Harnessing traditional institutions for sustainable leadership and good governance in Nigeria

The subject of traditional institutions cannot be undermined in the project of sustainable leadership and good governance in Nigeria given the locus and crucial role of the institution in the past and modern Nigeria. It is incontrovertible that traditional and aboriginal values are held highly with reverence and respect in virtually all parts of Nigeria. To discountenance their relevance will be too costly in any leadership-cum-governance discourse. Towns, villages and cities were duly recognized and protected as the harbingers of culture, mores, norms and values. The contemporary government structure in Nigeria duly recognizes the importance of traditional institutions by having a Commission for Local Government (LG) and Chieftaincy Affairs at all State levels. Moreover, 5% of allocations to LGs go statutorily to the tradition institution in the State. Hitherto, the recklessness and abuse of the native authority system of local government administration in the 1950s–60s had led to the moderation and reforms of the system, which has continued to affect traditional institutions to date. To this end, the paper argues that traditional institutions hold so much values and cohesive practices as well as socially integrative potentials for nation-building so much that the State can leverage on them for sustainable leadership and overall good governance. The methodology adopted for collecting data for this study is descriptive research method, which relies on primary direct observation (eye-witness) account and relevant secondary materials such as texts, journal articles, official documents and internet materials. The data collected were analyzed and presented using thematic analysis and tables. National and international data already analyzed were found essential to drive home the argument of this study. The outcome of the paper provides useful information on how traditional institutions serve as a veritable platform for sustainable leadership and good governance in Nigeria. The paper concluded that traditional institutions, with its rich culture, values and practices, possess sufficient merits to propel the country towards sustainable leadership that would concomitantly induce economic, technological and political growth in Nigeria.

Social Studies and Citizenship Education: Its Role in Entrenching Right Democratic Values in Students

This paper investigated social studies and citizenship education’s role in entrenching right democratic values in students. Over time, there has been expressed dissatisfaction by the Edo people that the government officials and representatives do not reflect public choice. There are also situations where individuals show up for voter’s registration and still fail to vote when the time comes. Nigeria has continuously been plagued by electoral malpractices and a whole lot of misconduct which gives the impression that social studies education has not made a remarkable impact. The paper examined the concept of social studies, civic and citizenship education, attitude towards voters’ registration, attitude towards the rule of law, attitude towards voting, attitude towards the electoral process and good governance in Nigeria, and concluded that social studies curriculum content be broadened to address the issues of political education.

Test of Good Governance in Nigeria using World Bank indicators

The concern for good governance and its role in development process has increased since 1980s. Nigeria has experienced uninterrupted democracy since 1999. This study carryout a test of good governance in Nigeria using the six indicators of good governance used by World Bank. Specifically, the study determine the effect of voice and accountability, political stability and absence of violence and terrorism, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law and control of corruption on economic development in Nigeria using per capita GDP as a proxy for economic development. Inflation rate and oil price were included in the model in order to produce a robust model. Annual data covering 1999 to 2022 were collected from World Bank website. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize data while Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model and Bound tests were used to estimate relationship. Findings revealed that the performance of governance in Nigeria in all the six indicators during the period of study was weak. This consequently affect per capita income negatively both in the short-run and long-run. It was concluded that governance has negative effect on economic development in Nigeria. It was recommended that the government should use worldwide indicators to conduct self-evaluation and carry out reforms that will help to improve governance in Nigeria for the purpose of achieving development or improving the wellbeing of Nigerians.

Immigration and Economic Growth of Nigeria: A study of Awka Youths, Anambra State.

The study explored the immigration and economic growth of Nigeria: A study of Awka youths, Anambra State. The specific objectives were to examine the relationship between political instability and human development in Nigeria. Also, to ascertain the relationship between asylum seeking and good governance in Nigeria. The study was anchored on Public Investment Theory, propounded by economist David Aschauer. The study used discriptive survey research design. The target population are 100 youths in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria, who were given a structured questionnaire to fill. Hypotheses were tested with Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient on Statistical Packages for Social Science (SPSS version 27) at 5% level of significance. Hypothesis one indicated that there is a statistically significant negative relationship between political instability and human development in Nigeria, with r = -0.648, n = 100 and p value of 0.006 (p<0.05). Hypothesis two showed that there is a statistically significant negative relationship between asylum seeking and good governance in Nigeria, with r = -0.812 n = 100 and p value of 0.000 (p<0.05). The study concluded that immigration has a detrimental effect on the economic growth of Nigeria, specifically among the youth in Awka, Anambra State, suggesting that policies addressing immigration and economic growth are needed. The study recommended that the Nigerian government needs to prioritize stabilizing the political environment to foster human development and well-being of its citizens.

