Stellar Metallicities and Gradients in the Faint M31 Satellites Andromeda XVI and Andromeda XXVIII

We present ∼300 stellar metallicity measurements in two faint M31 dwarf galaxies, Andromeda XVI (M V = −7.5) and Andromeda XXVIII (M V = –8.8), derived using metallicity-sensitive calcium H and K narrowband Hubble Space Telescope imaging. These are the first individual stellar metallicities in And XVI (95 stars). Our And XXVIII sample (191 stars) is a factor of ∼15 increase over literature metallicities. For And XVI, we measure 〈[Fe/H]〉=−2.17−0.05+0.05 , σ[Fe/H]=0.33−0.07+0.07 , and ∇[Fe/H] = −0.23 ± 0.15 dex Re−1 . We find that And XVI is more metal-rich than Milky Way ultrafaint dwarf galaxies of similar luminosity, which may be a result of its unusually extended star formation history. For And XXVIII, we measure 〈[Fe/H]〉=−1.95−0.04+0.04 , σ[Fe/H]=0.34−0.05+0.05 , and ∇[Fe/H]= −0.46 ± 0.10 dex Re−1 , placing it on the dwarf galaxy mass–metallicity relation. Neither galaxy has a metallicity distribution function (MDF) with an abrupt metal-rich truncation, suggesting that star formation fell off gradually. The stellar metallicity gradient measurements are among the first for faint (L ≲ 106 L ⊙) galaxies outside the Milky Way halo. Both galaxies’ gradients are consistent with predictions from the FIRE simulations, where an age–gradient strength relationship is the observational consequence of stellar feedback that produces dark matter cores. We include a catalog for community spectroscopic follow-up, including 19 extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H] < –3.0) star candidates, which make up 7% of And XVI’s MDF and 6% of And XXVIII’s.

A new perspective on the stellar mass-metallicity relation of quiescent galaxies from the LEGA-C survey

We investigated the stellar mass-metallicity relation (MZR) using a sample of 637 quiescent galaxies with 10.4 ≤ log(M*/M⊙) &lt; 11.7 selected from the LEGA-C survey at 0.6 ≤ z ≤ 1. We derived mass-weighted stellar metallicities using full-spectral fitting. We find that while lower-mass galaxies are both metal-rich and metal-poor, there are no metal-poor galaxies at high masses, and that metallicity is bounded at low values by a mass-dependent lower limit. This lower limit increases with mass, empirically defining a MEtallicity-Mass Exclusion (MEME) zone. We find that the spectral index MgFe ≡ √Mgb × Fe4383, a proxy for the stellar metallicity, also shows a mass-dependent lower limit resembling the MEME relation. Crucially, MgFe is independent of stellar population models and fitting methods. By constructing the metallicity enrichment histories, we find that, after the first gigayear, the star formation history of galaxies has a mild impact on the observed metallicity distribution. Finally, from the average formation times, we find that galaxies populate differently the metallicity-mass plane at different cosmic times, and that the MEME limit is recovered by galaxies that formed at z ≥ 3. Our work suggests that the stellar metallicity of quiescent galaxies is bounded by a lower limit which increases with the stellar mass. On the other hand, low-mass galaxies can have metallicities as high as galaxies ∼1 dex more massive. This suggests that, at log(M*/M⊙)≥10.4, rather than lower-mass galaxies being systematically less metallic, the observed MZR might be a consequence of the lack of massive metal-poor galaxies.

The Scale of Stellar Yields: Implications of the Measured Mean Iron Yield of Core Collapse Supernovae

The scale of α-element yields is difficult to predict from theory because of uncertainties in massive star evolution, supernova physics, and black hole formation, and it is difficult to constrain empirically because the impact of higher yields can be compensated by greater metal loss in galactic winds. We use a recent measurement of the mean iron yield of core collapse supernovae (CCSN) by Rodriguez et al., y¯Fecc=0.058±0.007M⊙ , to infer the scale of α-element yields by assuming that the plateau of [α/Fe] abundance ratios observed in low-metallicity stars represents the yield ratio of CCSN. For a plateau at [α/Fe]cc = 0.45, we find that the population-averaged yields of O and Mg are about equal to the solar abundance of these elements, logyOcc/ZO,⊙=logyMgcc/ZMg,⊙=−0.01±0.1 , where yXcc is the mass of element X produced by massive stars per unit mass of star formation. The inferred O and Fe yields agree with predictions of the Sukhbold et al. CCSN models assuming their Z9.6+N20 neutrino-driven engine, a scenario in which many progenitors with M < 40M ⊙ implode to black holes rather than exploding. The yields are lower than assumed in many models of the galaxy mass–metallicity relation, reducing the level of outflows needed to match observed abundances. Our one-zone chemical evolution models with η=Ṁout/Ṁ*≈0.6 evolve to solar metallicity at late times. By further requiring that models reach [α/Fe] ≈ 0 at late times, we infer a Hubble-time integrated Type Ia supernova rate of 1.1×10−3M⊙−1 , compatible with estimates from supernova surveys.

