Features of educational and enlightening online video content in Russia

INTRODUCTION. The active development of the audiovisual sector of new media and its integration into the system of educational and enlightening practices makes the issue of specifying the key features of modern online educational and enlightening video content relevant. The purpose of the study is to attempt to give a systemic description of this type of content.MATERIALS AND METHODS. The object of the study is educational and enlightening video content presented in the Russian-language sector of the Internet. The chronological framework of the study is 2022–2023. The key research methods are comparative-typological, historical-functional, and textual.RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. Despite significant overlaps in the area of implemented functions, educational and enlightening content are not identical. The former is usually offered by educational organizations in a structured form with a clearly defined goal of forming specific knowledge, skills, and abilities. The latter is content aimed at satisfying the user’s interest or curiosity in a particular area, offering information of interest to the user for the purpose of self-development and not aimed at forming specific knowledge, skills, and abilities. These types of content have significant differences in such typological features as goal setting, audience focus, genre and thematic content.CONCLUSION. The study revealed significant differences between educational and enlightening online video content, which generally consist of the fact that educational content largely copies educational genres and formats, and also gravitates toward classical video formats, while enlightening content is more focused on approaches developed in video blogging.

Using genres for laboratory work, report writing and design projects: comparing second and fourth year undergraduate engineers

Purpose This study aims to investigate patterns of information use among undergraduate engineers as they progress through their academic programs. The primary objective was to discern how second and fourth-year students differ in their use of different types of information while performing specific tasks, namely, conducting labs, composing reports and undertaking projects. Design/methodology/approach The research used an online questionnaire to collect data, focusing on the comparative analysis of second and fourth-year engineering students’ information use. The analytical framework comprised a chi-square test, residual analysis and exploratory data analysis, for evaluating statistical significance and identifying trends over time. Findings The results demonstrated a statistically significant difference in information use between second and fourth year undergraduates. Notably, fourth year students exhibited a preference for disciplinary genres, such as journal articles, patents and technical reports. This coincided with a decline in fourth year students’ use of educational genres, including textbooks and instructors’ handouts, notes and slides. These shifts in information use were observed consistently across all three tasks. Originality/value The uniqueness of the study resides in its innovative approach to exploring information use by investigating the relationship between genres and tasks over the course of students’ academic programs. The research introduces a novel approach for visualizing changes in information use. By describing the evolving preferences of undergraduate students from novice to emerging professional, this study contributes valuable insights into the nuanced ways in which information is used throughout the levels of engineering education.

THE ROLE OF UZBEK FOLKLORE GENRES IN SPIRITUAL AND MORAL EDUCATION

The article provides information about the genres of Uzbek folk art. The method of developing the spiritual and moral education of future teachers through folklore is highlighted. The role of folklore genres in education is given.

Machine Learning System Implementation of Education Podcast Recommendations on Spotify Applications Using Content-Based Filtering and TF-IDF

Spotify, this popular music and podcast streaming service, has a fundamental problem in assisting clients in finding podcasts that fit their interests. Thus, the goal of this project is to develop a podcast recommendation system that would enhance users' capacity to identify pertinent content, particularly in the educational genre. By using content-based filtration techniques, this system analyzes the user's listening preferences and interests before recommending educational podcasts. The podcast data source is Spotify, and the suggestions are produced using the TF-IDF and Cosine Similarity techniques. The recommendations provide a list of educational podcasts catered to the user's specific interests. The Confusion Matrix Classification Report was tested to assess system performance during the review phase. Precision values show how accurate the system was at recommending educational podcasts; on average, they range from 0.52 to 0.74. Additionally, the recall value showed a mean of 0.51 and a mean of 0.79, indicating that the algorithm successfully located the relevant content. To put it briefly, this custom recommendation engine enhances the listening experience for Spotify customers by suggesting educational podcasts based on their preferences. The system's ability to match users with material that aligns with their interests was demonstrated by the metrics used to assess its performance. With more user interactions with the system, it was anticipated by Cosine Similarity, a statistic used to determine the quality of recommendations, will continue to improve. To improve user experience and personalize the podcast listening experience on Spotify, this research addresses the challenge of locating suitable podcasts.

