Understanding Public Perception of Internet Security in the European Union

Abstract This paper presents an extensive analysis of Internet security experiences and perceptions among European Union (EU) citizens, as detailed by data within commented graphics highlighting awareness of online privacy practices, security-related aspects and data tracking methods. The paper also examines the implications of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regarding businesses operating within the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA). Via a thorough investigation of Internet users' awareness of cookies as tracking tools and the prevalence of security-related incidents, the paper provides insights into the evolving landscape of online privacy and security. It elucidates the challenges and opportunities presented by GDPR compliance for businesses, compliance requirements, spanning core principles and broader implications of data processing practices. GDPR compliance through standard security controls: An automated approach

Since 2018, the enactment of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has bestowed distinct privileges upon each person while imposing protocols to safeguard personal information. The GDPR effectively tackles an evident requirement within our interconnected, social media-driven society. However, its compliance poses a considerable challenge, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses. This work aims to identify and select the proper countermeasures in order to comply with GDPR, by using standard security controls. Thus, we designed a tool to handle some phases of the compliance process in an almost semi-automated way. The proposed approach relies on standard security control frameworks (namely NIST SP-800-53) and can be easily adapted to different frameworks. The proposed technique was validated using our university as a case study, through a simple demonstrator, although the solution can be transparently applied to different contexts.

Experiences of GDPR in Norway: Politics of autonomy and control

This article explores the challenges Norwegian anthropologists face owing to the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The authors’ analysis reveals a tension between the need to comply with data protection regulations and preserve research autonomy and methodological integrity. The authors document how GDPR's bureaucratic control mechanisms have influenced researchers’ conceptualization of ethics, leading to a split between legalistic adherence and critical responses within the anthropological community. This situation has necessitated negotiations with various stakeholders and re‐evaluating participatory observational methods, particularly in health research, where access has become increasingly difficult. The article highlights the anthropological community's efforts to navigate these regulations through national debates, establishing forums for ethics in ethnographic research and developing strategies to maintain methodological standards while ensuring GDPR compliance. The authors advocate vigilance against the colonization of bureaucratic logic and seek to secure anthropological representation in regulatory bodies to safeguard the discipline's interests.

Blockchain based general data protection regulation compliant data breach detection system

Context Data breaches caused by insiders are on the rise, both in terms of frequency and financial impact on organizations. Insider threat originates from within the targeted organization and users with authorized access to an organization’s network, applications, or databases commit insider attacks. Motivation Insider attacks are difficult to detect because an attacker with administrator capabilities can change logs and login records to destroy the evidence of the attack. Moreover, when such a harmful insider attack goes undetected for months, it can do a lot of damage. Such data breaches may significantly impact the affected data owner’s life. Developing a system for rapidly detecting data breaches is still critical and challenging. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has defined the procedures and policies to mitigate the problems of data protection. Therefore, under the GDPR implementation, the data controller must notify the data protection authority when a data breach has occurred. Problem Statement Existing data breach detection mechanisms rely on a reliable third party. Because of the presence of a third party, such systems are not trustworthy, transparent, secure, immutable, and GDPR-compliant. Contributions To overcome these issues, this study proposed a GDPR-compliant data breach detection system by leveraging the benefits of blockchain technology. Smart contracts are written in Solidity and deployed on a local Ethereum test network to implement the solution. The proposed system can generate alert notifications against every data breach. Results We tested and deployed our proposed system, and the findings indicate that it can accomplish the insider threat mitigation objective. Furthermore, the GDPR compliance analysis of our system was also evaluated to make sure that it complies with the GDPR principles (such as right to be forgotten, access control, conditions for consent, and breach notifications). The conducted analysis has confirmed that the proposed system offers capabilities to comply with the GDPR from an application standpoint.

