Advances in Lycium Barbarum Polysaccharide in the Prevention and Treatment of Ophthalmic Diseases

Lycium barbarum is the dried mature fruit of Ningxia wolfberry, family Solanaceae. Chinese medicine believes that wolfberry has the effect of nourishing the liver and kidney, benefiting the essence and brightening the eyes. Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) is a proteoglycan isolated from Chinese medicine goji berry, which is the most important active ingredient in goji berry extract, with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, anti-tumor, protection of the nervous system, protection of the retina, hypoglycemia, hypolipidemia, enhancement of immunity and other effects. In recent years, research results about LBP in the prevention and treatment of ophthalmic diseases have been emerging, such as cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration has a certain preventive and therapeutic effects. This paper analyzes and reviews the relevant literature on LBP in the prevention and treatment of ophthalmic diseases.

Dietary Supplementation for Retinitis Pigmentosa: A Report by the American Academy of Ophthalmology

To review the evidence on the effectiveness of dietary supplementation for retinitis pigmentosa (RP). A literature search of the PubMed database was last conducted in January 2024 to identify published English-language original research on dietary supplementation for RP. Eligible compounds included products ingested orally containing nutrients intended to supplement the diet. Studies meeting eligibility criteria were assigned a level of evidence rating by the panel methodologist. The search identified 283 citations, 15 of which met the assessment criteria. Two studies were rated level I, 11 studies were rated level II, and 2 studies were rated level III. All were single-center studies and were published between 1993 and 2022. The products evaluated included vitamin A, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), lutein, vitamin E, goji berry (Lycium barbarum fruit) extract, and chlorogenic acid. Primary outcome measures were most commonly based on electroretinography (n= 7) or perimetry (n= 2) testing. Numerous studies highlighted data suggestive of possible efficacy for vitamin A, DHA, and lutein, yet these findings typically derived from secondary outcomes, evaluations of participant subsets, post hoc analyses, problematic interpretations of the data, or a combination thereof. Additionally, it was often unclear if the study findings represented clinically meaningful outcomes. No prominent safety concerns were reported in any study. No high-quality evidence was found to support the effectiveness of any form of dietary supplementation for RP. The findings underscore the challenges of studying this rare and slowly progressive retinal disease. Future studies should leverage the enhanced recruitment abilities from collaborative research networks to refine eligibility criteria while using novel, clinically meaningful endpoints. Effect of Goji Berry extract on cell viability of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum M5 microcapsules during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion.

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum M5 and Goji Berry extract were co-microencapsulated to maintain the activity of cells during gastrointestinal digestion, and the mechanism by which they could maintain high activity was investigated. The results showed that the microcapsules with 3% Goji Berry extract(A-GE-3) had the largest encapsulation efficiency(EE) of 92.41 ± 0.58%. SEM showed that the structure of A-GE-3 microcapsules were smoother and denser. Cell viability in A-GE-3 microcapsules remained at 7.17 log10 CFU/g after gastrointestinal digestion. Meanwhile, during the gastrointestinal digestion with 3% Goji Berry extract, cell membrane damage detected by fluorescent probes propidium iodide(PI) and 1.1-N-phenylnaphthylamine(NPN) was significantly reduced; the contents of arginine, glutamic acid and oleic acid in cell membrane were increased, which helped to maintain the dynamic balance of intracellular pH and regulated cell membrane fluidity in response to gastrointestinal environment. This study demonstrated the potential of Goji Berry extract as a probiotic protector in gastrointestinal digestion.

Goji-Berry-Mediated Green Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles and Their Promising Effect on Reducing Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Experimental Hyperglycemia.

The present report focuses on a rapid and convenient method applicable in the green synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using goji berry (Lycium barbarum-LB) extracts rich in antioxidant compounds, as well as on the structural analysis and evaluation of the induced antioxidant protection and anti-inflammatory effects of the synthesized gold nanoparticles upon endothelial cells (HUVECs) exposed to hyperglycemia. The synthesized AuNPs were characterized using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), whereas the presence of bioactive compounds from the L. barbarum fruit extract on the surface of the nanoparticles was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The antioxidant activity of the biosynthesized gold nanoparticles was evaluated on the HUVEC cell line. The results reveal that AuNPs with a predominantly spherical shape and an average size of 30 nm were obtained. The UV-Vis spectrum showed a characteristic absorption band at λmax = 536 nm of AuNPs. FTIR analysis revealed the presence of phenolic acids, flavonoids and carotenoids acting as capping and stabilizing agents of AuNPs. Both the L. barbarum extract and AuNPs were well tolerated by HUVECs, increased the antioxidant defense and decreased the production of inflammatory cytokines induced via hyperglycemia-mediated oxidative damage.

