Conflict management in garment manufacturing company

Conflict is an imperative issue- even considered as burning issue in many industries- that is inevitably needed to dissolve or minimize in order to operate the organization successfully. Many researches and studies of conflict management have been conducted on several industries, but this researcher eagerly recognized to present an exclusive literature review on garment manufacturing industry not only from theoretical perspective but also based on his valuable long work-experience in this garment industry. It is hypothetically deemed by the garment factory owners and top management in Bangladesh that, somebody should research on this real-world issue in light of his/her acquaintance pertinent to this industry. The main purpose of this literature review is to present the practical and pervasive state of conflict management in garment manufacturing companies, and to find the techniques of resolution according to this researcher’s practical experience. This study provides an extensive literature review on conflict management in the context of Bangladesh garment manufacturing industry. It described meticulously about conflict zones, conflict types, conflict process, and some treasured techniques of conflict control- especially applicable for garment factories. It is amplified that, to control or minimize conflict in garment factory, conflict resolution skills and attributes should be taken into consideration, and top management’s positive intention is required to establish an effective conflict management system. Furthermore, along with the literature review, this study recommends some pragmatic solutions incorporating to different perspectives of conflict patterns and styles, and the guidelines of this study will lead the garment organizations to formulate defacto conflict management strategies for their employees.

Unveiling the dynamics of seam performance: a regression analysis approach for predictive modeling

The performance of seams is crucial for the garment manufacturing industry's sustainability. This study delves into the factors impacting seam slippage, strength, and efficiency. By analyzing fabric specifications (weight and weave), machine settings (presser foot pressure and speed), and seam direction, the study uncovers their influence on seam properties. Samples of 100% cotton plain and twill fabrics, both of low (120 g/m2 to140 g/m2 ) and high (275 g/m2 to320 g/m2) weights, were chosen. Lock stitch type (301) and superimposed seam class were employed, with samples stitched in both weft and warp directions using the same stitch type, seam class, and substantial core spun sewing thread. An experimental design was created using variable parameters (fabric weight, weave, machine speed, and presser foot pressure), resulting in a 23 × 32 regression analysis. This design facilitated the development of 72 stitched samples. The regression analysis yielded an optimized solution, with square regressions indicating significant seam strength (85%) and efficiency (93%). In summary, this research provides insights into optimizing seam performance by understanding the interplay of fabric, machine, and stitching parameters, crucial for enhancing the quality and durability of garment seams.

Do Labour Welfare Policies Matter for Workers? Evidence from the Garment Supply Chain Industry in Bangladesh

AbstractThe paper focusses on workers’ opinions in regard to welfare policies enacted under the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006. The study investigates two questions: Do labour welfare policies under labour law really matter for workers? If so, to what extent are such welfare policies practised in the global garment supply chain industry in Bangladesh? The Binary Logistic Regression technique has been used to assess the opinions of garment workers as to whether their level of satisfaction increases by workers’ welfare facility interventions. The data were collected from compliant and export-oriented factories between July 2021 and August 2021 in three Upazilas-Savar Ashulia (Dhaka District) and Gazipur Sadar (Gazipur District) in Bangladesh. This study demonstrates that overtime facilities, medical facilities, safety measures, restroom facilities, lunchroom facilities, and childcare facilities can play a pivotal role in increasing the satisfaction level of the workers. Given the similar socio-economic and geographical backgrounds, this research can be applied to the garment manufacturing industries of other South Asian countries. It serves as a valuable tool for understanding workers' attitudes and beliefs about welfare provisions. By applying the findings of this study, one can better comprehend the needs of the workers in terms of various labor welfare motivational tools.

The Nexus Between Sources of Workers’ Power in the Garment Manufacturing Industries of Lesotho and Eswatini

AbstractWorkers in the garment manufacturing industry are often subjected to violations of their rights and are exposed to low wages and difficult working conditions. In response to the exposure of these violations in the media, major fashion brands and retailers subject their suppliers to labour codes of conduct. Despite these codes of conduct being largely ineffective, this comparative case study of garment manufacturers operating from Lesotho and Eswatini illustrates that such codes provide workers and trade unions with access to bargaining leverage that they would otherwise not have. A framework with a synthesis of potential sources of workers’ power is developed and related to global production networks, collective mobilisation, the nature of the state, as well as national and transnational scales of organising. Based on historical case studies of the two countries, this paper illustrates how unions in the two countries followed different approaches to using this source of power in relation to other sources of power. These approaches were shaped by their contexts and strategic choices. Theoretically, it is argued that sources of workers’ power are analytically distinct, but are relational and operate best when seen as mutually reinforcing. The term ‘power resource nexus’ is used to frame this potential mutual reinforcement of sources of power.

