A grounded theory study on the dynamics of parental grief during the children's end of life.

Parents are increasingly confronted with loss during their child's end of life. Healthcare professionals struggle with parental responses to loss. This study aimed to understand parental coping with grief during their child's end of life. A grounded theory study was performed, using semi-structured interviews with parents during the child's end of life and recently bereaved parents. Data were collected in four children's university hospitals and paediatric homecare services between October 2020 and December 2021. A multidisciplinary team conducted the analysis. In total, 38 parents of 22 children participated. Parents strived to sustain family life, to be a good parent and to ensure a full life for their child. Meanwhile parents' grief increased because of their hypervigilance towards signs of loss. Parents' coping with grief is characterised by an interplay of downregulating grief and connecting with grief, aimed at creating emotional space to be present and connect with their child. Parents connected with grief when it was forced upon them or when they momentarily allowed themselves to. The parents' ability to engage with grief becomes strained during the end of life. Healthcare professionals should support parents in their search for a balance that facilitates creating emotional space.

Learning Organizational Leadership Strategy in Improving the Quality of Middle Level Education

The research is motivated by the need to form an appropriate leadership strategy to improve the quality of education by collaborating with all members including teachers, staff, students, and parents or guardians of students. This study aims to analyze and answer learning organization leadership strategies in improving the quality of secondary education. The research method used is a literature study based on articles, papers, books and other sources that support research with a qualitative approach. The results of this study indicate that improving the quality of secondary education requires strong leadership from school principals, good teacher performance, student and parent involvement in the education process, and attention to internal and external factors that affect education quality.

Can we prevent anxiety in adults with congenital heart disease with good parenting practices in childhood?

IntroductionMedical-technical advances are contributing to the increased life expectancy of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) (Ladouceur et al., 2021). As they grow up into adulthood, they face many challenges (eg. surgeries, hospitalizations, separations from family, cardiac symptoms, anxiety symptoms). It is known that some parenting practices like parental overprotection during childhood are associated with anxiety in the general population, but little is known in this population.ObjectivesWe aim to measure the contribution of parental practices (global; positive: warm care, consistent structure, autonomy support; and negative: overprotection) to explain variance in anxiety symptoms in adults with CHD, beyond sociodemographic and antecedents of pediatric hospitalisations.MethodsAn observational cross-sectional study was conducted on 223 adults with CHD followed at the Montreal Heart Institute. We evaluated anxiety symptoms and retrospective parental practices using validated self-reported questionnaires, namely the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Parental Bonding Inventory, the Perceived Parental Autonomy Support and the Multidimensional Parental Structure Scale. Sociodemographic and antecedents of pediatric hospitalisations information was collected from medical records and pediatric archives. Hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses were conducted.ResultsThe average age of our participants is 46 years and the majority (59 %) were female at birth. The median number of hospitalisation before 18 years old was two. 15 % presented severe anxiety symptoms (HADS-A ≥ 11), 17 % had moderate symptoms (HADS-A = 8-10), and 68 % had mild or no symptoms (HADS-A ≤ 7).The inclusion of parenting practices significantly increased the proportion of variance explaining anxiety symptoms. They explained more variance (13%) than sociodemographic and pediatric hospitalisations combined (10%).In this model, only positive parenting practices were significantly associated with anxiety, in contrast to parental overprotection.When the parental practices were analyzed separately, positive practices (autonomy, care, and structure) were negatively associated with anxiety symptoms, while overprotection was positively associated with anxiety symptoms.ConclusionsOur results suggest that although our participants’ physical health may be limited by their CHD, the majority report a low anxiety scores. Further, parenting practices appear to be malleable predictors of anxiety. Beyond avoiding overprotective parenting style, positive and supportive parenting practices are potential targets for future initiatives to prevent anxiety symptoms in adults with CHD.Disclosure of InterestNone Declared

Strategi Message Appeals Ono Harato Sebua dalam Kampanye Stop Kekerasan Terhadap Anak

Wahana Visi Indonesia for the South Nias Program Area is a non-profit organization that carries out a campaign to stop violence against children by using a strategy of message appeals with the nuances of local wisdom, namely ono harato sebua. The research employs a descriptive method using a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques are interviews, observation and documentation. The result shows that the use of message appeals of ono harato sebua in the campaign to stop violence against children, using rational appeals, emotional appeals and morality appeals. The rational appeals use visual media and socialization. Visual media using stickers written on ono harato sebua, and socialization is to convey data on violence against children that occurred in South Nias regency, accompanied by presentation on children’s rights. The emotional appeal that arises is positive emotional appeals, and the moral appeal that appears is the attitude of responsibility and changes in good and right parenting patterns. Barriers that arise during the campaign are personal barriers and environmental barriers. Personal barriers refer to public’s perception of the campaign to stop violence against children, while environmental barriers refer to the indifference and lack of cooperation between community groups in supporting the campaign.