Rhetorical Moves and Metadiscourse in English Abstracts of Research Articles and Masters’ Theses

Rhetorical communication and metadiscoursal devices are important in understanding the rhetorical negotiations involved in academic texts. Research studies comparing these two phases of the analysis of English abstracts of research articles and Masters’ theses written by non-native English writers are limited. Three corpora of abstracts in the field of business were analyzed for their rhetorical moves by using Hyland’s (2000) model and metadiscourse markers in the moves by using Hyland’s (2005) metadiscourse taxonomy. Some striking similarities and differences were found among the three sets of data. Purpose, Method, and Product moves were found with different degrees of occurrences, while the Introduction and Conclusion moves occurred infrequently. The employment of interactive devices outnumbered the interactional devices. Transitions and self-mention were the most frequent markers in the international corpus, while frame markers and attitude markers were found extensively in the two Thai-based corpora. The findings of the analysis of the two related genres shed light on the genre variations which were derived from genre-specific features. This can be ascribed to the dynamic nature of research articles as a professional genre and theses as an educational genre. Additionally, the study provides inexperienced non-native writers with a deeper understanding of the rhetorical structure and metadiscourse devices realized in research articles and theses.

Revitalizing Music Education for New Generations: Navigating the Path of Popular Music Pedagogy Through Comparative Analysis of Dalcroze, Orff, and Kodály Methodologies and Their Implications

The provision of music education is deeply ingrained in the cultural legacies of many countries across the globe, including China. It is essential to improve the music education system in order to better serve the demands of modern students, since the number of beginning musicians continues to rise. This study's main goal is to investigate reforms in music education through a comparative analysis of three essential music education systems, with a particular emphasis on popular music pedagogy. The study explores the field of music education in China, focusing on the Kodály, Orff, and Dalcroze approaches. There are similarities between these approaches, including the focus on collaborative learning, the development of musical literacy, and the encouragement of active learning. They are especially relevant in the context of Chinese education since they are consistent with cultural norms. However, there are differences in how they have developed historically and how they have been incorporated into the Chinese educational system. This evaluation stands out for highlighting the difficulties that music education institutions encounter, particularly with regard to the availability of resources and teacher preparation. In addition, a key component of the reform goal is the inclusion of contemporary musical genres in popular music education. This study explains the similarities, differences, and implications for China's music education environment by carefully examining these approaches and doing a methodical analysis of the body of available research.

Comparing effectiveness of educational video games of different genres in computer science education

Educational video games have been proven effective for many purposes. However, little research has been conducted in order to analyze the effect of the game genre on the pedagogical effectiveness of the game-based learning experiences conducted using them. This article aims to fill this gap by analyzing and comparing, for the first time, the instructional and motivational effectiveness of two educational video games of different genres: third-person shooter and endless runner. The research questions addressed in this article are as follows: Is Game-Based Learning using teacher-authored video games effective in terms of knowledge acquisition and motivation to learn about database administration in computer science education? Does the effectiveness of Game-Based Learning in computer science education depends on playing a third-person shooter or an endless runner game? An experimental design (randomized controlled trial with pre-post test design) supported by instruments to gather the knowledge acquisition and opinion of the students allowed for a rigorous analysis of the conducted experience. A total of 45 computer science students organized in two groups learned about database administration by playing two educational video games created through a teacher-oriented authoring tool. One group played a third-person shooter game, whereas the other group played an endless runner game. Both games integrated the same learning content and were played by the students the same amount of time. The results show that the analyzed video games are highly and equally effective in terms of knowledge acquisition (learning gains were statistically significant with a medium effect size in both groups) and motivation (average student ratings above 4.5 out of 5 in both groups). Although the students expressed a preference for third-person shooter games, they also expressed that they would have learned the same with other types of games. In conclusion, the evidence reported in this article suggests that educational effectiveness of game-based learning does not depend on video game genre.

A VIEWS OF STUDENTS REGARDING THE USE OF THE E-PORTFOLIO IN THE CREATION OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

This study aimed to describe students' perceptions of using e-portfolio in writing descriptive text and to find out the impact of the use of e-portfolio in writing descriptive text. This research was conducted with a qualitative approach with a case study. The questionnaire, interview, and students’ artifacts were used in collecting the data. The participants in this research were 32 students from first grade (X MIPA) in Mekar Arum senior high school in Bandung, West Java. There were 32 students, consisting of 28 female and four male students, who were involved in this research. The result showed that E-portfolio is easy, efficient, and useful. E-portfolio help students improve their descriptive text writing cognitively. It also had a positive impact on students' writing. It was indicated by their artifacts, in relation to the use of e-portfolios in producing descriptive texts. The students perceived the use of e-portfolio in writing descriptive text as effective in writing descriptive text. It helped them develop in many ways, especially their cognitive writing in descriptive text. This study is limited to the effectiveness of the E-portfolio. It needs further investigation in terms of examining the effectiveness of E-portfolio in teaching descriptive text to more complex variables such as the genre and level of education.