The Usage OF Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry) Extract for Vison Related Problems and Empowerement OF Kidney’s Qi (Energy)

The study revealed that Goji Berry can help improving vision. However, more studies are needed to ensure an increase of the yield of the herb extract and to acquire a better understanding of its safety, pharmacokinetics, mechanisms of action, pathways of disposition, and therapeutic targets.

Encapsulation and antibacterial studies of goji berry and garlic extract in the biodegradable chitosan

As known, the chitosan is a biodegradable biopolymer with antibacterial properties, therefore it is used in the fields of pharmacy, medical, wastewater treatment, biotechnology, cosmetics, textiles, and agriculture. Apart from these, the chitosan has an important place in the food industry with its widespread use. In this research article, the chitosan were encapsulated with the taurine and garlic extracts by the spray dryer. The CSA and CSB compounds synthesized as final products were analyzed by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The effect of the encapsulation process on the molecular weight of the polymer structure was investigated using the cryoscopy method. The compound CSA represents 1/2 encapsulation of chitosan with taurine and increased garlic extracts, respectively, while CSB represents 1/1 encapsulation of chitosan with increased taurine and fixed garlic extracts. The % antioxidant activity of the final products was determined by DDPH method. The inhibition zone and surface activity proporties of the CSA and CSB were carried out against Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, and Salmonella bacteria. The results obtained as a result of the analyzes were evaluated, and optimum values were determined for use in food packaging.

An integrated strategy for thegeographical origin traceability of Goji berries by antioxidants characteristic fingerprint based online ultra-performance liquid chromatography-2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl- photodiode array detector-mass spectrometry combined with multivariate statistics analysis.

Goji berries are now becoming increasingly popular in the human diet due to their potential health benefits. Unscrupulous traders deliberately mislabel with certain origins to gain illegal profits, which seriously affected the consumers' benefits. In this study, an online ultra-performance liquid chromatography-2,2-diphenyl-1 -picrylhydrazyl-photodiode array detector-electrospray ionization-quadrupole time of flight mass was developed for rapid screening and identification of the antioxidants from Goji berry; then, the antioxidants characteristic fingerprint was established and explored in the origins discrimination of Goji berries from China combined with multivariate statistics analysis. As a result, twenty-eight compounds were screened from Goji berry extract, 19 of which were identified by accurate molecular and ultraviolet information according to references. Principal components analysis and partial least squares discrimination analysis achieved the accurate classification from the four regions, eight compounds were selected as origin-related antioxidant markers with variable importance in projection >1 and one-way analysis of variance (P<0.05), including rutin, rutin di-hexose, P-coumaric acid tri-hexose, dicaffeoylquinic acid isomer, Quercetin-rhamno-di-hexoside, peak14, peak16, and peak27. This study provides a feasible strategy for the geographical origins discrimination of Goji berries based on antioxidant ingredients difference and will be helpful for improving the quality control level of Goji berries.

Fabrication of molecular imprinting electrochemical sensor for determination of 2-O-(β-d-glucopyranosyl) ascorbic acid

2-O-(β-D-glucopyranosyl (AA2βG) is a natural component unique to Lycium barbarum (goji berry). The detection of its content can identify the quality of Goji berry extract and provide a new quality standard for Goji berry extract. Currently, there is only one report of electrochemical detection of AA2βG. Further improvement of electrochemical detection of AA2βG is necessary. Molecular imprinting polymer (MIP) is predetermined, identifiable and practical. The MIP-based electrochemical sensor has the advantages of high selectivity, fast response and easy operation. In this study, AuNPs and graphene composite was synthesized and modified the glassy carbon electrode, and 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) was self-assembled onto the AuNPs/GCE electrode surface by Au-S bonding, and then graphene was modified onto the electrode surface. 4-ATP and AA2βG were selected as the functional monomer and template molecule, respectively. Under optimal conditions, the sensor can achieve linear detection in the range of 100 nM to 10 μM and 10 μM to 100 μM, respectively. The detection limit can reach 27 nM.

Proporties and Synthesis of Biosilver Nanofilms for Antimicrobial Food Packaging.

