Portraying the Bangladesh Shrimp Industry: A SWOT Analysis

The Bangladesh shrimp industry plays a vital role in the country’s economy by exhibiting a complex interplay of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. A significant strength is the extensive coastal region which provides a natural habitat conducive to shrimp cultivation. It gains a competitive edge globally with a skilled workforce and low production costs. The industry benefits from geographical indication certification, accredited labs, upgraded facilities, and financial support, highlighting its robust strengths. However, intrinsic weaknesses such as inadequate infrastructure, limited technological integration, and susceptibility to disease outbreaks impede its full potential. To amplify its reach, the industry should consider adopting advanced aquaculture methods, expanding its value-added goods, optimizing supply chains, and acquiring international certifications. However, the industry faces challenges owing to climate-induced disruptions, diseases, trade barriers, and market fluctuations. By investing comprehensively in infrastructure, technology, disease control, and regulatory compliance, Bangladesh’s shrimp industry can solidify its position as a robust, ethical, and competitive player in the global seafood market.

Understanding Purchase Intention of Fair Trade Handicrafts through the Lens of Geographical Indication and Fair Trade Knowledge in a Brand Equity Model

This study aims to investigate the effects of geographical indication (GI) and fair trade knowledge (FTK) on U.S. female consumers’ perceived brand equity and the purchase intention of fair trade apparel handicrafts. Employing a web-based experiment and survey, the study divided participants into groups exposed to brands with and without GI certification marks. A total of 206 responses were collected. A perceived brand equity model was developed, featuring elements such as perceived quality (PQ), brand awareness (BA), brand association (BS), uniqueness (UQ), and willingness to pay a price premium (PP). Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data and validate the hypotheses. The results revealed that consumers are willing to pay a price premium for products with GI and that FTK positively impacts brand equity. Furthermore, FTK had an interactive effect with GI, enhancing PQ and BS. Increased scores in BS, UQ, and PP were also found to positively affect purchase intention. This study fills a research gap by quantitatively examining the relationship between GI, FTK, brand equity, and purchase intention in the domain of fair trade apparel handicrafts. The findings offer strategic insights for enterprises and organizations in the fair trade handicrafts sector.

The effects of quality certification on agricultural low-carbon production behavior: evidence from Chinese rice farmers

ABSTRACTLow-carbon agricultural practices have received increasing attention, and the rapid development of agricultural product quality certification in China has provided a potential way to implement low-carbon agriculture. This study employs an endogenous switching regession to examine the effects of quality certification on low-carbon production behaviors using the survey data of 1,042 rice farmers in Hubei Province, China. The empirical results show that, first, the quality certification participation has a positive and statistically significant impact on farmers’ low-carbon production behaviors. In particular, the treatment effect of quality certification participation is to increase farmers’ low-carbon production level to appropriately 71.85%. Second, a disaggregated analysis by quality certification type reveals no significant difference between public geographical indication certification and private green food and organic product certification in promoting farmers’ low-carbon production behaviors. Nevertheless, the effect of multiple certifications on low-carbon production behaviors is significantly stronger than that of single certification. Third, disaggregated analysis indicates that new agricultural business entities are more likely to implement low-carbon production after participating in quality certification than traditional farmers.

Protection and Management of Gayo Arabica Coffee in the Laws and Regulations of Central Aceh Regency

