What's in a name? Property titling and women's empowerment in Benin

Women’s empowerment is not just an end in itself, but also yields important development outcomes. For example, children of empowered women are healthier and enjoy greater nutrition. However, the factors influencing women’s empowerment in Benin are not well explored. To our knowledge this study is the first to investigate the determinants of women’s empowerment in Benin, with a focus on property titling. Including women’s names on titles is an important step towards gender equality and should be considered given Benin’s recent titling efforts. Land reform that lacks gender inclusivity may disempower women. Using probit, partial proportional odds models, and extended probit models which allow for endogenous treatment effects, our results show that women that possess a property title with their name on it are more empowered. For example, women with property titles that include their names are 44 % more likely to be involved in decisions on large household purchases than women that have a title without their name or no title at all. Our results also indicate that older, wealthier, and employed women are more empowered, while women in polygamous unions are disempowered.

Comprehensive Reconstructive Care for Patients of All Gender Identities After Cancer of the Breast.

Breast cancer can affect anyone; therefore, it affects people of all gender identities. Reconstructive options after breast cancer must then address the needs of all people. Our institution is unique in its provision of both high-level comprehensive breast and gender affirmation care. In our practice, patients have expressed gender diverse identities during their breast cancer reconstructive journey. In these cases, goals have deviated from traditional breast restoration, gravitating toward gender-affirming mastectomy, or results often seen with "top surgery." We present a framework for the administration of breast cancer care and discussions of reconstruction from a lens of gender inclusivity. Breast cancer is a diagnosis that has been gendered, resulting in the erasure and exclusion of reconstructive needs for people affected by breast cancer that are not cisgender women. This is illustrated through the case of a nonbinary individual seen in breast cancer clinic for multifocal ductal carcinoma in situ. Our standard review of options of "going flat," implant-based reconstruction, and autologous reconstruction led to initial confusion given their early exploration of gender identity co-occurring with a new diagnosis of breast cancer. These scenarios can be challenging when viewed solely from the perspective of a breast reconstructive surgeon or a gender-affirming surgeon alone. Both perspectives are often needed. Our gender-affirming and breast reconstructive teams have discussed methods to identify patients who require more robust discussion of gender identity and reconstructive options in the setting of breast cancer, such as chest masculinization. By adding gender-affirming surgeons to the list of providers available to counsel breast cancer patients, we may be able to better provide early education on all reconstructive options and appropriately address the needs of transgender and gender diverse people affected by breast cancer.

Gender Related Issues and Ecosystem Service Utilization Within the Volta Basin: Field Level Qualitative Experiences

Ecosystem services are considered as essential factors to determine the quality of the wellbeing of populations. This research paper focuses on establishing the contributions of ecosystem services in ensuring food security and its subsequent impact on the socio-economic wellbeing of both men and women within the Volta Basin and what accounts for unequal access to ecosystem services by men and women. It also identifies the socio-cultural issues on ecosystem utilization within the given area. The approach employed for the gathering of data for this study was multi-disciplinary and local knowledge centered. Focus Group Discussions, household surveys, stakeholder consultative meetings, seminars and workshops and biophysical observations were the methods and tools employed in obtaining the needed data. Communities selected within the Volta Basin comprised Bawku West (Kokori through Aring to Binaba), Namdan District (from Sakote through Pelungu to Damolgo), Jirapa District (from Tuggo through Konzokala to Wulling) and Lawra District (from Dasuuri through Eramon Tangzu to Bompari). Findings from the study revealed that communities within the area of study relied on natural and human modified ecosystems to sustain and maintain human lives. The findings however established that traditional laws often provided land for women, wives, and widows through means other than, for instance, equal land shares on inheritance. Systemic gender biases existed in the form of customs, beliefs, attitudes and laws that confined women to cultivating some type of crops within the study communities. Also, most communities have lost their livestock as a result of theft and some farm fields have been destroyed by cattle grazing, making it difficult to access organic manure for farming resulting in the use of chemical fertilizer. Therefore, to ensure positive contribution of the ecosystems to food security, the study recommends that government should create regulations that strengthen tenure security in the majority of the studied locations. Also, efforts should be made to document and publicize benefits of gender inclusion in ecosystem service utilization. Studies should also be conducted on human attitudes and perceptions regarding ecosystem services as a tool for understanding the complex problems associated with environmental change in the context of cultural landscapes. Promote joint planning and consensus building with Fulani, farmers, decision makers and livestock owners to help solve the issue on livestock theft and over grazing.

