NewGen Surgical: reimagining health for people and planet

Research methodology The case study draws on structured interviews with Rob Chase, Founder and CEO of NewGen Surgical, as well as secondary data sources to analyze the effectiveness of these solutions in mitigating the risks and enhancing the company’s competitive advantage. Case overview/synopsis This case study examines how NewGen Surgical, a small- to medium-sized medical equipment manufacturer based in the USA, navigates a supply chain crisis caused by post-pandemic (COVID-19) supply and demand distress, trade restrictions, and the US–China trade war in 2022. It outlines the journey of CEO and Founder, Robert Chase, as he started, grew and is maintaining the company and its various challenges. The case study reviews the risks and vulnerabilities of the company, which heavily relies on Chinese suppliers for most of its operations. To address the supply chain challenges, the case study explores alternative solutions such as insourcing, reshoring, diversifying the supplier base, changing safety stock and implementing new technologies. The case can be designed to teach business courses such as global business, supply chain and entrepreneurship. Complexity academic level This case study is intended for undergraduate and graduate students in courses such as global business, supply chain and entrepreneurship. In addition, this case study may be incorporated with modules on learning organizations, knowledge management and entrepreneurship to aid students in comprehending the principles of global sourcing, offshoring and supply chain management.

Digital Logistics and Blockchain Utilization on Global Supply Chain Management

Global supply chain management faces several challenges, such as lack of transparency, traceability, and efficiency, leading to fraudulent activities, lost revenues, and poor customer satisfaction. This study addressed these challenges by investigating the potential effects of integrating blockchain technology and digital logistics in supply chain management. The research design is a mixed-method study involving a sample size of 230 respondents involved in the supply chain management industry. The respondents are selected using a random stratified random sampling technique, and the inclusion criteria will be that they must work in a company that utilizes digital logistics. The researcher gathered data through online surveys, and SPSS was used to analyze the data. The results show that the level of digitization of global supply chain management is high. Further, the utilization of digital logistics and blockchain technology in global supply chain management is highly evident. However, these companies always need help utilizing digital logistics and blockchain technology. Also, there is a significant effect on digital logistics, blockchain technology, and global supply chain management. All in all, companies can use this technology to gain a competitive advantage, reduce costs, and increase customer satisfaction.

Secured finance handling for supply chain integrated business intelligence using blockchain application scenarios

Business intelligence is becoming more essential for supply chain administrators to make good decisions. The globalization of supply chains makes their management and control more challenging. Blockchain is a distributed digital ledger technology that guarantees traceability, transparency, and security and promises to ease global supply chain management issues. This paper proposes the Blockchain-assisted Secure Data Management Framework (BSDMF) for financial data handling for supply chain integrated business intelligence models. Analyzing, collecting, and demonstrating data could be important to a business, its supply chain performance, and sustainability. The blockchain can interrupt supply chain processes for improved finance handling, distributed management, and process automation. The study’s experimental result will help organizations deploy blockchain applications with intelligent business strategies to support supply chain management effectively. The simulation outcome has been implemented, and the recommended method achieves a computation time of fewer than 2 hours, an efficiency ratio of 97.4%, an error ratio of 94.1%, data authentication of 92.1%, and a data management ratio of 98.7%.

A decision-making problem for product outsourcing with flexible production under a global supply chain management

Any product outsourcing expands the geological boundaries of production industries under the global supply chain management. The global outsourcing increases concerns for production industries, which is less for domestic supply chain management. Two main strategy makings for product outsourcing under the global supply chain are the proper information about products and services for those products. This study examines a service-driven digital global supply chain management to find intriguing factors for product outsourcing decision-making with international tax, dollar rate, and tariff. The flexible production & the production–transportation lead time of manufacturers and two-stage safety factors of retailers are features of the digital global supply chain. Manufacturers develop a new investment strategy on radio frequency identification technology for product information sharing with retailers. Both manufacturers and retailers pay carbon tax for all products along with transportation for the environmental development. A classical optimization technique finds the global optimum profit of the global supply chain management. Numerical results establish service and safety stock of products as two decision-making factors for digital global supply chain management. The profit is high when retailers are situated in a low-economy country with high service. Retailers in a high-economy country with no service cause a 57.98% loss than the original profit. This phenomenon justifies that local customers can put their trust in buying imported products when they are sure about product-related services. Comparison, discussions, and sensitivity analysis are provided for a detailed result analysis.