Coffee is one of the leading commodities in the plantation subsector because it has market opportunities, both domestically and abroad. Gayo Coffee (English: Gayo Coffee) is a variety of arabica coffee that is one of the leading commodities originating from the Gayo Plateau. Gayo Coffee has received Fair Trade Certified™ from the International Fair Trade Organization on May 27, 2010, and has also received an IG (Geographical Indication) certificate submitted by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) Republic of Indonesia. People living in the Gayo highlands until now live dependent on coffee, butuntil now there are still problems experienced by gayo coffee farmers, such as the condition of coffee selling prices that are still unstable, and tend to plummet. Therefore, the problems experienced by gayo coffee farmers should be accommodated in a law, especially at the regional level. So that problems that occur like this are not experienced continuously and protracted by coffee farmers from year to year. Based on the background that has been described, the formulation of the problem in this study is what things must be contained in Qanun so that can it provide protection for the management of gayo arabica coffee in Central Aceh Regency? The research method used in this study is normative juridical research, which is carried out through literature studies that examine (mainly) secondary data in the form of laws and regulations, or other legal documents, research results, assessment results, and other references. The results showed that the things that need to be contained in Qanun protection for the management of gayo arabica coffee include arrangements about gayo arabica coffee ecosystem, gayo coffee commerce and cultivation, international cooperation, coffee research and education centers, customary institutions related to the protection and management of gayo arabica coffee, tourism and coffee villages, Geographical Indication certification, and Coffee Regionally Owned Enterprises (BUMD). The suggestion from the researcher is that Central Aceh Regency should have a regulation in the form of Qanun which regulates the protection and management of Gayo Arabica Coffee, because this area is an area that is a source of coffee and has become the lifeblood of the people in Gayo.

Geographical indication differentiation to traditional medicinal and aromatic plants used in ayurvedic medicines for reputation and recognition of their superior pharmaceutical quality, clinical efficacy and economic value

Background: Traditional knowledge is essentially important for the health of millions of people in developing countries. India stands as the largest producer of medicinal plants. Medicinal plants described in Ayurvedic classics are traditional medicinal plants (TMAPs). TMAPs, their traditional geographical origin (TGO), their pharmaceutical qualities, and their clinical effects are interdependent entities. Presently, Ayurvedic medicines are in a pharmaceutical quality crisis therefore their clinical efficacy is not sustained. Geographical indication (GI) is a globally exercised intellectual property right (IPR). It has an impact on the trade of Ayurvedic medicines. GI differentiation to TMAPs used in Ayurvedic medicines is the need of time. Aim: Enlighten the scope of GI differentiation to TMAPs used in Ayurvedic medicines for reputation and recognition of their superior pharmaceutical quality, clinical efficacy and economic value. Method: Literature searches on the electronic online databases are carried done for the study. Result: TGO of TMAPs having special medicative health are eligible for enrollment and conservation under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 in India. Some 30 TMAPs have received GI certification in India. The Chinese concept of geo-authentic botanicals (GAB) and the European concept of designation of origin (DO) and appellation of origin (AO) are special classes of GI. Conclusion: GI responsibly promotes TMAPs internationally and globally. GAB is superior to other pharmaceutical qualities. Better the pharmaceutical qualities of TMAPs better are the clinical effect of Ayurvedic medicines. GI doubles the monetary standard of the product. It also protects the herbal landraces and prevents the risk of losing TMAPs uniqueness.

Karakteristik dan Kinerja Subakabian di Tiga Kabupaten Anggota MPIG Kopi Arabika Kintamani

Compared to subak, subakabian literature/study is still rarely considered in development. In fact, sub-abian plays an important role in the development of one of the leading commodities in Bali, namely Kintamani Arabica Coffee which has received geographical indication certification since 2008. This study aims to analyze the characteristics and performance of sub-abian in the three regencies of MPIG Kintamani Arabica Coffee, as well as compare the characteristics and subakabian performance between the three districts. Characteristics and performance of the subakabian were identified based on Mackay's theory, then analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively through the RRA approach and the calculation of economic impact analysis. The results showed that the subakabians in the research location had the characteristics of binding each other with the traditional village; have the right of autonomy; adaptive to technological developments; subakabaian manners are bound by professional, geographical, and historical unity; based on the philosophy of tri hita karana; based on the principles of togetherness and mutual cooperation; leadership and decision-making are democratic; neoclassical agricultural organization with low formalization; and legal norms with dominant social meaning in subakabian, namely customary law. Subakabian's performance has been effective in achieving its goals and efficiently using resources so as to be able to provide local economic impact. Differences in subakabian members of the Kintamani Arabica Coffee MPIG between Bangli Districts; Buleleng Regency; and Badung Regency is only concerned with local government support and technical implementation of social culture.