Portrayals of Women in Commercial Advertising: A Comparative Study Based on Contemporary Advertisements

Both Social Progress Index (SPI) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have given importance to gender equality and inclusiveness in their agendas as it is considered one of the primordial struggles essential to bring balance to the social sphere. On the other hand, advertising has been one of the primary modes of transforming and transporting these messages to the audiences seeded across the furthest corners of the remotest locations. While in the beginning, advertisements were used to serve simple requirements of sharing information among multiple receivers, over the hundreds of years of socioeconomic, cultural, political, and economic changes, made it complicated. Among many roles that an advertisement plays as a non-personal mode of communication, bringing social changes is one of them that has the power even to form values and opinions and sometimes brings phenomenal changes into behavior. The commercial form of advertainments is often found in favor of such portals that discreetly britches a few fundamental values and ethics set by the governing bodies and may lead to spreading misinformation and misconceptions. Similarly, women have been subjectified in advertisements from the very beginning with different objectives, however, for this research, the portrayals of women in commercial advertisements have broadly segregated into conventional and non-conventional categories. To analyze the distinctive differences between the two categories, the advertisements from 2015 to 2022 have been considered as the SDGs enacted by the United Nations with a prominent goal ’gender equality’ aims to bring down the conventional categorization and portrayals of gender in all forms.

Analysis of Design Agents for Mediation of Gender Inclusivity in Domestic Space: A Case Study of Chettinad Vernacular Architecture

Architects often emphasize on form and spatial layout in domestic architecture. Yet, functionality of form is evaluated by the experience of its users. This research wishes to address a central problem often ignored in domestic architecture—the connection linking gender, experience, and space. The study aims to analyze design agents that aid in mediating gender inclusivity in domestic space. This research delves into the vernacular architecture of Chettinad, which has been widely deliberated and celebrated for its climate responsiveness, materiality, sustainability, etc. Considering the rationale of cultural transition and SDG5 in promoting gender equality, the study seeks to answer the following research question: What are the agents that could help to mediate gender inclusivity in designing domestic space in India? Using snowball sampling, 25 in-depth interviews with women users and participant observation were carried out in 12 villages of the Chettinad region. Findings identified the social actions as design agents and recognized space as referential to experience. Furthermore, the article argues that this opulent tradition must be preserved, and its meaning must be altered such that the indigenous lessons may be translated to other spaces it inspires, in such a way that it empowers the people living in it. Limited to a conceptual study, this research accommodated a small sample of women respondents. The article presents insights for architects who must consider gender inclusivity as a central factor in their design.

Developing and Sustaining a Gender-Balanced Early Childhood Teaching Profession

There is a need for gender representation, equality, inclusion, and professional balance in the Early Childhood Education teaching profession just the way it is done in other professions. A mixed team in the provisions for young children has the potential to contribute to a new culture in childcare, with men and women dividing the tasks evenly between them. This is an important step towards equal opportunities for men and women, in which the future generation will also be involved. This study examined developing and sustaining a genderbalanced early childhood teaching profession. The explanatory sequential design of a mixedmethod approach was adopted for this study which involves the integration of quantitative and qualitative research approaches where the qualitative method is designed to further explain the quantitative results. In this study, the quantitative approach was explored more extensively than the qualitative one. The qualitative data was used in the subsequent interpretation for clarification of the results from the quantitative data analysis. In light of the findings from the study, it is recommended that the education workforce must challenge stereotypes and demonstrates gender equality opportunities for young children, and provides them with a more accurate reflection or example of the gender mix of their community. Training programmes, conferences, and school-toschool workshops will be organized by the researcher and other experts in the field of early childhood education to sensitize schools, educational recruiting firms, and institutions about the importance of developing and sustaining a gender-balanced early childhood teaching profession. Also, schools should encourage more participation of fathers in academic and non-academic activities so they can be more involved, and the children will in turn gain and experience substantial support.