National Security and Good Governance in Nigeria: The Hermeneutical Imperative

Nigeria is plagued with developmental problems and security challenges. Religion no doubt contributes a significant percentage to insecurity, despite its positives; and portends a grave danger which is highly inflammable. This is why any meaningful discourse on national security and good governance must consider the religious perspective as pivotal. The objective of this paper, therefore, is to examine how religious hermeneutics can contribute to national development, good governance, and security. Data were sourced using the qualitative phenomenological method, wherein the study seeks to investigate the religious lived experiences within the backdrop of religious hermeneutics. This paper adopts the antithesis of the philosophy of orthodoxy that does not present interpretations that fit in with the changed conditions of the world. The methodology of dynamic hermeneutics philosophy submits the findings that individuals or groups in specific historical situations can interpret their sacred texts in a way that facilitates violence and insecurity. The recommendation is that contemporary religious hermeneutics should at all times engender peace, security and good governance.

The paper focuses on the effects of SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19 in Nigeria as relates to issues of religion and the challenges of good governance. The recent outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 in most countries of the world, which culminated in governments across the globe, instituting measures of lockdown as a means of containing the spread of the virus, appears to be a perceptible assessment for the religious institutions to re-evaluate their allegiance and commitment to good governance in Nigeria. The paper is a qualitative assessment of the issues of religious beliefs and the challenges of good governance in Nigeria as undergirded by the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in social distancing and banning of congregational religious activities in most countries of the world, was seen as a threat to religious activities by some religious groups and leadership in Nigeria. This notion consequently led to various utterances and actions that challenged the responsive efforts of government in containing the virus. The paper argues that such conducts are inimical to state public health measures and good governance in Nigeria. It, therefore, surmises that religious groups, particularly their leaders, need to discontinue from complicating an already challenged political leadership of the country, rather they should endeavour to use their enormous influence and contribute towards good governance by controlling faith-based emotions, synergizing and assisting the government, especially in such difficult time in history as presented by the pandemic. If religious sentiments are significantly controlled, democratic governance in Nigeria will fare better.

Governance, Recycled Politicians and Recycling Politics in Nigeria

The politics of recycling, a political system where the same set of people continue to dominate the political affairs of a given country, is one of the challenges undermining political development and good governance in Nigeria. The study, therefore, analyzes the effects of the politics of recycling on Nigeria's governance and administrative system. The qualitative study covers Nigeria's Second Republic from October 1, 1979, to Nigeria's Fourth Republic, which commenced on May 29, 1999 – 2022. The data for the study were gathered from primary and secondary sources. Primary data were gathered through interviews with a number of respondents comprising a Journalist, Engineer, Lecturer, Doctoral Student, Administrator, Lawyer, Human Rights Activist, and Businessmen. A convenience sampling technique was used to select the available and willing respondents to participate in the study. In addition, the researcher's close observations of events in Nigeria form part of the data for the study. The secondary data were gathered through official documents, textbooks, journals, and internet sources. The data collected were analyzed using the content analysis method. The study adopted the Recycling Theory of Abiku to analyze recycled politicians and their antecedents in Nigeria's political activities. According to African mythology, Abiku personifies a child who dies and is reborn repeatedly into the same family and causes pain to its hosts each time the child comes. Nigeria's political class, in a similar manner to Abiku, has continued to play recycling politics without offering anything towards the progress and development of the country, thereby repeatedly leaving a cycle that causes pain to Nigerians. The study concluded that recycling or parading the same set of politicians in the governance and administrative affairs of the country is inimical to the country's political, social, and economic development. The study recommended that the electorates must rise to crush the recycled politicians' antics and tactics and vote for new-breed politicians with impeccable character and proven integrity. Pressure should be mounted on the Independent Electoral Commission by journalists, civil society, national and international observers, as well as other stakeholders on the need to conduct free and fair elections in the country.

The challenges of leadership and good governance in Nigeria

Since time immemorial, one of the greatest challenges for leaders across the globe has been to the ability to predict the unpredictable successfully. The ones who could do so thrived, while the ones who missed the boat perished. These few years has brought to Nigeria something that, perhaps no one could have predicted. The banditry, corruptions and herds men activities in Nigeria have altered the core of our leadership and good governance completely. With the paper relying solely on the secondary source of data and analyzed its data through textual observations. It examines the challenges of leadership and good governance in the Nigeria. The finding reveals that, electoral malpractice is the main challenges of good governance in this new age. This study concludes that, effective leadership is the key to overcome the current challenges posed on the good governance in the Country. The paper, therefore, recommends among others, that the, electoral commission should be really independent, not by name in order to prevent the executive organ from influencing it. The pose of INEC Chairman should be advertised and the application of men with good moral standing should be considered. The executive should not be involved in the recruitment of INEC Chairman.