An Innovative approach to Improve the Quality of Pharmaceuticals approach using Cloud Computing

INTRODUCTION: Pharmaceuticals evolve alongside advancing technology driven by ongoing research and pharmaceutical companies’ production of new medications. Ongoing research and adjustment are necessary for various aspects of the pharmaceutical sector, such as patient understanding, drug testing, manufacturing, and communication of complex concepts through technology.
 OBJECTIVES: This paper discusses the intersection of cloud computing, technological advancements, and healthcare applications.
 METHODS: The Azure Cloud facilitates data processing, customer and patient engagement, employee and care team empowerment, clinical and operational optimisation, and healthcare digital transformation in the pharmaceutical industry. The integration of Microsoft Azure cloud technologies inside the pharmaceutical industry is examined in this research. RESULTS: Analysing how Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) are used in pharmaceutical manufacturing and logistics, benefits in drug research, production monitoring and supply chain optimisation are highlighted.
 CONCLUSION: Cloud computing's potential to facilitate General Data Protection Regulation compliance, improve security, and promote innovation is explored.

The GDPR introduces a set of robust principles designed to protect the rights and privacy of individuals, emphasizing the need for transparency, accountability, and proactive measures to safeguard personal data. Its extraterritorial scope extends its impact beyond European borders, compelling businesses operating globally to adhere to its regulations. This paper explores the challenges and opportunities arising from GDPR compliance, examining how organizations in the USA and Europe have navigated the evolving cybersecurity landscape. In the USA, where privacy regulations historically differed across states, the GDPR has prompted discussions around the development of federal privacy laws. The review delves into the varying approaches adopted by American businesses, considering the interplay between state and federal regulations in shaping cybersecurity strategies. Conversely, European practices reflect a proactive response to the GDPR, as organizations have embraced the principles embedded in the regulation to fortify cybersecurity frameworks. The paper investigates the evolution of cybersecurity standards in Europe, highlighting successful strategies and potential areas for improvement. By synthesizing experiences from both sides of the Atlantic, this review contributes to a deeper understanding of the GDPR's impact on cybersecurity. It sheds light on the evolving dynamics of data protection, offering insights for organizations seeking to enhance their cybersecurity resilience in the face of a rapidly changing regulatory landscape.

Purpose definition as a crucial step for determining the legal basis under the GDPR: implications for scientific research.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union, which became applicable in 2018, contains a new accountability principle. Under this principle, controllers (ie parties determining the purposes and the means of the processing of personal data) are responsible for ensuring and demonstrating the overall compliance with the GDPR. However, interpretive uncertainties of the GDPR mean that controllers must exercise considerable judgement in designing and implementing an appropriate compliance strategy, making GDPR compliance both complex and resource-intensive. In this article, we provide conceptual clarity around GDPR compliance with respect to one core aspect of the law: the determination and relevance of the purpose of personal data processing. We derive from the GDPR's text concrete requirements for purpose specification, which we subsequently apply to the area of secondary use of personal data for scientific research. We offer guidance for correctly specifying purposes of data processing under different research scenarios. To illustrate the practical necessity of purpose specification for GDPR compliance, we then show how our proposed approach can enable controllers to meet their compliance obligations, using the example of the overarching GDPR principle of lawfulness to highlight the relevance of purpose specification for the identification of a suitable legal basis.

An innovative technological infrastructure for managing SARS-CoV-2 data across different cohorts in compliance with General Data Protection Regulation.

The ORCHESTRA project, funded by the European Commission, aims to create a pan-European cohort built on existing and new large-scale population cohorts to help rapidly advance the knowledge related to the prevention of the SARS-CoV-2 infection and the management of COVID-19 and its long-term sequelae. The integration and analysis of the very heterogeneous health data pose the challenge of building an innovative technological infrastructure as the foundation of a dedicated framework for data management that should address the regulatory requirements such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The three participating Supercomputing European Centres (CINECA - Italy, CINES - France and HLRS - Germany) designed and deployed a dedicated infrastructure to fulfil the functional requirements for data management to ensure sensitive biomedical data confidentiality/privacy, integrity, and security. Besides the technological issues, many methodological aspects have been considered: Berlin Institute of Health (BIH), Charité provided its expertise both for data protection, information security, and data harmonisation/standardisation. The resulting infrastructure is based on a multi-layer approach that integrates several security measures to ensure data protection. A centralised Data Collection Platform has been established in the Italian National Hub while, for the use cases in which data sharing is not possible due to privacy restrictions, a distributed approach for Federated Analysis has been considered. A Data Portal is available as a centralised point of access for non-sensitive data and results, according to findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability (FAIR) data principles. This technological infrastructure has been used to support significative data exchange between population cohorts and to publish important scientific results related to SARS-CoV-2. Considering the increasing demand for data usage in accordance with the requirements of the GDPR regulations, the experience gained in the project and the infrastructure released for the ORCHESTRA project can act as a model to manage future public health threats. Other projects could benefit from the results achieved by ORCHESTRA by building upon the available standardisation of variables, design of the architecture, and process used for GDPR compliance.

