Indonesian governance: Reflections and how to reduce disparity between regencies/cities in Indonesia

Nawacita work program of Indonesian Governance aims to actualize a golden Indonesia by 2045 by accelerating development and human resources. However, the Indonesian people face several difficult problems of their own. Several strategic policies have been put into place in Indonesia to promote fair development and lessen regional differences. These policies include macroeconomic management, economic deregulation, the development of new resources economically, the maritime economy, and productivity enhancement. The Nawacita program’s reflection in addressing regional imbalances in Indonesian regencies and cities is covered in this report. This study employs quantitative and bibliographic techniques along with political economic analysis methodologies to investigate in-depth and information. The study’s findings indicate that although differences between Indonesia’s districts and cities are gradually narrowing, the country’s GDP per capita is still below the global average. Most of the strategic measures put in place by the Indonesian Governance have not resulted in the anticipated expansion of the economy. Nonetheless, in current period of government, connectivity in enhancing productivity across regions through Indonesia centric development is a primary objective to ease accessibility between areas, which has frequently been disregarded. particularly in the Papua region, which has not exactly developed and been left behind. According to the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) analysis’s findings, increasing productivity is a task that needs to be finished right now to lessen regional differences in Indonesia.

Calibrated Eckhardt’s filter versus alternative baseflow separation methods: A silica-based approach in a Brazilian catchment

The Eckhardt’s filter, a recursive digital filter widely used in hydrology to separate baseflow, relies on two parameters: the recession constant (a) and the maximum allowable long-term ratio of baseflow to streamflow (BFImax). While a can be determined through regression analyses, BFImax is often assigned an arbitrary value because of limited catchment information for a more objective determination. This study aimed to assess and calibrate BFImax for a 1.2 km2 rural catchment in southern Brazil using dissolved silica data. Calibration involved minimizing differences between filter-generated baseflow hydrographs and those derived from dissolved silica measurements and mass balance across 13 monitored rainfall-runoff events. The calibrated model was compared to three established models: a modified graphical method based on local minima, a backward filter model, and a one-parameter filter. The results yielded an optimal BFImax of 0.653 with high model performance (PBias ≈ 0, NSE = 0.85, KGE = 0.74, and NRMSD = 13 %) against silica-derived baseflow. Applying the calibrated filter to a six-year streamflow dataset yielded a long-term baseflow index (BFI) value of 54 %, aligned with regional and global averages. Comparisons with other models showed that the backward filter model produced unrealistic baseflow values nearly identical to streamflow values; the local minima method overestimated baseflow by +19 % and failed to accurately represent the smoothness and peaks of the baseflow hydrographs; and the one-parameter filter represented the shape and timing of the baseflow hydrographs well, but underestimated magnitude by −19 %. These findings validate the effectiveness of the Eckhardt’s filter in generating accurate baseflow hydrographs and confirm the importance of calibrating BFImax for optimal performance. The research also endorses the use of dissolved silica measurements and the mass balance method as a reliable approach for calibrating BFImax for long-term assessment of baseflows.

Tiered maize and wheat nutrient removal coefficients estimated from available data

AbstractEstimates of cropland nutrient budgets at national to global scale generally rely on regional or global mean coefficients for quantifying nutrients removed in crop yield and by-products. Use of such mean values masks the variability in these coefficients. Using maize and wheat as examples, we assessed variation in nutrient removal coefficients, namely harvest index (HI), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) concentrations of crop products (Grain N, Grain P and Grain K respectively) and N, P and K concentrations of crop residues (Residue N, Residue P, and Residue K respectively). Variation in these coefficients was assessed by three categories (Tiers) of estimation. Statistical (mixed-effects) and machine learning (random forest regression) models (Tier 3) were used to predict the coefficients using generally available predictor variables at a global level. Mean prediction accuracies (R2) of the mixed-effects and random forest models were 0.32 for maize coefficients and 0.45 for wheat coefficients when based on a random sub-selection of mainly replicated field experiment data. When predictions were applied to on-farm data only, prediction accuracies were lower (mean R2 values of 0.08 and 0.36 for maize and wheat respectively). Variation in, and dearth of on-farm data for the coefficients contributed to these poor prediction accuracies. Until the limitations of on-farm data are overcome, it is recommended to use Tier 2 (regional) coefficient estimates in country and global cropland nutrient balance and nutrient use efficiency estimates. Where Tier 2 values are not available, then global average (Tier 1) coefficients can be used.

