A Revisited Equilibrium Solution of the Fishbone and Moncrief Torus for Extended General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations

Accretion physics has become more important recently due to the detection of the first horizon-scale images of the supermassive black holes of M 87* and Sgr A* by the Event Horizon Telescope. General relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of magnetized accretion flows onto a Kerr black hole have been used to interpret them. However, further testing the theory of gravity by using horizon-scale images requires performing consistent GRMHD simulations in non-Kerr spacetime. In this paper, we revisited the hydrodynamical equilibrium solution of the Fishbone and Moncrief (FM) torus that can be used to study any stationary, axisymmetric, vacuum, or nonvacuum spacetime. Further, we check the stability of the FM torus in non-Kerr spacetime by general relativistic hydrodynamic simulations. We find that FM torus in non-Kerr spacetime is indeed stable under long-term evolution. We conclude that the generalized FM torus solution would be very useful for creating new GRMHD libraries in extended Kerr black holes.

The three-dimensional structure of black hole accretion flows within the plunging region

Abstract We analyse, using new analytical models and numerical general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations, the three-dimensional properties of accretion flows inside the plunging region of black hole spacetimes (i.e., at radii smaller than the innermost stable circular orbit). These simulations are of thick discs, with aspect ratios of order unity h/r ∼ 1, and with a magnetic field geometry given by the standard low-magnetization ‘SANE’ configuration. This work represents the first step in a wider analysis of this highly relativistic region. We show that analytical expressions derived in the ‘thin disc’ limit describe the numerical results remarkably well, despite the large aspect ratio of the flow. We further demonstrate that accretion within this region is typically mediated via spiral arms, and that the geometric properties of these spiral structures can be understood with a simple analytical model. These results highlight how accretion within the plunging region is fundamentally two dimensional in character, which may have a number of observational implications. We derive a modified theoretical description of the pressure within the plunging region which accounts for turbulent heating and may be of use to black hole image modelling.

Magnetorotational dynamo can generate large-scale vertical magnetic fields in 3D GRMHD simulations of accreting black holes

ABSTRACT Jetted astrophysical phenomena with black hole engines, including binary mergers, jetted tidal disruption events, and X-ray binaries, require a large-scale vertical magnetic field for efficient jet formation. However, a dynamo mechanism that could generate these crucial large-scale magnetic fields has not been identified and characterized. We have employed three-dimensional global general relativistic magnetohydrodynamical simulations of accretion discs to quantify, for the first time, a dynamo mechanism that generates large-scale magnetic fields. This dynamo mechanism primarily arises from the non-linear evolution of the magnetorotational instability (MRI). In this mechanism, large non-axisymmetric MRI-amplified shearing wave modes, mediated by the axisymmetric azimuthal magnetic field, generate and sustain the large-scale vertical magnetic field through their non-linear interactions. We identify the advection of magnetic loops as a crucial feature, transporting the large-scale vertical magnetic field from the outer regions to the inner regions of the accretion disc. This leads to a larger characteristic size of the, now advected, magnetic field when compared to the local disc height. We characterize the complete dynamo mechanism with two time-scales: one for the local magnetic field generation, $t_{\rm gen}$, and one for the large-scale scale advection, $t_{\rm adv}$. Whereas the dynamo we describe is non-linear, we explore the potential of linear mean field models to replicate its core features. Our findings indicate that traditional $\alpha$-dynamo models, often computed in stratified shearing box simulations, are inadequate and that the effective large-scale dynamics is better described by the shear current effects or stochastic $\alpha$-dynamos.

Realistic models of general-relativistic differentially rotating stars

ABSTRACT General-relativistic equilibria of differentially rotating stars are expected in a number of astrophysical scenarios, from core-collapse supernovae to the remnant of binary neutron-star mergers. The latter, in particular, have been the subject of extensive studies where they were modelled with a variety of laws of differential rotation with varying degree of realism. Starting from accurate and fully general-relativistic simulations of binary neutron-star mergers with various equations of state and mass ratios, we establish the time when the merger remnant has reached a quasi-stationary equilibrium and extract in this way realistic profiles of differential rotation. This allows us to explore how well traditional laws reproduce such differential-rotation properties and to derive new laws of differential rotation that better match the numerical data in the low-density Keplerian regions of the remnant. In this way, we have obtained a novel and somewhat surprising result: the dynamical stability line to quasi-radial oscillations computed from the turning-point criterion can have a slope that is not necessarily negative with respect to the central rest-mass density, as previously found with traditional differential-rotation laws. Indeed, for stellar models reproducing well the properties of the merger remnants, the slope is actually positive, thus reflecting remnants with angular momentum at large distances from the rotation axis, and hence with cores having higher central rest-mass densities and slower rotation rates.