Optimizing Supplier Selection in Indonesia Through Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP)

This study introduces a structured multi-criteria decision-making framework using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), applied to evaluate suppliers based on quality, price, quantity of supply, and plantation area. Effective supplier selection is crucial for maintaining supply chain efficiency. By employing the Expert Choice 11 software, the AHP method quantitatively assessed each criterion, resulting in a definitive ranking of suppliers. The analysis highlighted the paramount importance of quality in supplier selection, assigning it the highest weight (0.565). The outcomes reveal that a meticulous application of AHP significantly enhances decision-making in supplier selection, suggesting its broader applicability in global supply chain management contexts to improve operational efficacy and resilience. When Gray Markets Meet “Made in China”: The Impacts of Global Markets and Value-Added Tax Refund

Motivated by the trend that a gray market such as overseas shopping is thriving on E-commerce platforms, this paper investigates the impacts of the gray market on global supply chain management. We consider a multinational firm (MNF) that outsources product manufacturing to a contract manufacturer (CM) in China and sells products in both the China market and overseas market. Owing to the price gap between the two markets, gray firms may purchase products in the low-price market and compete with the MNF in the high-price market. We build MNF-led Stackelberg game models under the two cases where the wholesale price between the CM and MNF is exogenously given or endogenously set by the CM. We also consider the impacts of China’s partial value-added tax (VAT) refund policy and consumers’ valuation discount for gray products. Our analysis shows that the gray market emerges if the two markets are highly asymmetric in size. Moreover, the gray market is more likely to emerge with lower values of valuation discount, substitutability, and VAT loss. We find that both the MNF and CM may be better off with the emergence of the gray market. When the gray market does not emerge but poses a threat, the MNF strategically adjusts her global pricing strategy to prevent the gray market. In this case, the threat of the gray market always hurts the MNF and CM under exogenous wholesale price, but may improve the MNF’s profit under endogenous wholesale price, since the CM is motivated to lower wholesale price to restore demand.

Stability And Risk Management of Global Supply Chains in Foreign Trade Economy

Driven by the wave of globalization, supply chains have become a key link connecting the economies of various countries. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the current status of global supply chains and an in-depth exploration of the many factors affecting supply chain stability, including supplier reliability, logistics system efficiency, demand forecast accuracy, and inventory management effectiveness. It further delves into many aspects of supply chain risk management, including risk identification, assessment, mitigation and monitoring. Analyze and formulate contingency plans for emergencies as well as regular monitoring and evaluation strategies and measures to improve the effectiveness and value of risk management. Finally, this study emphasizes the importance of supply chain stability and efficient risk management in the global foreign trade economic system, and provides suggestions for future research directions and possible improvement strategies. This research has far-reaching significance for enhancing the transparency, resilience and sustainability of global supply chains, and is crucial to the stable development of the global economy.

Practices and strategies for global sourcing and supply chain management: a Pareto analysis and MOORA a mixed method approach

Purpose This study aims to identify and prioritize the key practices and strategies for effective global sourcing and supply chain management (SCM). Design/methodology/approach The study uses a combination of Pareto analysis and multi-objective optimization based on ratio analysis research methodology to analyze and establish the relationships among the identified key practices and strategies. Pareto analysis enables organization to prioritize organizational efforts and resources by focusing on the most critical factors. Findings The study shows that the “eco-friendly sourcing strategy”, “lean manufacturing” and “tool cost analysis” are the top critical practices and strategy variables for global sourcing and SCM, whereas the “risk management”, “procurement strategy” and “leverage digital solutions” are the critical practices and strategy variables. Research limitations/implications The findings of this research can also assist organizations in making informed decisions to optimize their global sourcing and supply chain operations. Originality/value By using these methods, this research paper gives valuable insights into the critical practices and strategies that can enhance efficiency, mitigate risks and drive success in global sourcing and SCM. The subjects and elements this study identified will serve as a framework and suggestions for further theoretical investigation and real-world implementations.

Why do MNE foreign subsidiaries differ in supply chain management capability, and how does it matter?

Purpose Despite the growing and widespread importance of exploring the primary factors facilitating global value chain (GVC) and supply chain management, this topic has received surprisingly little attention to date. Drawing upon the technology–organization–environment framework and the resource-based view, this study aims to fill these important gaps in the literature by theorizing and developing a comprehensive model to explain how a foreign subsidiary of multinational enterprises can improve the upgrading of the GVC and supply chain performance in a host market. Design/methodology/approach Using survey data collected from 266 foreign subsidiaries of multinational enterprises operating in the Chinese manufacturing sector, this study empirically examines the theoretical framework using a structural equation modeling approach. Findings The results demonstrated that the relative advantages of digital technology, supplier diversification and environmental uncertainty all contribute positively to the development of foreign subsidiaries’ supply chain management capabilities. Meanwhile, supply chain management capability plays a positive role in foreign subsidiaries facilitating GVC upgrading and enhancing supply chain performance. Research limitations/implications The findings of this study provide many important implications and useful insights to foreign subsidiaries operating in an emerging host market by concentrating on how to develop and maintain their competitive advantages in the process of GVC reshaping and supply chain restructuring. Originality/value This study provides a useful guide to help firms better understand how they may develop and enhance their competitive advantages in upgrading their GVCs and implementing supply chain restructuring. In addition, this research generates important policy implications considering the recent trend toward creating more effective and sustainable global supply value chains.