The Environmental Dependence of the Stellar Mass - Gas Metallicity Relation in Horizon Run 5

Abstract Metallicity offers a unique window into the baryonic history of the cosmos, being instrumental in probing evolutionary processes in galaxies between different cosmic environments. We aim to quantify the contribution of these environments to the scatter in the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) of galaxies. By analysing the galaxy distribution within the cosmic skeleton of the Horizon Run 5 cosmological hydrodynamical simulation at redshift z = 0.625, computed using a careful calibration of the T-ReX filament finder, we identify galaxies within three main environments: nodes, filaments and voids. We also classify galaxies based on the dynamical state of the clusters and the length of the filaments in which they reside. We find that the cosmic environment significantly contributes to the scatter in the MZR; in particular, both the gas metallicity and its average relative standard deviation increase when considering denser large-scale environments. The difference in the average metallicity between galaxies within relaxed and unrelaxed clusters is ≈0.1dex, with both populations displaying positive residuals, δZg, from the averaged MZR. Moreover, the difference in metallicity between node and void galaxies accounts for ≈0.14 dex in the scatter of the MZR at stellar mass M⋆ ≈ 109.35 M⊙. Finally, both the average [O/Fe] in the gas and the galaxy gas fraction decrease when moving to higher large-scale densities in the simulation, suggesting that the cores of cosmic environments host – on average – older and more massive galaxies, whose enrichment is affected by a larger number of Type Ia Supernova events.

Chemical evolution of local post-starburst galaxies: implications for the mass–metallicity relation

ABSTRACT We use the stellar fossil record to constrain the stellar metallicity evolution and star-formation histories of the post-starburst (PSB) regions within 45 local PSB galaxies from the MaNGA survey. The direct measurement of the regions’ stellar metallicity evolution is achieved by a new two-step metallicity model that allows for stellar metallicity to change at the peak of the starburst. We also employ a Gaussian process noise model that accounts for correlated errors introduced by the observational data reduction or inaccuracies in the models. We find that a majority of PSB regions (69 per cent at &amp;gt;1σ significance) increased in stellar metallicity during the recent starburst, with an average increase of 0.8 dex and a standard deviation of 0.4 dex. A much smaller fraction of PSBs are found to have remained constant (22 per cent) or declined in metallicity (9 per cent, average decrease 0.4 dex, standard deviation 0.3 dex). The pre-burst metallicities of the PSB galaxies are in good agreement with the mass–metallicity (MZ) relation of local star-forming galaxies. These results are consistent with hydrodynamic simulations, which suggest that mergers between gas-rich galaxies are the primary formation mechanism of local PSBs, and rapid metal recycling during the starburst outweighs the impact of dilution by any gas inflows. The final mass-weighted metallicities of the PSB galaxies are consistent with the MZ relation of local passive galaxies. Our results suggest that rapid quenching following a merger-driven starburst is entirely consistent with the observed gap between the stellar mass–metallicity relations of local star-forming and passive galaxies.