Current Scenario of GI Certified Mango Varieties in India

This article puts emphasis on varieties of Mangoes with Geographical Indication (GI) certification in India and also discusses the characteristics and uniqueness of each certified variety. GI one of the most important laws in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) that protects a product’s specific geographical origin with an GI Tag. Mango (Mangifera indica) is a popular member of Anacardiaceae family and one of the most critical and cultivated crops in the world, with exotic qualities due to its origin. Indian climate is very favorable for Mango production, and this makes India the largest exporter of mangoes across the globe. In India, a total of 417 products were registered with GI, out of which 129 were in the agriculture product’s category. Twelve Mango varieties have been GI registered, and seven Mango varieties are under the process of GI Certification. GI-certified products have the potential for rural development because of their domestic and global demand.

Understanding the Role of Indigenous Peoples in Preserving Cianjur Pandanwangi Rice as a Product of Local Wisdom to Obtain Geographical Indication Certificates

Pandanwangi Cianjur rice which has a distinctive taste, as good quality rice because it is the result of rice varieties with special characteristics that are influenced by geographical and cultural conditions from Cianjur blood so that Pandanwangi rice is categorized as a product of local wisdom in Cianjur Regency and has received a Geographical Indication certification. (IG) from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia. However, the ownership of this certificate does not guarantee an increase in the economy that is exploited from Pandanwangi rice because the Regional Government has not provided maximum assistance and guidance so that the community takes advantage of the potential of Pandanwangi rice as an economically viable source of income. Therefore, it is necessary to socialize and foster from various parties, especially from academics through community empowerment activities to understand the existence of Cianjur pandanwangi rice as part of local wisdom products so that it is maintained as a cultural value and can provide economic benefits for the local community.

Consumers’ preferences for North Sumatera specialty coffees

The distinctive and special taste of Indonesian coffees has been renowned in the world coffee market. In the coffee’s production system at the farm level, the term specialty coffee typically refers to sustainable coffee. To keep up and maintain the uniqueness of specialty coffees’ tastes, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) of Indonesia has issued the Geographical Indication certification on coffees. Understanding consumers’ preferences are very important to be able to identify the market, enabling producers and businesses to promote their products in a better way. This study revealed the consumers’ preferences for North Sumatera specialty coffees and investigate the problems in marketing them. The conclusions are: the coffee’s taste is the most important factor for consumers in deciding the coffee shop to buy specialty coffees; the medium acidity level (sour taste) is the most important factor for consumers in choosing specialty coffees to buy; and consumers prefer Sidikalang Robusta coffee the most, followed by Sumatera Mandheling and Sumatera Simalungun Arabica coffee.

Does Geographical Indication Certification Increase the Technical Complexity of Export Agricultural Products?

As a special intellectual property right, geographical indications have obvious regional quality signals and reputation. Whether geographical indication certification can promote the technical complexity of export agricultural products in the process of high-quality agricultural transformation in developing countries is a new issue that has to be studied urgently. Therefore, based on the provincial panel data from 2005 to 2019, this research examines the impact of geographical indication certification on the technical complexity of China’s export agricultural products. The empirical results reveal that geographic indication certification can significantly improve the technical complexity of export agricultural products. Moreover, the positive spillover effect of geographical indications on the export of agricultural products is strengthened as the level of the technical complexity of products increases. However, the regression coefficient at the 85% quantile decreases, reflecting that the current international recognition of geographical indication certification in China needs improvement. The heterogeneity study finds that the above results are not significantly supported by evidence in the central region. Thus, the quality guidance role of geographical indication products in the central region has not been brought into full play, thereby restraining the price addition ability of export agricultural products. Therefore, the government should increase policy support to enhance the quality guidance role of geographical indication products.

A Multidimensional Approach in Assessing Geographical Indication Product Sustainability: Salak Pondoh Sleman

Salak Pondoh Sleman (SPS) is an exotic fruit which has geographical indication certification, a sign indicating the unique characteristics inherent in a product due to the influence of its geographical origin. Its unique characteristics can only be found in certain areas. Thus, it is necessary to consider the concept of sustainable agricultural development of the product, involving several dimensions such as environmental, organizational, and technological. The study aimed to assess the sustainability of SPS as a product with geographical indication certification and identify the most influential sustainability attributes in the selected dimensions. A rapid appraisal method of the multidimensional scaling technique was performed to achieve the objective of this study, further mentioned as RAPSalacca. The result showed that the sustainability level of SPS plantation system was classified as ‘quite sustainable,’ with a sustainability index of 59.83. Furthermore, the sustainability analysis of the selected dimensions denoted the important attributes to the sustainability in each dimension, which is further explained in this paper.