Pioneering study of radioactivity in soil near the Payra 1320 MW Thermal Power Plant, the largest coal-fired thermal power plant in Bangladesh

ABSTRACT Coal combustion increases atmospheric radioactivity, harming those live in the periphery of coal-fired thermal power plants (CFTPPs). A pioneering study has been performed using a high-purity germanium detector by analysing 30 soil samples collected from distances of 50, 600, 1200, and 3000 metres in the periphery of the largest 1320 MW CFTPP, Payra, Bangladesh. The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K ranged from 19–32, 31–90, and 420–870 Bq/kg, respectively, with most of the samples show 232Th and 40K levels above global averages. Elevated levels of 232Th and 40K in soil around Payra thermal power plant stem from natural minerals, granitic rocks, ash disposal, coal combustion residues, and environmental factors. Radiological hazard indices, including dose rates and cancer risk, exceed global averages, indicating unsafe radiation exposure for coal miners and locals. These findings are crucial for planning coal-fired power plants and stress the need for municipal regulation of fly ash and health monitoring to mitigate risks for workers and residents.

Assessing the Effects of Citizen Climate Literacy and Attitudes on Their ‘Greening’ Behaviour in a Climate Change Hotspot Region of the Eastern Mediterranean

Climate change presents an urgent global challenge, manifesting in rising temperatures and extreme weather events with severe societal impacts. The Eastern Mediterranean, warming faster than the global average, faces immediate repercussions. Climate literacy emerges as pivotal, empowering individuals to comprehend climate science and act accordingly. This study delves into climate literacy, attitudes, and ‘greening’ behaviours in the Eastern Mediterranean hotspot of Greece, based on a survey of 1962 citizens. Findings indicate high climate literacy but lower adoption of ‘greening’ behaviours, especially those involving financial costs. Regression analyses highlight the significant role of climate literacy, concerns about personal impacts, coping appraisal, and trust in institutions in promoting ‘greening’ behaviours. This study underscores the need for multifaceted strategies emphasising financial motivation, trust-building, and societal norm shifts. Socio-demographic disparities, including gender and occupation, highlight areas for targeted interventions. The emphasis on the mental health impacts of climate-related events underscores the need for comprehensive disaster management that addresses not only physical damage but also psychological and social dimensions. Policy implications are discussed, highlighting the potential of expanded climate literacy to catalyse collective action toward sustainability.

Enhancing Professional Development for Science Teachers in Selected Elementary Schools in Suakoko Town, Bong County, Liberia

This paper probes into the multifaceted issues surrounding violence against women and challenges to girls' education in Liberia. Coomaraswamy's 2002 research underscored the role of cultural behaviors in family structures contributing significantly to violence against women. King and Winthrop's 2015 study explored factors such as poverty, gender norms, and cultural expectations, contributing to discussions on fair educational opportunities. Cunningham et al.'s 2023 research delved into gender disparities across economic, educational, healthcare, and political spheres, employing a women's empowerment perspective. Theoretical frameworks rooted in gender and social norm theories were employed to understand the impact of cultural identity on preschool girls' education in Liberia. The study focused on evaluating negative effects on preschool girls in Bong, Lofa, and Nimba counties, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to create a supportive environment. Coomaraswamy's 2002 insistence on rejecting the use of cultural considerations to justify violence against girls resonates globally. The study also highlighted disparities in girls' primary school enrollment rates in the region compared to the global average, emphasizing the urgency of addressing educational inequalities. Overall, this paper contributes valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and communities, advocating for positive change in Liberia's educational landscape and women's empowerment.

