Research Hotspots and Trends in Chinese Academic Abstracts (2000-2022)

As an integral part of academic papers, abstracts play a more and more role in the process of further internationalization and standardization of academic journals. In recent years, the academic circle of the academic paper abstract part of the research continues to heat up. This paper uses CiteSpace visualization tool to visually analyze the annual publication trend, highly cited literature and keyword frequency of the abstract of domestic academic papers from 2000 to 2022, aiming to sort out the research hotspots and research trends of the abstract of domestic academic papers. The research found that: (1) since 2000, the focus of domestic scholars on academic abstracts has changed from the writing standard of English and Chinese abstracts to genre analysis; (2) the research focus focuses on interdisciplinary comparative research and the comparative research of abstracts written by Chinese and foreign authors in the same discipline; (3) the genre research of popular subjects in artificial intelligence, big data and biotechnology has not been carried out in the world.

Ethnohistory and <i>etnicheskaia istoriia</i>: outer similarities and inner differences

Soviet ethnic history (etnicheskaia istoriia) and North American ethnohistory share not only similar names but also similar methods, such as the collection of interdisciplinary sources and the synthesis of collected information by ethnographers/anthropologists. However, on the inside, differences substantially exceed similarities. Thus, the foundation of the Soviet research genre is a primordial understanding of ethnicity where the focus is the past of either indigenous groups or industrialized peoples, whereas the North American genre is principally concerned with the continuity of group identities. In these genres, disciplinary development crises were also handled differently: ethnohistorians, while occupying a rather marginal position within anthropology, nevertheless quite radically expanded the geographical and subject areas of their research, whereas in the works of ethnohistorians, on the contrary, the discussion of theoretical issues nearly ceased. This situation is due to the different modes of functioning of science and research scholarship in the respective societies, as well as different degrees of involvement in interactions with various levels of the governmental structure.

Digitality in the Open Science age: practices and genres

No matter where we are in the revolution versus evolution debate, digitality has undoubtedly brought about radical changes of practices and genres. Today digital genres born in the Internet age as New Media resources (science news reports or science blogs) compete with a traditional print-based genre of a research article. Although few works have synthesized the interaction of these “old” and “newly-born” genres, the Open Science digitality context has not received considerable treatment in genre scholarship, and little attention has been given to such features of scientific genres as multimodality, interdiscursivity, participatory culture. Thus, the relevance is in the reconceptualization of the Open Science practices and classifying the Internet-born genres of science communication. The qualitative method of discourse analysis is used in the lens of the social semiotic and the social genre theory proposed by the New Rhetoric School. As a result, four groups are suggested: research genres, promotional genres, trans-scientific genres, presentational genres. As a result of the analysis, we have come to the following conclusions. First, hybridization penetrates all the discourse and language levels: written discourse is combined with oral discourse, scientific style – with spoken style, scientific discourse – with journalism. Second, multimodality competes with the writing-based space, thus getting the potential of a meaning-making tool. As a result, the concept “science” has been reconsidered; science has become not only the professional community property but an active area of engagement with other fields and audiences in the process of science popularization. Digitality serves more than a medium and genres are not only recontextualized but gained more complexity.

A Linguocognitive approach to the analysis of the interpreter’s language personality in an interpreting situation

The present article is devoted to the problem of applying a linguocognitive approach to the analysis of the linguistic personality of an interpreter/conference interpreter. The use of the linguocognitive approach seems to the author to be the most promising direction in view of the possibility of applying a comprehensive analysis of the interpreter’s verbal and non-verbal behavior. The conducted analysis − the study of the functional side of the linguistic personality at the moment of interpretation − contributes to the progress in the field of the national cognitive translation studies.The research aims to analyze the audiovisual series of simultaneous interpretations, which leads to the use of modern research methods in the analysis of verbal markers and the “unnoticed background”, including, on the one hand, the discursive features of linguistic personality in various sections of the language, and on the other hand, − intertextuality and creation of new meanings. The relevance of the linguocognitive approach in linguopersonology is due to the insufficiently studied mechanisms of comprehensive analysis of linguistic personality in general, as well as a rather limited number of studies of this kind.The author presents her view on the possibilities of applying linguocognitive analysis for a reliable and verifiable results of the interview genre research. The article describes the complexity and multi-dimensionality of the genre under study, reveals the destabilizing factors in the performance of interpretation that affect the manifestation of a linguistic personality, provides criteria for evaluating sounding speech, and the extent of its influence on the representation of linguistic personality, and, consequently, the success of the interpretation.The proposed approach to the study of the representation of the linguistic personality of an interpreter allows for linguistic and extralinguistic analysis, to study the verbal and nonverbal behavior of speakers, to assess the quality of translation, typologize translation errors, identify the features of prosody and non-verbal behaviour. In addition, the author introduces the term “an interpreting situation” in relation to the context of the study, describes the stages and the parameters of the source text analysis (translation degree) and destabilizing factors that affect the results of the study. The experimental study confirmed the prospects for the application of the linguocognitive approach; the representation of the interpreter/conference interpreter in the genre of television interview is marked by a special typical variety of text: a combination of journalistic and colloquial styles, the use of elliptical constructions, modality, syntactic and lexical repetitions.