In this original research, biodegradable corn starch (CS) and wheat gluten (wg)-based silver nanofilms were synthesized and analyzed by using goji berry extract taurine (ta), garlic extract (GC), whey powder (wh), and montmorillonite clay nanoparticles. Antibacterial-corn-starch-based nano films were analyzed by using the methods of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic and mechanical (DMA) analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the antibacterial resistances of the corn starch nano films against the bacteria Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Listeria monocytogenes were examined and the migration assays were carried out. The migration analysis results of CS1, CS2, and CS3 nanocomposite films were found as 0.305, 0.297, and 0.297 mg/dm2, respectively. The inhibition zone of CS1, CS2, and CS3 nanocomposite films were found as 1547, 386, and 1884 mm2 against Salmonella bacteria. The results show that silver nanofilms are suitable as packaging films for the production of packaging in milk and dairy products, liquid foods, and acidic foods.

Goji berry effects on hamburger quality during refrigerated display time

Research on natural additives to replace or reduce synthetic ones in meat products is still being highlighted. The effect of goji berry (GB) (extract, powder and incorporated in an edible coating) in hamburgers during 10 days of refrigerated (2 ºC) and illuminated (fluorescent lamp, 1200 lux, 12 h day-1) display were evaluated. Four treatments were studied: control (CONT) - hamburger without GB; GBEX - hamburger with GB extract, GBPW - hamburger with GB powder and GBEC - hamburger with GB edible coating. pH, color, water losses, shear force, total phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS assays) and lipid oxidation (TBARS) were evaluated. The use of GB positively affected the quality of hamburger during display and the coated samples presented better results, with reduced weight and color losses, lower pH, and shear force values. The inclusion of GB in hamburgers increased the antioxidant activity and inhibited lipid oxidation. GB has potential application in hamburgers to maintain or improve their characteristics during the shelf-life.

Determination of Shelf Life During Cold Storage of Fish Fingers Coated Addition of Goji Berry

The present study was aimed to evaluate shelf life of Pike Barbell (Luciobarbus esocinus Heckel, 1843) experimental samples of fish finger, that ordinarily packed and stored at 4±1°C. Together with the control group, three experimental groups fish finger were obtained with the addition of the goji berry extract into this content by 1% and 2%. According to the findings obtained in this study, it was concluded that fish fingers with goji berry addition had a positive effect on chemical, microbiological and sensory qualities and this study could also establish a basis for many scientific studies with the application of herbal extracts used in experimental samples on various fish products in more different concentration.

Predictive Evaluation of Microbiological Stability of Soft Drinks with Lycium barbarum L. Stored at Temperature Shifts.

Lycium barbarum L., used in Chinese traditional medicine for centuries, has gained popularity in Europe in the last decade because of its health-promoting properties assigned to phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. Goji fruits and extracts are often used as ingredients in popular homemade milk cocktails. Within this study, the microbiological stability of the milkshake, with the addition of berries from NingXia Province and their extract, was evaluated using the ComBase® prognostic model. The extraction of dry berries in water at 70 °C for 72 h produced an extract showing radical inhibition of 64.9% and a total phenol content of 63.6 mg g−1. The phenolic compounds with the highest concentrations were in turn: 3-hydroxybenzoic acid, gallic acid, procyanidin B2, and catechin. The milkshake inoculated with the reference B. subtilis was a model for the study of its microbiological stability. Using ComBase®, a microbiological response to the delayed cooling of goji berry extract and the milkshake with the addition of goji berries was predicted and the model’s accuracy assessed. The best-performing models were constructed for extract (Bias factor Bf 1.33, Accuracy factor Af 3.43) and milkshake (Bf 1.29, Af 1.65) in a profile simulating delayed refrigeration (22.5 °C–9 °C–23 °C). Despite discrepancies between predicted and observed bacterial growth due to the antimicrobial effect of the derivatives of goji berries, the models were validated as „overpredict”, i.e., „fail safe”, and may be used to prognose the stability of these products in the given temperature profile.