Current Sheet Alignment in Oblique Black Hole Magnetospheres: A Black Hole Pulsar?

We study the magnetospheric evolution of a nonaccreting spinning black hole (BH) with an initially inclined split monopole magnetic field by means of 3D general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations. This serves as a model for a neutron star (NS) collapse or a BH–NS merger remnant after the inherited magnetosphere has settled into a split monopole field creating a striped wind. We show that the initially inclined split monopolar current sheet aligns over time with the BH equatorial plane. The inclination angle evolves exponentially toward alignment, with an alignment timescale that is inversely proportional to the square of the BH angular velocity, where higher spin results in faster alignment. Furthermore, magnetic reconnection in the current sheet leads to exponential decay of event-horizon-penetrating magnetic flux with nearly the same timescale for all considered BH spins. In addition, we present relations for the BH mass and spin in terms of the period and alignment timescale of the striped wind. The explored scenario of a rotating, aligning, and reconnecting current sheet can potentially lead to multimessenger electromagnetic counterparts to a gravitational-wave event due to the acceleration of particles powering high-energy radiation, plasmoid mergers resulting in coherent radio signals, and pulsating emission due to the initial misalignment of the BH magnetosphere.

Flares in the Galactic centre – II. Polarization signatures of flares at mm-wavelengths

ABSTRACT Recent polarimetric mm-observations of the galactic centre showed sinusoidal loops in the $\mathcal {Q{\small --}U}$ plane with a duration of one hour. The loops coincide with a quasi-simultaneous X-ray flare. A promising mechanism to explain the flaring events are magnetic flux eruptions in magnetically arrested accretion flows (MAD). In our previous work, we studied the accretion flow dynamics during flux eruptions. Here, we extend our previous study by investigating whether polarization loops can be a signature produced by magnetic flux eruptions. We find that loops in the $\mathcal {Q{\small --}U}$ plane are robustly produced in MAD models as they lead to enhanced emissivity of compressed disc material due to orbiting flux bundles. A timing analysis of the synthetic polarized light curves demonstrate a polarized excess variability at time-scales of $\simeq 1~\rm h$. The polarization loops are also clearly imprinted on the cross-correlation of the Stokes parameters which allows us to extract a typical periodicity of $30~\rm min$ to $1~\rm h$ with some evidence for a spin dependence. These results are intrinsic to the MAD state and should thus hold for a wide range of astrophysical objects. A subset of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations without saturated magnetic flux, namely, single temperature standard and normal evolution models, also produces $\mathcal {Q{\small --}U}$ loops. However, in disagreement with the observations, loops in these simulations are quasi-continuous with a low polarization excess.

Black Hole–Disk Interactions in Magnetically Arrested Active Galactic Nuclei: General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations Using a Time-dependent, Binary Metric

Perturber objects interacting with supermassive black hole accretion disks are often invoked to explain observed quasiperiodic behavior in active galactic nuclei (AGN). We present global, 3D general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of black holes on inclined orbits colliding with magnetically arrested thick AGN disks using a binary black hole spacetime with mass ratio 0.1. We do this by implementing an approximate time-dependent binary black hole metric into the GRMHD Athena++ code. The secondary enhances the unbound mass outflow rate 2–4 times above that provided by the disk in quasiperiodic outbursts, eventually merging into a more continuous outflow at larger distances. We present a simple analytic model that qualitatively agrees well with this result and can be used to extrapolate to unexplored regions of parameter space. We show self-consistently for the first time that spin–orbit coupling between the primary black hole spin and the binary orbital angular momentum causes the accretion disk and jet directions to precess significantly (by 60°–80°) on long timescales (e.g., ∼20 times the binary orbital period). Because this effect may be the only way for thick AGN disks to consistently precess, it could provide strong evidence of a secondary black hole companion if observed in such a system. Besides this new phenomenology, the time-average properties of the disk and accretion rates onto the primary are only marginally altered by the presence of the secondary, consistent with our estimate for a perturbed thick disk. This situation might drastically change in cooled thin disks.

The bright black hole X-ray binary 4U 1543–47 during the 2021 outburst: A thick accretion disk inflated by high luminosity

The black hole X-ray binary source 4U 1543–47 experienced a super-Eddington outburst in 2021, reaching a peak flux of up to ∼1.96 × 10−7 erg cm−2 s−1 (∼8.2 Crab) in the 2−10 keV band. Soon after the outburst began, it rapidly transitioned into the soft state. Our goal is to understand how the accretion disk structure deviates from a standard thin disk when the accretion rate is near Eddington. To do so, we analyzed spectra obtained from quasi-simultaneous observations conducted by the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift). These spectra are well fitted by a model comprising a disk, a weak corona, and a reflection component. We suggest that the reflection component is caused by disk self-irradiation, that is by photons emitted from the inner disk that return to the accretion disk surface as their trajectories are bent by the strong gravity field. In this scenario, the best-fitting parameters imply that the reflected flux represents more than half of the total flux. Using general relativistic ray-tracing simulations, we show that this scenario is viable when the disk becomes geometrically thick, with a funnel-like shape, as the accretion rate is near or above the Eddington limit. In the specific case of 4U 1543–47, an angle ≳45 deg between the disk surface and the equatorial plane can explain the required amount of self-irradiation.