Ergonomic Assessment Using the Ergonomic Checklist Method in the Production Unit

PT XYZ is engaged in the garment manufacturing industry and has become a garment manufacturing company with exports to five continents with modern manufacturing facilities in Southeast Asia. In the current condition of PT XYZ, there are still vulnerable and risky areas with the potential for work accidents. This prone and risky condition can be seen in the work environment where there are still scattered items, a low level of security, insufficient lighting, insufficient air ventilation, inadequate hand tools for workers, or the way employees lift materials where employees still make bending and twisting movements that are harmful to employee’s health. Based on the book “Ergonomic Checkpoints: Practical and Easy-to-Implement Solutions for Improving Safety, Health, and Working Conditions” published by the International Labour Organization and the International Energy Agency, this study uses observation and interviews to collect data, using 132 ergonomic checklist questions and provides improvement recommendations. From the research 15 points still need to be done correctly, so they are prioritized for improvement. Recommended improvements include creating two-way lanes in the production unit to facilitate worker mobility and other recommendations.

Investigating Root Causes of Sewing Defects Using TQM Tools for Quality Improvement in the Knit Garment Industry

To increase customer satisfaction in the highly dynamic and competitive apparel industry, it is essential to manufacture garments of superior quality. The study aimed to investigate the underlying causes of sewing faults and offer solutions for enhancing quality to a 100% export-oriented knit garment industry in Bangladesh. The study employed a comprehensive approach using quantitative and qualitative research methods to evaluate garment faults systematically. The whole garment inspection procedure was done on five common garment styles to collect the quantitative data. Some novel TQM (Total Quality Management) tools, Pareto analysis, WH questionnaire, cause-effect diagram, and a highly potential focus group panel were employed. The findings indicate the most prevalent faults like an open seam, skip stitch, and label mistake, accounting for 50 per cent, 29 per cent, and 7 per cent of all observed defects, respectively, and their remedies. The research's significance lies in its holistic approach to quality improvement in the knit garment manufacturing industries. This study provides a valuable framework for enhancing product quality and reducing rejection rates by pinpointing crucial defects, their origins, and effective remedies.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Entrepreneurial Marketing (EM) on Marketing Performance (MP) with Marketing Assiatant (MA) as a mediation variable. The data in the study consisted of 235 populations with 149 samples. Data analysis in this study used quantitative methods with the SmartPLS 3.2.9 test tool. MA is government assistance help to maintain the sustainability of the SMEs industries, considering that this sector is also a social safety net.

Picture fuzzy MABAC method based on prospect theory for multiple attribute group decision making and its application to suppliers selection

In the garment manufacturing industry, purchasing management is an important link. The materials of making clothes often need high cost. In addition, customers put forward a request in the quality of clothes. Thus, choosing an optimal supplier is an essential part of job. Reaching cooperation with an optimal supplier not only can help garment manufacturer improve the quality of clothes but also is benefit to reduce the cost of producing. Most importantly, it can improve the competitiveness of manufacture enterprises. So, it is important for managers to find an optimal supplier and make a cooperation with it. In this paper, we analysis an issue about choosing an optimal supplier during four different suppliers. With analyzing this problem, we can introduce an extended method under picture fuzzy environment to evaluate and choose an optimal supplier. In this article, we describe some basic knowledges about picture fuzzy sets (PFSs) and picture fuzzy numbers (PFNs). Then, we introduce the extension of MABAC method which is on the basis of prospect theory (PT) with picture fuzzy numbers (PF-PT-MABAC) and utilize the PF-PT-MABAC model to evaluate different suppliers to choose an optimal supplier. Finally, we compare the result of PF-PT-MABAC with the result of traditional MABAC, PFWG operators and traditional TODIM method to test the efficiency of PF-PT-MABAC model.