This study aims to identify best practices in strategic procurement to alleviate the impact of supply chain disruptions around the world. The UK and similar countries rely significantly on global procurement, and the disruptions caused by events like the COVID-19 outbreak and Brexit have severe impacts. The study is conducted in two phases, including a literature review and actual research with an apt methodology. The primary findings of this research are the identification of best practices and looking at the procurement function as a strategic function integrated with supply chain management to make supply chain resilient organizations. This study contributes to the expanding literature concentrating on evaluating the best practices for a sourcing organization to become supply chain resilient during significant supply chain disruptions.

Due to changes in needs of customers, business environment, and technological developments, the scope of Freight Forwarder services has expanded with the increased complexity. Expanded service scop of freight forwarder plays key role in increasing customer satisfaction and loyalty by providing comprehensive logistics services from global supply chain management, value-added services, information and consulting. However, domestic companies are meeting with cutthroat competition for the price rather than improving the quality of services. Consequentially, competitiveness in the international arena is weakening by only focusing on a price war. Domestic logistics companies should break away from this hyper competition on price. Instead, concentrating on creating customer value to secure a competitive edge beyond the traditional role of transportation in the new economic market, and innovation would be essential. Regardless of high necessity for in-depth research on this, there are not many innovation studies on the domestic Freight Forwarder yet. In this study, Innovation type had been sorted into service and management. This division is focusing on the nature of logistics industry with seeing uncertainty of technology, the characteristics of CEOs, information system of the logistics, and personal traits as the factors which influencing to innovation in freight forwarding. Logistics performance was classified into efficiency and effectiveness, and corporate performance was measured as financial performance. Research result was proved that innovation factors have positive effects on both service and management revolutionization. Also on the efficiency and effectiveness of logistics. In addition, it was demonstrated that efficiency and effectiveness, which are logistics performance, have a positive effect on a company's financial performance.

Rethinking Global Supply Chain Management in a Changing Environment to Develop an Integrated Freight Transportation System in Bangladesh

Global supply chain management has been a critical aspect of the international business community for decades. With the rapid growth of globalization, companies have been expanding their businesses to different parts of the world, establishing cross-border partnerships and operations, and relying on global trade for their success. In recent years, the environment in which these supply chains operate has undergone significant changes. The COVID-19 pandemic, changes in government policies, and fluctuations in global trade and investment have created a more complex and challenging landscape for companies to manage their supply chains effectively. This has resulted in a need for companies to rethink their supply chain strategies, especially in developing countries such as Bangladesh. The study employs qualitative research methodology to develop an integrated freight transportation system in Bangladesh just after the changing environment of supply chain management due to COVID-19, geopolitics, and other negative impacts that brought supply chain risks/disruptions in the global freight movement from/to Bangladesh through Bangladeshi seaports. The findings of the research brought the transportation disruptions that lead to problems like operation shutdown, lost sales, late deliveries, and reputation loss remarkably. River transport emerges as the overwhelmingly preferred mode, presenting a substantial 60% of the respondents' choices whereas rail mode is only 30% but rail offers advantages in terms of efficiency and cost-effectiveness to make it a strong candidate for transporting goods Furthermore, 41.58% of respondents expressed the view that COVID-19 has significantly disrupted various activities, including the global supply chain and shipping trade. The purpose of this research is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current state of global supply chain management in Bangladesh and to identify ways to enhance the country's integrated freight transportation system. This research will examine the existing infrastructure, policies, and practices, and suggest mechanisms for improving the efficiency and competitiveness of the supply chain in Bangladesh.

Transitioning the apparel supply chain to circular economy: a quantitative approach

This paper aims at exploring the potential of implementing circular economy in global supply chains, from the economic and environmental perspectives. The scientific community has revealed a growing interest in deepening the topic of global circular supply chain management, although literature based on quantitative studies is almost scant. This paper aims at filling some significant gaps by demonstrating that a transition to a circular supply chain not just leads to savings of emissions and natural resources, but it is also a driver to boost profitability. To this purpose, a real-life case-study of a global supply chain in the apparel industry has been modelled and simulations are conducted to quantitatively evaluate the benefits of three different circular supply chains implementing Reuse, Remanufacture and recycled processes over a traditional linear configuration. Results are obtained through a robust design of experiments and are validated via ANOVA test. According to the findings, a circular supply chain configuration can boost profitability by more than 5%, reducing at the same time the consumption of environmental resources by more than 10%.