Emergence of Microphysical Bulk Viscosity in Binary Neutron Star Postmerger Dynamics

In nuclear matter in isolated neutron stars, the flavor content (e.g., proton fraction) is subject to weak interactions, establishing flavor (β-)equilibrium. However, there can be deviations from this equilibrium during the merger of two neutron stars. We study the resulting out-of-equilibrium dynamics during the collision by incorporating direct and modified Urca processes (in the neutrino-transparent regime) into general-relativistic hydrodynamics simulations with a simplified neutrino transport scheme. We demonstrate how weak-interaction-driven bulk viscosity in postmerger simulations can emerge and assess the bulk viscous dynamics of the resulting flow. We further place limits on the impact of the postmerger gravitational-wave strain. Our results show that weak-interaction-driven bulk viscosity can potentially lead to a phase shift of the postmerger gravitational-wave spectrum, although the effect is currently on the same level as the numerical errors of our simulation.

“Extended Emission” from Fallback Accretion onto Merger Remnants

Using a set of general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations that include proper neutrino transfer, we assess for the first time the role played by the fallback accretion onto the remnant from a binary neutron star merger over a timescale of hundreds of seconds. In particular, we find that, independently of the equation of state, the properties of the binary, and the fate of the remnant, the fallback material reaches a total mass of ≳10−3 M ⊙, i.e., about 50% of the unbound matter, and that the fallback accretion rate follows a power law in time with slope ∼t −5/3. Interestingly, the timescale of the fallback and the corresponding accretion luminosity are in good agreement with the so-called “extended emission” observed in short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Using a simple electromagnetic emission model based on the self-consistent thermodynamical state of the fallback material heated by r-process nucleosynthesis, we show that this fallback material can shine in gamma and X-rays with luminosities ≳1048 erg s−1 for hundreds of seconds, thus making it a good and natural candidate to explain the extended emission in short GRBs. Additionally, our model for fallback emission reproduces well and rather naturally some of the phenomenological traits of extended emission, such as its softer spectra with respect to the prompt emission and the presence of exponential cutoffs in time. Our results clearly highlight that fallback flows onto merger remnants cannot be neglected, and the corresponding emission represents a very promising and largely unexplored avenue to explain the complex phenomenology of GRBs.

Magnetic Flux Plays an Important Role during a Black Hole X-Ray Binary Outburst in Radiative Two-temperature General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations

Black hole (Bh) X-ray binaries cycle through different spectral states of accretion over the course of months to years. Although persistent changes in the Bh mass accretion rate are generally recognized as the most important component of state transitions, it is becoming increasingly evident that magnetic fields play a similarly important role. In this article, we present the first radiative two-temperature general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations in which an accretion disk transitions from a quiescent state at an accretion rate of Ṁ∼10−10ṀEdd to a hard-intermediate state at an accretion rate of Ṁ∼10−2ṀEdd . This huge parameter space in mass accretion rate is bridged by artificially rescaling the gas density scale of the simulations. We present two jetted BH models with varying degrees of magnetic flux saturation. We demonstrate that in “standard and normal evolution” models, which are unsaturated with magnetic flux, the hot torus collapses into a thin and cold accretion disk when Ṁ≳5×10−3ṀEdd . On the other hand, in “magnetically arrested disk” models, which are fully saturated with vertical magnetic flux, the plasma remains mostly hot with substructures that condense into cold clumps of gas when Ṁ≳1×10−2ṀEdd . This suggests that the spectral signatures observed during state transitions are closely tied to the level of magnetic flux saturation.