Binaries drive high Type Ia supernova rates in dwarf galaxies

ABSTRACT The scaling of the specific Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) rate with host galaxy stellar mass $\dot{\text{N}}_\text{Ia} / \text{M}_\star \sim \text{M}_\star ^{-0.3}$ as measured in ASAS-SN and DES strongly suggests that the number of SNe Ia produced by a stellar population depends inversely on its metallicity. We estimate the strength of the required metallicity dependence by combining the average star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies as a function of their stellar mass with the mass–metallicity relation (MZR) for galaxies and common parametrizations for the SN Ia delay-time distribution. The differences in SFHs can account for only ∼30 per cent of the increase in the specific SN Ia rate between stellar masses of M⋆ = 1010 and 107.2 M⊙. We find that an additional metallicity dependence of approximately ∼Z−0.5 is required to explain the observed scaling. This scaling matches the metallicity dependence of the close binary fraction observed in APOGEE, suggesting that the enhanced SN Ia rate in low-mass galaxies can be explained by a combination of their more extended SFHs and a higher binary fraction due to their lower metallicities. Due to the shape of the MZR, only galaxies below M⋆ ≈ 3 × 109 M⊙ are significantly affected by the metallicity-dependent SN Ia rates. The $\dot{\text{N}}_\text{Ia} / \text{M}_\star \sim \text{M}_\star ^{-0.3}$ scaling becomes shallower with increasing redshift, dropping by factor of ∼2 at 107.2 M⊙ between z = 0 and 1 with our ∼Z−0.5 scaling. With metallicity-independent rates, this decrease is a factor of ∼3. We discuss the implications of metallicity-dependent SN Ia rates for one-zone models of galactic chemical evolution.

Low gas-phase metallicities of ultraluminous infrared galaxies are a result of dust obscuration

Despite advances in observational data, theoretical models, and computational techniques to simulate key physical processes in the formation and evolution of galaxies, the stellar mass assembly of galaxies still remains an unsolved problem today. Optical spectroscopic measurements appear to show that the gas-phase metallicities of local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are significantly lower than those of normal star-forming galaxies. This difference has resulted in the claim that ULIRGs are fueled by metal-poor gas accretion from the outskirts\cite{Mannucci10}. Here we report on a new set of gas-phase metallicity measurements making use of the far-infrared spectral lines of [O{\sc iii}]52 $\mu$m, [O{\sc iii}]88 $\mu$m, and [N{\sc iii}]57 $\mu$m instead of the usual optical lines. Photoionization models have resulted in a metallicity diagnostic based on these three lines that break the electron density degeneracy and reduce the scatter of the correlation significantly. Using new data from SOFIA and archival data from Herschel Space Observatory, we find that local ULIRGs lie on the mass-metallicity relation of star-forming galaxies and have metallicities comparable to other galaxies with similar stellar masses and star formation rates. The lack of a departure suggests that ULIRGs follow the same mass assembly mechanism as luminous star-forming galaxies and $\sim 0.3$ dex under-abundance in metallicities derived from optical lines is a result of heavily obscured metal-rich gas which has a negligible effect when using the FIR line diagnostics.

The Stellar Mass versus Stellar Metallicity Relation of Star-forming Galaxies at 1.6 ≤ z ≤ 3.0 and Implications for the Evolution of the α-enhancement

Abstract We measure the relationship between stellar mass and stellar metallicity for 1336 star-forming galaxies at 1.6 ≤ z ≤ 3.0 using rest-frame far-ultraviolet spectra from the zCOSMOS-deep survey. High signal-to-noise ratio composite spectra containing stellar absorption features are fit with stellar population synthesis model spectra of a range of stellar metallicity. We find stellar metallicities, which mostly reflect instantaneous iron abundances, scaling as [ Fe / H ] = − ( 0.81 ± 0.01 ) + ( 0.32 + 0.03 ) log ( M * / 10 10 M ⊙ ) across the stellar mass range of 109 ≲ M */M ⊙ ≲ 1011. The instantaneous oxygen-to-iron ratio (α-enhancement) inferred using the gas-phase mass–metallicity relation is on average found to be O / Fe ≈ 0.47 , being higher than the local O / Fe ≈ 0 . The observed changes in [O/Fe] and [Fe/H] are reproduced in simple gas-regulator models with steady star formation histories. Our models show that the [O/Fe] is determined almost entirely by the instantaneous specific star formation rate alone while being independent of the mass and the characteristic of the gas regulation. We also find that the locations of ∼ 1010 M ⊙ galaxies at z ∼ 2 in the [O/Fe]–metallicity planes are in remarkable agreement with the sequence of low-metallicity thick-disk stars in our own Galaxy. This manifests a beautiful concordance between the results of Galactic archeology and observations of high-redshift Milky Way progenitors. There remains, however, a question of how and when the old metal-rich, low α/Fe stars seen in the bulge had formed by z ∼ 2 because such a stellar population is not seen in our data and is difficult to explain in the context of our models.