Content Analysis of ‘Preparing for Parenthood’ Chapters in the 2015 Revised Curriculum High-School Technology and Home Economics Textbooks: Implications for Pre-Parent Education Aimed at Adolescents

This study aimed to identify ways to implement pre-parent education for adolescents in regular classes at school. This was achieved by investigating whether the contents of the 2015 revised curriculum high-school technology and home economics textbooks reflected the goals of pre-parent education. The main texts and activities of chapters with ‘preparing for parenthood’ in the title from 12 high-school technology and home economics education textbooks were analyzed with respect to the three pre-parent education goals of developing perceptions and attitudes toward parenthood, learning parenting knowledge and skills, and reinforcing parental capacity. The results were as follows. First, textbook contents and activities reflected the three goals of pre-parent education in a balanced manner. Second, both the contents and activities of textbooks tried to motivate students to perceive parenthood and parenting through reflection on their relationship with their own parents. Third, because the textbooks encouraged students to consider parenthood and parenting, they acknowledged the importance of undertaking pre-parent education to reinforce their parental capacities. Using such textbooks in regular technology and home economics classes is expected to provide students with an opportunity to consider parenthood and shape their perceptions and attitudes accordingly, thereby allowing adolescents to prepare themselves for parenthood and become good parents.

Relationships between psychosocial well-being and leisure time physical activity among 160.000 young Finnish men: a cross-sectional study during 2015–2021

Evidence on the relationship between psychosocial well-being and physical activity (PA) is insufficient, especially in young adults between 18 and 29 years. Identifying protective factors for psychosocial well-being as well as factors that may promote PA behaviour in this specific age group is crucial.The aim of the present study was to explore the association between self-reported leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and a number of measures of psychosocial well-being in a large sample of Finnish young men. The sample used for this study is based on registers of the Finnish Defence Forces and consist of questionnaire-based data collected from 159,776 young healthy men (18–29 years, mean age 19 years) who started their military service during the period from 2015 to 2021. Sum scores were calculated for self-esteem and prosocial behaviour. Physical activity, number of friends and the relationship with the parents were each measured with a single question. Unadjusted and adjusted (education, financial situation of the family, family structure) logistic regression models were calculated.A multinominal logistic regression analysis showed that a higher level of LTPA was associated with a higher level of both prosocial behaviour (OR 6.12, 95% CI 5.88–6.36) and self-esteem (OR 4.41 95% CI 4.28–4.54). Further, LTPA had a positive relationship with good social relations, both with peers and parents. The odds ratio for participation in any LTPA weekly was higher (OR 2.74; CI 2.27–3.20) among those who had a close and trustworthy relationship with their parents compared to those men with more challenging relationships with their parents (OR 1.77; CI 1.46–2.14). An inactive lifestyle (PA less than once a week) seemed to be most common among men with no friends. About one third (31%) of men with no friends reported to engage in LTPA less than once a week, while only 10% of men with very many good friends reported to engage in similarly inactive LTPA behaviour.LTPA seems to be positively associated with self-esteem, prosocial behaviour and good social relations among young adult men. Actions aimed at promoting LTPA may have a positive impact on psychosocial well-being among young men, or vice versa. The relationship between PA and psychosocial well-being is complex and interrelated.

Parenting Relationships With Stunting Incidence In Toddlers Aged 12-59 Months In Pasirhaur Village In 2022

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the prevalence of parenting and stunting worldwide is 22 percent or as many as 149.2 million in 2020. Stunting is caused by multi-dimensional factors and not only caused by malnutrition experienced by pregnant women and children under five, another cause is poor parenting practices, including the lack of knowledge of mothers about health and nutrition before and during pregnancy, as well as after mothers give birth. Purpose of Writing : To determine the relationship between parenting style and the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 12-59 months in Pasirhaur village in 2022. Research Methods : Case control research with a quantitative approach. A sample of 82 mothers with toddlers in November 2022. The sampling technique used is non-probability sampling with purposive sampling method. Results of the study : Poor parenting styles were more common in cases of stunting, with 31 people (75.6%) than good parenting styles for stunted toddlers, with 10 people (24.4%). In the chy-square test, the results of parenting variables for mothers' knowledge were lacking P value 0.008 <0.05, Not exclusive breastfeeding P value 0.03 <0.05, not MP-ASI P value 0.055 <0.05 , and care for sick children who lack P value 0.012 <0.05, so the analysis is that there is a relationship between parenting parents and stunting in toddlers aged 12-59 months in Pasirhaur Village in 2022. Conclusion : Good parenting can reduce the risk of stunting in toddlers and it is hoped that health workers, especially midwives

