interviews, documentation, mapping and drawing. The author finds collision or convergence phenomenon in the mixing of actors in the observed area. There are two major types of convergence that occur in the 6 major collision zones, namely single directional convergence and multi directional convergence. The convergence mechanism of each zone is then analyzed according to its type. The study found that convergence phenomenon produces swelling space as an area that holds mass overflow after the collision occurs.

Congested metro materialities: how platform escalators afford “friction” in the Copenhagen Metro

ABSTRACT This paper will unfold affordances of the material setting in the Copenhagen Metro and its role for passenger movements and “capacity issues”, zooming in on the role of platform escalators at the underground station of Nørreport. The analysis will focus particularly on “congestions” as causing friction for the vision of the Copenhagen Metro as a “travelator of continuous movement”. However, friction can be understood as equally an impeder and enabler of movement, and although the platform escalators are not innocent, they are also not determining congestions to happen on the platform in a top-down manner. Such situations are equally staged bottom-up by passengers’ embodied practices and their motivations, metro “literacy” and ways of managing the presence of others in the metro. However, the movement possibilities afforded by the material setting can be hard to negotiate for passengers with lesser able bodies or lesser metro literacy. Through empirical examples, the paper contributes with nuanced understandings of “capacity issues”: rather than a pure quantitative mismatch between the amount of platform sqm’s and the number of passengers, capacity issues reflect the multiple affordances of the material setting and how these are negotiated through the agency of human actors in mobile situations. Connecting these insights to design, this paper suggests a dual approach to “solving” capacity issues that simultaneously makes the Metro increasingly well-functioning by reducing the movement impeding friction from the physical setting, while allowing the friction of passengers’ embodied practices as a good accessible and inclusive public space.

Architecture with childhood. Rethinking and reflecting on public spaces seen through the 8-80 lens

Bringing children closer to the issues of culture and civic education in architecture and critical thinking is essential because only by knowing and enhancing their respective heritages is it possible to appreciate the present and build the future of cities with them and for them, where a city is a place of construction of collective knowledge that encompasses the challenges of sustainability and the objectives of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations. From SUJ (Jesuit University System) we have a strong commitment to the protection and care of minors and vulnerable people. In recent years, a great effort has been made to move from a culture of protection and care to ensure access to culture to safe environments. The concept of Friendly Cities 8-80is taken up again, based on the premise: If we design the city for an 8-year-old and an 80-year-old, we will have a city that allows coexistence and harmony in a way that fosters equity, stimulates healthy lifestyles, and promotes sustainability for more diverse users. Good public space design including beauty, sustainability, and accessibility are keywords of the new Bauhaus, capable of astonishing, reflecting culture and the values of a community, influencing, or “forcing” people to engage with their daily environment to address the new global challenges of climate change, pollution, and resource scarcity.

PENILAIAN TERHADAP KUALITAS RUANG PUBLIK PADA KAWASAN GEDUNG KESENIAN DR IR. SOEKARNO DI PERKOTAAN NEGARA, JEMBRANA

The availability of public space is a must for a city. Public space serves as a place for people to meet, gather and interact, whether for religious purposes, trade or building government. This study aims to assess the quality of public space in the area of ​​the Gedung Kesenian Dr. Ir. Soekarno, Jembrana Regency. This research uses the approach of Carr's (1992) public space theory about aspects of forming the quality of public space which consists of 3 aspects, namely aspects of needs, aspects of rights, and aspects of meaning. The quality value is set in four types, namely good, sufficient, less good, and not good. The range of values ​​as a benchmark for the quality of public space is calculated by multiplying the maximum number of values ​​for each item on the question item by the weight of each sub-factor. The results showed that based on the measurement of the quality of the public space, it was found that the quality of the public space in the Dr. Art Building area. Ir. Soekarno is in the good category. Aspect value of needs (needs) obtained is 71.07 meaning good category. For the rights aspect, it got a score of 40.87 in the good category. Meanwhile, for the meaning aspect, the public space of the Dr. Art Building area. Ir. Soekarno got a score of 15.88 with a fairly good category. Overall, based on the results of data interpretation and analysis, it was concluded that the Dr. Ir Soekarno Art Building Area can be said to be a good quality public space.

