Dental teachers' perceptions about the status of geriatric dentistry in the dental curriculum: A qualitative exploration in the Indian context.

The increasing geriatric population in India needs special attention from the oral health workforce. This study explores dental teachers' perceptions of the status of geriatric dentistry in the dental curriculum and the challenges of implementing geriatric dentistry curriculum in the present dental training sector in India from the trainers' (teachers) perspective. We utilised a qualitative approach, and four focus group discussions were conducted with/among various levels of academic teachers-Heads of Departments (n = 8), Board of Study members (n = 7), Deans (n = 5), Lecturers and Associate professors (n = 8). All discussions were audio-taped and transcribed. Data was analysed thematically, and coding was done using an inductive approach. Consensus on themes was achieved through deliberations. Three themes were identified-Unique challenges in managing geriatric patients (bordering on Dental care, Attitude, Awareness, Social issues and dependency on family); Current issues with provision of geriatric care (Curricular concerns-Teachers' training, Students' training, Instructional content, timing of delivery; Students' and trainers' attitudes; Infrastructural issues) and Strategies for advancement (Sensitisation of policymakers, Collaboration with other agencies, Modification in course design, Improved educational strategies and Shift in patient care delivery). Trainers perceived a strong need to develop geriatric competencies among dental students. A geriatric dentistry curriculum based on local needs could ensure the success and sustenance of change. Introducing specialisation in geriatric dentistry would ensure quality oral care for the rising geriatric population. Innovative teaching strategies, interdisciplinary training and the use of newer technologies could aid in improved teaching of geriatric dentistry.

Relationship Between Oral Hypofunction and Nutritional Status in Patients Treated With Maxillofacial Prostheses.

Introduction Patients who have jaw or tongue defects owing to head and neck cancer or congenital disease suffer from oral dysfunction such as speech, swallowing, and mastication. Although maxillofacial prostheses are applied to improve oral functions, their oral functions remain compromised compared to those of patients without jaw or tongue defects. On the other hand, it has been reported that oral hypofunction could lead to malnutrition in the general elderly. However, to date, no reports have evaluated the relationship between oral function and nutritional status in patients with maxillofacial prostheses. In this study, we comprehensively evaluated oral function according to the examination items for oral hypofunction. We assessed which functions were related to nutritional status in patients with jaw defects caused by tumors or congenital diseases who are candidates for maxillofacial prosthetic treatment. Methods Patients who underwent prosthetic treatment at the Department of Maxillofacial Prosthodontics, Aichi-Gakuin University Dental Hospital, between May 2021 and January 2024 and who were doing well were included in the study. Oral function was assessed with seven tests according to the criteria of the Japanese Society of Geriatric Dentistry, and nutritional status was evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form (MNA-SF). Patients were classified according to age and type of deficiency. Additionally, the presence or absence of oral hypofunction and malnutrition or risk of malnutrition were assessed. The impact of oral hypofunction tests and defect status on the risk of malnutrition was evaluated using a logistic regression model. Results Oral hypofunction and malnutrition or risk of malnutrition were more frequent in the elderly group by age. Regarding the type of defect, the rate of oral hypofunction and malnutrition or risk of malnutrition was highest in the tongue defect group. Results of the logistic regression analysis indicated that nutritional status was associated with tongue deficiency, tongue-lip motor function, tongue pressure, and swallowing function. Conclusion The nutritional status of maxillofacial prosthetic wearers was associated with oral hypofunction. Particularly, malnutrition and risk of malnutrition were increased with tongue defects and deficiencies in tongue-lip motor function, tongue pressure, and swallowing.

Indonesian dentists' views on providing oral health care for older adults

BackgroundWith demographic changes in aging populations, dentists require special care protocols to treat older adults with diverse and complex oral health needs and problems. Knowledge, positive attitudes, and sufficient practice experience are essential components for promptly treating older adults. However, many dentists encounter multiple barriers influencing their willingness to provide care for older adults. This study assessed Indonesian dentists' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) in providing oral health care (OHC) for older adults, including their willingness and barriers.MethodsA cross‐sectional survey was conducted with 392 dentists employing an online questionnaire between April and June 2022. The respondents' KAP was categorised utilising a modified Blooms' cut‐off point of ≥60%. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, the x2 test, and logistic regression.ResultsMost dentists demonstrated adequate knowledge (62.2%), a positive attitude (95.4%), sufficient practice experience (91.6%), and a high willingness (98%) to provide OHC services for older adults. However, 91.4% encountered barriers primarily related to interpersonal communication, disease complexity and polypharmacy, and patient functional status. Significant associations were found between dentists' attitudes toward practices and willingness to attend geriatric dentistry training with knowledge.ConclusionImplementation of continuing professional development (CPD) in geriatric dentistry, the inclusion of geriatric dentistry into the undergraduate curriculum, and enhancing clinic accessibility for older adults may improve dentists' preparedness and benefit the future provision of OHC for older adults in Indonesia.