Knowledge generation between design, data and theory

Design-based research (DBR) is a diversified research genre: The combination of two worlds – that of research and that of education – and the different backgrounds and intentions of those involved entail different emphases, epistemological ideas, ideas on valuable outcomes and normative claims. This becomes visible in very different kinds of reasoning: No uniform structure of argumentation can be discerned, and so far, a differentiation into clear DBR types has not been convincingly achieved. This is a challenge for the orientation of DBR novices, the quality review of DBR studies, and the legitimation of DBR in the field of educational research. This article provides an empirical contribution to the discussion on argumentation: In a literature review, DBR studies are examined regarding their outcomes, the rationales authors use to justify their outcomes and indications for specific challenges in DBR reasoning. The analysis confirms for the sample that preliminary, prescriptive theory is most common alongside diverse practical outcomes. Authors often justify them with emphasis on variation, iteration, cooperation, and data triangulation. Different (standard) orientations, multi-level reasoning, and sub-studies present challenges for authors and readers, going back to the complexity of DBR projects. To justify their results in a comprehensible way, authors are confronted with the task to actively select an argumentation strategy.

Medical Research Genres in the English Academic Discourse

Introduction. The research article in English has recently been under scrutiny by theoretical and applied linguists. The understanding of research article is heterogeneous: it can be defined as a scientific manuscript, an independent text type or a separate genre. In Russian academic discourse the concept of the research article usually implies a scientific publication with the definite word count which is less than a monograph. However, this broad definition comprises a variety of heterogeneous genres. The English academic discourse, on the contrary, specifies research genres manifested in Research, Review, Editorial, Commentary, Clinical Case Report and other text names. Additionally, these research genres can vary according to the scientific discipline. The objective of this paper is to identify and classify academic research genres in medical discourse.Methodology and sources. The research corpus was collected from the original highimpact open-access medical journals, i.e., Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, British Medical Journal, Clinical Infectious Diseases, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Brain, Pediatrics, Diabetes, Heart, Journal of Neuroscience. The research procedure involved contextual, semantic and comparative analysis of the journal requirements on the article type and content presented in typical sections About the Journal, Authors Guidelines and Table of Contents.Results and discussion. The analysis has led to the development of differential parameters for further research genres classification. The findings have shown that a variety of research papers under different names can be classified as a system of research genres in the academic discourse represented by medical research publications. We have also found distinct correlations between medical journal requirements and linguistic characteristics of medical research genres.Conclusion. The academic medical discourse functions in a wide spectrum of article types, which can be classified as medical research genres according to discourse parameters.

From a cognitive point of view, literary genres do not exist regardless of their perception; they should be embodied in the reader’s mind. The purpose of cognitive genre study is to consider genre as a form of mental representation. According to our hypothesis, this representation combines figurative and propositional ways of encoding information. There is no doubt that the reconstruction of the mental representation of the genre in the mind of the reader requires an experimental study. This article publishes the results of a pilot experiment conducted among university students of pedagogical specialties of the Faculty of Psychological, Pedagogical and Special Education of Saratov University and school students of Saratov. The experimental data show that the representation of the genre in the mind of the reader can be based on the cluster model which suggests that the readers define a number of features by which they identify the genre. The prototype model of the genre is no less relevant: belonging of a particular work to a particular genre is determined in the mind of the reader by its similarity with the best genre model – a standard (or a prototype). The number of such standards is not very large. As a rule, this status is acquired by works that are included in the school literary canon. In the reader’s mind, genre classes are not formations with clear boundaries; rather, they are more likely to be built on the principle of “family resemblance”. The cognitive model of a genre in the mind of the reader has certain features of a field. Conducting cognitive genre research, i.e. identifying ways of representing the genre in the mind of a reader requires the development of a special questionnaire that takes into account the level of the ordinary (naive) reader who is not a philologist.