Exploring the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance in cloud services: insights from Swedish public organizations on privacy compliance

The adoption of cloud services offers manifold advantages to public organizations; however, ensuring data privacy during data transfers has become increasingly complex since the inception of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This study investigates privacy concerns experienced by public organizations in Sweden, focusing on GDPR compliance. A qualitative interpretative approach was adopted, involving semi-structured interviews with seven employees from five public organizations in Sweden. Additionally, secondary data were gathered through an extensive literature review. The collected data were analyzed and classified using the seven privacy threat categories outlined in the LINDDUN framework. The key findings reveal several significant privacy issues when utilizing public cloud services, including unauthorized access, loss of confidentiality, lack of awareness, lack of trust, legal uncertainties, regulatory challenges, and loss of control. The study underscores the importance of implementing measures such as anonymization, pseudonymization, encryption, contractual agreements, and well-defined routines to ensure GDPR compliance. Furthermore, this research highlights the critical aspect of digital sovereignty in addressing privacy challenges associated with public cloud service adoption by public organizations in Sweden.

Enhancing Safety on Construction Sites: A UWB-Based Proximity Warning System Ensuring GDPR Compliance to Prevent Collision Hazards.

Construction is known as one of the most dangerous industries in terms of worker safety. Collisions due the excessive proximity of workers to moving construction vehicles are one of the leading causes of fatal and non-fatal accidents on construction sites internationally. Proximity warning systems (PWS) have been proposed in the literature as a solution to detect the risk for collision and to alert workers and equipment operators in time to prevent collisions. Although the role of sensing technologies for situational awareness has been recognised in previous studies, several factors still need to be considered. This paper describes the design of a prototype sensor-based PWS, aimed mainly at small and medium-sized construction companies, to collect real-time data directly from construction sites and to warn workers of a potential risk of collision accidents. It considers, in an integrated manner, factors such as cost of deployment, the actual nature of a construction site as an operating environment and data protection. A low-cost, ultra-wideband (UWB)-based proximity detection system has been developed that can operate with or without fixed anchors. In addition, the PWS is compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union. A privacy-by-design approach has been adopted and privacy mechanisms have been used for data protection. Future work could evaluate the PWS in real operational conditions and incorporate additional factors for its further development, such as studies on the timely interpretation of data.

The database contributes to research, policymaking and practice improvement in thoracic surgery by offering a comprehensive dataset for analysis. Here, we aim to shed light on the complexities of GDPR implementation and emphasize the need for comprehensive data management strategies to ensure compliance and enhance privacy protection with the contribution to the ESTS database. GDPR compliance comes with challenges, including potential human dignity and privacy rights violations. Data breaches can result in unauthorized disclosures, and non-compliance can lead to substantial fines and reputational damage. The implementation of GDPR encourages organizations to prioritize ethical data practices, security measures and transparent data handling. In conclusion, GDPR has revolutionized personal data protection by emphasizing accountability, transparency and individual rights. It has impacted organizations globally, promoting responsible data management practices. Artificial Intelligence Ethics and Challenges in Healthcare Applications: A Comprehensive Review in the Context of the European GDPR Mandate