Geriatric dentistry in palliative care: a systematic review

This systematic review aimed to identify the role of geriatric dentistry in end-of-life palliative care by synthesizing the published scientific literature on the topic and analyzing its significance and contributions. Following PRISMA guidelines, this study is registered with PROSPERO (CRD42024529548). Comprehensive electronic searches were conducted in the MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Scopus databases using the terms "Dental Care for the Elderly" and "Palliative Care," supplemented by meticulous manual searches. A total of 215 studies were initially retrieved, and 10 were meticulously selected based on the inclusion criteria. The results underscore the importance of multi/interdisciplinary collaboration and emphasize the need for performance improvement strategies in geriatric dentistry within palliative care settings. Although the scientific production in this area remains limited, dental interventions are demonstrated to be crucial, with various successful approaches well-documented. Current research strongly suggests that geriatric dentistry is an indispensable component of comprehensive palliative care, given that the oral cavity is significantly affected by the aging process.

Perception of Caregivers about Oral Health Services for Institutionalized Older Adults: A Mixed Method Study.

In India, the absence of formal training in geriatric dentistry and the lack of recognition of it as a speciality contributes to the deterioration of oral health in the older adults. India lacks specific oral healthcare policies for older adults. Additionally, caregivers' perspective in old age homes regarding oral healthcare services remains underexplored, necessitating further studies in this context. A mixed method study was conducted, and the quantitative component focused on assessing the oral health status of institutionalized older adults and caregivers' perceptions using a questionnaire. The qualitative part evaluates caregivers' perceptions of providing oral healthcare services for older adults through in-depth interviews. Mean DMFT among institutionalized older adults was 15.52±8.23. More than 50% of caregivers perceived that the oral health status of institutionalized older adults was fair. Barriers to oral health services include autonomy, difficulty in traveling, lack of financial support, lack of knowledge and time. Approaches to enhancing oral health services for institutionalized older adults include oral health education for older adults and their caregivers, monthly dental visits to the institution, utilization of portable dental chair services, collaboration with dental colleges/dental clinics, distribution of oral health education materials, and provision of oral hygiene aids. Findings from our study indicate the need to collaborate with dental institutions to provide oral health services in old age homes, to improve the oral health status of older adults and caregivers' knowledge.

Oral management for a patient with trismus accompanied by Isaacs’ syndrome: a case report

BackgroundIsaacs’ syndrome, also known as neuromyotonia or peripheral nerve hyperexcitability, is a rare disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system. Clinical findings include cramps, fasciculations, and myokymia; however, there are few reports of dental treatment for trismus.Case presentationA patient with trismus due to Isaacs’ syndrome experienced swelling and pain in the gingiva surrounding his right lower first molar. He was diagnosed with chronic apical periodontitis by a dentist near his home. However, the patient was informed that dental treatment and medication could not be administered because of the presence of Isaacs’ syndrome, and he visited the Geriatric Dentistry and Perioperative Oral Care Center at Kyushu University Hospital 2 weeks later. The patient’s painless mouth-opening distance (between incisors) was 20 mm at that time, and medication, including amoxicillin capsules and acetaminophen, was administered because the dental extraction forceps or endodontic instruments were difficult to insert into the oral cavity for treatment. Two months after his initial visit, the patient visited us complaining of pain in the same area. However, he had recently undergone plasmapheresis treatment in neurology to alleviate limited mouth opening and systemic myalgia, resulting in a pain-free mouth-opening distance of approximately 35 mm. During this temporary period in which he had no restriction in mouth opening, we performed tooth extraction and bridge restoration on the mandibular right first molar and created an oral appliance for sleep bruxism.ConclusionsPlasmapheresis therapy transiently reduced trismus, rendering dental interventions feasible, albeit temporarily. This case report underscores the importance of close collaboration between neurologists and dentists who encounter similar cases while furnishing valuable insights to inform dental treatment planning.

