Pedagogical content knowledge in physical education preservice teachers in view of researching on lesson studies

PurposeResearching on lesson studies in initial training of physical education (PE) teachers in Portugal, our group is especially interested in the potential of this methodology for developing the pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) of future PE teachers. The purpose of the present text is to synthesize the knowledge relating to this subject.Design/methodology/approachExploratory searches in four multiple search databases were carried out, resulting in 51 records. Information about authors, year of publication, purposes, methodology and results was collected and analyzed.FindingsResults highlight the diversity of purposes. The interview is recurrent in the qualitative studies, while the questionnaire is used in all the large quantitative studies. Regarding the findings, it appears the centrality of PCK, its development potential and its measurability, the consistency of the concept and its evolutionary dynamics, as well as the constructive criticism of initial teacher training models and practices.Originality/valueTo emphasize the relationship between lesson studies and the development of PCK in initial teacher training of PE teachers.

Professional Training of Future Teachers of Physical Culture for Animation Leisure Activities

The purpose of the study is to determine the need for professional competencies development for future teachers of physical culture in the field of animation leisure activities, taking into account modern educational requirements and trends. The research methodology for preparing future teachers of physical education for animation leisure activities includes several key methods and approaches. One of the main methods is the analysis of scientific literature, including the study of existing research papers, articles, and monographs related to the professional training of future teachers of physical education for animation activities. To achieve the research objectives, it is necessary to define and analyze the concepts “professional training”, “animation leisure activities”, “competence”, and other important terms. This methodology allows a comprehensive study of the process of preparing future physical education teachers for animation leisure activities. Results. It has been found that animation leisure activities play a significant role in the professional training of future physical education teachers, as they contribute to the development of professional competencies, creativity, and communication skills. This concept encompasses various activities and actions that help students not only master the methods of organizing leisure activities but also develop the ability to engage others in an active and healthy lifestyle. Conclusions. Animation as an educational component can make a school lesson more engaging through various methods, forms, and means. Animation can be fully applied as a creative learning activity that develops learners’ potential while also encouraging them to challenge current social issues. Animation is viewed not only within the context of leisure but also as an opportunity to be applied in the educational practice of modern education.

Informatization of the professional training of future teachers of physical education in the conditions of distance education

The article shows the importance of the use of new information technologies in the process of professional training of future teachers of physical education at the current stage of the development of society in the conditions of distance learning. The main directions and tasks regarding the use of info-communication and multimedia learning tools in the professional training of students from the specialty 014 Secondary education are defined. (physical culture). The educational component "sports-pedagogical informatics" was introduced into the educational process, the curriculum and diagnostic technology for assessing success according to the modular rating system for this course were developed. It has been established that the implementation of such innovative tasks in full will make it possible to significantly optimize the professional training of future specialists in the conditions of distance learning and to quickly integrate into the European educational space. In addition, the main stages of the introduction of computer and multimedia tools into the educational process of future teachers of physical culture are determined. The justified need to introduce the educational component "Sports and pedagogical informatics" into the educational process of students from the specialty 014 Secondary education (physical culture). Carrying out such innovative tasks in full will make it possible to significantly optimize the professional training of students in the specialty 014 Secondary education (physical education) in the conditions of distance learning.

Mapping Physical Literacy in Czech Future Physical Education Teachers – a Time Trend Study

Abstract To facilitate the dissemination of physical literacy (PL), prioritizing its integration in the education of future physical education (PE) teachers is imperative. This study focuses on assessing the PL levels of university students enrolled in PE programs who have participated in a dedicated workshop on PL to understand its significance and its attributes. Utilizing the Czech version of the PLAYself questionnaire administered in a pencil-and-paper format, data were collected from 350 participants between 2017 and 2023, excluding the year 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Analysis revealed varying levels of confidence among students regarding physical activity (PA) across different environments, with outdoor activities garnering the highest confidence (71.5%) and activities on ice demonstrating the lowest (52.9%). While most students recognize the importance of being physically active for their health and well-being (96%), there exists a conscious acknowledgement of the necessity to refine movement skills, despite innate abilities (74.7%). Interestingly, students exhibit lower confidence levels within group settings, with only 32.8% perceiving themselves as the most proficient in PA among peers. Furthermore, the perceived importance of PL surpasses that of literacy and numeracy, particularly within family, school, and peer contexts. A minority of students (13.7%) feel inadequately physically fit to engage in desired PAs. These findings underscore the significance of bolstering students’ confidence in PA participation, as it correlates positively with their future academic performance. This study emphasizes the pivotal role of education in fostering a culture of PL among future educators and their influence on shaping the PL of subsequent generations.

Impact of goal orientation on moral competence development in youth

The study had two aims. The first was to investigate correlation between specific types of goal orientation as a predictor of prosocial and antisocial functioning and level of moral competences. The second, was to verify whether goal orientation has an impact on the development of moral competences of students participating in a pedagogical intervention based on non-linear pedagogy. Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire and Moral Competence Test were used to assess 468 secondary school students aged 15 in goal orientation and moral competences level. There was no correlation between the level of task and ego orientation and the level of moral competence. Under the influence of pedagogical experiment students with high level of task orientation achieved a statistically significantly higher change in the level of moral competences (η2 = 0.04). Study suggests that high level of task orientation is more susceptible to the development of moral competencies. Also, employing a non-linear pedagogy model in physical education, provides a conducive environment for the development of moral competences and should be implemented in the training of future physical education teachers.