Plasmoid identification and statistics in two-dimensional Harris sheet and GRMHD simulations

ABSTRACT Magnetic reconnection is a ubiquitous phenomenon for magnetized plasma and leads to the rapid reconfiguration of magnetic field lines. During reconnection events, plasma is heated and accelerated until the magnetic field lines enclose and capture the plasma within a circular configuration. These so-called plasmoids could therefore observationally manifest themselves as hotspots, which are associated with flaring behaviour in supermassive black hole systems, such as Sagittarius A*. We have developed a novel algorithm for identifying plasmoid structures, which incorporates watershed and custom closed contouring steps. From the identified structures, we determine the plasmoids’ plasma characteristics and energetics in magnetohydrodynamical simulations. The algorithm’s performance is showcased for a high-resolution suite of axisymmetric ideal and resistive magnetohydrodynamical simulations of turbulent accretion discs surrounding a supermassive black hole. For validation purposes, we also evaluate several Harris current sheets that are well-investigated in the literature. We recover the characteristic power-law distribution of plasmoid sizes for both the black hole and Harris sheet simulations. This indicates that while the dynamics are vastly different, with different dominant plasma instabilities, the plasmoid creation characteristics are similar. Plasmoid formation rates for resistive general relativistic magnetohydrodynamical simulations are significantly higher than for their ideal counterpart. Moreover, the largest identified plasmoids are consistent with sizes typically assumed for semi-analytical interpretation of observations. We recover a positive correlation between the plasmoid formation rate and decreases in black-hole-horizon-penetrating magnetic flux, during which the accretion flow is temporarily halted. These results demonstrate the efficacy of the newly developed algorithm which has enabled an extensive quantitative analysis of plasmoid formation in black hole accretion simulations.

Formation of Limb-brightened Radio Jets by Angle-dependent Energy Extraction from Rapidly Rotating Black Holes

Using general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations, it has been suggested that the rotational energy of a rapidly rotating black hole (BH) is preferentially extracted along the magnetic field lines threading the event horizon in the middle and lower latitudes. Applying this angle-dependent Poynting flux to the jet downstream, we demonstrate that the jets exhibit limb-brightened structures at various viewing angles, as observed from Mrk 501, M87, and Cyg A between 5° and 75°, and that the limb brightening is enhanced when the jet is collimated strongly. It is also found that the jet width perpendicular to the propagation direction shrinks at the projected distance of the altitude where the jet collimates from a conical shape (near the BH) to a parabolic one (in the jet). Comparing with Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations, we show that this collimation takes place within the deprojected altitude of 100 Schwarzschild radii from the BH in the case of the M87 jet.

Secular Outflows from Long-Lived Neutron Star Merger Remnants

We study mass ejection from a binary neutron star merger producing a long-lived massive neutron star remnant with general-relativistic neutrino-radiation hydrodynamics simulations. In addition to outflows generated by shocks and tidal torques during and shortly after the merger, we observe the appearance of a wind driven by spiral density waves in the disk. This spiral-wave-driven outflow is predominantly located close to the disk orbital plane and have a broad distribution of electron fractions. At higher latitudes, a high electron-fraction wind is driven by neutrino radiation. The combined nucleosynthesis yields from all the ejecta components is in good agreement with Solar abundance measurements.

A case for a binary black hole system revealed via quasi-periodic outflows.

Binaries containing a compact object orbiting a supermassive black hole are thought to be precursors of gravitational wave events, but their identification has been extremely challenging. Here, we report quasi-periodic variability in x-ray absorption, which we interpret as quasi-periodic outflows (QPOuts) from a previously low-luminosity active galactic nucleus after an outburst, likely caused by a stellar tidal disruption. We rule out several models based on observed properties and instead show using general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations that QPOuts, separated by roughly 8.3 days, can be explained with an intermediate-mass black hole secondary on a mildly eccentric orbit at a mean distance of about 100 gravitational radii from the primary. Our work suggests that QPOuts could be a new way to identify intermediate/extreme-mass ratio binary candidates.

Modeling the inner part of the jet in M87: Confronting jet morphology with theory.

The formation of jets in black hole accretion systems is a long-standing problem. It has been proposed that a jet can be formed by extracting the rotation energy of the black hole ("BZ-jet") or the accretion flow ("disk-jet"). While both models can produce collimated relativistic outflows, neither has successfully explained the observed jet morphology. By using general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations and considering nonthermal electrons accelerated by magnetic reconnection that is likely driven by magnetic eruption in the underlying accretion flow, we obtain images by radiative transfer calculations and compared them to millimeter observations of the jet in M87. We find that the BZ-jet originating from a magnetically arrested disk around a high-spin black hole can well reproduce the jet morphology, including its width and limb-brightening feature.

Probing nuclear physics with supernova gravitational waves and machine learning

ABSTRACT Core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are sources of powerful gravitational waves (GWs). We assess the possibility of extracting information about the equation of state (EOS) of high density matter from the GW signal. We use the bounce and early post-bounce signals of rapidly rotating supernovae. A large set of GW signals is generated using general relativistic hydrodynamics simulations for various EOS models. The uncertainty in the electron capture rate is parametrized by generating signals for six different models. To classify EOSs based on the GW data, we train a convolutional neural network (CNN) model. Even with the uncertainty in the electron capture rates, we find that the CNN models can classify the EOSs with an average accuracy of about 87 per cent for a set of four distinct EOS models.