Associations of sex, age, and number of remaining teeth with performance on oral hypofunction tests.

Oral hypofunction comprises seven aspects of oral condition, including oral hygiene, oral dryness, bite strength, tongue-lip motor function, tongue pressure, masticatory function, and swallowing function. Each of these seven has a single diagnostic criterion; however, the use of a single indicator without consideration of sex, age, or other factors is controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between the oral hypofunction test and sex, age, and number of remaining teeth. The study was conducted at 12 facilities by the members of the Japanese Society of Geriatric Dentistry during April to December 2019. The participants comprised 181 healthy older adults aged 65 years and over (56.9% female; age range 65-95 years) who regularly visited these facilities. All tests of oral function and oral status available in Japan were performed on the participants, and the association between these tests and sex, age, and number of remaining teeth was examined. Sex differences were observed in masticatory function, bite force, lip closure force, jaw-opening force, oral diadochokinesis "ka," and tongue coating index (p < .05). In men, age was weakly (r = 0.20-0.40) associated with masticatory function, jaw-opening force, maximum tongue pressure, oral diadochokinesis, and swallowing function. In women, the number of remaining teeth, masticatory function, jaw-opening force, and oral diadochokinesis "ta" and "ka" was also weakly associated with age. Performance on the oral hypofunction test differs by sex, age, and number of remaining teeth. This means that the current single criterion for evaluation requires caution in its interpretation.

The scope of practice of geriatric dentistry in British Columbia (Canada): An exploratory study.

The oral health needs of frail older adults are increasing with an aging population in Canada. The objective of this study was to explore the perceptions of dentists in British Columbia regarding their view of geriatric dentistry as a distinct scope of practice and in relation to special needs dentistry. Qualitative data were gathered thorough semi guided interviews of a purposeful sample of dental clinicians, educators and members of organized dentistry with specialized knowledge of oral health for frail older adults. Interviews were transcribed, coded, and analyzed using a thematic approach. Thematic saturation was reached with the 10 participants in this study. Through the method of interpretative description, patient, dentist, and systemic factors that shaped scope of practice for geriatric dentistry were identified as well as the broader skill sets required for geriatric dentistry. The study found that participants perceived geriatric dentistry as unique scope of practice from general dentistry requiring special knowledge in the management of challenges associated with aging with frailty as well as the ability to work in long-term care. Similar to special needs dentistry, geriatric dentistry requires person-centered care and emphasized the need for interprofessional collaboration in alternative care settings.

Factors associated with predoctoral and graduate dental students' intention to care for elderly patients: A cross-sectional study.

Ageism among pre-doctoral and graduate dental students may reduce their propensity to provide dental treatment to elderly patients leading to substandard healthcare for this population. This study evaluated the impact of perceived ageism constructs and geriatric dentistry education on the intention of pre-doctoral and graduate students to provide dental care for elderly patients. A questionnaire was applied to collect the data for this cross-sectional study from pre-doctoral students in their clinical years and graduate students in their internship year (N=201). A total of 183 completed responses were received, and the response rate was 91%. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed to determine the incremental effects of perceived ageism constructs and geriatric dentistry education on the intention to provide dental care for elderly patients. Geriatric dental education (B=0.328, t=3.826, p<0.001) and patients' low compliance (B=0.503, t=4.658, p<0.001) were significantly positive predictors of pre-doctoral and graduate students' intentions to care for elderly patients. Also, negative attitudes toward the lives of elderly people have a substantial adverse effect on the intention of care for this population (B=-0.225, t=-2.206, p=0.029). Cronbach's alpha for the scale constructs ranged from 0.738 to 0.886. Advanced geriatric training may cultivate pre-doctoral and graduate students' deeper understanding and recognition of the intellectual and practical benefits that might arise from offering dentalcare to elderly people.

Prevalence and Patterns of Oral Mucosal Lesions Among Geriatric Patients in India: A Retrospective Study.