Product characterization of a traditional sausage aiming at geographical indication certification and entrepreneurship prospects: an empirical study of Goan “choris”

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is the physico-chemical, microbiological, colorimetric, sensorial characterization of choris, a traditional smoked pork sausage produced in the state of Goa (India), including its storage stability (0–180 days) at room temperature, aiming at the geographical indication certification and entrepreneurship prospects.Design/methodology/approachA total of 48 samples of “choris” were collected from 24 villages of Goa and were analyzed at different intervals (0–180 days) for physico-chemical, proximate, microbiological, colorimetric and sensory attributes during the storage at room temperature.FindingsThe mean pH of 4.45 and water activity (aw) of 0.78 were recorded. The pH, tyrosine value, fat percentage and free fatty acid content registered a significant increase, whereas moisture content, aw and moisture–protein ratio reduced as storage progresses. The colorimetric values lightness (L*), hue angle (H*) and redness index values reduced significantly during storage. The mean total viable count, yeast and mold, and lactic acid bacteria count were found to proliferate significantly as storage advanced. Nevertheless, the hedonic scores not reaching an unacceptable level (= 4) at the end of the storage period.Originality/valueIn accordance with the various parameters adopted during the study, choris could be characterized as “naturally fermented dry smoked” sausages, which were shelf-stable at room temperature for 180 days. The product characterization of choris is essential to guarantee the genuineness, safety and consumer's acceptability. This study will also rebound in an augmented uniformity of the product, which will favor the geographical indication certification and the entrepreneurship prospects of this traditional product.

Economic risk assessment of the quality labels and productive efficiency strategies in Spanish extensive sheep farms

CONTEXTThe socio-economic decline of extensive sheep farming caused by its low profitability in southern European Union (EU) regions threatens marginal depopulated rural areas' survival. In the face of new future institutional and climate challenges, there appears to be an urgent need for strategies to improve economic performance. OBJECTIVEThis paper aims to evaluate the economic performance and risk of two alternative demand-oriented and productive efficiency strategies: i) protected geographical indication certification, and ii) increased ewe reproduction prolificacy. MethodBased on regional farm records and price data and a survey of 54 local farmers, we formulated a stochastic gross margin model to simulate and analyze four strategic scenarios (baseline, quality labelling, productive efficiency, and joint strategies) under two specific stressors, namely decreased lamb prices and increased feeding costs. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONSWe found that feeding costs constitute the main risk factor, whereas price instability has less influence. Our findings highlight improvements in performance under a quality scenario, albeit with higher vulnerability to price variability with respect to the baseline scenario. In contrast, the productive efficiency scenario performs much better in terms of average gross margin and reduced vulnerability to feeding costs, albeit with a larger variation for the expected outcomes. SIGNIFICANCEThe paper casts light on the vulnerability of the quality label under price risk, and suggests the potential for the joint implementation of both quality production and productive efficiency strategies, which could compensate for their respective weaknesses.

Stakeholders’ Participatory Framework in Rice Agribusiness

Objective – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the ways rice producers work with other stakeholders to maximize business potential of rice agribusiness by identifying problems, suggesting solutions, and developing a stakeholders’ participatory framework as a guideline tool for the implementation. Methodology/Technique – We conducted a mixed method of qualitative and quantitative research, which was structured in accordance with participatory processes. First, we identified rice agribusiness underlying problem from the supply side through interview to the rice producer and retail observation; and from the demand side by assessing consumer preference through focus group discussion followed by survey to 396 respondents using conjoint analysis. Then, we held stakeholders dialogue involving 56 farmers and 17 cooperative employees. Findings – This research identified key stakeholders and the way they participate in 3 areas of rice agribusiness, i.e., rice production, skill and knowledge, and marketing strategy to position the authentic characteristics of Pandan Wangi rice from West Java, Indonesia with Geographical Indication certification as signal of quality for its target market. THE ROLE OF THE GEOGRAPHIC INDICATION CERTIFICATION OF ARABIC COFFEE AS AN EFFORT OF LOCAL FARMERS

