MAIN TASKS OF THE UNIVERSITY DURING THE RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN WAR

B a c k g r o u n d . This article explores the tasks and goal of university education in Ukraine during the war. The role of the University in the field of education and public life during the russian-Ukrainian war is outlined. The educational sector is going through significant challenges along with Ukraine in the context of the military operations. Therefore, the university community is actively involved in the struggle and not only on the educational front. The article is particularly addressing the following questions: what are the challenges that universities face in times of war?; how can university education continue under the circumstances of war?; what are the main tasks of university education for this period?; what are the new tasks that the University is facing today compared to the original tasks at the moment of the emergence of universities?; The article also demonstrates the transformation of university education from the time of the coronavirus pandemic to the moment of russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Met hod s. The research methodology includes general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis. Method of situational analysis is also adopted within the methodology. The article uses an analytical approach based on the study of historical and philosophical sources. R e s u l t s. It is evident that Ukrainian universities despite the circumstances of war still operate as centers of education, train highly qualified professionals, develop science, and raise a new generation of scholars. University as an institution keeps cultivating an average person into a cultured one. We mean that the University preserves and transmits to young generations the culture of the Ukrainian national spirit in times of war. C o n c l u s i o n s. The article proves that the University, in such a difficult time of war, is forming the contemporary culture of Ukraine. This contemporary culture is created by the inseparable unity of two guilds: those who teach and those who study. So we are witnessing the realization of a new, glorious history of Ukraine, and the University is actively contributing to it. After all, Ukrainians are united by belonging to a great culture, and nowadays this culture manifests itself in the greatness of the national spirit that the Ukrainian people demonstrate.

The Basque and Catalan questions since 1980

Our contemporary age is one where national identity retains important salience which can partly facilitate explanation. Teaching the Basque and Catalan questions since 1980 to British university students poses a number of challenges to educators. Themes that emerge in teaching about these political conflicts in Spain include state violence, terrorism, nationalism and social movements, minority languages and immigration. Some issues are more complex than others to consider particularly those around political violence and terrorism. However potentially sensitive material does not mean it cannot be tackled. This was a course that sought to demonstrate that questions of identity are contingent and continually subject to re-creation and re-interpretation. The goal of university education should be to explain why these disputes and their causation are contested and inseparable from historically inflected political framing.

Ioannikii Malynovskyi as an Enlightener of the History of Law

Aim. The purpose of the study is to research the career of Professor Ioannikii Malynovskyi in higher education, his contribution to its development, the goals of the university education. Methods. In the study several different methods were used in the system and interaction. A dialectical method, which boils down to the fact that all phenomena in society have a beginning and an end. The historical method was used to take into account historical traditions, socio-cultural roots of the state and law. A logical-semantic method was also used to help define the conceptual apparatus used in the study. Formal-legal method was used to analyse and disclose legal concepts. Results. The research showed that Malynovskyi conducted scientific researches in the chosen field and by getting acquainted with the heritage of national and world culture. The professor made considerable efforts in education to democratise higher education, in particular, by admitting women to higher education in Western Siberia. He defined the goals of university teaching: 1) to learn to acquire knowledge, the method of scientific research and, 2) to get acquainted with the current state of science. The scientist was the first to create a chronologically consistent, comprehensive subject course on the history of Rus’ law. Conclusions. Malynovskyi’s contribution to the democratisation of higher education already belongs to history, but his scientifically based recommendations on the goals of university education and means of achieving it are not without relevance today, but especially on the practical side in training future legal practitioners which are topical for today.