Explaining the scatter in the galaxy mass–metallicity relation with gas flows

ABSTRACT The physical origin of the scatter in the relation between galaxy stellar mass and the metallicity of the interstellar medium, i.e. the mass–metallicity relation (MZR), reflects the relative importance of key processes in galaxy evolution. The eagle cosmological hydrodynamical simulation is used to investigate the correlations between the residuals of the MZR and the residuals of the relations between stellar mass and, respectively, specific inflow, outflow, and star formation rate as well as the gas fraction for central galaxies. At low redshift, all these residuals are found to be anticorrelated with the residuals of the MZR for M⋆/M⊙ ≲ 1010. The correlations between the residuals of the MZR and the residuals of the other relations with mass are interrelated, but we find that gas fraction, specific inflow rate, and specific outflow rate all have at least some independent influence on the scatter of the MZR. We find that, while for M⋆/M⊙ &amp;gt; 1010.4 the specific mass of the nuclear black hole is most important, for M⋆/M⊙ ≲ 1010.3 gas fraction and specific inflow rate are the variables that correlate most strongly with the MZR scatter. The time-scales involved in the residual correlations and the time that galaxies stay above the MZR are revealed to be a few Gyr. However, most galaxies that are below the MZR at z = 0 have been below the MZR throughout their lifetimes.

The SkyMapper-Gaia RVS view of the Gaia–Enceladus–Sausage – an investigation of the metallicity and mass of the Milky Way’s last major merger

ABSTRACT We characterize the Gaia–Enceladus–Sausage kinematic structure recently discovered in the Galactic halo using photometric metallicities from the SkyMapper survey, and kinematics from Gaia radial velocities measurements. By examining the metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) of stars binned in kinematic/action spaces, we find that the $\sqrt{J_R}$ versus Lz space allows for the cleanest selection of Gaia–Enceladus–Sausage stars with minimal contamination from disc or halo stars formed in situ or in other past mergers. Stars with $30 \le \sqrt{J_R} \le 50$ (kpc km s−1)1/2 and −500 ≤ Lz ≤ 500 kpc km s−1 have a narrow MDF centred at [Fe/H] = −1.17 dex with a dispersion of 0.34 dex. This [Fe/H] estimate is more metal-rich than literature estimates by 0.1−0.3 dex. Based on the MDFs, we find that selection of Gaia–Enceladus–Sausage stars in other kinematic/action spaces without additional population information leads to contaminated samples. The clean Gaia–Enceladus–Sausage sample selected according to our criteria is slightly retrograde and lies along the blue sequence of the high VT halo colour magnitude diagram dual sequence. Using a galaxy mass–metallicity relation derived from cosmological simulations and assuming a mean stellar age of 10 Gyr, we estimate the mass of the Gaia–Enceladus–Sausage progenitor satellite to be 108.85–9.85 M⊙, which is consistent with literature estimates based on disc dynamic and simulations. Additional information on detailed abundances and ages would be needed for a more sophisticated selection of purely Gaia–Enceladus–Sausage stars.

Simple Yet Powerful: Hot Galactic Outflows Driven by Supernovae

Abstract Supernovae (SNe) drive multiphase galactic outflows, impacting galaxy formation; however, cosmological simulations mostly use ad hoc feedback models for outflows, making outflow-related predictions from first principles problematic. Recent small-box simulations resolve individual SNe remnants in the interstellar medium (ISM), naturally driving outflows and permitting a determination of the wind loading factors of energy η E , mass , and metals . In this Letter, we compile small-box results, and find consensus that the hot outflows are much more powerful than the cool outflows: (i) hot outflows generally dominate the energy flux, and (ii) their specific energy e s,h is 10–1000 times higher than cool outflows. Moreover, the properties of hot outflows are remarkably simple: is almost invariant over four orders of magnitude of star formation surface density. Also, we find tentatively that 0.5. If corroborated by more simulation data, these correlations reduce the three hot phase loading factors into one. Finally, this one parameter is closely related to whether the ISM has a “breakout” condition. The narrow range of indicates that hot outflows cannot escape dark matter halos with log . This mass is also where the galaxy mass–metallicity relation reaches its plateau, implying a deep connection between hot outflows and galaxy formation. We argue that hot outflows should be included explicitly in cosmological simulations and (semi-)analytic modeling of galaxy formation.

