Memorial to the late Dr. W. C. Unwin

BY the older engineers of the present day, the late Prof. W. C. Unwin will be remembered as an outstanding figure in the fields of engineering education and the practical application of scientific principles to the needs of civil and mechanical engineers. In his long career, which covered the latter half of the last century and the first quarter of the present, he witnessed the greater part of the evolution of engineering as we know it to-day, and in all the branches of the profession with which he was more directly concerned he occupied a pre-eminent position. He died on March 17, 1933, aged ninety-four years; an appreciation of his life and work appeared in NATURE of May 13, 1933 (p. 681). A representative committee, under the chairmanship of Sir Alfred Chatterton, of Unwin's friends and old students, supported by representatives of the Royal Society, the principal British and American engineering societies and of the educational organisations with which he was connected, has now been formed for the purpose of establishing a suitable memorial. The committee is endeavouring to raise funds for the founding of an Unwin scholarship at the City and Guilds (Engineering) College, of which Unwin was the first professor of civil and mechanical engineering and the first dean, and to publish a biographical memoir based upon the one which was published in the Unwin Memorial issue of the Central, the journal of the City and Guilds College Old Students' Association, and so make available a record which so far has only been published for private circulation. Centenary of the Death of Thomas Telford

ON September 2, Sir Henry Maybury, president of the Institution of Civil Engineers, placed a wreath on the tomb of Telford in Westminster Abbey, while Mr. W. H. Budgett, divisional inspector in Scotland for the Ministry of Transport, placed a laurel wreath at the memorial seat at Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire. Born at Westerkirk in 1757, Telford was educated at the parish school, and when fourteen years old was apprenticed as a mason. Down to 1783 he was a workman employed in his native district of Eskdale. Leaving home, he studied architectural and structural design at Edinburgh, proceeding afterwards to London, when he embarked upon the career which ultimately brought him fame and honour. The Institution of Civil Engineers began to take shape in 1818, and on February 3, 1820, the group who were fostering a scheme of association resolved to ask Telford to become their first president. Telford accepted, and gave an inaugural address, providing his colleagues with much counsel for the future. At the same time, he presented a large collection of books and drawings with the object of founding a library. There is a fine portrait of Telford in the Institutions house at Great George Street, by Lane, showing him seatedin the background is a view of Menai Bridge. Most of the exhibits of the Telford Centenary Exhibition in London have been re-arranged at Aberdeen for the benefit of members of the British Association.

The New Rooms of the Royal Society of Edinburgh

ON Monday, November 8, the new rooms of the Royal Society of Edinburgh were formally opened by an appropriate inaugural address from the president, Sir William Turner, followed by a brilliant reception. For the purposes of the reception the ordinary meeting-room was transformed into the cloak-room, and the president's address was delivered in the Freemasons' Hall, a few blocks further west in George Street. After the address the audience re-assembled in the society's new abode, and had every opportunity of inspecting the arrangements which had been made for the accommodation of the large and growing library and for other possessions of the society.

XXIV. Notes on Excavations in Glasgow

I have always thought it a pity that important facts regarding the surface geology of the city area, which are brought to light from time to time in connection with the excavations for the foundations of new buildings, deep-level drains, or other openings, should be allowed to go unrecorded for want of some one who would undertake to keep an eye upon them; and as I have for some time been making notes on recent exposures, I propose to-night to give you a short paper on the subject, in continuation of at least one previous one which I read before the Society.* In these days of rapid building, the opportunity for seeing an underground exposure is often extremely limited; at the utmost, a few weeks, perhaps curtailed to days, or even hours, and if the chance is lost it may be long before a similar one occurs. I shall therefore be extremely obliged if any of the members will give me early information about such openings, so that I may be able to record the observable data, be they few or many. Those excavations of which I have taken some notes, though unfortunately not so many as I could have wished, from want of time, are five in number, as follows:—(1) the corner of Trongate and Nelson Street; (2) the Arcade Frontage, Buchanan Street; (3) the Extension of the Fruit Bazaar, Nelson Street; (4) the Technical College, George Street; and (5) the corner of Trongate and Candleriggs. 1.