Conceptualisation of Nation Brands to Attract Foreign Direct Investment: An Integrated Model

A nation brand is defined as a brand of a country. Nations are not only political and sovereign entities, but also business entities that conduct foreign trade, promote talent and innovation, create knowledge, levy taxes and enact laws. As a whole, nations accumulate wealth, power and status and leverage their brand identities to further their strategic interests. This article looks at the theories of nation branding and its implications on attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). FDI inflow has been studied by various researchers. The impact of nation branding on FDI has not been studied from an integrated perspective. This article analyses all the papers published in the field from 1969 when the genre of research was first mentioned in management literature and the factors presented by various researchers and place brand practitioners up to 2022 and combines them all into one integrated statistically testable model. The article analyses the factors from three perspectives—that of the governments and investment promotion agencies, external brand analysts and ranking consultancies as well as that of the investors.

The purpose of the research article is to determine the level and intensity of development of modern domestic journalistic research. Transitioning to a Bichronous (Synchronous+Asynchronous) ODL Set-Up in High School Education: An Autoethnographic Study

Within the framework of Autoethnography, this study answered the research question: How did a high school teacher transition from a full face-to-face instruction to a Bichronous (Synchronous +Asynchronous) Online Distance Learning (ODL) Set-up in High School Education during the Covid 19 Pandemic? The autoethnographic genre of qualitative research enabled the researcher to craft a narrative and arrive with a deeper analysis of this narrative. After analyzing different data set and examination of artifacts such as email, curricular documents, discussion posts, video recordings, a workplace calendar, a personal journal, professional development logs, and personal experience; the study revealed, as reflected by several periods in the findings, that the author’s transition includes: (a) structuring the course (designing pedagogy in ODL) – designing the Leanring Contiuity Plan, In-service Training for Teachers, and Designing the Theresian Learner’s Study Guide (TLSG); (b) effectively using the ODL technologies to implement a Bichronous ODL set-up – structuring the course in the Learning Management System for the asynchronous mode and conducting real-time teaching using video conferencing tools for the synchronous mode; (c) establishing teacher presence in the asynchronous and synchronous modes; and (d) providing student-support mechanism – cognitive, affective, and systemic. The importance of designing a school’s ODL set-up for future remote teaching and learning scenario should be looked into and teachers should receive proper training on ODL Pedagogy and Technologies.

Rhythm Research in Interactive System Design: A Literature Review

Rhythm can create a sense of structure or order, making it easier for users to understand and navigate interactive systems, thereby making user engagement more enjoyable and motivating. Recently, designers are increasingly interested in integrating rhythm into the design of interactive systems. However, the existing literature on this topic is fragmented, making it difficult for designers to find comprehensive guidance. This paper presents the first literature review of rhythm research for designing an interactive system based on the PRISMA method. Through an analysis of 59 papers based on the critical review method (e.g., research through design), we identify six research genres and provide a map to help future researchers locate their research position. Because there is currently no clear classification framework to guide designers in integrating rhythm into interactive systems, we propose a classification framework that includes six design qualities: three human rhythm-driven qualities and three computer rhythm-driven qualities based on the literature review. This classification framework provides a foundation for designers to regulate rhythm in interactive systems. In addition, we discuss emerging issues related to rhythm genres and rhythm classification framework and design qualities. We reflect on the effectiveness of our proposed framework by revisiting previous works on designing interactive systems, and provide potential directions for future research in this area. Overall, this paper aims to provide comprehensive guidance for designers who wish to integrate rhythm into the design of interactive systems, and to advance the understanding of the role of rhythm in interactive system design.

At the cultural interface: A systematic review of study characteristics and cultural integrity from twenty years of randomised controlled trials with Indigenous participants.

To identify and describe characteristics of Randomised Control Trial (RCT) design, implementation, and interpretation with a view tostrengtheningen the cultural integrity and scientific quality of this genre of research when used with, for and by Indigenous peoples. RCTs are widely regarded as the 'gold standard' method for evaluating the efficacy of an intervention. However, issues of cultural acceptability and higher attrition rates among RCT participants from diverse populations, including Indigenous participants, have been reported. A better understanding of cultural acceptability and attrition rates of RCTs has the potential to impact the translation of findings into effective policies, programs and practice. A search of four electronic databases identified papers describing RCTs enrolling exclusively Australian Indigenous peoples over a 20-year period. The RCTs were assessed using: The Effective Public Health Practice Project's Quality Assessment Tool (EPHPP) and the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Quality Appraisal Tool (QAT). The scores for each paper and the average scores of all papers were visualised using a Microsoft Excel™ Filled Radar Plot. Seventeen trials met the inclusion criteria. There was wide variation in the quality of the included trials as assessed by the EPHPP and almost universally poor results when assessed for cultural appropriateness and integrity by the QAT. The value of the RCT research method, when applied to ultimately improve Australian Indigenous peoples' health, is diminished if issues of cultural integrity are not intrinsic to study design and execution. Our review found that it is feasible to have an RCT with both strong cultural integrity and high scientific quality. Attention to cultural integrity and community engagement, along with methodological rigour, may strengthen community ownership and contribute to more successful study adherence and potentially more effective translation of study findings into policy and practice.

