WIDEBAND CAVITY-BACKED PATCH ANTENNA FOR PCS/IMT2000/2.4 GHZ WLAN

Abstract—A wideband cavity-backed patch antenna is presented for operating at PCS, IMT200, and 2.4 GHz WLAN bands. A parasitic patch and a probe with a capacitor patch is used to enhance the bandwidth. The cavity-backed and without cavity-backed antenna has been compared. It has been found that the cavity backed antenna has wide impedance bandwidth of 43% and high gain level. It can simultaneously serve most of the modern wireless communication applications that operate at 1.7 GHz–2.5 GHz.

MULTIBAND CPW-FED TRIANGLE-SHAPED MONOPOLE ANTENNA FOR WIRELESS APPLICATIONS

A multiband CPW-fed triangle-shaped monopole antenna for wireless applications covering 2.4and 5 GHz WLAN bands and 3.4 GHz WIMAX band in IEEE 802.16 is proposed. Prototype of the proposed antenna have been constructed and tested. The experimental results show that the antenna can provide two separate impedance bandwidths of 140 MHz (about 5.8% centered at 2.43 GHz) and 3100 MHz (about 61.4% centered at 4.91 GHz), which meet the required bandwidths specification of 2.4/5 GHz WLAN and 3.4 GHz WIMAX standard. Good omnidirectional radiation in the desired frequency bands has been achieved. The proposed antenna with relatively low profile is suitable for multiband wireless applications.

MICROSTRIP-FED DUAL BAND FOLDED DIPOLE ANTENNA FOR DCS/PCS/2.4 GHz WLAN APPLICATIONS

A compact dual band folded dipole antenna printed on either side of a substrate and excited by a 50 Ω microstrip line with a truncated ground plane covering DCS/PCS/2.4 GHz WLAN bands is presented. In the proposed design, a microstrip-fed folded monopole antenna is first designed and then modified it to a microstrip-fed folded dipole by placing another folded arm on the opposite side of the substrate extending from the ground plane, for achieving dual resonance. The antenna resonating at 1.87 GHz and 2.46 GHz has 2:1 VSWR bandwidth of 17% and 9% respectively. The proposed antenna offers 53% area reduction compared to a standard rectangular microstrip antenna. Details of the antenna design and experimental results are presented.

CPW-FED Notched Monopole Antenna for Umts/imt-2000/WLAN Applications

A single-layer coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed planar monopole antenna consisting of a rectangular microstrip patch with double-cornered notches to obtain dual wideband operations covering UMTS/IMT-2000 and 5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN bands is presented. Prototypes of the proposed antenna have been constructed and experimentally studied. The measured results explore good radiation characteristics of monopole-like patterns, 19.1 and 53.5% impedance bandwidths, and 3.2and 6.5 dBi peak antenna gains for the lower and upper frequency bands, respectively. Details of the proposed design and experimental results are presented and discussed.

A Novel Patch Antenna with a T-shaped Parasitic Strip for 2.4/5.8 GHz WLAN Applications

A novel dual-band design of patch antenna is presented in this paper. Using a T-shaped parasitic strip, the patch antenna is able to generate two separate resonant modes to cover 2.4/5.8 GHz (wireless local area network) WLAN bands with satisfactory radiation properties. The impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 250MHz centered at 2.42 GHz and 750MHz centered at 5.78 GHz for S11 < −10dB. The parameters which affect the performance of the antenna in terms of its frequency domain characteristics are investigated.

Novel Dual-Band and Broad-Band Designs of Circle Slot Antenna with a Cross-Shaped Stub

Novel dual-band and broad-band designs of a slot antenna with a cross-shaped stub are presented in this paper. For dual-band operation, the antenna's operating frequency ratio can be tuned by adjusting size of the cross-shaped stub. When proper design is achieved, the antenna can generate two separate resonant modes to cover 2.4/5.2 GHz (wireless local area network) WLAN bands. The simulated impedance bandwidths of the proposed antenna are 260 MHz centered at 2.44 GHz and 610 MHz centered at 5.36 GHz for S11 < −10 dB. Furthermore, it is found that two separate resonate frequencies can be connected to cover the frequency ranges of the digital communication system, personal communication system, international mobile telecommunication, and 2.4GHz WLAN. The bandwidth of the wideband antenna is 1.49 GHz centered at 2 GHz. Details of the proposed dual-frequency and broad-band designs are described and simulation results are presented and discussed in this paper.

A Microstrip Fed Monopole Patch Antenna with three Stubs for Dual-band WLAN Applications

A microstrip fed dual-band design of monopole patch antenna with three stubs is presented in this paper. Printed on a dielectric substrate and fed by a 50 Ω microstrip line, a rectangular patch antenna with 3 stubs is demonstrated to generate two separate resonant modes to cover 2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz (wireless local area network) WLAN bands with satisfactory radiation properties. The impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 400 MHz at 2.4 GHz band (2250–2650 MHz, 16.3%) and 920 MHz at 5 GHz band (4990–5910 MHz, 16.9%). The performances of this antenna are highly desirable for 2.4 and 5 GHz dual-band WLAN applications. The parameters which affect the performance of the antenna in terms of its frequency domain characteristics are investigated in this paper.