Application Of The Fisher Yates Shufle Algorithm Method In Android-Based Culture Education Games

In this day and age, gaming has become a hobby for everyone. Starting from children, teenagers and adults. The use of educational games as learning media for the introduction of regional culture is considered suitable, because it can take advantage of developing technology. The way for children to get to know about the diversity of Indonesian culture is to play games with Indonesian cultural backgrounds. Therefore it is necessary to make educational game applications. Educational games about local wisdom were chosen so that children can still play while learning or getting to know food, house, and regional dances in Indonesia while still being able to play. This is considered effective in increasing children's knowledge about Indonesian culture without being forced to study. The game that will be made is not only an educational genre but also a quiz genre where the order of questions and the order of answers that appear will be randomized using the Fisher Yates Algorithm method. This Indonesian Cultural Variety educational game was developed using the Multimedia Development Life Cycle (MDLC) method which consists of six stages, namely concept, design, collecting material, assembly, testing and distribution. This Indonesian Cultural Variety educational game can be played on Android with a minimum of Android 6.0 software or commonly called marshmallow. Based on the results of tests involving 10 respondents, a good response was obtained because it got a percentage of 94.6%.

Old Believers’ singing manuscripts from the collection of the Andrey Rublev Museum at the Avvakum jubilee exhibition at the Museum of Russian Icon

The article is an expanded description of three 18th — 19th c. Old Believers’ origin chanting manuscripts from the collection of the Andrey Rublev Museum demonstrated at the anniversary Avvakum exhibition at the Museum of Russian Icon. These manuscripts — “Holidays”, “Octoechos and Obikhod” and “Trezvony” represent two branches of the Old Believers — accepting priesthood (popovtsy) and priestless (bespopovtsy) which in regards to singing books affects the editions of the text: so called “true-speech” and “separate-speech”. The author speaks about the contents of the books, their repertoire and its musical characteristics, specific singing concepts and terms found in them. The manuscript of the Pomor “Trezvons” is examined in more detail including the сomprehensive list of services containinig a large number of Russian saints feasts the features of rites with a short and a complete composition of chants genres.To illustrate the unique artistic design of the manuscripts the article publishes photographs of various colored handdrawn headpieces, frames, drop caps, flowers on the page margins, a miniature of the seated St. John of Damascus and a sample of hook notation.From the Appendix of Guslitsy “Obikhod” of 1809 is given a musical example of the chant “The monk is coming from the monastery” which represents a translation of the hook znamenny notation into the modern one. It is designated in the manuscript as “Examples of odes” and is an example of a non-liturgical educational genre, where each new line is sung to the motive of one of the eight odes of the znamenny chant. To make it easier to memorize the melodies a subtext was invented, telling a story reminiscent to a folk song or a spiritual verse. So, in the Old Believers singing books the ancient Russian tradition of monophonic znamenny singing in which an archaic melody, considered sacred and not made by hands is combined with folk elements of paralyturgical genres and decorative design of manuscripts and persists.

Not a few parents who allow their children to use a smartphone with various reasons such as so that children do not interfere with work, so that children do not neglect, and various other reasons. However, sometimes smartphones are misused only for playing games by children, so the time that should be used for learning is instead used for playing games only. So that the game does not only waste the child's time in vain, then built a game application for children based on the genre of fighter and education in the game of hero against monsters accompanied by mathematics learning. The features provided in the application are 4 types of questions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as well as 6 levels of problem difficulty level. By this basic level math game it can be an alternative in learning while playing games through smartphones. This game is able to be a fun learning media in learning mathematics for game users.