PERHITUNGAN WETON PERKAWINAN MENURUT ADAT JAWA

Marriage is a religious ritual in Islam that was also followed by the Prophet Muhammad. Almost all ethnicities have different customs. One of the Javanese customs in conducting a wedding is by calculating the weton or day of birth. The weton determines a prediction about the future fate of the family. The purpose of this research is to find out how the connection between the weton tradition that takes place before the wedding with the perspective of one of the books of fiqh rules, namely the book of al-Faraid al-Bahiyyah. This research method is a library research genre using a content analysis approach. The findings of this study include: a) In the implementation of the weton tradition, the Javanese community is divided into two groups, firstly kejawen, a group that makes weton as a benchmark for marriage and believes in it. The second is potehan, a group that is afraid of polytheism. They do not use weton completely. b) Weton according to the book al-Faraid al-Bahiyyah has fulfilled the requirements of custom and can be used as a basis for law, the conditions are first, custom can be used as a basis for law if it is muththarid (applies evenly) in an area. Secondly, if there is a conflict between `urf jali and shara' then the former takes precedence, if it is not related to the law of shara'. Third, `Urf khash if it is not limited to a particular area, then it can be used as a legal basis.Fourth, the standard of `urf that can be used as a landmark

SCIENTIFIC AND THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS OF TEACHING M. AUEZOV'S STORIES

The article deals with the nature of the study of the stories of M.O Auezov, a thinker, an artist, not only in Kazakh literature, but in all human literature. It is said that the author's stories are known to the world community and are a valuable resource of our literature. Noting the relevance of the study of M. Auezov's stories in the Kazakh literary criticism, the author mentions several scholars who study the stories of writers. On the basis of scientific work, M. Auezov's stories are considered as a scientific object. The article also analyzes the works, conclusions and views of scholars who have studied the stories of the writer. The author refers to the period of research of the writer's stories, refers to the conclusions of scholars who classified the ethnographic features of M. Auezov's stories in terms of: psychology, image system, dialogic nature in the text, mythology in the writer's stories, landscape, genre research and the writer's first prose works. Considering the findings of these scientists, the analysis of the writer's stories proves the relevance and importance. In the process of comparing and classifying concepts, the author clearly expresses his opinion. The study of M. Auezov is one of the most important aspects of Kazakh literary criticism. After all, by studying the writer, we can draw conclusions about the artistic pursuits of Kazakh literature of that period. And through the works of scientists who have studied the heritage of the writer, we can recognize the personality and creativity of the writer. Therefore, it is clear that the two processes that develop from each other have a great impact on the study of Kazakh literature. Therefore, the author concludes that in modern Kazakh literary criticism the importance of work to understand the artistic presumption of the writer's work has increased and the need for research.

STYLISTIC FEATURES OF ENGLISH-LANGUAGE LINGUISTIC ABSTRACTS: A CORPUS-BASED STUDY

While the genre of research abstract has recently gained much attention in the field of English for Academic Purposes, there is an acute need for more profound research into its ever-changing stylistic conventions, particularly in the area of linguistics. The purpose of the present study was to determine the stylistic features of modern Englishlanguage abstracts based on a corpus of 300 abstracts from leading journals in the field of linguistics, published in 2020 to 2023. The methodology integrated corpus methods (frequency and collocation analysis) with qualitative methods (contextual and pragmatic analysis) to determine the rhetorical and communicative strategies correlating with the identified linguistic devices. Relying on previous relevant studies, we primarily focused on the grammar categories of tense and voice. It was found out that present tense is predominant in the sample, though quite often authors choose to alternate tenses within one abstract, restricting past tense to the description of methodology and results. In these sections, it is also more common for authors to shift to passive voice, while the introduction, conclusion and implications are written mostly in active voice. Abstracts written entirely in passive voice are extremely rare in our corpus, which has important pedagogical implications. Also, we revealed that linguists are prone to non-personal use of active voice via self-referential nominals such as the study investigates, the results show. Thus, they diminish their own agency as researchers and reinforce the impression of scientific objectivity. Another stylistic aspect that we addressed is referring to previous research in the field. While it is mostly associated with the opening rhetorical move (introduction/background), we demonstrate that authors frequently refer to other studies in the field in later stages of an abstract to situate their research within the global landscape. It is becoming common for linguists to indicate in the abstract the studies they have drawn upon and the studies that their outcomes agree or disagree with. This finding should also be taken into consideration in English academic writing courses for researchers in linguistics.