Present-day mass-metallicity relation for galaxies using a new electron temperature method

Aims.We investigate electron temperature (Te) and gas-phase oxygen abundance (ZTe) measurements for galaxies in the local Universe (z &lt; 0.25). Our sample comprises spectra from a total of 264 emission-line systems, ranging from individual HIIregions to whole galaxies, including 23 composite HIIregions from star-forming main sequence galaxies in the MaNGA survey.Methods.We utilise 130 of these systems with directly measurableTe(OII) to calibrate a new metallicity-dependentTe(OIII)–Te(OII) relation that provides a better representation of our varied dataset than existing relations from the literature. We also provide an alternativeTe(OIII)–Te(NII) calibration. This newTemethod is then used to obtain accurateZTeestimates and form the mass – metallicity relation (MZR) for a sample of 118 local galaxies.Results.We find that all theTe(OIII)–Te(OII) relations considered here systematically under-estimateZTefor low-ionisation systems by up to 0.6 dex. We determine that this is due to such systems having an intrinsically higher O+abundance than O++abundance, renderingZTeestimates based only on [OIII] lines inaccurate. We therefore provide an empirical correction based on strong emission lines to account for this bias when using our newTe(OIII)–Te(OIII) andTe(OIII)–Te(NII) relations. This allows for accurate metallicities (1σ = 0.08 dex) to be derived for any low-redshift system with an [OIII]λ4363 detection, regardless of its physical size or ionisation state. The MZR formed from our dataset is in very good agreement with those formed from direct measurements of metal recombination lines and blue supergiant absorption lines, in contrast to most otherTe-based and strong-line-based MZRs. Our newTemethod therefore provides an accurate and precise way of obtainingZTefor a large and diverse range of star-forming systems in the local Universe.

Probing Structure in Cold Gas at z ≲ 1 with Gravitationally Lensed Quasar Sight Lines

Abstract Absorption spectroscopy of gravitationally lensed quasars (GLQs) enables study of spatial variations in the interstellar and/or circumgalactic medium of foreground galaxies. We report observations of four GLQs, each with two images separated by 0.″8–3.″0, that show strong absorbers at redshifts 0.4 &lt; z abs &lt; 1.3 in their spectra, including some at the lens redshift with impact parameters 1.5–6.9 kpc. We measure H i Lyman lines along two sight lines each in five absorbers (10 sight lines in total) using Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, and metal lines using Magellan Echellette or Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our data have doubled the lens galaxy sample with measurements of H i column densities (N H i ) and metal abundances along multiple sight lines. Our data, combined with the literature, show no strong correlation between absolute values of differences in N H i , N Fe ii , or [Fe/H] and the sight line separations at the absorber redshifts for separations of 0–8 kpc. The estimated abundance gradients show a tentative anticorrelation with abundances at galaxy centers. Some lens galaxies show inverted gradients, possibly suggesting central dilution by mergers or infall of metal-poor gas. [Fe/H] measurements and masses estimated from GLQ astrometry suggest the lens galaxies lie below the total mass–metallicity relation for early-type galaxies as well as measurements for quasar-galaxy pairs and gravitationally lensed galaxies at comparable redshifts. This difference may arise in part from the dust depletion of Fe. Higher resolution measurements of H and metals (especially undepleted elements) for more GLQ absorbers and accurate lens redshifts are needed to confirm these trends.

The minimum metallicity of globular clusters and its physical origin – implications for the galaxy mass–metallicity relation and observations of proto-globular clusters at high redshift

ABSTRACT In the local Universe, globular clusters (GCs) with metallicities [Fe/H] &amp;lt; −2.5 are extremely rare. In this Letter, the close connection between GC formation and galaxy evolution is used to show that this GC metallicity ‘floor’ results from the galaxy mass–metallicity relation of ultra low-luminosity galaxies (ULLGs) at high redshift, where the most metal-poor GCs must have formed. Galaxies with metallicities [Fe/H] ≲ −2.5 have too low masses to form GCs with initial masses Mi ≳ 105 M⊙ needed to survive for a Hubble time. This translates the galaxy mass–metallicity relation into a maximum initial cluster mass–metallicity relation for [Fe/H] ≲ −1.8, which naturally leads to the observed colour–magnitude relation of metal-poor GCs at z = 0 (the ‘blue tilt’). Its strength traces the slope of the gas phase mass–metallicity relation of ULLGs. Based on the observed blue tilt of GCs in the Virgo and Fornax Clusters, the galaxy mass–metallicity relation is predicted to have a slope of α = 0.4 ± 0.1 for 105 ≲ M⋆/M⊙ ≲ 107 at z ≳ 2. The GC metallicity floor implies a minimum host galaxy mass and a maximum redshift for GC formation. Any proto-GCs that may be detected at z &amp;gt; 9 are most likely to end up in galaxies presently more massive than the Milky Way, whereas GCs in low-mass galaxies such as the Fornax dSph (M⋆ ≈ 4 × 107 M⊙) formed at z ≲ 3.