The Effectiveness of Utilizing Non-Green Public Space in Untia Fishermen Settlement

Public Space in a settlement will be effective and useful if it has three intrinsic values, namely democratic, meaningful and responsive. Then the existence of people and how they play a role in space is important in reviewing the public nature of a space. The effectiveness of a public space can be assessed from the level of utilization by the community on the types of activities and social interactions of the people in it. Currently, the use of Non-Green Public Space is still not in line with expectations, namely the realization of a comfortable, productive and sustainable space, marked by the lack of community social activities in the Untia Fisherman Settlement Non-Green Public Space (NGPS). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of Non-Green Public Space in the Untia Fisherman Settlement in the form of Taman Bermain Delta and Plaza Park. The research method used in this study uses descriptive qualitative research methods because it describes the research location at the time of observation and compares standards and or theories with the facts of the availability of Non-Green Public Space (NGPS) in the settlements using the Good Public Space Index (GPSI) analysis tool. From the results of the analysis, it was found that the availability of the Taman Bermain Delta Non-Green Public Space in the Untia Fisherman Settlement was related in terms of utilization, as well as in terms of accessibility to the Non-Green Public Space, elements (Comfortable, Relaxation, Passive and Active engagement Discovery), as well as the availability of supporting facilities and infrastructure were still lacking. both in terms of quality and quantity. Re-effectiveness of the function and nature of the existence of the Non-Green Public Space in the Untia Fisherman Settlement requires cooperation from various parties.

FAKTOR YANG MEMPENGARUHI TINGKAT KUNJUNGAN TAMAN TEMATIK: STUDI KASUS TAMAN SKATEBOARD PALEMBANG

The realization of sustainable development goals is a major concern today. Related to the development of urban areas, this goal is contained in the 11th goal, which is to create sustainable cities and communities. One of the efforts to achieve this goal is through the provision of good public open spaces. Public open space has a role as a space for interaction and social space for its people. The development of thematic parks is one of the efforts to maximize the social benefits of public open spaces so that sustainable urban and community development can be realized. This study aims to identify the factors that influence visits to thematic parks. The method used is descriptive quantitative method using regression analysis. The incidental sampling technique used in this study, where the respondents were park visitors. The results show that the factors that greatly affect the frequency of thematic park visits are influenced by gender and interactions in the community, while other factors such as age, distance, and dominant factors.

EFEKTIVITAS PEMANFAATAN BANTARAN TUKAD BADUNG SEBAGAI RUANG TERBUKA PUBLIK DI KOTA DENPASAR

The city of Denpasar has made a new public open space arrangement by utilizing the existing space, in the form of the arrangement of the Tukad Badung riverbank at Kumbasari Park in Denpasar City. The activities carried out are recreation and as a forum for interaction for the community. Because of the phenomenon of using the Tukad Badung riverbank as a forum for interaction and community activities, it is therefore important to see the level of effectiveness and the dominant factors used in measuring the effectiveness of using the Tukad Badung bank as an open space public. The effectiveness of good utilization of public open space can be seen from the characteristics of space users and the characteristics of activities as an approach. The research data were obtained through observation, questionnaires, interviews, documentation, and agency surveys. Data analysis used qualitative descriptive analysis techniques with the Good Public Space Index method approach. The results showed the level of effectiveness of the use of the Tukad Badung riverbank as a public open space in Denpasar City at a value of 0.70 which is included in the "high" category. This assessment is obtained based on the results of the average value of the six indexes of the Good Public Space Index method. The dominant factors to measure the effectiveness of the use of the Tukad Badung riverbank as a public open space, namely the six GPSI indexes. The highest factor is the people's duration of stay index with a value of 0.88 or very high, it can be said that the Tukad Badung riverbank is very effective in accommodating the utilization of the diversity of time duration carried out by visitors in activities on the banks of Tukad Badung, on the contrary the intensity of use shows value of 0.45 and intensity of social use with a value of 0.60. This shows that the effectiveness of the Tukad Badung riverbank as a public open space in accommodating the large number of visitors and community groups who are included in the "medium" category due to the dominance of the number of people significant at a time.

The Sustainable Development Indicators of the Environment for Cultural Landscapes in Chung Hsing New Village, Taiwan

Chung Hsing New Village was built up to ease administrative issues and air defense relocate scheme by the government in 1956. It covers up to 252 hectares by national land and aims to in charge of the essential works of counties, cities and towns of the province. Furthermore, it was the pioneer of urban planning concerned with the development, design of land use and the built environment in Taiwan. Chung Hsing New Village took the case study from Ebenezer Howard's Garden City, included connecting the suburbanization development with compact layouts, low-density development with good public spaces and emphasis on neighborhood unit in the thoughts, to create a functional working environment and public facility as a model of town planning in Taiwan. However, due to the downsizing of the Taiwan provincial government in 1998, most administrative workers were laid off, and yet, the Jiji earthquake damaged lots of buildings in 1999. Despite this, the remarkable value of culture and advanced concept of town planning made Chung Hsing New Village had been listed as cultural landscapes preservation since 12th April 2011, but compare to the other countries’ regulation of cultural landscapes and sustainable environmental preservation framework, the authorities failed to act and lack of big picture caused severe problems like abandoned and ruined, etc. To sum up, this research aims to explore the core value of Chung Hsing New Village environmentally sustainable, follow up with literature review, field investigate and in-depth interview with experts to construct Chung Hsing New Village cultural landscapes. The sustainable development indicators and the weight analysis of analytic hierarchy Process (AHP). Comparing the two results, it demonstrates the value of sustainable development indicators and contributes to the following cohort study of Chung Hsing New Village.