Geriatric dentistry plays a pivotal role in addressing the oral health needs of the elderly population, who are prone to various age-related disorders affecting the oral mucosa. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions among geriatric patients in India, considering factors, such as age, gender, and systemic diseases. A hospital-based retrospective study was conducted, analyzing medical and clinical examination records of 354 geriatric patients attending a dental college/hospital between 2022 and 2023. Data on demographics, systemic diseases, oral habits, and denture usage were collected, and oral mucosal lesions were classified according to the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. Among the 354 subjects examined, oral mucosal lesions were observed in 54.66% of cases. Leukoplakia (19.49%) and lichen planus (17.80%) were the most prevalent lesions, followed by malignancy (12.99%) and denture stomatitis (9.04%). The prevalence varied across age-groups, with higher rates observed in individuals aged 60-70 years. The study highlights the significant burden of oral mucosal lesions among geriatric patients in India, underscoring the need for targeted preventive strategies and comprehensive oral healthcare interventions tailored to the specific needs of elderly individuals.

Lack of Physician-Dentist Collaboration in Aspiration Pneumonia Prevention.

This opinion paper addresses the challenges and future directions for preventing aspiration pneumonia in Japan's rapidly aging population. It highlights the increasing proportion of elderly individuals and the associated rise in health issues like decreased swallowing function, a risk factor for aspiration pneumonia. The paper emphasizes the effectiveness of dentist-provided oral care in preventing this condition but notes the lack of collaboration between dentists and physicians in Japan's clinical practice. Key challenges identified include the scarcity of full-time hospital dentists, insufficient communication between physicians and dentists, limited patient understanding and motivation regarding oral care, and a lack of training in geriatric dentistry. The paper advocates for enhanced awareness among healthcare professionals and patients, increased hospital dentists, and improved collaboration mechanisms, particularly in light of recent positive changes in insurance reimbursement policies for elderly oral care.

Evaluation of the accuracy of fully guided implant placement by undergraduate students and postgraduate dentists: a comparative prospective clinical study

PurposeThis study aimed to assess the accuracy of implant placement through three-dimensional planning and fully guided insertion, comparing outcomes between undergraduate and postgraduate surgeons.MethodsThirty-eight patients requiring 42 implants in posterior single-tooth gaps were enrolled from the University Clinic for Prosthodontics at the Martin Luther University Halle Wittenberg and the Department of Prosthodontics, Geriatric Dentistry, and Craniomandibular Disorders of Charité University Medicine, Berlin. Twenty-two implants were placed by undergraduate students (n = 18), while 20 implants were placed by trainee postgraduate dentists (n = 5). Pre-operative intraoral scans and cone beam computed tomography images were performed for implant planning and surgical template fabrication. Postoperative intraoral scans were superimposed onto the original scans to analyze implant accuracy in terms of apical, coronal, and angular deviations, as well as vertical discrepancies.ResultsIn the student group, two implant insertions were performed by the assistant dentist because of intraoperative complications and, thus, were excluded from further analysis. For the remaining implants, no statistically significant differences were observed between the dentist and student groups in terms of apical (p = 0.245), coronal (p = 0.745), or angular (p = 0.185) implant deviations, as well as vertical discrepancies (p = 0.433).ConclusionsThis study confirms the viability of fully guided implant placement by undergraduate students, with comparable accuracy to postgraduate dentists. Integration into dental education can prepare students for implant procedures, expanding access and potentially reducing costs in clinical practice. Collaboration is essential for safe implementation, and future research should explore long-term outcomes and patient perspectives, contributing to the advancement of dental education and practice.Trial registration: DRKS, DRKS00023024, Registered 8 September 2020—Retrospectively registered, https://drks.de/search/de/trial/DRKS00023024.

Appointments Needed for Complete Denture for Frail Older Adults Residing in Long-Term Care Facilities: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Frail older adults who reside in long-term care (LTC) facilities face multiple barriers in receiving dental care. In edentulous LTC patients, the fabrication of complete dentures (CDs) can present challenges, leading to an increase in procedural or post-insertion appointments. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to document the number of fabrication and post-insertion follow-up appointments for CDs in frail older adults residing in LTC facilities. Data were collected from electronic patient records (AxiUm) and the Index of Clinical Oral Disorder in Elders (CODE) software utilized by the University of British Columbia Geriatric Dentistry Program from 2002 to 2018. A total of 362 CDs were fabricated between 2002 and 2018 in 272 patients. The mean number of visits required was 4.13 and 4.32, with standard deviations (Std) of 1.45 and 1.25 needed to fabricate maxillary CDs and mandibular CDs, respectively. The mean number of follow-up visits was 1.04 for maxillary dentures and 1.09 for mandibular dentures, with an Std of 1.25 for both, similar to the results obtained for adult patients in community dental clinics. Several factors were found to be associated with an increased number of CD fabrication and follow-up visits. Pre-operative assessment of the patient's cognitive/physical status and intra-oral condition may indicate the estimated time needed to fabricate CDs.