This study examines the ethical issues surrounding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, specifically nursing, under the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The analysis delves into how GDPR applies to healthcare AI projects, encompassing data collection and decision-making stages, to reveal the ethical implications at each step. A comprehensive review of the literature categorizes research investigations into three main categories: Ethical Considerations in AI; Practical Challenges and Solutions in AI Integration; and Legal and Policy Implications in AI. The analysis uncovers a significant research deficit in this field, with a particular focus on data owner rights and AI ethics within GDPR compliance. To address this gap, the study proposes new case studies that emphasize the importance of comprehending data owner rights and establishing ethical norms for AI use in medical applications, especially in nursing. This review makes a valuable contribution to the AI ethics debate and assists nursing and healthcare professionals in developing ethical AI practices. The Early Impact of GDPR Compliance on Display Advertising: The Case of an Ad Publisher

The European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), with its explicit consent requirement, may restrict the use of personal data and shake the foundations of online advertising. The ad industry has predicted drastic loss of revenue from GDPR compliance and has been seeking alternative ways of targeting. Taking advantage of an event created by an ad publisher's request for explicit consent from users with European Union IP addresses, the authors find that for a publisher that uses a pay-per-click model, has the capacity to leverage both user behavior and web page content information for advertising, and observes high consent rates, GDPR compliance leads to modest negative effects on ad performance, bid prices, and ad revenue. The changes in ad metrics can be explained by temporal variations in consent rates. The impact is most pronounced for travel and financial services advertisers and least pronounced for retail and consumer packaged goods advertisers. The authors further find that web page context can compensate for the loss of access to users’ personal data, as the GDPR's negative impact is less pronounced when ads are posted on web pages presenting relevant content. The results suggest that publishers and advertisers should leverage targeting based on web page content after the GDPR’s rollout.

GDPR compliance verification through a user-centric blockchain approach in multi-cloud environment

With cloud-hosted web applications becoming ubiquitous, the security risks presented for user personal data that is migrated to the cloud are at an all-time high. When using a cloud-hosted web application, users only ever interact with web interfaces of the web applications and are usually completely unaware of how their data is distributed amongst the multiple cloud service providers that the web application uses, making it difficult to verify the lawful use and ownership of personal data. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) seeks to empower users to gain better control over their personal data. Blockchain-based approaches have risen in popularity over the recent years to tackle the challenge of verifying GDPR compliance in multi-cloud environments. By deploying smart contracts on the blockchain, we can create transparent and immutable logs of data processes in the hopes of automating GDPR compliance verification. However, the existing works are still limited to provide a user-centric compliance verification. To this end, we propose a user-centric, blockchain-based framework for data management in a cloud environment where all GDPR-relevant data operations take place on the blockchain through well-defined smart contracts.

Automated GDPR compliance assessment for cross-border personal data transfers in android applications

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) aims to ensure that all personal data processing activities are fair and transparent for the European Union (EU) citizens, regardless of whether these are carried out within the EU or anywhere else. To this end, it sets strict requirements to transfer personal data outside the EU. However, checking these requirements is a daunting task for supervisory authorities, particularly in the mobile app domain due to the huge number of apps available and their dynamic nature. In this paper, we propose a fully automated method for assessing the compliance of Android apps with the GDPR requirements for cross-border personal data transfers. We have applied the method to 4593 apps from the Google Play Store discovering that nearly half of the ones sending personal data are potentially non-compliant with GDPR requirements. These results reveal that there is still a very significant gap between what app providers do in practice and what is intended by the GDPR.

Data Privacy Threat Modelling for Autonomous Systems: A Survey From the GDPR's Perspective

Artificial Intelligence-based applications have been increasingly deployed in every field of life including smart homes, smart cities, healthcare services, and autonomous systems where personal data is collected across heterogeneous sources and processed using ”black-box” algorithms in opaque centralised servers. As a consequence, preserving the data privacy and security of these applications is of utmost importance. In this respect, a modelling technique for identifying potential data privacy threats and specifying countermeasures to mitigate the related vulnerabilities in such AI-based systems plays a significant role in preserving and securing personal data. Various threat modelling techniques have been proposed such as STRIDE, LINDDUN, and PASTA but none of them is sufficient to model the data privacy threats in autonomous systems. Furthermore, they are not designed to model compliance with data protection legislation like the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is fundamental to protecting data owners’ privacy as well as to preventing personal data from potential privacy-related attacks. In this article, we survey the existing threat modelling techniques for data privacy threats in autonomous systems and then analyse such techniques from the viewpoint of GDPR compliance. Following the analysis, We employ STRIDE and LINDDUN in autonomous cars, a specific use-case of autonomous systems, to scrutinise the challenges and gaps of the existing techniques when modelling data privacy threats. Prospective research directions for refining data privacy threats & GDPR-compliance modelling techniques for autonomous systems are also presented.