Tools of Creating Emotional Climate in Knowledge-Based Television Space

The relevance of the article is due to the need to comprehend and identify the specifics of the formation of emotional mood in modern knowledge-based TV texts of an advisory nature. It will make possible to better understand the specifics of educational genres. The purpose of the work is to establish and describe the repertoire of tools for the formation of emotional mood and linguistic means of their representation in a knowledge-based television discourse. The research material was TV broadcasts of thematic groups as follows: leisure, health and healthy lifestyle, home improvement, food, driving, beauty and fashion. The corpus of the texts under analysis is represented by advisory-instructive and informative-demonstrative genres. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that in the texts that broadcast everyday, practical knowledge, tools are recorded and described that simulate the emotional mood of the viewer in the process of learning process. The research reveals that the textual representatives of the advisory and instructive genres of relaxation and hedonistic themes construct an impressions and pleasure zone. At the same time, the accents of texts describing ways of behavior in danger-associated situations (for example, health topics) are focused on regulating the mood and emotions of the media audience. Such texts are constructed based on an emotionally sensual modality that swings the viewer's emotions from negative to positive. The formation of such a diverse emotional tone is aimed at creating a positive attitude towards specific health improvement actions, as well as encouraging adherence to the rules of a healthy lifestyle in society. The article describes the triggers that produce positive and negative emotions, as well as tools for their activation in the text (the image of the author and the image of the addressee; genres of everyday communication, designed in a friendly-informal register; linguistic means). The research reveals functions of impression producing (attracting attention, positive emotional modeling, formation of a positive attitude to the object of expression and persuasive influence) and regulation of emotional mood (socially stabilizing, regulation of behavior, persuasive influence).

A Survey of Language Shaming Experiences in Interpreter Education

Problems of practice (Henriksen & Richardson, 2017) are the impetus for change across many disciplines and result in a myriad of solutions toward best practices. Teaching American Sign Language/English interpreting is no different than other genres in higher education in seeking continuous improvement. Signed language interpreters in teaming situations may engage in self- and peer critique in the process of creating an interpretation (Russell, 2011). As a result, interpreters are cognizant of corrections they may receive from their peers, whether new to the field or long-term practitioners. The action of being monitored by peers and the related behavior are not always exhibited in ways that are informed by best practices. Previous research has documented unhealthy feedback practices as a type of horizontal violence (Ott, 2012). The practice of negative behavior results in disrupted learning spaces and could be compounded by a lack of awareness by the participants. The current study examined language shaming in interpreter education from the perspective of the student who experienced the shaming behavior and who also may have engaged in shaming activities. The results have implications for both language and interpreting teachers in devising constructive feedback techniques that better support the learner.

Genre Analysis of Abstracts of Empirical Research Articles Published in TESOL Quarterly

Research article (RA) abstracts constitute an important genre in higher education. Previous research on the RA abstract has often combined abstracts from journals from the same discipline, with the view of revealing possible intra/inter-disciplinary, cross-linguistic, cross-cultural, etc. variations. The present study analysed empirical RA abstracts from TESOL Quarterly, a well-recognised journal in Applied Linguistics, with the view of revealing their rhetorical structure and linguistic peculiarities. Hundred (100) empirical RA abstracts collected from the website of the journal constituted the data for the study. The data were analysed, with attention to the move structure (kinds, frequency, and sequencing of moves) as well as the linguistics realisation of moves. The study revealed that TESOL Quarterly empirical RA abstracts feature a five-move structure, with the Purpose and Product moves being Obligatory and the Introduction, Method, and Conclusion moves being core moves. It was also revealed that the abstracts were characterised by nine move sequences, with the five-move sequence (M1>M2>M3>M4>M5) dominating. The study also revealed that each move was characterised by unique configurations of linguistic features, particularly tense, voice, and grammatical subject roles. This study contributes to scholarship on RA abstracts. It also has implications for pedagogy and practice, and serves as a trigger for further studies.

Theme choice in oral case presentations: Differences between medical novices and experts

The clinical case presentation is an important mode of professional communication as well as an academic genre in medical education. Examining both students' and experienced doctors' linguistic practices can reveal how students differ in their underlying knowledge, interpretation and execution of the case presentation that mark their novice status. In this paper, we describe differences in the use of theme in initiating sentences in case presentations produced by doctors and medical students. Theme analysis, an analysis of the linguistic elements that are used to begin a clause, was used. The data comprised 50 audio-recorded oral case presentations elicited from 20 doctors and 30 students in two medical schools. Choice of theme in doctors' and students' presentations was compared. The findings show that doctors and students differ significantly in their use of specific theme types indicating their different understanding and use of the oral case presentation as well as their social position in the professional field. Indexing students' novice status are differences in the use of conjunctive adjuncts, interpersonal, existential and pronoun themes, and marked themes as overt signalling of the presentation structure. These findings contribute to provide some insight on students’ learning trajectory and can inform appropriate educational interventions.