Seawater temperature drives the diversity of key cyanobacteria (Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus) in a warming sea

The picocyanobacteria genera Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus play a significant role globally, dominating the primary production in warm and oligotrophic tropical and subtropical areas, which represent the largest oceanic ecosystem. Genomic studies have revealed high microdiversity within these genera. It is anticipated that ocean warming may cause decreased biodiversity in marine tropical areas, as increasing temperatures may lead to the development of a new thermal niche in these regions. Thus, our study aimed to characterize the microdiversity of picocyanobacteria in the Red Sea, one of the warmest oligotrophic seas on the planet, which is experiencing warming at a rate that exceeds the global average. We identified picocyanobacteria microdiversity in the open waters of the Eastern Red Sea basin, where seawater temperatures ranged from 22.2 to 32.4°C throughout the water column (from surface to 160 m depth). Both Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus populations were characterized to deep taxonomic levels, applying amplicon sequencing targeting the petB gene, revealing up to 15 different (sub)clades. Synechococcus dominated the basin, representing an average of 68.8% of the total reads assigned to both cyanobacteria. The subclade Synechococcus IIa and Prochlorococcus clade HLII were ubiquitous in the water column of the Eastern Red Sea basin, representing 73% and 56% of the Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus assigned reads, respectively. Maximum cyanobacteria richness was observed at approximately 27.5°C, declining at higher and lower temperatures (polynomial fit, R2 = 0.2, p<0.0001). Synechococcus IIa dominated in the warmest surface waters (>30°C) of the Red Sea, displacing other (sub)clades to more saline and nutrient-poor waters, thereby reducing community diversity (polynomial fit, R2 = 0.77, p<0.0001). Our study contributes to identifying changes in picocyanobacterial diversity when exposed to temperatures exceeding current oceanic thermal limits, through the analysis of Red Sea communities already inhabiting such higher-temperature niches.

Investigation of radioactivity and heavy metal levels in soil samples from neutral and vegetation land of Punjab, India.

In this work, radioactivity investigations of soil samples from neutral and agricultural sites in Punjab (India) have been carried out to study the impact of land use patterns. Analyzing soil samples radiological, mineralogical, and physicochemical attributes has employed state-of-the-art techniques. The mean activity concentration of 238U/226Ra, 232Th, 40K, 235U, and 137Cs, measured using a carbon fiber endcap p-type HPGe detector, in neutral land was observed as 58.03, 83.95, 445.18, 2.83, and 1.16Bqkg-1, respectively. However, in vegetation land, it was found to be 40.07, 64.68, 596.74, 2.26, and 1.90Bqkg-1, respectively. In the detailed activity analysis, radium equivalent (Raeq) radioactivity is in the safe prescribed limit of 370Bqkg-1 for all investigated soil samples. However, the dosimetric investigations revealed that the outdoor absorbed gamma dose rate (96.08 nGy h-1) and consequent annual effective dose rate (0.12mSv y-1) for neutral land and the gamma dose rate (82.46 nGy h-1) and subsequent annual effective dose rate (0.10mSv y-1) for vegetation land marginally exceeded the global average. The soil's physicochemical parameters (pH, EC, and porosity) from both sites were measured, and their correlations with radionuclides were analyzed. Various heavy metals of health concern, namely, chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn), were also evaluated in soil samples using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Pollution Load Index (PLI) and Ecological Risk Index (RI) revealed that vegetation land was more anthropogenically contaminated than neutral land, with maximum contamination from Hg and As.