A Collection of New Dwarf Galaxies in NGC 5128’s Western Halo

Abstract We report the photometric properties of 16 dwarf galaxies, 15 of which are newly identified, in the Western halo of the nearby giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128. All of the candidates are found at projected distances ∼100–225 kpc from their giant host, with luminosities−10.82 ≤ M V /mag ≤ −7.42 and effective radii 4″ ≲ r eff ≲ 17″ (or 75 ≲ r eff/pc ≲ 300 at the distance of NGC 5128). We compare them to other low-mass dwarf galaxies in the local universe and find that they populate the faint/compact extension of the size–luminosity relation that was previously not well-sampled by dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus A system, with optical colors similar to compact stellar systems like globular clusters and ultra-compact dwarf galaxies despite having much more diffuse morphologies. From optical u′g′r′i′z′ photometry, stellar masses are estimated to be , with colors that show them to fall redward of the dwarf galaxy mass–metallicity relation. These colors suggest star formation histories that require some mechanism that would give rise to extra metal enrichment such as primordial formation within the halos of their giant galaxy hosts, non-primordial star formation from previously enriched gas, or extended periods of star formation leading to self-enrichment. We also report the existence of at least two sub-groups of dwarf candidates, each subtending ≲15′ on the sky, corresponding to projected physical separations of 10–20 kpc. True physical associations of these groups, combined with their potentially extended star formation histories, would imply that they may represent dwarf galaxy groups in the early stage of interaction upon infall into a giant elliptical galaxy halo in the very nearby universe.

Modelling the mass-metallicity relation of star-forming galaxies from z ∼ 3.5 to z ∼ 0

We study the origin and cosmic evolution of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) in star-forming galaxies based on a full, numerical chemical evolution model. The model was designed to match the local MZRs for both gas and stars simultaneously. This is achieved by invoking a time-dependent metal enrichment process which assumes either a time-dependent metal outflow with larger metal loading factors in galactic winds at early times, or a time-dependent Initial Mass Function (IMF) with steeper slopes at early times. We compare the predictions from this model with data sets covering redshifts 0<z<3.5. The data suggests a two-phase evolution with a transition point around z ~ 1.5. Before that epoch the MZRgas has been evolving parallel with no evolution in the slope. After z ~ 1.5 the MZRgas started flattening until today. We show that the predictions of both the variable metal outflow and the variable IMF model match these observations very well. Our model also reproduces the evolution of the main sequence, hence the correlation between galaxy mass and star formation rate. We also compare the predicted redshift evolution of the MZRstar with data from the literature. As the latter mostly contains data of massive, quenched early-type galaxies, stellar metallicities at high redshifts tend to be higher in the data than predicted by our model. Data of stellar metallicities of lower-mass (< 10^11 solar mass), star-forming galaxies at high redshift is required to test our model.

Abstract We present a photometric study of the dwarf galaxy population in the core region (≲r vir/4) of the Fornax galaxy cluster based on deep u′g′i′ photometry from the Next Generation Fornax Cluster Survey. All imaging data were obtained with the Dark Energy Camera mounted on the 4 m Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory. We identify 258 dwarf galaxy candidates with luminosities −17 ≲ M g′ ≲ −8 mag, corresponding to typical stellar masses of , reaching ∼3 mag deeper in point-source luminosity and ∼4 mag deeper in surface brightness sensitivity compared to the classic Fornax Cluster Catalog. Morphological analysis shows that the dwarf galaxy surface-brightness profiles are well represented by single-component Sérsic models with average Sérsic indices of and average effective radii of . Color–magnitude relations indicate a flattening of the galaxy red sequence at faint galaxy luminosities, similar to the one recently discovered in the Virgo cluster. A comparison with population synthesis models and the galaxy mass–metallicity relation reveals that the average faint dwarf galaxy is likely older than ∼5 Gyr. We study galaxy scaling relations between stellar mass, effective radius, and stellar mass surface density over a stellar mass range covering six orders of magnitude. We find that over the sampled stellar mass range several distinct mechanisms of galaxy mass assembly can be identified: (1) dwarf galaxies assemble mass inside the half-mass radius up to , (2) isometric mass assembly occurs in the range , and (3) massive galaxies assemble stellar mass predominantly in their halos at and above.