The demand for coffee in Indonesia is relatively high because Indonesia is the fourth largest coffee producing country in the world. This indicates that there is a change in the lifestyle of world coffee consumers who prioritizes health and environmental sustainability. The development of sustainable coffee farming is carried out by increasing the quality and productivity of the coffee harvest through the Geographical Indication Certification program. The results show that the Geographical Indication Certification Strategy in empowering local farmers is the SO (Strength-Opportunities) Strategy, namely: 1) Making the Geographical Indication area an ecotourism area through the development of integrated arabica coffee-based agribusiness (2) Facilitating and stimulating investment in industrial development directed at increasing competitiveness through fostering improvement in the quality and appearance of products in Arabica coffee and other derivative products. Thus, it is necessary to have consistent quality control from the government so that products received by consumers follow the Geographical Indication label.

The benefits of geographical indication certification through farmer organizations on low-income farmers: the case of Hoa Vang sticky rice in Vietnam

Origin labeling and quality upgrading through farmer organizations have been considered as solutions to reduce transaction costs and improve market bargaining power. This paper explores whether belonging to a farmer organization that improves and signals quality can help increase yields and household incomes of small-scale farmers for a specific quality product, Hoa Vang sticky rice in Vietnam. The paper is based on primary data on 185 households collected in 2013 and on 149 households collected in 2015. Different econometric methods were applied to investigate the effect based on rice yield, rice income and household income as the outcome variables. The results show that membership of farmer organization does not significantly improve household income compared to non-membership. However, members of farmer organizations have less resources in terms of land and inputs than non-members. These results suggest that the economic results achieved by farmers with fewer opportunities to access markets are similar to those obtained by farmers with more opportunities thanks to the involvement of farmer organizations in marketing. The specificities of the Hoa Vang sticky rice are still not reflected in higher farmer sales prices and incomes. More dialogue between farmer organizations and their customers is thus required, as well as better public control of labeling fraud.

Determinants of purchase intention of traditional handloom apparels with geographical indication among Indian consumers

Purpose Consumers often face a dilemma regarding the purchase decisions of traditional handloom apparel because of the non-availability of information cues that would enable them to assess the quality of the product. The spread of counterfeit products in the market adds to information asymmetry. The study aims to examine factors influencing purchase intention of traditional handloom apparel that have Geographical Indication (GI) certification, which follows the certification procedure specified by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). Design/methodology/approach A survey was conducted among 202 traditional handloom apparel consumers in India and the data was analysed using structural equation modelling. The purchase intention of GI certified handloom apparels was examined as the dependent variable, whereas quality consciousness, product diagnosticity, perceived information asymmetry were placed as independent variables. The mediating role of perceived quality and product trust in the relation between perceived information asymmetry and purchase intention was also looked into. Findings Results reveal that quality consciousness positively influences product diagnosticity (facilitated by the GI label certification) which in turn reduces perceived information asymmetry. Further, a reduction in perceived information asymmetry was found to increase the purchase intention of traditional handloom apparel, fully mediated by the perceived quality and product trust. Research limitations/implications The customers who are facing a dearth of information while making purchase of traditional handlooms will be benefitted from the GI certification label which provides authenticity regarding product attributes confirming quality. Further, the study adds to the theory by establishing the relation between quality consciousness and perceived information asymmetry. Practical implications The findings imply that GI handloom apparel sellers should design marketing strategies that would project GI certification labels for traditional handloom apparel to effectively communicate product quality attributes, thus enhance product diagnosticity reducing information asymmetry. While organic certification for agricultural products is done at the individual producer’s level, GI certification is done under the producer’s collective label. Further, studies may be extended to agricultural products (Darjeeling tea, Alphonso mangoes, etc.), food items (rasgulla, Thirupathi laddoo, etc.) and handicrafts (Aranmula Mirror, Payyannur pavithra ring) that have acquired GI label in India. GI certification is adopted worldwide and studies may be extended to such products also [example Parma ham (Italy), Hessian wine (Germany)]. Originality/value Empirical research on determinants of consumer purchase intentions of GI certified traditional handloom apparel is a novel attempt done in the context of a developing country such as India. The study brings out the importance of the GI certification label envisaged by the WIPO, which can serve as a tool for reducing uncertainties faced by consumer in framing purchasing intentions. This can be extended to any product type such as agricultural, food products and handicrafts that has acquired GI certifications in different countries. The study revealed that product diagnosticity (through GI certification) could reduce perceived information asymmetry that leads the consumer to the perception of quality and product trust which results in the purchase intention of traditional handloom apparel. The outcomes of the study can be instrumental in designing marketing strategies for capturing market share.