Technology and Education Inputs for Productivity Enhancement in Garment Manufacturing in the Developing World

Efficient production management in the garment manufacturing industry is estimated by using work measurement techniques. These techniques are based on standard processing timings. Several studies have been undertaken using the time study technique to enhance productivity of the garment production lines in an apparel manufacturing factory. Efficiency is translated into the time spent on carrying out a particular function, this time consumption is dependent upon the worker’s level of fatigue and quality of output. The entire onus of responsibility of the worker’s output becomes anchored on his or her ability to carry out repetitive actions over long durations of time.Objectives: This paper examines the work of various scholars as well as scrutinizes the performance of certain repetitive actions in the garment manufacturing process in apparel industries employing large numbers of workers. The objective is to project a rationale for the development of work aids to significantly enhance productivity.Methods: A secondary data review is being conducted to find out the work of other researchers in the field of garment manufacturing. The author has developed his own contribution in the form of work aid interventions to help in the process. A Review of literature on the subject was attempted to obtain the required information and insights on the subject.Finding: There is a widely felt need for the creation of active work aids in the garment manufacturing industry to promote the worker efficiency as also the overall productivity of the industry.Scope: The research based study has large and far-reaching scope for the garment manufacturing industry. All manufacturing units are constantly on the lookout for promoting efficiency and productivity. They are willing to appreciate all forms of interventions to improve time management and enhanced output of products. The findings of this review paper have broad based applicability for the garment manufacturing industry not only in India but also in most of the developing world.

Benefits of Using CAD for Garment Manufacturing: A Perception Analysis

The present research investigated the perception of four stakeholders’ viz. industry managers/supervisors, CAD practitioners working in Garment Manufacturing industry and faculty and students from Fashion Technology discipline towards CAD adoption in the Indian scenario. Initial interactions with the CAD vendors revealed that the adoption of CAD by Indian Garment Manufacturers is significantly low compared to their counter parts of neighbouring countries despite the acceptance of the fact by majority that the advancement of technology has a clear impact on manufacturing efficiency. This mismatch led to the present research. The study employed a survey method using a structured questionnaire to obtain responses from the above-mentioned four stakeholders. Findings proved that all the four respondents viz Industry Managers, Industry CAD practitioners; Academic Faculty and Academic Students are of the opinion that CAD systems are useful and beneficial to the garment industry.

Investigation of ergonomic working conditions of sewing and cuttingmachine operators of clothing industry

The textile industry is a very labour intensive industry which mainly comprises of small and medium enterprises (SMEs).In developing countries, usually occupational health and safety programs are focused on large-scale organisations. Across-sectional study on evaluating ergonomics risk factors associated with task performing strategies has been carriedout at cutting and sewing units of a garment industry organisation. A reliable direct observational ergonomics riskassessment method Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) was used to find out the risk associated with workingpostures adopted by the workers. Data was collected through physical observations, walkthrough, interviews, and videorecordings. Data analysis was carried out on 180 selected postures by using REBA method. It concluded that overallworking strategies were poorly designed as more than 30% of postures highlighted a high level of risk of MSDs thatnecessitates immediate investigation for improvement. Major causes of risk were linked with the postural movementsattached with the wrist, lower arm, and neck. The findings of the study add to the understanding of working conditionsof cutting and sewing activities at garment manufacturing industries, these could help in the design of ergonomicsinterventions for reducing musculoskeletal symptoms and improving job quality which eventually increases workproductivity.

The role of organisational culture in organisational change towards sustainability: evidence from the garment manufacturing industry

This paper explores the competing role of organisational culture in organisational change towards sustainability. Drawing on the competing values framework, data was collected by interviewing senior executives and sustainability managers of a leading multinational garment manufacturing organisation based in Sri Lanka. The study finds that organisational culture tends to play a proactive role by going beyond the compliances and regulatory requirements in organisational change towards sustainability. Four competing cultural values appear to shape their corporate sustainability approach, namely (i) people-oriented changes (e.g. empowerment, training, development, team orientation, leadership), (ii) growth-oriented changes (e.g. sustainability innovations, continuous improvements, community engagement), (iii) productivity- and efficiency-oriented changes (e.g. use of professional recommendations, open communication), and (iv) stability- and control-oriented changes (e.g. sustainability budgeting, investment appraisal, life-cycle assessment). The case organisation is more likely to be driven by an integrated approach of the four competing cultural values rather than by one dominant approach. The study contributes to the organisational culture and sustainability literature by highlighting the importance of aligning competing cultural values as a means of addressing sustainability challenges, in the much-debated garment manufacturing industry in the South Asian context. Finally, a framework for sustainability organisational culture is proposed.