Gender Inclusion in Agriculture: The Mediating Role of Microfinance

Este estudio buscó investigar los desafíos que presentan las mujeres agricultoras en la producción agrícola. Usando un enfoque exploratorio con análisis cualitativo, se obtuvo información que revisó los roles de las mujeres. Este documento tiene como objetivo el impacto de las microfinanzas en la inclusión de género de las mujeres con respecto al desarrollo agrícola. Los hallazgos de la investigación aportan nuevos conocimientos a la teoría de la inclusión de género en la agricultura al proporcionar una comprensión clara de cómo el acceso a los microcréditos influye en el desarrollo de las mujeres. Este estudio concluye que las mujeres juegan roles significativos en la producción agrícola a través de la agricultura rural y de pequeña escala. Sin embargo, el ímpetu demostrado que tienen las mujeres en la producción agrícola rural es plagado de diversos desafíos que, en diferentes combinaciones, limitan su plena participación.

The Impact of Gender on Individual Perceptions and Team Psychological Safety in Engineering Design Teams in Education

AbstractImproving team interactions in engineering to model gender inclusivity has been at the forefront of many initiatives in both academia and industry. However, there has been limited evidence on the impact of gender-diverse teams on psychological safety (PS). This is important because psychological safety has been shown to be a key facet for the development of innovative ideas, and has also been shown to be a cornerstone of effective teamwork. But how does the gender diversity of a team impact the development of psychological safety? The current study was developed to explore just this through an empirical study with 38 engineering design student teams over the course of an eight-week design project. These teams were designed to be half heterogeneous (either half-men and half-women, or majority men) or other half homogeneous (all men). We captured psychological safety at five time points between the homogeneous and heterogeneous teams and also explored individual dichotomous (peer-review) ratings of psychological safety at the end of the project. Results indicated that there was no difference in psychological safety between gender homogeneous and heterogeneous teams. However, women perceived themselves as more psychologically safe with other team members who identified as women in comparison to their ratings of team members that identified as men. Women also perceived themselves to be less psychologically safe with men than men felt toward team members that identify as a woman. While males did not experience any significant differences in their perceptions of psychological safety toward any gender, the results from the perspective of women still indicate a discrepancy in perceptions between genders. These results point to the need to further explore the role of minoritized groups in psychological safety research and to explore how this effect presents itself (or is covered up) at the team level, as well as investigate impacts on all-women teams.

Abstract WMP25: Female And Minority Participants Are Underrepresented In Stroke Motor Recovery Trials Over The Last Decade

Introduction: Inclusion of diverse stroke patient populations is key for generalizable and clinically meaningful stroke rehabilitation clinical trials. The aim of this study was to assess 1) the reporting and inclusion of race, ethnicity, and gender in publications on motor recovery clinical trials post-stroke, and 2) the quality of the clinical trial. Methods: All stroke motor recovery clinical trials published in ten leading rehabilitation journals in the United States between 2012 and 2021 with at least one control group were identified. The percent of different racial minorities, ethnicities, and women enrolled in the trials was extracted and calculated for those trials with available data found in the manuscript or on clinicaltrials.gov. The quality of the trial was determined by the PEDro score. Results: 57 trials (total of 3004 participants) met the inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. 97%, 37%, and 23% of the trials included reported enrollment by gender, race, and ethnicity, in the manuscript or on clinicaltrials.gov. Among trials reporting race, 59% of participants were White, followed by 30% Black, 1% Native American, 4% Asian and 10% Other. Among the trials that reported ethnicity, Hispanic or Latino participants were represented as 10% of the total participants. The average PEDro score was 7. Conclusions: While most stroke rehab trial publications were of good quality and reported data on sex, they did not report race/ethnicity, though this information was collected on clinicaltrials.gov. Improvement in the inclusion and reporting of race/ethnicity in stroke motor recovery trials is needed to allow for better generalizability in the future.