Modeling and significance assessment of road construction participant and user benefits using expert evaluation methods

Human activities are related to obtain economic, technical, social and environmental benefits. The road construction process participants and road users have direct or indirect benefits from elaboration of new infrastructure. The number of the benefits received by individual entities is publicly discussed by politicians, lobbyists, experts and other decision-makers without having quantitative estimates of benefits, i.e., often relying on intuition or considering theoretical reasoning. The paper suggests a system of 19 benefit entities (criteria) assigned the ranks given by experts. The study involved three categories of experts, including 35 road engineers, 36 transport engineers and 61 road users. The values of the concordance coefficients obtained as a result of the conducted research were found significantly higher than critical values and showed that the opinions of the experts in each category were consistent (not contradictory). This made it possible to consider the average of the opinions of the expert group as a reliable result of solving the problem. Rank averages were replaced by the normalized weights of criteria using Average Rank Transformation into Weight-Linear (ARTIW-L) and – Nonlinear (ARTIW-N) methods. The global averages of criterion weights were used employing the Inverse Hierarchy for Assessment Main Criteria Importance (IHAMCI) method thus calculating the normalized weights of the road-related classified entities (three main criteria). The findings prove that road users benefit the most (weight 0.3485), the road construction contractor (weight 0.3325) is in the next position and the road owner (investor) takes the weight equal to 0.3190. The generated research data can be used for justifying the rationality of road investment.

The predictive value of study orientations on mathematics performance in South African Grade 9 learners

Mathematics achievement is core to South Africa’s readiness for digital innovation, yet current pass rates in this subject are below the global average. Simply attributing mathematics performance to intelligence does not fully account for the multifaceted reality of achievement in the subject. The current study investigated the value of both cognitive and behavioural factors in predicting mathematics performance, as well as explored the interactions between these factors. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed. Grade 9 learners (N = 187) completed the Ravens’ Standard Progressive Matrices and the Study Orientation towards Mathematics assessments to establish their fluid intelligence, study attitude, mathematics anxiety, study habits, problem-solving behaviours and study milieu. Pearson correlation coefficients established the relationships between fluid intelligence, study orientations towards mathematics, and mathematics marks. These factors were also included in a linear regression and dominance analysis to compare their relative weights in influencing mathematics performance. Study attitude and fluid intelligence were found to be the most dominant, significant factors in the model, which explained 39% of the total variance (R2 = 0.390, F(6, 180), = 19.2, p 0.001). Moderator regressions between fluid intelligence and each of the study orientations further found that fluid intelligence and study orientations, with the exception of study milieu, independently influence mathematics performance.Contribution: This study proposes that educators and parents should support curriculum change that encourages positive attitudes towards mathematics and create supportive environments conducive to effective learning, rather than blaming a lack of cognitive potential for the disappointing mathematics pass rate.

Factory Logistics Improvement: A Case Study Analysis of Companies in Northern Thailand, 2022–2024

Background: Thailand’s logistics costs significantly exceed global averages. This study examines the novel application of a triple-helix model in factory logistics improvement projects in Northern Thailand from 2022 to 2024, addressing industrial logistics inefficiencies. Methods: The project involved 30 factories across various sectors, employing a case study methodology to analyze improvement initiatives in transportation, warehouse/inventory management, and logistics administration. Results: Transportation management interventions yielded up to 25% cost savings and improved delivery performance. Warehouse and inventory management upgrades led to inventory cost reductions of up to 55%. Logistics administrative improvements resulted in up to 20% cost savings and enhanced planning capabilities. Conclusions: The project demonstrates the effectiveness of the triple-helix model in facilitating knowledge transfer and practical improvements in industrial logistics. These findings are valuable for Thai industries, policymakers, and logistics managers globally, offering a blueprint for similar initiatives in developing economies. The success of this approach provides practical insights for optimizing logistics operations, potentially benefiting supply chain stakeholders, economic planners, and researchers seeking to enhance logistics efficiency and reduce costs in various industrial contexts.