Photocatalytic degradation activity of goji berry extract synthesized silver-loaded mesoporous zinc oxide (Ag@ZnO) nanocomposites under simulated solar light irradiation

Different approaches have been developed for the synthesis of various nanostructured materials with unique morphologies. This study demonstrated the photocatalytic and antimicrobial abilities of silver-loaded zinc oxide nanocomposites (Ag@ZnO NCs). Initially, ZnO with a unique mesoporous ellipsoidal morphology in the size range of 0.59 ± 0.11 × 0.33 ± 0.09 µm (length × width) was synthesized using aqueous precipitation in a mild hydrothermal condition (80 °C) with the aqueous fruit extract of goji berry (GB) (as an additive) and calcined in air at 200 °C/2 h and 250 °C/3 h. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the formation of a hexagonal phase of the wurtzite (WZ) structure. The average crystallite size of ZnO was 23.74 ± 4.9 nm as calculated using Debye–Scherrer’s equation. It also possesses higher thermal stability with the surface area, pore volume, and pore size of 11.77 m2/g, 0.027 cm3/g, and 9.52 nm, respectively. Furthermore, different mesoporous Ag@ZnO NCs loaded with face-centered cubic (fcc) silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in the range of 90–160 nm were synthesized by GB extract as a reducing and capping agent on the surface of ZnO after calcination in air. The immobilization of Ag NPs was confirmed by XRD, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), FE-transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). It was found that Ag0.2@ZnO NC (0.2 wt% of Ag) showed excellent photocatalytic degradation of both methylene blue (MB) (cationic) and congo red (CR) (anionic) dyes under simulated solar irradiation. The photocatalytic degradation of 99.3 ± 0.35% MB and 98.5 ± 1.3% CR occurred in 90 and 55 min, respectively, at room temperature by Ag0.2@ZnO NC. Besides, these NCs also showed broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The mechanistic concept of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) by electron and hole charge (e‾/h+) carriers seems to be responsible for the photocatalytic degradation of commercial dyes and antibacterial activities by Ag@ZnO NCs. Thus, these silver-loaded mesoporous ellipsoidal ZnO NCs are promising candidates as photocatalysts for industrial/wastewater treatment as well as in antimicrobial therapeutics.

Increasing RG-I content and lipase inhibitory activity of pectic polysaccharides extracted from goji berry and raspberry by high-pressure processing

The impact of high-pressure processing (HPP) extraction on the structural, rheological, and functional properties of goji berry and raspberry pectic polysaccharides were investigated under acidic and alkaline conditions. These properties were compared with those of pectic polysaccharides extracted by conventional hot-acid and cold-alkali methods. Extraction yield, molecular weight, rheological behavior, and antioxidant activity of pectic extracts depended on the source materials of extraction. The solvent pH was the driving factor for the degree of esterification, as revealed by NMR and FTIR analysis. Monosaccharide composition was the primary variable between the extracts. The hot-acid extraction led to the highest galacturonic acid (GalA) contents, 46.9% for goji berry and 65.2% for raspberry, indicating the prevalence of homogalacturonans (HG) regions. HPP-assisted acidic/alkaline extractions gave rise to higher rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) regions, pointing to the prevalence of hairy regions. The antioxidant activity of raspberry extracts was significantly (P ≤ 0.05) higher than goji berry extracts. The higher amount of RG-I may determine the higher antioxidant activity of raspberry pectic polysaccharides. The correlation between structural parameters and the lipase inhibitory activity also revealed that the higher lipase inhibitory activity of pectic polysaccharides is mostly correlated with the higher content of RG-I (r = 0.9259, P = 0.00033). Thus, HPP-assisted extraction may intensify the lipase inhibitory activity of pectic polysaccharides by increasing their RG-I content.

Inhibition Efficiency of Goji Berry Extract Against the Corrosion of Carbon Steel SAE 1045

Corrosion degrades the surface of metals. Therefore, extracts of natural products are tested as possible corrosion inhibitors, in order to delay or inhibit such processes. These inhibitory substances can act via adsorption, forming a thin protective film that inhibits the anode and/or cathode processes on the surface. This study aimed to test the inhibitory efficiency of goji berry extract (GB) in the corrosion of SAE 1045 carbon steel. The extract was prepared by hydroethanolic extraction and was diluted with 0.5 mol L-1 NaCl electrolyte, for electrochemistry tests. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and anodic potentiodynamic polarization tests showed that the metal is more resistant to corrosion in the presence of the GB, because higher values of impedance and lower values of current density were obtained in the presence of the GB; the scanning electron microscopy data corroborated the electrochemical test results. HSF-1 and SIR-2.1 linked insulin-like signaling is involved in goji berry (Lycium spp.) extracts promoting lifespan extension of Caenorhabditis elegans.