Why is the land cursed? Readers are better off not asking and simply following the alternating [End Page 189] narrators—Delilah, Bo, and twins Whitney and Jude—as the four girls navigate their interpersonal relationships, attempt to unravel the disappearance of their mothers, and confront the myriad ways they’re trapped in a dead-end town. Though a prologue knocks the suspense out of the bigger picture, smaller mysteries abound: Why did local heartthrob Bennett Harding suddenly dump Jude for Delilah, and why does his touch cause Delilah pain? What really happened to Whitney’s girlfriend Eleanor, found dead in her own front yard? What are whispers on the wind trying to tell the girls, and what secrets hide in the fields of sunflowers that surround the town? The gender politics are blunt, and well-intentioned attempts at gender inclusivity fall a little flat—some readers may find trans women being sacrificed alongside their cis sisters a pretty gruesome form of gender affirmation, even though there’s also a surviving older trans woman. However, the messy, imperfect characters, uniquely Midwestern creepiness, and scenes of cathartic violence as things escalate from bad to bloody will certainly find an audience. Nigeria’s Bloated Recurrent Expenditure: Interrogating the National Assembly’s Proposed Additional Constituencies for Women

Women representative in Nigeria executive and parliament has since 1999 continuously beaten a spiral downward trend from 35/7% in 2014 to 19/6% in 2021. This has generated debates on the need for mechanisms to engender gender inclusiveness in Nigeria. Therefore, the stride of the National Assembly to proffer a modus Vivendi to this political malaise is a welcome development. However, there are already two contending debates which the National Assembly’s additional constituencies will compound in Nigeria: over bloated recurrent expenditure and National Assembly budget. This paper examines the problems and prospects of the National Assembly’s proposed additional constituencies for women in an era of bloated recurrent expenditure in Nigeria. Using the post-colonial state and women’s empowerment framework of analysis and qualitative method of research, the paper argues that rather that filling the gap of women participation in Nigeria politics, additional constituencies for women shall aggravate two already existing problems in Nigeria: bloated recurrent expenditure, National Assembly budget and two other new ones. This paper concludes that Nigeria’s First Past the Post Electoral System has never engendered inclusive participation anywhere in the world and recommend that the National Assembly should rather change the electoral system to the Proportional Representative System.

Women in leadership, gender inequality in Nigeria, diversity and new trend of women in leadership positions in industries around the world

Background: Leaders are the people who help to define the aims and goals of groups and organizations and then help to channel the energy of the group or organisations’ members to achieve those stated aims. Many women are rising to positions of leadership around the world and in traditionally male-dominated industries. There is an upsurge in women leadership, however gender inequality, bias and discrimination still exist. Objective: This paper has reviewed the concept of women leadership, gender inequality in Nigeria and around the world, exploring the situation in the different continents and sub-continents of the world in a snapshot manner. The paper also reviewed diversity in the workplace and the different way that men and women lead their organizations. Conclusion: Despite the rise of women leaders, more inclusion and diversity in the work place, disparities still exists and is widespread around the world. This is worsened by poverty. A society that has more gender equality, diversity, and inclusiveness is better and would lead to a sustainable and meaningful growth in the economy. It is hoped that companies and governments around the world would take reducing gender inequality and promotion of women leaders seriously for a better equal and just society

Board gender diversity and workplace diversity: a machine learning approach

PurposeThis study aims to examine the association between board gender diversity (BGD) and workplace diversity and the relative importance of various board and firm characteristics in predicting diversity.Design/methodology/approachWith a novel machine learning (ML) approach, this study models the association between three workplace diversity variables and BGD using a social media data set of approximately 250,000 employee reviews. Using the tools of explainable artificial intelligence, the authors interpret the results of the ML model.FindingsThe results show that BGD has a strong positive association with the gender equality and inclusiveness dimensions of corporate diversity culture. However, BGD is found to have a weak negative association with age diversity in a company. Furthermore, the authors find that workplace diversity is an important predictor of firm value, indicating a possible channel on how BGD affects firm performance.Originality/valueThe effects of BGD on workplace diversity below management levels are mainly omitted in the current corporate governance literature. Furthermore, existing research has not considered different dimensions of this diversity and has mainly focused on its gender aspects. In this study, the authors address this research problem and examine how BGD affects different dimensions of diversity at the overall company level. This study reveals important associations and identifies key variables that should be included as a part of theoretical causal models in future research.