Peran pemerintah daerah dalam mendukung potensi indikiasi geografis produk pertanian

The recording of Geographical Indications itself has benefits that can increase the economic benefits of the product. Registration of Geographical Indication Certification can increase the potential of a product of biological wealth. The advantage that is obtained if a product is protected by Geographical Indications is that the product will be superior and have higher competitiveness compared to similar products. The local government of Malang Regency and local farming communities in Malang Regency have awareness regarding the protection of Geographical Indications. One of the programs launched by the government through the Ministry of Law and Human Rights is the Increase in the Number of Geographical Indications. Registration of Geographical Indications not only gives an economic increase, but also has a long impact on the progress of the tourism sector as one of the superior programs that the Malang Regency Government wants to achieve. This research is a juridical empirical research with a qualitative interpretation. Research using the empirical method means that the research is carried out directly in the field to identify problems and find solutions to problems that occur. Indication of the geographical origin of honey using its physicochemical characteristics and multivariate analysis.

Honey from different botanical sources presents a great variability in chemical composition, physical properties, and sensorial attributes. The association between honey qualities and its geographical origin allows the recognition of honey, and beekeepers are economically benefited. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of honey produced in Ortigueira, Brazil and to compare it with the honey produced in the neighboring localities for the request of geographical indication certification. In the 112 honey samples collected between 2010 and 2013 from Ortigueira and the neighboring localities, moisture acidity, pH, hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF), diastase activity (DA), sugars, proline (Pro), electrical conductivity (EC), color absorbance at 635nm (C635), and Cielab color parameters were evaluated. HMF, reducing sugars (RS), total sugars (TS), proline, and color parameters (L*, a* and b*) were significantly different in Ortigueira 2010 honey seasons. Principal component analysis separated assapeixe (Vernonia sp) and capixingui (Croton floribundus) honeys from wild honeys (polyfloral). In addition, HMF, RS, L*, and lactonic acidity values promoted the separation between assapeixe and capixingui honeys. Ortigueira honey differs significantly from honeys from neighboring locality in pH, proline, HMF, DA, EC, RS, sucrose, TS, free and total acidity, and color parameters (C635, L*, a*, b*). The multivariate analysis applied to variables was efficient to discriminate honeys from different botanical sources and different locals, and is recommended for studies on the geographical indication of honey.

The Influence of Certificaton of Gayo Coffee Geographical Indication Against Value Added of Coffee In Gayo Highlands, Aceh

Indonesia is the third largest coffee producing country in the world after Brazil and Vietnam. Coffee is one of the main commodities that bring foreign exchange for Indonesia. The natural characteristics of the Gayo Highlands, located in Aceh province, are particularly suitable for Arabica coffee plants. Gayo Coffee has been successfully sold to the International market with a strong and complex flavor and good viscosity. To avoid improper trade practices, Gayo Coffee currently has a Geographical Indication Certification or known as (GI) that has been running since the end of 2009. This study examines how GI's influence on the value-added chain that occurs in the Gayo Coffee trade process. The data collection method that will be used in this research is by directly interview with GI stakeholders, conduct a direct survey of the value chain actors and also make observations on farmers by participatory observation. The result is that GI does not affect the change of Gayo Coffee value chain, but GI has increased the value added of coffee by increasing the selling price of coffee from each value chain actor.