The construction of (good) parents (as professionals) in/through learning platforms

The increasing platformization of contemporary education is reshaping schooling in a multitude of ways, including the relationship parents have with their children’s education. While a growing number of research is revealing the influential impacts platforms have on various educational professions, few scholars have so far looked at how parents are designed, made visible and normatively regulated (e.g., as being/becoming professional) in/through specific platforms, also because associating parents with educational professionality seems much less self-evident than for groups such as teachers or principals. As we argue in this contribution, drawing on ongoing discussions from the field of parenthood, studies offers fruitful inspiration to not only better understand what parental (educational) professionalization means, but equally how it can be brought together with research on parental platformization. Building on that literature framework, we then illuminate what we see when employing such an approach empirically, using two distinct learning platforms as case studies – ClassDojo, a classroom and behavior management platform used mainly in anglophone countries, and Antolin, a reading enhancement platform used in German schools. Drawing on the initial findings from both case studies, we conclude with a suggested research agenda around ‘platformized parents’ and offer a framework of questions to guide its advancement.

Building good knowledge or blaming bad parents? Examining the construction of parents and parenting in a corpus of parent focussed cochlear implant research articles

AbstractParents of deaf children with a cochlear implant (CI) report feeling pressure to adhere to a very prescribed conceptualisation of ‘good parenting’, and in some cases report feeling judged or blamed, for example, if the child's progress post‐CI is slower than expected. Previous investigations of the discourses of parenting science suggest that, while parent blame is rarely expressed explicitly, that normative, moral assumptions about how ‘good parents of a disabled child’ should feel, think and act are embedded within prevalent concepts and terminology. A disproportionate focus on evaluating individual parents' personal characteristics at the expense of more external, socially located issues has also been noted. Existing critiques, together with the author's lived experience provide the impetus for this study; in which corpus linguistics methods have been used to document the types of parents and parenting attributes constructed in a 420,982 corpus of research articles. The results indicate the prevalence of many highly evaluative parenting noun‐collocates within the field; successful adaptation, a positive appraisal of the situation, realistic expectations, rational decisions, high involvement and full‐time use of the CI are conflated with good parenting, whilst parents who present in alternate ways are construed as problematic. Implications for future research are discussed.

Parenting knowledge and parenting self-efficacy of mothers with borderline personality disorder and depression: "I know what to do but think I am not doing it".

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex mental health condition often associated with previous childhood adversity including maladaptive parenting. When becoming a parent themselves, mothers with BPD have difficulties with various parenting cognitions and practices, but unknown is whether they have appropriate knowledge of sensitive parenting. This study explored whether differences in parenting knowledge or self-efficacy are specific to BPD or also found in mothers with depression, and whether symptom severity or specific diagnosis better explain parenting perceptions. Mothers with BPD (n = 26), depression (n = 25) or HCs (n = 25) completed a Q-sort parenting knowledge task and a parenting self-efficacy questionnaire. Results showed mothers with BPD had the same knowledge of sensitive parenting behaviors as mothers with depression and healthy mothers. Self-reported parenting self-efficacy was lower in mothers with BPD and depression compared with healthy mothers, with symptom severity most strongly associated. A significant but low correlation was found between parenting self-efficacy and knowledge. Findings suggest that mothers with BPD and depression know what good parenting is but think they are not parenting well. Mental health difficulties are not associated with parenting knowledge, but symptom severity appears to be a common pathway to lower parenting self-efficacy. Future interventions should test whether reduction of symptom severity or positive parenting feedback could improve parenting self-efficacy.

Study of dental phobia, psychological resilience, and related factors in children aged 8-9 years in Weifang city.