’F---- Shark Tank:’ Rethinking the Centrality of the Business Pitch in Microenterprise Entrepreneurship

ABSTRACT This project investigates how the goals of microenterprise entrepreneurs affect their use of communication genres. Although slide-based business pitches are key for traditional entrepreneurs, microenterprise entrepreneurs have little interest in investment. Therefore, acquiring customers through short elevator pitches takes this central position. This article also explores the social justice dimensions of microenterprise acceleration, finding that such organizations can provide important services in combating inequality. This project uses writing, activity, and genre research as a theoretical framework, and the research site is a microenterprise accelerator in Tacoma, Washington called Spaceworks Tacoma, which supports both lower-income and Black owners of small businesses.

Genre-related episodes: A tutorial for L2 writing teachers

Within second language writing studies, genre scholars continue to advance theoretical frameworks, research methods, and recommendations for the teaching of both genre-specific knowledge and broader awareness of genres. One recent advancement in genre research methods is that of genre-related episodes (GREs), an analytical tool which can be used to observe students’ emerging genre knowledge through the analysis of students’ dialogue and negotiation around a target genre. The uses of GREs for research purposes have been discussed in a few recent publications, but GREs can also be employed to inform genre-based writing instruction. This methods tutorial aims to provide guidance, a discussion of important considerations, and an example of how GREs can be applied to teaching. This tutorial will be useful for second language writing practitioners, in particular, and may be of interest to genre researchers interested in the teaching-research nexus; it may also be of interest to genre scholars, writing researchers, and more generally to applied linguistics researchers interested in classroom-based research and action research.

What we know about information seeking and use and how research makes a difference in our knowing1

This paper summarizes what is known about everyday health information seeking and use, as supported by empirical research largely conducted during the 1980s and 1990’s. It draws implications for research and system design applicable to the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) MedlinePlus web portal and data base of consumer health information. Its focus is on the two academic disciplines that bear most directly on information seeking and use, each with different perspectives. Communication (COMM) whose orientation is the study of messaging and the effective transmission of information, and Library and Information Science (LIS) whose focus is on meeting user information needs. Although there is very little overlapping literature, Dr. Dervin’s career was spent working across these two research genres. She is known most prominently for her Sense-Making Methodology. Dr. Dervin supports the view that there are more commonalities than differences between the two disciplines, and that research focusing on the commonalities provides a better opportunity for accounting for more variance in human information seeking than the highly compartmentalized approaches that dominate the study of information seeking. Dr. Dervin’s first-person review of these literatures was commissioned by NLM in 2001. It remains relevant today both for its critical insights, and as an historical resource. It is published posthumously in 2023 in tribute to Dr. Dervin on her recent passing.

Writing strategies in autoethnography and memoir: Methodological legacies from three activist-scholars

Autoethnography and autobiography are powerful means to link personal experience with cultural and political contexts. In this Note, I argue for blurring the boundaries between the two research genres. I discuss memoirs from the United States, England and Egypt—by Ida B. Wells, Sylvia Pankhurst, and Nawal El Saadawi—noting their approaches to truth and their narrative strategies. The authors were social activists and public intellectuals, whose work was accessible to a wide audience. Drawing on their examples, I invite contemporary qualitative researchers to expand our perspectives on autoethnography, and to acknowledge writing from a broader pool of genres, times, and places. We can increase our field’s ability to inspire change by reclaiming its history and scope.

Demystifying academic promotional genre:A rhetorical move-step analysis of Teaching Philosophy Statements (TPSs)

As a high-stakes academic promotional genre, teaching philosophy statements (TPSs) are important in academic professionals’ career success and professional development in U.S. higher education. However, this genre remains relatively overlooked in current EAP genre research. The study addresses this gap by investigating the rhetorical moves and steps, including their frequency and sequence, in 100 TPSs written by U.S. university faculty members who wrote their TPSs to apply for and eventually won prestigious university teaching awards. It also explores gatekeeper and novice writer’s perceptions of the genre analysis results. Findings show that the TPSs are structured by two very common moves: Construct teacher profile and Demonstrate teacher competence in the classroom, as well as three less common moves and multiple very common, common, and less common steps. The TPSs are also cyclically sequenced by the two very common moves. The gatekeeper and novice writer positively recognized the usefulness of the genre analysis results in terms of representing the TPS genre, further highlighted the genre’s intertextual operation, and eventually interpreted the results’ potential in informing EAP writing pedagogy. Future research and pedagogical directions are discussed.