Public spaces in Bangkok and the factors affecting the good public space quality in urban areas

Public spaces are an important component of the urban area used to support public activities. The aim of this study is to evaluate the quality of public spaces where subdivided into districts of Bangkok city area. A methodology is carry out preliminary site surveying in a 31 public parks based on four main good public space indicators, which including accessibility, imageability, usability and sociability. In this study, the Z-score or standard score is defined as a statistical measurement of the associate of site characteristics score, has been apply to determine quality of public spaces. The results reveal that the all of public spaces are outstanding scores in terms of imageability and usability, and their Z-score values are consistently coherent, especially the high-quality public spaces located in the inner zone of Bangkok. While accessibility and sociability factors are poor quality, their values show on some public spaces that mostly located in the middle and in the outer zones of Bangkok. These results can be helpful to given a priority when managing city facilities in the Bangkok’s urban space and maintaining or improving its public space value.

Konsep Penataan Ruang Terbuka Publik berdasarkan Pola Aktivitas Pengguna (Studi Kasus Alun-alun Kota Bekasi)

Bekasi City Square is one of the public green open spaces chosen by the people of Bekasi City. However, Bekasi City Square still has problems in the provision and quality of facilities to support users' activities, such as the unavailability of trading areas, lack of lighting and security facilities, damage to children's play areas and toilets, and lack of parking facilities. Therefore, this research was conducted to formulate the physical structuring concept of Bekasi City Square. The structuring concept is produced through behavior mapping analysis, comparative analysis, good public space index analysis, and kano analysis. Behavior mapping analysis is used to determine the distribution of activities and activity actors used as input in analyzing a good public space index. Comparative analysis and good public space index analysis are used to measure physical quality and space utilization in Bekasi City Square. Kano analysis is used to determine the priority of the structuring concept carried out for each attribute. The results of this study formulated the concept of structuring the Bekasi City Square on each attribute in the form of provision of facilities, improved quality of facilities, and a diversity of facilities.

 Title: Residential Integration in TOD to Overcome the Transit Problem in Pasar Lama Area, Tangerang
 The Pasar Lama (Old Town Market) area is known as a highly developing area in the city of Tangerang. This area facilitated with a commuter train station used by people commuted from Tangerang to Jakarta in daily basis – both for transitting and shopping purposes. Tangerang Station is the main train station for commuters’ from-and-to Jakarta; therefore, urban issues arise in the main urban nodes of the area, specifically the main boulevard near the station and the market. Issues such as transportation traffic, pedestrian congestion, informal street-vendors activities, and the arrangement of residential areas are major concern that needs to be addressed in the purpose of creating a good urban public space in the region. The solution to overcome this problem is to apply a concept for a TOD (Transit Oriented Development). TOD is a sustainable transportation system approach that provides accessibility and alternative modes of transportation. With the implementation of TOD in the transit station area, it is expected that the entire Pasar Lama area will be developed and created a good urban public space. This research study aims to answer several research questions, for instance: how does the concept of the TOD is able to integrate a residential program into the development and create a successful an urban public space as a transit area in the area of Pasar Lama, Tangerang. This research begins with context analysis based on several theories about urban dimension, human scale and key factors of a TOD. Precedent studies and observations on surrounding site, serve as references in analyzing and proposing draft concepts for this particular neighborhood. This research study will have an outcome in the form of design concept proposal that allow TOD to incorporate residential, parking, commercial, and open space as one district to revitalize the congested neighborhood in the Pasar Lama area, Tangerang.
 
 

The Study of Public Open Space effectiveness in Makassar Waterfront City using Good Public Space Index (GPSI)

Anjungan Pantai Losari is one of the famous public spaces in Makassar; it is a primary landmark in the city. Nevertheless, this public space is considered not optimal because it is only crowded with people’s activities in the afternoon and night. On the other hand, some theories argued that a good public open space has the ability to accommodate various people all day long. This study was conducted to evaluate and to study the effectiveness of public open space using the Good Public Space Index (GPSI). There are six variables used in GPSI: intensity use, the intensity of social use, people’s duration of stay, temporal diversity use, variety of use, and diversity of users. This study found that the average of GPSI value shows the high score of Anjungan Pantai Losari effectiveness. However, two variables, intensity of use and people duration of social use were still at a low level. It was expected that this research could be a reference to develop spatial planning, especially the improvement of public open space quality.