Mainstreaming gender in energy design practice: Insights from companies operating in sub-Saharan Africa's energy sector

There are several readily available and freely accessible toolkits, handbooks, and manuals aiming to support gender mainstreaming in energy projects. However, with most of them targeting rural areas, their applicability by energy companies operating in urban environments is limited. This paper aims to shed light on the how energy companies operating in informal urban settlements in sub-Saharan Africa integrate gender mainstreaming into their practices, with a focus on their design processes, methods and tools. To address this knowledge gap we adopted an explorative, inductive and qualitative research based on reviewing existing gender-energy nexus supports (toolkits, handbooks, and manuals) and conducting semi-structured interviews with 15 private companies offering energy solutions in informal urban settlements in Sub-Saharan Africa. These companies focus on solutions to domestic energy needs (cooking, lighting, water heating, refrigeration, space cooling, space heating, washing, tool powering) and productive use of energy to support small entrepreneurship. The interview questions were defined to collect: 1) gender considerations in the design of energy solutions for informal urban settlements; 2) methods and expertise involved in the design of energy solutions; and 3) specifics of designing for informal urban areas. The results show that: 1] The interviewed companies are not familiar with and do not use any of the readily available supports on gender mainstreaming in energy projects; 2] They do not follow any step-by-step gender inclusion strategy but try to be impartial about considering gender through familiar and established methods used along the design process; 3] They seek for better understanding of how to integrate gender in their business practices and require specific support to do so.

Storying the Gender Binary in Sport: Narrative Motifs Among Transgender, Gender Non-Conforming Athletes

This study utilized a two-tiered, thematic and structural narrative analysis to understand the ways transgender, gender non-conforming (TGNC) athletes story their experiences of sport. All participants ( N = 20) self-identified as TGNC and as athletes. A thematic narrative analysis of semi-structured interviews revealed several convergent narratives (i.e., gender sanctioning, binary gender survival, gender transition and disclosure, and gender affirming) within TGNC athlete stories. A secondary structural analysis of evaluation statements in each story offered insight into what master narratives within sport are (re)producing binary gender structures and as a result excluding non-binary athletes from participation and inclusion. The structural analysis also uncovered counter narratives within TGNC athlete stories that challenged the binarized structures of sport. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed in relation to how master narratives might be altered to foster gender inclusion beyond the binary.

Gender Equality a Fundamental Human Right: Basis for Gender Inclusive Society

Gender equality can be attained through gender inclusivity. This study uncovers the gender inequalities experienced by the 40 participants of the Training of Trainors (TOT) on Gender and Inclusion at Ateneo de Manila University conducted by Trias Southeast Asia using phenomenological inquiry. Results revealed participants had experienced discrimination in school, in the workplace, in the community and even in their own family. Hence a safe space, understanding power and stereotypes, dealing with gender and gender stereotypes, inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility and social justice (IDEAS), and vision were the factors needed in creating a gender inclusive society.

The Evolving Remote Workforce, the Multigenerational Workforce, and Supporting Employee Mental Health in the Context of Africa

This conceptual review delves into the dynamics of the African workforce, influenced by trends such as remote work, multigenerational employees, and the growing importance of employee mental health support. The adoption of remote work in Africa presents both challenges and opportunities. Limited access to reliable internet infrastructure and disparities in digital inclusion are hurdles, yet it brings benefits such as increased job opportunities and better work-life balance. The multigenerational workforce in Africa, composed of various generations, can lead to communication barriers and differing expectations, but it also offers potential for innovation and creativity. Recognizing the significance of mental health in the African context, organizations should prioritize support programs to boost employee well-being and productivity. The review discusses emerging trends like clean technology, gender inclusivity, international business opportunities, global marketing strategies, and global best practices in human resource management. The methodology involved a systematic literature search and analysis. This review, while acknowledging its knowledge cut-off date in September 2021, provides recommendations for enhancing digital infrastructure, promoting intergenerational understanding, implementing mental health support, embracing clean technology, fostering gender inclusivity, analyzing international business opportunities, implementing global marketing strategies, and incorporating global best practices in human resource management. By addressing these aspects, African organizations and policymakers can navigate these workforce transformations effectively.