A New Compact Microstrip-Fed Dual-Band Coplanar Antenna for WLAN Applications

A novel compact microstrip fed dual-band coplanar antenna for wireless local area network is presented. The antenna comprises of a rectangular center strip and two lateral strips printed on a dielectric substrate and excited using a 50 Omega microstrip transmission line. The antenna generates two separate resonant modes to cover 2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN bands. Lower resonant mode of the antenna has an impedance bandwidth (2:1 VSWR) of 330 MHz (2190-2520 MHz), which easily covers the required bandwidth of the 2.4 GHz WLAN, and the upper resonant mode has a bandwidth of 1.23 GHz (4849-6070 MHz), covering 5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN bands. The proposed antenna occupy an area of 217 mm2 when printed on FR4 substrate (epsivr=4.7). A rigorous experimental study has been conducted to confirm the characteristics of the antenna. Design equations for the proposed antenna are also developed

Multi-band monopole antenna with inverted U-shaped parasitic plane

A microstrip-fed printed monopole antenna having a parasitic plane is proposed for multi-band applications. By inserting an inverted U-shaped parasitic plane on the bottom of the dielectric substrate, the proposed antenna can easily cover DCS/UMTS/WiBro/2.4 GHz WLAN and 5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN bands at the same time. In addition, a Γ-shaped slit is inserted on the main patch to cover the GSM frequency band. Experimental and numerical results of the designed monopole antenna are presented and analysed.

Compact dual-band antenna for wireless access point

A compact dual-band printed antenna covering the 2.4 GHz (2400-2485 MHz) and 5.2 GHz (5150-5350 MHz) WLAN bands is presented. The experimental analysis shows a 2:1 VSWR bandwidth of up to 32 and 8% for 2.4 and 5.2 GHz, respectively. The measured radiation patterns are nearly omnidirectional, with moderate gain in both the WLAN bands.

Wideband stubby monopole antenna for mobile phone

A novel stubby monopole antenna fabricated using a single metal plate is presented. A prototype of the proposed antenna with a cross-sectional area of 10×10 mm and a length of 20 mm is implemented, and the antenna shows a wide operating bandwidth of about 10.9 GHz, making it easy to cover the UMTS band and the 2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN bands for mobile/WLAN dual-mode operation of a mobile phone.

An ISM band CMOS power amplifier design for WLAN

This paper describes the novel chip design and modeling of 2.4 GHz CMOS transistor Class-E power amplifier (PA) to meet IEEE 802.11b/g receiver specifications for WLAN applications. Techniques for accurate modeling of active and passive components at 2.4 GHz WLAN band are presented. The input power for this PA is −5 dBm. The overall layout is completed by TSMC 0.25 μ m radio frequency (RF) process. The post-layout simulation indicates that the power-added efficiency (PAE) is about 50.6% and this PA can generate 24.1 dBm of output power from a 1.5 V supply into a 50 Ω load.

Printed antenna with folded non-uniform meander line for 2.4/5 GHz WLAN bands

A low profile dual-band antenna for WLAN applications is proposed. It has the folded non-uniform meander line with the impedance bandwidth of 140 MHz at the 2.4 GHz band and 1500 MHz near 5 GHz with VSWR below 2, and an omnidirectional radiation pattern is obtained.

Ultra-wideband tapered slot antenna with band cutoff characteristic

A novel ultra-wideband (UWB) tapered slot antenna (TSA) is proposed that has both enhanced impedance bandwidth enough to cover UWB systems and band cutoff characteristic of 5 GHz WLAN band limited by IEEE802.11a and HIPERLAN/2. To achieve these two characteristics of wide bandwidth and partial band cutoff at the TSA, a broadband microstrip–slotline transition with multi-arm stubs and λ/4 short stubs, respectively, is used. From measured results, it is observed that wide bandwidth of about 2 octaves from 2.8 to 11.09 GHz for the VSWR&lt;2 is achieved, while 5.05–5.93 GHz is cutoff with the radiated power of this cutoff band effectively suppressed as about −9 dB for the peak power level of other bands.

Printed folded dipole array antenna with directional radiation for 2.4/5 GHz WLAN operation

A printed linear array antenna comprising three half-wave folded dipole elements with the first two elements operating in the 5 GHz band and the third one operating in the 2.4 GHz band for WLAN operation is presented. The array antenna provides directional radiation patterns with vertical polarisation for frequencies across both the 2.4 and 5 GHz WLAN bands, and the measured antenna gain is 3.5–3.7 dBi for the 2.4 GHz band and 4.5–5.0 dBi for the 5 GHz band.

Surface-mount dual-loop antenna for 2.4/5 GHz WLAN operation

A surface-mount dual-loop antenna suitable for dual-frequency WLAN operation is presented. For achieving dual-frequency operation with a compact size, the antenna comprises two loop strips of different sizes printed on a flexible printed circuit board, which is then bent and attached onto a foam base of compact size. The antenna shows an attractive feature of high antenna gain, about 4 and 5 dBi for frequencies across the 2.4 and 5 GHz WLAN bands, respectively.

Metal-plate 1×2 array antenna for 5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN operation

A novel metal-plate 1×2 array antenna constructed easily from a single metal plate and suited for WLAN operation in the 5.2/5.8 GHz bands (5150–5350/5725–5875 MHz) is presented. The metal-plate array antenna comprises two radiating elements series-fed by a 50 Ω microstrip line and excited in phase, leading to a high antenna gain level (&gt;4.0 dBi) for frequencies across the 5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN bands.