This paper examines the humanitarian reality genre in Norway as a form of entertainment, education, and information. Norwegian 'doing-good' entertainment content is explored as representative of particular cultural and historical context, especially due to the popularity, frequency of broadcasting and the specific societal status assigned to this format. An overview and the consideration of the fundamental themes and elements of the genre elaborates on the concepts of 'Scanguilt' and 'regime of goodness', relevant for the interpretation of these programs. Differences in comparison to non-fiction journalistic storytelling are also pertinent. Drawing from Tvedt's thesis on the strategic communication regime, the methods, actors and effects of this genre of entertainment, education and information are seen in a wider spectrum, not limited to the socio-political outcomes apparent only in the Norwegian context. This point of departure enables the move from the consequences to the Norwegian identity and society in the direction of the effects of the media reproduction of coloniality.

An Analysis of Gender Representation in Territory-Wide System Assessment English Language Papers for Primary School Students in Hong Kong

Gender stereotyping has long been an issue for gender and language research from as early as the 1970s, and analyses on gender representation in English language textbooks have been frequently conducted. However, gender representation in assessment papers, another commonly occurring genre in education, remains unexplored in Hong Kong research. Therefore, this paper was aimed to explore how males and females are represented in Territory-wide System Assessment (TSA), a territory-level assessment administered in Hong Kong, to find out if gender stereotyping is still an issue. The data of the current study include the recent 10 years of TSA Primary 3 English Language Reading & Writing papers. A total of 33 sets of TSA Primary 3 English Language Reading & Writing papers was analysed by using content and linguistic analyses for their written texts and visual analysis for visual elements. The key findings include: males and females are represented similarly in the written texts and in the visuals, and females are portrayed as involving in occupational roles more frequently than males in both the written texts and visuals. However, it is always females who were drawn to be focused on family matters, and the marital status of a female is still distinguished by the use of either Miss or Mrs. Suggestions for test paper designers and examination authorities are given and implications for future research studies are drawn at the end of this paper.

The discourse of thesis assessment reports in a disciplinary community at the University of Cape Coast: An exploratory study

Thesis assessment reports constitute an important review genre in postgraduate education, though they largely remain occluded. This paper investigates the discourse of thesis assessment reports, with the view to gaining insights into their form and content in a Ghanaian university. Thirty-four (34) written assessment reports of 19 Master’s theses from the Department of English in the University of Cape Coast constituted the data set. A qualitative content analysis, supplemented with descriptive statistics, was adopted. Three key findings emerged from the analysis of the data. First, there were varying structural patterns adopted by assessors, thereby evincing individual preferences. Second, the least and most frequent comments in the assessment reports were on the methodology on one hand and literature review and analysis/discussion on the other hand. Third, theses assessors largely adhered to institutional guidelines in terms of the evaluative criteria. These findings have implications for the scholarship on thesis assessment reports in postgraduate education, postgraduate pedagogy, and further research in higher education in Ghana and elsewhere.

Study of Some Key Elements of Design and Selection of an Educational Video Game Conducive to the Moroccan Secondary School Learners: The Motivational Profile and Pedagogical Coherence

Educational video games are being used increasingly in teaching physics. They offer learners a fun and convivial learning environment. However, the use of an educational video game genre that is ill-suited to a type of learning situation or inconsistent with the learners' motivational profile influences the effectiveness of its use in the classroom. In this context, this article deals, on the one hand, with the coherence between the genre of video games and the type of learning situation found in the context of the competency-based approach. On the other hand, it presents the results of a survey to describe the Moroccan learners' motivational profile in video games. The results show that the games should be adapted to each type of learning situation, designed and chosen to meet the learners' interest and avoided when learners are not interested in the genre of the games. It is also pointed out that most of learners prefer to use video games at the level of the explanation of the lessons and the exercises. In light of this research, we have made a number of recommendations for choosing and designing an educational video game.
