It is shown that a consistent description of the position of the recently discovered giant Gamow-Teller resonance in 208Pb and the renormalization of the strength, through coupling to the Δ(1230) isobar region, can be achieved in terms of π- and ρ-meson exchange forces, the coupling constants being known. Corrections for the ω- and k-dependences of the effective interactions are considered, and found to nearly cancel each other. The success of our simple description supports the boson-exchange model for the nucleon-nucleon interaction and the effective interaction in nuclei, at least for the σ 1 · σ 2 τ 1 · τ 2 component.