Миссия массмедиа в психологическом просвещении населения и медиатизации научно-образовательной деятельности вуза (на примере Регионального Центра практической психологии Саратовского государственного университета)

This article is looking into mass media’s missions in people’s psychological education on the example of media projects of the Center of Practical Psychology of the Saratov State University. It outlines two leading directions in arranging the center’s practical activities: the first one is directly related to psychological assistance and support rendered to people; the second one is focused on personal and professional development and self-improvement of university students, on shaping a developing educational environment that contributes to the disclosure of students’ potential personality resources and students’ increased involvement in university life, in communication with fellow students, teachers, and university staff. At the same time, the second direction is directly related to implementing the goals of university education aiming at mediatization of the scientific and educational activities of the university. The author actualizes the practical significance of mass media in psychological education and supporting people in conditions of increasing stress. Highlighted here are the theoretical prerequisites for the controversial nature of the issue of mass media’s positive missions and in particular, the use of the media’s psychotherapeutic potential in order to reduce and minimize the negative effects of not only the mass media themselves, but also the consequences of crises.

Enhancing generic capabilities and metacognitive awareness of first-year nursing students using active learning strategy

BackgroundDeveloping students’ generic capabilities is a major goal of university education as it can help to equip students with life-long learning skills and promote holistic personal development. However, traditional didactic teaching has not been very successful in achieving this aim. Kember and Leung’s Teaching and Learning Model suggests an interactive learning environment has a strong impact on developing students’ generic capabilities. Metacognitive awareness is also known to be related to generic capability development. This study aimed to assess changes on the development of generic capabilities and metacognitive awareness after the introduction of active learning strategy among nursing students.MethodsThis study adopted a quasi-experimental single group, matched pre- and posttest design. It was conducted in a school of nursing at a university in Hong Kong. Active learning approaches included the flipped classroom (an emphasis on pre-reading) and enhanced lectures (the breaking down of a long lecture into several mini-lectures and supplemented by interactive learning activities) were introduced in a foundational nursing course. The Capabilities Subscale of the Student Engagement Questionnaire and the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory were administered to two hundred students at the start (T0) and at the end of the course (T1). A paired t-test was performed to examine the changes in general capabilities and metacognitive awareness between T0 and T1.ResultsA total of 139 paired pre- and post-study responses (69.5 %) were received. Significant improvements were observed in the critical thinking (p < 0.001), creative thinking (p = 0.03), problem-solving (p < 0.001) and communication skills (p = 0.04) with the implementation of active learning. Significant changes were also observed in knowledge of cognition (p < 0.001) and regulation of cognition (p < 0.001) in the metacognitive awareness scales.ConclusionsActive learning is a novel and effective teaching approach that can be applied in the nursing education field. It has great potential to enhance students’ development of generic capabilities and metacognitive awareness.

Психолого-педагогические аспекты физического воспитания студентов

The article is devoted to the systematization of psychological and pedagogical aspects of physical education of students. It is determined that the analysis and generalization of measurements of physical education, methods, principles and approaches used to study the functioning of the methodological system, makes it possible to identify to a certain extent the state of health, physical tness and all other parameters that affect the nal result of educational activities and physical education. It is established that the methodical system of physical education should be considered as a large and complex system containing a signi cant number of components and subsystems that require a certain and stable orderliness and rational management based on the purpose, objectives and content of physical education. In addition, this system should establish optimal connections of the educational process in order to ensure their reasonable and rational functioning and development. From these positions, the main goal of university education is the formation of an integral structure of the student's future activity during his/her studies.

