Sexual and site differences in calcium consumption by the Malabar Giant Squirrel Ratufa indica.

The calcium ingestion of Malabar Giant Squirrels Ratufa indica (Sciuridae) was examined at two sites, Magod and Bhimashankar, in western India. In females at Magod a positive correlation was found between rates of calcium ingestion from food resources and the contribution of those resources to the daily diet. This relationship was true for all females at Magod irre-spective of their reproductive condition. This relationship was neither significant for males at the same site nor for both sexes at Bhimashankar. A differential requirement for calcium between the sexes and the occurrence of higher rates of calcium ingestion or the probable presence of more easily digestible calcium at Bhimashankar are postulated to explain the observed phenomenon. Mature leaves and bark appear to be reliable sources of calcium at these sites.

A Giant Tree Squirrel from the Late Miocene of Kenya

A large sciurid from the late Miocene of northwestern Kenya is described as a new genus and species of Protoxerini. The fossil squirrel is similar to the largely terrestrial extant genus Epixerus and differs from the arboreal Protoxerus in possessing a number of specializations of the postcranial skeleton associated with “cursorial” habits (Emmons, 1975). In addition to large body size, the most notable feature of the giant palm squirrels (Protoxerini, exclusive of the sun squirrels, Heliosciurus ) is their extraordinarily deep lower incisors, apparently adapted for gnawing hard fruits. In body mass, Kubwaxerus pattersoni , new genus and species, was approximately twice the size of the largest living African tree squirrel, Protoxerus stangeri , and had the largest and deepest lower incisors of any known tree squirrel.

Reproductive Tract and Evolutionary Relationships of the Chinese Rock Squirrel, Sciurotamias davidianus

The male reproductive tract and female os genitale of the endemic Chinese rock squirrel Sciurotamias davidianus are described for the first time. The presence of a penile duct, a well-developed baculum, and accessory glands separates Sciurotamias from the tribe Tamias-ciurini, and the structure of the baculum also separates it from the Callosciurini. The penis, baculum, and certain other characters are unexpectedly similar to those of the giant Indo-Chinese tree squirrels, Ratufa ; thus Sciurotamias is referred tentatively to the tribe Ratufini.