A compliance-based architecture for supporting GDPR accountability in cloud computing

The implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the cloud posed technical challenges for the design of compliance solutions. In particular, the accountability principle in the GDPR requires cloud providers to demonstrate their compliance, which implies that a GDPR compliance solution should maintain tamper-proof evidence for the massive data processing activities in cloud services. Additionally, the transparency of a compliance solution is essential for improving the trust of cloud users. Most of the existing solutions implemented their compliance logic as smart contracts on a blockchain to utilize its immutable transaction history for accountability and to gain user trust through its transparency. However, this widely adopted pattern in the solutions imposed the throughput constraint of blockchains on the implementation of compliance logic. In order to address this, we first conduct a requirement analysis of the GDPR accountability principle. After the analysis, we introduce a domain model of the principle and propose a modularized architecture to support the accountability in the cloud. Then, we present a prototype implementation of the architecture, in which a blockchain-based technique is used to provide immutability and data integrity for event records (e.g., data processing activities of cloud providers), while the compliance logic is not affected by the overhead of blockchains. Finally, we evaluate the prototype using benchmarks and analyses to investigate the throughput, resource consumption, and scalability of the architecture.

Consent Verification Monitoring

Advances in personalization of digital services are driven by low-cost data collection and processing, in addition to the wide variety of third-party frameworks for authentication, storage, and marketing. New privacy regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act, increasingly require organizations to explicitly state their data practices in privacy policies. When data practices change, a new version of the policy is released. This can occur a few times a year, when data collection or processing requirements are rapidly changing. Consent evolution raises specific challenges to ensuring GDPR compliance. We propose a formal consent framework to support organizations, data users, and data subjects in their understanding of policy evolution under a consent regime that supports both the retroactive and non-retroactive granting and withdrawal of consent. The contributions include (i) a formal framework to reason about data collection and access under multiple consent granting and revocation scenarios, (ii) a scripting language that implements the consent framework for encoding and executing different scenarios, (iii) five consent evolution use cases that illustrate how organizations would evolve their policies using this framework, and (iv) a scalability evaluation of the reasoning framework. The framework models are used to verify when user consent prevents or detects unauthorized data collection and access. The framework can be integrated into a runtime architecture to monitor policy violations as data practices evolve in real time. The framework was evaluated using the five use cases and a simulation to measure the framework scalability. The simulation results show that the approach is computationally scalable for use in runtime consent monitoring under a standard model of data collection and access and practice and policy evolution.

A systematic literature review of the tension between the GDPR and public blockchain systems

Blockchain technology has been rapidly growing since Bitcoin was invented in 2008. The most common type of blockchain system, public (permissionless) blockchain system, has some unique features that lead to a tension with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other similar data protection laws. In this paper, we report the results of a systematic literature review (SLR) on 114 research papers discussing and/or addressing such a tension. To the best of our knowledge, our SLR is the most comprehensive review of this tension, leading to a more in-depth and broader analysis of related research work on this important topic. Our results revealed three main types of issues: (i) difficulties in exercising data subjects’ rights such as the ‘right to be forgotten’ (RTBF) due to the immutable nature of public blockchains; (ii) difficulties in identifying roles and responsibilities in the public blockchain data processing ecosystem (particularly on the identification of data controllers and data processors); and (iii) ambiguities regarding the application of the relevant law(s) due to the distributed nature of blockchains. Our work also led to a better understanding of solutions for improving the GDPR compliance of public blockchain systems. It can help inform not only blockchain researchers and developers but also policymakers and law markers to consider how to reconcile the tension between public blockchain systems and data protection laws (the GDPR and beyond).