Class of Degree and Postgraduate Students’ Performance in a Nigerian University

Aims: University education remains the engine tower of development in any country. In the realization of this, goals of university education and strategies to achieve them were clearly spelt out in the Nigeria National Policy on Education. Some employers of labour have been lamenting on the poor quality of Nigerian graduates despite that some of them came out with good grades. Class of degree speaks volume in the employment and admission criteria of this country. The thrust of this paper therefore is to examine the influence of class of degree on postgraduate students’ performance.&#x0D; Study Design: The study adopted descriptive research design of the survey type.&#x0D; Place and Duration of Study: The population comprised all the entire masters’ students that graduated from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria between 2015/2016 and 2018/2019 sessions.&#x0D; Methodology: Proportional stratified random sampling technique was used to select one hundred and eighty nine (189) masters’ graduates from the six faculties of the university. Simple percentage, bar chart and Analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for data analysis.&#x0D; Results: Finding showed that: (i) There is no significant difference in the performance of postgraduate students in course work based on class of degrees (F2,1860.05 = 0.527, p = 0.492 &gt;0.05). (ii) There is no significant difference in the performance of postgraduate students in dissertation based on class of degrees (F2,1860.05 = 2.697, p = 0.070 &gt;0.05).&#x0D; Conclusion: Class of degree at undergraduate level has nothing to do with postgraduate students’ performance at postgraduate level. It was recommended that class of degree at undergraduate level should not be solely used to select candidates for admission into postgraduate programmes. Multiple measures should be adopted.

<p class="ql-align-justify">Critical thinking is the key to success in business entities. In business literature, critical thinking is regarded as a conscious activity that includes comment, analysis, assessment and deduction in decision making. It is accepted that critical thinking plays a very important role in economics and higher education. The reason for this is that the goal of university education is to provide an intellectual professional education, not a stereotyped and standardized one. In other words, the aim shall be enhancing professional aptitude and professional skills. Business life has also changed and demands flexibility. In todays’s work environment, graduates are expected to be equipped with professional knowledge and scientific method information, in other words, they should have learned “critical thinking”. The purpose of this study is to demontrate the importance of critical thinking in economics and higher education, in particular in cost accounting courses.

The goal of university education in Philology is not only to provide students with a certain system of knowledge and develop professional skills in them but also to equip learners with the techniques of independent research. Considering a limited number of publications on teaching classical languages and organization of students’ independent work on learning the syntax of ancient Greek, the author addresses linguistic and pedagogical aspects of organization of independent work of Philology majors in teaching apophatic constructions in ancient Greek. Purpose. The article aims at giving insight into organization of independent work of Philology majors on learning apophatic constructions in the syntax of ancient Greek and analyzing the dependence of the use of apophatic models on the functional semantics of noun and verb forms. Results and discussion. The analysis of literature on teaching classical languages and organization of students’ independent work in learning ancient Greek has enabled outlining the features of independent work of Philology majors in learning apophatic constructions in syntax of ancient Greek at different stages and allowed compiling a range of tasks on determining the influence of the syntax on the choice of apophatic model in prose and poetic texts of ancient Greek. Further research might involve experimental testing of the effectiveness of the developed model of the students’ independent work in teaching the syntax of ancient Greek

Taylor's Crisis on Campus, and its critique of the structure and delivery of contemporary higher education, this essay argues that if there is a crisis in education, it is not technical, not reducible to the delivery of education. If there is a crisis, it lies in the contemporary world's misunderstanding of the goals or ends of the university. Borrowing Antonin's Sertillanges’ account of reading from the Intellectual Life, the essay concludes by suggesting that the goal of university education is formation of the mind, not mastery, edification, of entertainment.

The expansion of University Education in Nigeria and resultant managerial problems

University education came to Nigeria for the first time when the first university college was established at Ibadan in 1948. Since then there has been rapid growth and expansion of universities across the country. The expansion of universities has created management problems in enrolment, staffing, funding, material/facilities, etc. This study is designed to examine the extent and gravity of these problems. The study emphasizes the need to increase the number of universities to satisfy the desires of Nigerian youths to obtain university degrees. It also stresses the need for adequate funding to eliminate problems of financing in order to enhance the provision of facilities and qualitative staffing for effective teaching to achieve the goals of university education. Commotion at the Sorbonne: the debate on the French University, 1910–1914

In the summer of 1910 the Paris weekly L'Opinion published a series of articles that severely criticized the University of Paris. This was the beginning of an intense debate on the nature and goals of university education. The meaning and limits of scientific knowledge and research were also discussed. There was a nationalistic side to the argument as well, as the Sorbonne was attacked for following the German model. The debate is still interesting, because it raises various issues of the relationship between university and society.