Mass-metallicity relation of dwarf galaxies and its dependency on time: clues from resolved systems and comparison with massive galaxies

We present a new approach to study the mass-metallicity relation and its dependency on time. We used the star formation history (SFH) derived from color-magnitude diagram fitting techniques of a sample of Local Group (LG) dwarfs to obtain stellar masses, metallicities, and star-formation rates (SFR) to analyze the mass-metallicity relation as a function of the ages of their stellar populations. The accurate SFHs allow a time resolution of about 2 Gyr at the oldest ages for a total redshift range of 0<~z<~3. The mass-metallicity relation retrieved for the sample of LG dwarfs was compared with a large dataset of literature data obtained in a wide redshift range. Neither of the two independent datasets shows a clear evolution of the mass-metallicity relation slope with redshift. However, when the star-formation rate is added as an additional parameter in the relation, it shows a dependence on the redshift in the sense that the coefficient of the mass decreases with increasing redshift, while the coefficient for the SFR is almost constant with time. This result suggests an increasing contribution with time of the galaxy stellar mass to the metalliticy of the stars that formed most recently, but it also shows that the SFR can play a fundamental role in shaping the mass-metallicity relation.

Red Supergiants as Cosmic Abundance Probes: Massive Star Clusters in M83 and the Mass–Metallicity Relation of Nearby Galaxies

Abstract We present an abundance analysis of seven super star clusters in the disk of M83. The near-infrared spectra of these clusters are dominated by red supergiants, and the spectral similarity in the J-band of such stars at uniform metallicity means that the integrated light from the clusters may be analyzed using the same tools as those applied to single stars. Using data from VLT/KMOS, we estimate metallicities for each cluster in the sample. We find that the abundance gradient in the inner regions of M83 is flat, with a central metallicity of relative to a solar value of Z ⊙ = 0.014, which is in excellent agreement with the results from an analysis of luminous hot stars in the same regions. Compiling this latest study with our other recent work, we construct a mass–metallicity relation for nearby galaxies based entirely on the analysis of RSGs. We find excellent agreement with the other stellar-based technique—that of blue supergiants—as well as with temperature-sensitive (“auroral” or “direct”) H ii-region studies. Of all the H ii-region strong-line calibrations, those that are empirically calibrated to direct-method studies (N2 and O3N2) provide the most consistent results.

Mass and metallicity scaling relations of high-redshift star-forming galaxies selected by GRBs

We present a comprehensive study of the relations between gas kinematics, metallicity, and stellar mass in a sample of 82 GRB-selected galaxies using absorption and emission methods. We find the velocity widths of both emission and absorption profiles to be a proxy of stellar mass. We also investigate the velocity-metallicity correlation and its evolution with redshift and find the correlation derived from emission lines to have a significantly smaller scatter compared to that found using absorption lines. Using 33 GRB hosts with measured stellar mass and metallicitiy, we study the mass-metallicity relation for GRB host galaxies in a stellar mass range of $10^{8.2} M_{\odot}$ to $10^{11.1} M_{\odot}$ and a redshift range of $ z\sim 0.3-3.4$. The GRB-selected galaxies appear to track the mass-metallicity relation of star forming galaxies but with an offset of 0.15 towards lower metallicities. This offset is comparable with the average error-bar on the metallicity measurements of the GRB sample and also the scatter on the MZ relation of the general population. It is hard to decide whether this relatively small offset is due to systematic effects or the intrinsic nature of GRB hosts. We also investigate the possibility of using absorption-line metallicity measurements of GRB hosts to study the mass-metallicity relation at high redshifts. Our analysis shows that the metallicity measurements from absorption methods can significantly differ from emission metallicities and assuming identical measurements from the two methods may result in erroneous conclusions.