The burden of liver cancer in Mongolia from 1990-2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

Liver cancer remains the leading cause of death and public health threat among the Mongolian population. So far, there has been no in-depth analysis to describe the burden of common attributable factors to liver cancer in Mongolia. Therefore, we aimed to explore the most prevalent causes of liver cancer and its trends from 1990 to 2019. We extracted the primary liver cancer data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 to examine the mortality and morbidity of liver cancer by its etiological types, which included alcohol, viral hepatitis B and C, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The data was extracted by sex and 5-year age intervals from 1990 to 2019. Data included mortality, incidence, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of liver cancer among the Mongolian population. Mongolia had the world's highest age-standardized DALYs for liver cancer (2558.1) in 2019. Alcohol-attributable DALYs (786.6) were 29 times higher than the global average (26.1), and liver cancer due to hepatitis C (752.6) and B (763.2) were 21.5 (35.0) and 10.9 (69.1) times higher, respectively. Over the past 30 years, there has been a steady increase in the incidence and number of deaths caused by liver cancer in Mongolia. In 2019, liver cancer incidence due to alcohol consumption was 3.1 times higher for males than females, and hepatitis B was 2.7 times higher for males than females. However, the incidence of hepatitis C and NASH were slightly higher for females. Deaths from liver cancer accounted for 9.51% (2365) of total deaths in Mongolia in 2019, with a continuously increasing trend in the fraction of death compared to 1990, which was 11 times higher than the global average (0.86%), particularly in females with a 319.6% (95% UI 234.9-435.7) increase observed during the study period. Liver cancer due to hepatitis B, C, and alcohol each shared about one-third of liver cancer deaths. A comprehensive analysis of the burden of liver cancer in Mongolia reveals alcohol use as a primary cause of liver cancer mortality, particularly affecting men and significantly impacting the disease burden. Viral hepatitis continues to pose a major public health concern in the country. Although significant milestones have progressed, addressing the unique demographic and geographical challenges requires tailored approaches for specific target populations. The evidence generated from this analysis is crucial to support policy guidance, contribute to evidence-based decisions, guide public health prevention measures, and amplify population health promotion and disease prevention throughout Mongolia.

Exploring steric sea level variability in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic Ocean: a three-decade study (1993–2022)

Sea level rise (SLR) poses a significant threat to coastal regions worldwide, particularly affecting over 60 million people living below 10 m above sea level along the African coast. This study analyzes the spatio-temporal trends of sea level anomaly (SLA) and its components (thermosteric, halosteric and ocean mass) in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic Ocean (ETAO) from 1993 to 2022. The SLA trend for the ETAO, derived from satellite altimetry, is 3.52 ± 0.47 mm/year, similar to the global average of 3.56 ± 0.67 mm/year. Of the three upwelling regions, the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) shows the highest regional trend of 3.42 ± 0.12 mm/year. Using the ARMORD3D dataset, a positive thermosteric sea level trend of 0.88 ± 0.04 mm/year is observed, particularly in the equatorial and southern Atlantic regions. The steric component drives the interannual SLA variability, while the ocean mass component dominates the long-term trends, as confirmed by the GRACE and GRACE-FO missions for 2002–2022. For those two decades, the total SLR from altimetry amounts to 3.80 ± 0.8 mm/year, whilst the steric component is reduced to only 0.19 ± 0.05 mm/year, leaving a residual increase in the ETAO of 3.69 ± 0.5 mm/year. The independent mass change from GRACE amounts to 2.78 ± 0.6 mm/year for this region, which just closes the sea level budget within present uncertainty levels. Spatial analysis of the steric components indicates a warming along the equatorial African coast including the GoG and a freshening near Angola. Strong correlations with regional climate factors, particularly the Tropical South Atlantic Index, highlight the influence of persistent climate modes. These findings underscore the urgent need for mitigation and adaptation strategies to SLR in the ETAO, especially for densely populated coastal communities.