The anti-cancer, vision-improving, and reproduction-enhancing effects of goji berry have been generally recognized, but its role in anti-aging is rarely studied in depth. Therefore, two widely-circulated goji berries, Lycium ruthenicum Murr. (LRM) and Lycium Barbarum. L (LB), were selected to explore their effects on extending lifespan and enhancing defense against extrinsic stress and to uncover the mechanism of action through genetic study. The results showed that supplementation with high-dose LRM (10 mg mL-1) and LB (100 mg mL-1) extracts significantly extended the lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) by 25.19% and 51.38%, respectively, accompanied by the improved stress tolerance of C. elegans to paraquat-induced oxidation, UV-B irradiation and heat shock. Furthermore, LRM and LB extracts remarkably enhanced the activities of antioxidant enzymes including SOD and CAT in C. elegans, while notably decreased the lipofuscin level. Further genetic research demonstrated that the expression levels of key genes daf-16, sod-2, sod-3, sir-2.1 and hsp-16.2 in C. elegans were up-regulated by the intervention with LRM and LB, while that of the age-1 level was down-regulated. Moreover, the daf-16 (mu86) I, sir-2.1 (ok434) IV and hsf-1 (sy441) I mutants reversed the longevity effect brought about by LRM or LB, which confirmed that these genes were required in goji berry-mediated lifespan extension. Therefore, we conclude that HSF-1 and SIR-2.1 act collaboratively with the insulin/IGF signaling pathway (IIS) in a daf-16-independent mode. The present study indicated goji berry as a potential functional food to alleviate the symptoms of aging.

Chia musilage coating: Applications with gojiberry extract for shelf life extension of Oncorhynchus mykiss and it's antibacterial and oxidative effects

The present study was carried out to evaluate chia mucilage coating and goji berry extract as preservative agents in filleted trout during storage for 18 days at 4℃. The trout fillets were separated into four lots and applied the following treatments by immersion processing: I) Control (without coating), II) Chia (Ch), III) Chia + 1% Goji berry extract (Ch + 1GE), and IV) Chia + 2% Goji berry extract (Ch + 2GE), then stored for 18 days at 4°C. Results demonstrated that microbial growth was delayed in 2%GE containing chia coated group. In addition, the chia coated samples retarded the increase in the contents of TVB-N, pH, and TBA during storage. In addition, shelf life of the samples stored at 4ºC was determined as 3 days in control group, 15 days in groups of coated with Ch and Ch+1%GE and 18 days in group of coated with Ch+2% GE. Practical applications Quality of rainbow trout fillets was keeped by edible coating formed from chia seed musilage With the prepared coatings were inhibed oxidation and microbial growht during fillet storage. A high shelf life was determined by the coatings formulated with 1% gojiberry extract and 2% gojiberry extract. Chia musilage coating may be an alternative to other coatings in the coating of meat and meat products.

Chemical Characterization, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties of Goji Berries Cultivated in Serbia.

Since the fruits of Lycium L. species (Fructus lycii, goji berries) are promoted as a “superfood” with plenty of health benefits, there is extensive research interest in their nutritional and phytochemical composition. In the present study, the nutritional value, minerals, fatty acid composition, and bioactive compounds of L. barbarum L., red, yellow, and black goji berry (L. ruthenicum Murray.) cultivated in Serbia were investigated. Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of their methanol extracts were assessed. Red goji berry had the highest content of fats, dietary fiber, iron, total carotenoids, and 2-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-l-ascorbic acid (AA-2βG). The yellow goji berry extract showed the highest level of flavonoids and the most prominent antimicrobial (especially against Gram-negative bacteria) properties. The highest total phenolic content and the most potent antioxidant activity were observed for the extract of black goji berry. Therefore, all goji berries could be a valuable source of bioactive compounds in the food and pharmaceutical industry.

Fish and fish products are important parts of the human diet, but microbial, chemical, and sensory deteriorations limit their shelf life. In recent studies, edible coatings and their use with plant extracts constituted one of the main procedures to extend the shelf life of fish and increase the sensory quality. In this study, the effect of chia coating containing 1% gojiberry extract on the sensory quality (color, odor, taste, general acceptibilty) of Oncorhynchus mykiss fish fillets during refrigerated storage was evaluated. The results revealed that the Chia mucilage (CM) and Chia mucilage + Gojiberry extract (CMG) coating of the fish fillets showed high acceptability in all sensory properties during storage. It can be concluded that the use of gojiberry extract with chia mucilage coating can improve the sensory quality for trout fillets for up to 18 days at 4˚C.