To investigate the influencing factors of children's dental fear (CDF) and the relationship of CDF with resilience in children aged 8-9 years in Weifang city to provide evidence for the early prevention and intervention of CDF. Random cluster sampling method was applied. A total of 1 995 children aged 8-9 years from 10 primary schools in four districts of Weifang city were selected from June to October 2021 as the survey objects. General information questionnaire, the children's fear survey schedule-dental sub-scale, and adolescent resilience scale were used in the investigation. The CDF detection rate was 31.78% (634 cases) in children aged 8-9 years in Weifang city, including 28.41% (296 cases) in boys and 35.47% (338 cases) in girls. Multivariate logistic analysis showed that female gender [odds ratio (OR)=1.329, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.062-1.665], dental caries (OR=1.961, 95%CI=1.330-2.891), dental pain (OR=2.133, 95%CI=1.700-2.676), and dental treatment experience (OR=3.621, 95%CI=2.888-4.540) are risk factors for CDF. Parents with tertiary education or higher (OR=2.123, 95%CI=1.546-2.916; OR=3.304, 95%CI=2.368-4.612), high scores in the positive cognition factor of the psychological resilience-personal strength dimension (OR=1.520, 95%CI=1.141-2.025), high scores in the interpersonal assistance factor of the psychological resilience-support strength dimension (OR=3.819, 95%CI=2.743-5.318), and high scores in the family support factor (OR=5.634, 95%CI=4.047-7.844) were protective factors for CDF occurrence (P<0.05). Children with high psychological resilience scores have low CDF incidence, and good parenting practices are beneficial in reducing CDF incidence.

Background : Nutritional problems in toddlers are diseorders of the health and welfare of toddlers, due to imbalance between intake and the body’s need for food and the efect of interaction of infectious diseases. Based on a preliminary study at Puskesmas Marga II, the total population of toddlers in Tegaljadi Village are 151 people and base on interviews with 10 respondents, 5 of them have toddlers with malnutrition status.&#x0D; Objective : To determine the relationship of mother parenting patterns with toddler’s nutritional status.&#x0D; Method : This study using descriptive correlation design and cross sectional approach. The sampling technique using purposive sampling with a total sample of 110 people. Data collection are done by giving questonnaires to respondents and measuring the weight of toddlers. The data was analyzed using the Spearman Rank test to see the significance of statistical calculations using a significant limit if p&lt; 0,05.&#x0D; Result : The results of this study of respondents who have a good parenting patterns of 78.2% and 21.8% of adequate parenting patterns, while 1.8% of respondents with malnutrition status, 20.9% of adequate nutrition, 75.5% well-nourished, over nutrition as much as 1.8%.&#x0D; Conclusion : There is a significant relationship between mother parenting patterns and toddler’s nutritional status.&#x0D; Keywords : Toddlers, parenting pattern, nutritional status.&#x0D;

PARENTING AND CHILDREN'S EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Every child is born with His nature, and children are entitled to good education and upbringing to build their character. Parents have a crucial role in forming a child's character. Parents become role models for their children, so they must choose a good parenting pattern. In addition to parenting provided by parents, the environment is also one of the influences in forming children's character. This study aims to determine the influence of parents' parenting on children's emotional development. The sample of this study consisted of 15 parents and 15 children aged 12-20 years, using a quantitative survey method that focuses on the views between parents and children. This study indicates that there is indeed an influence caused by choice of parenting patterns on children's emotional development.

The Correlation of Environment and Smoking Habit of Family Members with Smoking Habit of School Age Children

The smoking habit of school-age children is a phenomenon that is easily found in various regions in Indonesia. Smoking habit in school-age children is not only uncomfortable to look at but also has the potential to trigger an increasing health problems caused by smoking habit. Some of the factors that influence smoking habit in school-age children are the environment and smoking behavior of family members. This study was using analytic research design with a cross sectional approach. The sample in this study were school-age children (grade V and grade VI) in Mangelo Village, Mojokerto Regency who met the research criteria as many as 51 respondents who were taken using a purposive sampling technique. The independent variables in this study were the environment and smoking habits of family members. The dependent variable in this study is the smoking habits of school-age children. The research instrument used in this study was a modified questionnaire using a Google form to implement health protocols during the Covid-19 pandemic. In order to determine the correlation between the environment and the smoking behavior of family members with the smoking habits of school-age children in Mangelo Village, Mojokerto Regency, the chi square test was used with a significance of α : 0.05. There was an environmental correlation to the smoking habits of school-age children in Mangelo Village, Mojokerto Regency with a sig (2-tailed) value of 0.003 &lt;α (0.05) and there was a correlation between the smoking behavior of family members with the smoking habits of school-age children in Mangelo Village, Mojokerto Regency with sig value (2-tailed) of 0.020 &lt;α (0.05). Parents' affection which was manifested in the form of good parenting for school-age children would provide positive support to school-age children in dealing with any negative influences such as smoking behavior.

Gambaran Pola Asuh Orangtua dalam kaitannya dengan Motivasi Belajar Anak

The purpose of this study was to obtain an overview of parenting related to children's learning motivation, the type of parenting that is effective in motivating children's learning, and to know the role of parenting in influencing children's learning motivation. This study uses a qualitative approach, with 5 children and 5 parents as research subjects. Collecting data using observation, interviews, and other complementary data. The results of the study in the form of parenting and parental participation have an effect on children's learning motivation. Children with democratic parenting have good and sufficient motivation to learn. Children with permissive parenting have less motivation. The application of good parenting can be realized through treatment, attention, fulfillment of needs, and attitudes of parents. The appropriate treatment is in educating children, which will later make it easier to increase children's motivation when learning.