Cradle to gate life-cycle assessment of battery grade nickel sulphate production through high-pressure acid leaching

The rising global demand for high-purity nickel (Ni) sulphate, primarily used in lithium-ion batteries, is largely met by processing Indonesian laterite ores via hydrometallurgy. However, this supply chain is associated with significant environmental challenges and lack of transparent industrial data. This study uses a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) approach to quantify the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy use associated with the production of mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) from low-grade Indonesian laterites via high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL), which is then refined in China for the production of battery-grade nickel sulphate hexahydrate (NiSO4·6H2O, NSH). Fifteen impact categories are analyzed using established impact assessment and allocation (mass and economic) methods. The analysis reveals that feed preparation/HPAL and purification are the stages that contribute most to environmental impacts and in particular to global warming potential (GWP). Mass allocation results in higher environmental impacts, with 36.8 kg CO2-eq per 1 kg of Ni in NSH for GWP, compared to 33.8 kg CO2-eq per 1 kg of Ni in NSH when economic allocation is used. Sensitivity analysis shows a potential reduction (up to 13 %) in key impact categories if production of NSH is fully integrated in Indonesia or a greener electricity mix is used. Overall, our results indicate that the production of MHP in Indonesia and its refinement to NSH in China has a GWP about two times higher than the global average. Given the limited number of LCA studies for the production of battery-grade nickel, this study highlights major environmental concerns for the NSH production process from Indonesian laterites and identifies opportunities for improvement, towards a more sustainable global battery supply chain.

Carbon footprint of global rice production and consumption

Rice paddies are not only sources of staple food for half of the global population but also account for nearly half of the anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) of croplands. Carbon footprint (CF) is a key tool for identifying and weighting sources of the GHGs along the food supply chain, promoting the efforts to curb these emissions within the targets of the climatic change protocol of the Paris Agreement. We introduced a comprehensive global quantification of rice CF, including direct and indirect emissions and sinks of the GHGs of inputs production, packaging, transportation, and application, soil and plant systems, farm operations, and uses of the produced biomass until the end of life. Globally, the rice CF was 2430 kg CO2eq. Mg−1 grain in 2020, of which 46% and 42% were sourced from the Gate and Grave stages, respectively, after excluding 3265 kg CO2eq. Mg−1 grain, that is the assimilated C in plant biomass. Net GHGs emissions of soil, biomass mulching and burning, and farm operations accounted for 20, 17, and 63%, respectively of the Gate stage CF. Meanwhile, food consumption contributed to the Grave stage CF by 92%. The rice CF ranged between 14 and 4854 kg CO2eq. Mg−1 grain among countries, wherein, for example, the rice CF values in Indonesia, India, Vietnam, and Russia represented 9, 50, 97, and 122% of the global average. Southeast, South, and East Asia were the major contributors (35, 34 and 18%, respectively) to the atmospheric CO2 load (2.4 Pg CO2eq.) of global rice production and consumption. This CO2 load will increase to 3.1 Pg CO2eq. in 2100, driven by a 32% growth in rice consumption. Here, we suggested an optimistic strategy (green energy use, hybridization, improving use efficiency of the inputs, and reducing food losses) to reduce the CO2 load by 60%.

Quantifying the Natural Radioactivity and Assessing the Radiation Risks in Different Rock Types at Wadi Nassib Area

Abstract Wadi Nassib, Egypt, has significantly higher natural radiation levels compared to global averages, particularly in uranium, thorium, radium, and potassium. This raises concerns for resident health due to potential radiation exposure. The study suggests these elements may have different origins and emphasizes the need for monitoring and managing such elevated natural radioactivity.

Maize yields have stagnated in sub-Sahara Africa: a possible transgenic solution to weed, pathogen and insect constraints.

Despite major breeding efforts by various national and international agencies, yields for the ~40 million hectares of maize, the major food crop in sub-Saharan Africa, have stagnated at <2 tons/ha/year for the past decade, one-third the global average. Breeders have succeeded in breeding increased yield with a modicum of tolerance to some single-weed or pathogen stresses. There has been minimal adoption of these varieties because introgressing polygenic yield and tolerance traits into locally adapted material is very challenging. Multiple traits to deal with pests (weeds, pathogens, and insects) are needed for farmer acceptance, because African fields typically encounter multiple pest constraints. Also, maize has no inherent resistance to some of these pest constraints, rendering them intractable to traditional breeding. The proposed solution is to simultaneously engineer multiple traits into one genetic locus. The dominantly inherited multi-pest resistance trait single locus can be bred simply into locally adapted, elite high-yielding material, and would be valuable for farmers, vastly increasing maize yields, and allowing for more than regional maize sufficiency. © 2024 The Author(s). Export potential of millets from India: Current status and short-term forecast