Prediction of Garment Production Cycle Time Based on a Neural Network

The process of garment production has always been a black box. The production time of different clothing is different and has great changes, thus managers cannot make a production plan accurately. With the world entering the era of industry 4.0 and the accumulation of big data, machine learning can provide services for the garment manufacturing industry. The production cycle time is the key to control the production process. In order to predict the production cycle time more accurately and master the production process in the garment manufacturing process, a neural network model of production cycle time prediction is established in this paper. Using a trained neural network to predict the production cycle time, the overall error of 6 groups is within 5%, and that of 3 groups is between 5% and 10%. Therefore, this neural network can be used to predict the future production cycle time and predict the overall production time of clothing.

Implementation of an Automated Manufacturing Process for Smart Clothing: The Case Study of a Smart Sports Bra

The garment manufacturing industry is a labor-intensive industry, with one of the slowest transitions to automation. Hence, it is essential to build a smart factory based on automated systems to improve productivity and allow responsive production in the market. In this study, the manufacturing processes for a smart sports bra were established and optimized using various automated machines. For this system, computer-based 3D virtual design software, a technical embroidery machine, an automatic cutting machine, an industrial robot arm with gripper, and an industrial pattern sewing machine were used. The design and materials of the sports bra were selected considering embroidery, cutting, robot gripping, and sewing processes. In addition, conductive thread and light-emitting diode (LED) sequences were used to implement smart functions to the sports bra. Transport of intermediate materials, work orders, and process conditions were optimized to improve the flexible connection of each process and the quality of the final product. This study suggests the concept of the automated manufacturing system that minimizes human intervention by connecting the processes needed to produce a smart sports bra using various automation equipment and programs already used in the industry.

An implementation of lean manufacturing technology in enhancing efficiency in garment manufacturing industry with small and medium size

Lean manufacturing technology has been applied in industry to eliminate wastes, enhance efficiency and increase competition ability. While some case studies were evaluated successfully, others faced with big challenges. Actually, lean was applied in different ways due to types and size of industry or organization. This paper would present an lean implementation process, in which lean tools are integrated in simultaneously. Requirements on system manufacturing capacity should be met, so necessary resources would be determined. Manufacturing layout and work flows would be created smoothly. The lean implementation process was applied in some case studies in garment industry with small and medium size, which show the efficiency and effectiveness of the lean technology in the practice systems. The research shows the good results on some performance key indexes such as productivity, ability to satisfy the orders and good working environment.

Linkage between TPM, people management and organizational performance

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore an empirical investigation of the linkage between total productive maintenance (TPM), people management (PEM) and organizational performance in the apparel industry of Bangladesh. This study also explores the direct and mediating effect of TPM on organizational performance.Design/methodology/approachEmpirical data were collected using a close-ended structured questionnaire from 227 small, medium and large-scale garment manufacturing industries. The causal relationships between PEM, TPM and organizational performance were examined using structural equation modeling.FindingsThe findings of this study have provided significant evidence that the PEM has both direct and indirect impact (through TPM) on organizational performance. The results of the analysis also indicated that TPM has direct and mediating effects on operational performance.Research limitations/implicationsData for measuring PEM practices and organizational performance were collected from the same source, assuming that PEM practices are uniform across the organization. Therefore, response bias is not unexpected.Originality/valueThis study explores the interdimensional linkage between PEM, TPM and organizational performance and argues based on the empirical data in the context of the apparel industry in Bangladesh. The apparel industry is a complex manufacturing system synchronizing man, machine and material. The findings provide empirical evidence that employee engagement and practice of TPM will enhance the operational performance of the apparel industries.

A novel fuzzy multi-objective circular supplier selection and order allocation model for sustainable closed-loop supply chains

Maximizing the value of resources and producing less waste are strategic decisions affecting sustainability and competitive advantage. Sustainable closed-loop supply chains (CLSCs) are designed to minimize waste by circling back (repairing, reselling, or dismantling for parts) previously discarded products into the value chain. This study presents a novel two-stage fuzzy supplier selection and order allocation model in a CLSC. In Stage 1, we use the fuzzy best-worst method (BWM) to select the most suitable suppliers according to economic, environmental, social, and circular criteria. In Stage 2, we use a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming (MOMILP) model to design a multi-product, multi-period, CLSC network, and inventory-location-routing, vehicle scheduling, and quantity discounts considerations. In the proposed MOMILP, the total network costs, the undesired environmental effects, and the lost sales are minimized while job opportunities and sustainable supplier purchases are maximized. A fuzzy goal programming approach is proposed to transform the MOMILP into a single objective model. We present a case study to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method in the garment manufacturing and distribution industry.