Exploring the acceptance of geriatric dentistry programming for undergraduate dental students through stakeholder interviews.

Older adults frequently report unmet oral healthcare needs. Current research suggests a lack of provider willingness to perform geriatric dental care plays a role in limiting older adults' access to dental services. To better understand the acceptance of geriatric dentistry programming in Ontario, and to explore considerations for successful implementation, we completed consultations with dental students and dental education stakeholders. Findings from a scoping review we conducted previously (Alicia C. Brandt and Cecilia S. Dong) were used to guide this research. Consultations involved a questionnaire and semi-structured individual interviews. Descriptive and parametric statistics such as Pearson's bivariate correlation and One-way analysis of variance were completed on questionnaire data using SPSS V.28. Interview data were transcribed verbatim, and the content was analyzed using emergent coding and thematic analysis in NVivo. Student and faculty data were analyzed separately and then consolidated. Ten students and 12 dental faculty members completed the questionnaire of which ten students and nine faculty members also participated in interviews. Themes were organized into barriers and facilitators, with a subsection on interprofessional collaboration. Barriers included: 1. Student anxiety and skill level; 2. Constraints of the learning environment; 3. Patient factors; and 4. Knowledge gaps. Facilitators included: 1. Learning environment and culture; 2. Volume of exposure; 3. Soft skills; and 4. Desired interventions. Both students and faculty stakeholders demonstrated acceptance of geriatric dentistry programming at the undergraduate dentistry level that supports improved access to care for this population. Pilot programs integrating different intervention elements which were viewed as most promising would be beneficial.

Ageism scale for dental students (ASDS): A focus group review of content validity.

Improve content validity of the Ageism Scale for Dental Students (ASDS) and identify barriers to using the scale. Thematic analysis of transcripts of three purposively sampled focus groups of 1) geriatric dentistry specialists, 2) older adult dental patients, and 3) dental students. Twenty-five participants engaged in focus groups. No new concepts to define ageism were identified. Experts found the scale acceptable and appropriate, yet they raised specific potential revisions to scale questions. Commonly reported themes already addressed by ASDS included the importance of tailoring decision-making to patient preference and not making assumptions about older adults' capacity or preferences for dental care. Barriers to identifying ageism or using the scale included experiential differences in interpreting scale items, cultural differences in attitudes towards older adults, and potential overlap with social determinants of health. Secondary findings include recommendations for older-adult focused training for dental students to provide positive, concrete guidance on caring for older adults. There are opportunities to refine the Ageism Scale for Dental Students and to allow tailoring of the scale for specific national or cultural contexts.

Exploring the knowledge, attitudes, and performance of dentists in providing care to elderly patients

BackgroundSupportive care and dental treatment for older adults are crucial in addressing the global emergency of population aging, requiring specialized healthcare services and knowledge-based practices.MethodsThis cross-sectional content analysis study was conducted on 150 general dentists in Kerman in 2021. The participants were selected using cluster sampling. The data were collected using a questionnaire with four sections assessing the participants’ demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes, and performance. The data were analyzed with SPSS-26 software using the t-test, ANOVA, and linear regression analysis.ResultsThe dentists’ mean age was 36.10 ± 7.60 years. The mean knowledge score of the participants was 5.29 ± 1.49 (out of 9). The mean attitude score was 59.42 ± 11.6 (out of 85), and the mean performance score was 24.13 ± 4.96 (out of a maximum of 35). The data showed a positive relationship between the dentists’ knowledge, attitudes, and performance. However, the participants’ gender had no significant correlation with their knowledge, attitudes, or performance. It was also shown that 50% of dentists had adequate experience treating elderly patients with complex medical problems.ConclusionsThe participants had an adequate level of knowledge and performance and a positive attitude toward dental care for older adults. Health officials and administrators need to organize and hold effective training and refresher courses on geriatric dentistry to promote dentists’ knowledge and performance.Trial registrationEthics code IR.KMU.REC.1401.007.