Traditional Institutions and Good Governance in Nigeria

Traditional institutions as custodian of cultures and traditions have continued to play a very significant role before and during colonial independence of many African societies. In Nigeria they provide a system of administration with an utmost aim of maintaining a stable governance through tradition, customs, and law and order. But with the advent of democracy, the role of traditional institutions became less recognized in the democratic system of government. The paper examined the role and relevance of indigenous traditional institutions to good governance. The paper was a quantitative research. Data was obtained from secondary sources including journals, articles and publications. The paper revealed that traditional institutions play a very significant role of sustaining culture and traditions, informally managing of conflict, maintaining peace, custodian of oral traditional history of the people etc. before and during colonial era. But with the advent of democracy, their power and duties became less recognized in the democratic system of government because traditional institutions were negated to the back door and politicized. Functionalism theory of Emile Durkheim (1858 – 1917) was employed to explain how society is an integrated whole, where all parts are interconnected and traditional institutions as part of the society, play a vital function of maintaining stability and contributing to the wellbeing of its members in terms of law, order and governance. The paper concluded that if the goal of government at all levels is to provide good governance to the people, rapid in social wealth and economic development, traditional institutions need to be integrated and assigned greater responsibilities in Nigerian’s contemporary democratic system of government because they have the ability to promote grassroots governance and facilitate access of rural communities to public services.

Pulpit and Politics: Christianity in the Struggle for Good Governance in Nigeria

AbstractChristian pulpits are vocal and powerful political platforms in most countries of the world today. Through diverse forms of oracular messages, Christian pulpits engage itself in state affairs and governance of Nigeria. From blatant or cautious prophecies to flagrant or stealth solicitations for political candidates and their parties, some pulpits immerse themselves in politics. Moreover, either with the view to compliment or disparage the pulpit, the diverse politically inclined pews and the public often argue on the boundary of Christian pulpits in politics. As the pulpit actors often claim a divine responsibility to guide the country in the political space, it is confronted with the poser, on where and how to draw the line between its spiritual mandate and political stewardship. It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the roles of Christian pulpits in the struggle for good governance in Nigeria. Adopting literal criticism, the study concludes that the roles of the pulpit can be well-defined in politics. In addition, it should not limit its contributions to politics, as long as good governance remains its primary concern.

Inter-Party Carpet-Crossing Among Legislators and Implications for Oversight Functions and Governance in Nigeria

This paper examined the implications of inter-party defections by the APC and PDP elites in the National Assembly on law making and governance in Nigeria. It has been observed that emerging political coalitions may not always reflect policy preferences or philosophical differences since they are mostly based on personalities and agreement among political leaders. Political parties are widely acknowledged to have a significant impact on the oversight and accountability of governmental operations and policies. Political parties’ refusal to impose such rules stifles efficient public representation at all levels. The survey research method was employed to gather data, while the elite theory was found useful in explaining the study. For the purpose of analysis, the Simple Linear Regression was executed with the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) for the testing of the hypothesis at 0.5 significance level. The finding of the study revealed that the APC and PDP elites’ inter-party defections in the National Assembly had a substantial influence on the enactment of laws for good governance in Nigeria. Consequently, the study suggested, among others, that political parties in Nigeria should be established on ideologies and not pecuniary benefits and primitive accumulation as it is being witnessed even in the current administration. Besides, being a member of a political party should not be determined by the collection of ticket to vie for elective political office.

Neo-Pentecostal political activism vis-a-vis good governance in Nigeria: A theological analysis

This article presented the Nigerian neo-Pentecostal political activism (NNPA) in the last two decades and its impact on good governance. A brief historical analysis shows that pulpit political activism (PPA) may have catalysed some civil actions by civil society, socio-cultural groups, adherents, and the masses; however, the resistance from the government may imply that the struggle is counterproductive. Subsequently, the situation calls for a theological examination of the activists’ praxis through the lens of three sub-theological disciplines, namely social gospel, political and public theologies. It is argued that the NNPA is neither based on any of the three theological sub-disciplines nor any other specific theology. Thus, this article upheld that where a struggle for good governance from a Christian perspective lacks a solid theological foundation, its approach may be counterproductive. The article then recommended the need for NNPA to evolve through a constructive theology with the adoption of some concepts from the three theological sub-disciplines, especially public theology.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: This article aligns with the scope of Verbum et Ecclesia as it created a conversation around dogmatic and historical theologies, socio-political interaction and African neo-Pentecostalism.

The Prospective Nexus between Constitutionalism, the Rule of Law and Democratic Good Governance: The Nigerian Experience

Nigeria could be described as having a constitutional government just like many other African countries. This paper therefore strives at assessing the impact of constitutionalism and the rule of law on good governance in Nigeria. In order to ensure good governance, it also analyses the elements and dynamics of constitutionalism and the rule of law by carefully asserting that every democratic government derives its legitimacy from its constitution. This paper adopts a doctrinal approach based on traceable variables in Nigeria that tend to militate against constitutionalism, the derivatives of constitutionalism, rule of law and democratic good governance. In spite of challenges militating working against its full entrenchment, this paper asserts that Nigeria’s constitutionalism is an ever evolving one and that there is a substantial connection between Nigeria’s constitutionalism, the rule of law and good governance. The implementation of true constitutionalism, the rule of law and democratic good governance in Nigeria is suggested in some broad terms.