This study examined the status and trends of millet exports from India and forecasts future exports based on monthly export data and the ARIMA-TDNN model. Millets, also known as nutri cereals, have been gaining attention for their potential to achieve food and nutritional security sustainably. The Indian government launched several initiatives to promote the cultivation and consumption of millets following the 2018 declaration of the National Year of Millets. Subsequently, the UN General Assembly declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets. India is a significant producer of millets, accounting for 17 per cent of the global cultivation area and 18 per cent of the world’s millet production. The average yield of millets in India is 1.40 t/ha, exceeding the global average. However, India accounts for less than 2 per cent of the world's millet exports. EPIDEMIOLOGY OF BREAST CANCER IN THE ARAB REGION BETWEEN 1999 AND 2024: A NARRATIVE REVIEW

Breast cancer (BC) poses a significant health challenge in both developed and developing countries, with limited research in the Arab region compared to the West. The aim of this review was to provide a comprehensive perspective on breast cancer incidence and mortality trends between 1999 and 2024, considering diverse socio-cultural and economic factors.A thorough literature review was conducted using sources such as PubMed, Medline, and recent WHO publications. Findings revealed that the incidence of breast cancer in the Arab world increased gradually during the period studied. However, the incidence of breast cancer among women in the Arab region was lower than the global average, and the mortality rate among women with breast cancer in the Arab region was lower than the global average. Age-standardized incidence and mortality rates have increased since 1990.The country-specific data showed that the more developed Arab countries tended to have a higher burden of breast cancer. Factors such as urbanization, increased life expectancy, and adoption of westernized lifestyles have been associated with the observed increase in breast cancer rates. Despite promising breast cancer screening initiatives, most Arab countries lack a structured universal screening program and participation rates are very low.The increasing incidence and burden of BC in the Arab region is remarkable, especially considering the limited resources of developing countries in this region. Appropriate strategies such as expansion of screening programs and careful resource management are needed to effectively manage the burden of BC.

Phosphorus flux during the Ediacaran: Rooted in continental weathering or pelagic upwelling?

The Ediacaran Period was punctuated by major environmental and evolutionary milestones, including large-scale phosphogenesis during intervals of elevated phosphorous (P) flux. Although increased P flux could be an important driver of animal evolution and associated ocean oxygenation, the processes responsible for triggering the remarkable Ediacaran phosphogenesis episodes remain unclear. In this study, we present new δ138Ba, 87Sr/86Sr, and major and trace element data from Ediacaran phosphorites of the Doushantou Formation (Nanhua Basin, China). Low-to-negative δ138Ba (−0.31 to 0.06 ‰, analogous to δ138Ba of modern and ancient restricted depositional settings) and elevated 87Sr/86Sr values (0.7100 ± 0.0002, greater than the global average) from lower Doushantuo phosphorites indicate intense local continental weathering enhanced P delivery to the restricted Nanhua Basin at ∼630–600 Ma. During this early phosphogenesis stage, macroeukaryote blooms stimulated atmospheric oxygenation and eutrophication of deep seawater in the Nanhua Basin. In contrast to the lower phosphorites, the elevated and open-marine-like δ138Ba of 0.17 to 0.35 ‰, as well as lower 87Sr/86Sr values (mostly lower than 0.7096, comparable to the global average), from overlying ∼587–574 Ma phosphorites indicate that this later phosphogenesis interval was characterized by upwelling of pelagic deep ocean waters rich in re-mineralized P. Global-scale P burial (as phosphorite) could not lead to decreased eutrophic conditions in the global ocean, but, together with increasing oxygen levels in deep seawater and/or the atmosphere, this process may have finally facilitated the evolution of Ediacaran fauna.