DENTAL PATIENT-REPORTED OUTCOMES IN GERIATRIC DENTISTRY : A call for clinical translation

As the proportion of older adults in the world population increases, there is an increasing need to provide adequate dental care for this very heterogeneous group of individuals. The relationship between oral and systemic health, the impact of medication on oral health, and the influence of accessibility to dental care and other social and environmental factors shape the provision of dental care for older adults more than in children, younger, and middle-aged adults.However, while dental care for older adults is shaped by these factors and is often different from the care for other adults, what matters to older dental patients does not differ from what matters to dental patients in general. The four dimensions of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL)–Oral Function, Orofacial Pain, Orofacial Appearance, and Psychosocial Impact–capture dental patients’ suffering from oral disorders. OHRQoL questionnaires can be used to assess this impact and to achieve results that are compatible with adults in general. More than in other age groups, cognitive impairments or dementia limit the usefulness of questionnaires or interviews for oral health impact assessment. In these situations, family members or caregivers can assess the patient's oral health impact, and oral health care providers need to rely more on physical oral health characteristics for clinical decision-making than in other dental patients. While the tools to measure oral health impact change, the targets for dental care stay the same. Prevention and reduction of functional, painful, aesthetical, and broader psychosocial impact related to oral disorders are the central tasks for geriatric dentistry as they are for dentistry in general.The aim of the manuscript is to highlight the importance of patient-reported outcome measures in geriatric dentistry, addressing challenges and opportunities for their application.

GERIATRICS IN HEALTH PROFESSIONS EDUCATION: A BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF 70 YEARS OF RESEARCH

Abstract To move forward in the field of Geriatrics in Health professions education (HPE), we must understand its conception and recognize current trends and future directions. Therefore, we conducted a bibliometric and network analysis of all studies indexed in the Scopus Database related to Geriatrics and HPE from 1953 to 2022. We retrieved 2940 studies comprising 7344 authors and 618 journals; these were imported to bibliometrics (RStudio) and Vos Viewer. To understand the intellectual structure, we employed a co-citation analysis; we identified 5 clusters that described fundamentals in geriatrics, nursing education, needs assessment, and interprofessional education (IPE). Furthermore, six topics were placed in the keyword co-occurrence, ranging from medical, nursing, dental, social workers, and interprofessional education. Consequently, we identified geriatrics education for medical students and interprofessional education between 2004 and 2016; furthermore, clinical competence was the most recent trending topic, accompanied by end-of-life care and geriatric psychiatry. In the evolution map, three topics emerged in the last ten years: IPE, online learning, and geriatric dentistry. These findings were confirmed in the bibliographic coupling analysis. Four major themes emerged among 13 clusters: IPE, Attitudes and career orientation to geriatrics, innovative educational methods such as gamification, and geriatric undergraduate education. Although we identified several studies, this barely represents the 1% of production in HPE. Furthermore, we identified a trend toward IPE, undergraduate medical education, career orientation, and innovative education. However, there is a lack of themes such as simulation and entrustable professional activities, with an underrepresentation of the developing world.

Validation of the Korean Academy of Geriatric Dentistry screening questionnaire and oral frailty diagnostic criteria in community-dwelling older adults.

This study aimed to establish the validity-specifically, the sensitivity and specificity-of the screening questionnaire and diagnostic criteria for oral frailty proposed by the Korean Academy of Geriatric Dentistry (KAGD) among community-dwelling older adults. This study enrolled 100 participants. Among various definitions of oral frailty, this study used the criteria proposed by Tanaka as the reference test. The screening questionnaire consisted of 11 items for screening physical frailty, chewing ability, swallowing difficulties, oral dryness, and tongue and lip motor function. Each question had a different scoring weight, and if the total score was 1 or higher, an oral frailty diagnostic examination proposed by the KAGD would be recommended. The diagnostic test was the oral frailty diagnostic criteria proposed by the KAGD including 6 measures: chewing ability, occlusal force, tongue pressure, oral dryness, swallowing difficulty, and oral hygiene. If a participant exhibited 2 or more positive measures, this participant was classified as "oral frail." The screening questionnaire was analyzed using a cut-off value of 1 or higher, while the diagnostic criteria utilized a cut-off of 2 or more positive measures. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated. The screening questionnaire showed significant power for screening oral frailty (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.783; sensitivity, 87.8%; specificity, 52.5%). The diagnostic accuracy of the newly proposed diagnostic criteria was acceptable (sensitivity, 95.1%; specificity, 42.4%). The newly proposed screening questionnaire and diagnostic criteria in Korea appear to be a useful tool to identify oral frailty in community-dwelling older adults.