MENINGKATKAN ENGLISH AWARENESS DENGAN FUN LISTENING ACTIVITY

Language awareness is a term that can help students use and learn English better. Language awareness that is owned will help motivate when someone learns a language. However, English as EFL (English as Foreign Language) in Indonesia presents a challenge to students who have minimal exposure to English. This community service aims to promote language awareness by using activities such as the interactive Fun Listening Activity. Respondents in this activity were parents of school students. The evaluation of this activity was considered good and enthusiastic parents could get ideas for a fun way of learning English for their children. After the community service activities were completed in the form of counseling, it can be concluded that respondents who took part in the activities were able to get new and fun ideas while learning English.

Developmental pathways of depressive symptoms via parenting, self-evaluation and peer relationships in young people from 3 to 17 years old: evidence from ALSPAC

PurposeSelf-evaluation and interpersonal factors are theoretically and empirically linked to depression in young people. An improved understanding of the multifactorial developmental pathways that explain how these factors predict depression could inform intervention strategies.MethodsUsing structural equation modeling, this study explored whether self-evaluation and interpersonal factors were associated with adolescent depressive symptoms in a population-based sample (n = 11,921; Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, ALSPAC), across four development stages: early and late childhood plus early and middle adolescence from 3 to 17 years old.ResultsEarly good parenting practices predicted self-esteem, fewer peer difficulties, good friendships and fewer depressive symptoms in late childhood development outcomes. Higher self-esteem and less negative self-concept mediated the effect of early good parenting practice on reduced depressive symptoms in middle adolescence. The hypothesized erosion pathway from depressive symptoms in late childhood via higher levels of negative self-concept in early adolescence to depressive symptoms in middle adolescence was also confirmed. Additionally, peer difficulties played a mediation role in developing depressive symptoms. Contrary to the hypothesis, poor friendships predicted fewer depressive symptoms. The analysis supported a developmental pathway in which good parenting practices in early childhood led to fewer peer difficulties in late childhood and to less negative self-concept in early adolescence, which in turn predicted fewer depressive symptoms in middle adolescence.ConclusionThe social-developmental origin of youth depressive symptoms was supported via the effect of peer relationships in late childhood on self-evaluation in early adolescence.

Hong Kong Adolescents’ Participation in Political Activities: Correlates of Violent Political Participation

The present study aimed to examine Hong Kong junior secondary school students’ participation in different types of political activities, to identify profiles of adolescents based on their political participation, and to examine potential protective and risk factors associated with adolescents’ violent political participation during the social unrest in Hong Kong from a positive youth development perspective. A total of 2,016 students (age = 13.92 ± 1.10 years) recruited from 24 secondary schools in Hong Kong participated in an online survey six months after the social unrest subsided. The findings provide a comprehensive descriptive profile of Hong Kong adolescents’ political participation. Four clusters of adolescents with homogeneous patterns of political participation were identified: (1) “Politically Inactive” (42.6%); (2) “Legal Participant” (27.5%); (3) “Radical/Violent Activist” (13.0%); and (4) “Peaceful Activist” (17.0%). Logistic regression analysis showed that being female, born in Hong Kong, having a weak local identity and a strong national identity, a high level of bonding, prosocial involvement and prosocial norms, a low level of parental psychological control and family conflict, and a good parent–child relationship were associated with a low risk of adolescents’ violent political participation. The findings point to the needs to further promote social cohesion in Hong Kong society, to help adolescents avoid the potentially essentialized dichotomy in their identity construction, and to develop programs targeting the identified risk and protective factors to prevent adolescents from engaging in political violence and to promote their civic participation.

Parenting Style on the Civics Learning Outcome

The implementation of learning in the school is pretty good, but learning at home is not optimal because students have less desire to learn independently. Lack of parenting guidance interfered with learning activities. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between parenting styles and learning outcomes of fifth-grade elementary school students in Civics subject. The type of research was ex post facto. The research population was 37 students. Students on the first semester of the fifth-grade elementary school. The method of collecting data was non-test. The questionnaire was used as an instrument to collect the data. The data analysis technique used was descriptive statistical analysis and inferential statistical analysis. The study results were 0.655 &gt; 0.316, so there was a correlation between study habits and the learning outcomes of fifth-grade elementary school students. There was a positive relationship between parenting and learning outcomes. It was concluded that a good parenting style would significantly improve student learning outcomes.