Characteristics of health-preserving competence of future physical education teachers in the structure of professional training

This article presents the results of a sociological study aimed at assessing health-preserving competence and its role in the professional training of future physical education teachers. The goal of the research is to characterize the health-preserving competence of future physical education teachers within the structure of professional training during wartime and postwar conditions. Research methods include theoretical analysis of scientific and methodological literature, sociological research, pedagogical research methods (observation), and mathematical analysis methods. The study involved 53 students from the first to fourth years of the specialty 014.11 Secondary Education. Physical Culture at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University. Students' self-assessment of their level of health- preserving competence was divided into four levels: high, sufficient, average, and low. Only 7.4% of respondents rated their level as high, while the majority rated it as sufficient or average. The research identified the main reasons leading to low or average self- assessment of professional culture: insufficient number of practical classes (27.8%), lack of independent work (20.4%), insufficient theoretical knowledge (14.8%), and low level of motivation and interest (14.8%). Key aspects of health-preserving competence for future physical education teachers were determined. Despite the significant attention of higher education institutions to the formation of health-preserving competence, only 51.9% of students regularly implement components of a healthy lifestyle. The most effective means of forming health-preserving competence were identified as the integration of relevant aspects into the curriculum, conducting master classes, practical exercises, and organizing sports events. The study emphasizes the need to improve educational programs to enhance the level of health-preserving competence, which includes increasing the number of practical classes, stimulating students' independent work, and strengthening their motivation to actively apply the acquired knowledge in everyday life and professional activities.

The Impact of Role Models and Experiences on Physical Education Teacher Education Students’ Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge

Preparing future physical education teachers to effectively integrate technology is a responsibility of physical education teacher education (PETE) programs. The purpose of this study was to examine 124 PETE students’ Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) levels, role models for TPACK, and first-hand experi-ences with TPACK. Participants completed the Survey of Preservice Physical Education Teachers’ Knowledge of Teaching and Technology. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and stepwise regression were used to determine TPACK levels, differences among participants, and predictors of TPACK. Results indicated that PETE students had high levels of TPACK (M=4.0, SD = .76) and that PETE faculty modeling was the most significant predictor of TPACK. TPACK was observed and experienced mostly with video analysis/demonstrations and activ-ity monitoring.

Physical Education Teacher in Middle Schools: Requirements and Academic Profile

This study aimed to discuss the academic profiles and requirements of physical education teachers at middle schools. Therefore 102 physical education teachers (Mage= 44) from Uzbekistan participated in this study. The literature review method was used to find potential research papers. A special self-report interview was used to determine the professional needs of physical education teachers working at middle schools. The results of the interviews were used to determine the indicators of the professional profiles of the physical education teachers. The results showed that physical education teachers should meet several professional requirements. Also, revealed five main requirements, namely, psychological and pedagogical requirements, personal and professional requirements, teaching (or methodological) requirements, communicative and organizational requirements, and scientific-educational requirements. The research results can be applied to the future training of physical education teachers, the development of teacher education programs, and the organization of an effective educational process in schools. Future physical education teachers can use the results of this study to envision professional requirements, skills, and experiences.

Prospects for the implementation of the variable module "floorball" in the physical education curriculum for 14-16-year-old boys

The article deals with issues related to the development of floorball in general secondary education institutions. The presence of so-called variable modules within the current curriculum allows to vary to some extent the content of the educational material on physical culture in the direction of including the means of those types of sports and motor activity, which, on the one hand, are interesting and accessible to modern schoolchildren and, on the other hand, positively affect the level of their health and development. The purpose of the study is to determine the attitude of physical education teachers to the introduction of the "Floorball" module as a variable component of the physical education curriculum for 14-16-year-old boys. The research concept is based on the methodological, theoretical and scientific-methodical levels of the basic provisions of pedagogy and the theory and methodology of physical education. The research was carried out at Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University and general secondary education institutions of Zhytomyr region in 2023-2024 in which 42 students - future physical education teachers - and 137 physical education teachers participated. Research methods: analysis of literary sources, observations, interviews, questionnaires, methods of mathematical statistics. Floorball is a team game sport and represents hockey in a sports hall. Simple equipment for the player, relatively inexpensive sports equipment made of plastic materials which makes it light and reduces the risk of injury, simple rules of the game and the ability to train on any flat surface. Floorball as a means of physical education attracts the attention of students with its high emotionality, spectacle, variety of manifestations of physical qualities, many different game combinations, quick transition from actions in attack to defense and ensures the preparation of student youth for active life activities and a healthy way of life. It was established that only 19.1% of the students have the skills and abilities to play floorball during a physical education lesson, and 71.4%, 66.1% and 63.0% of teachers with different work experience, respectively. The biggest obstacle to the introduction of floorball in lessons and extracurriculars in general secondary education institutions is the lack of sports grounds, the necessary equipment and the appropriate professional training of physical education teachers.

PREPARATION OF FUTURE TEACHERS OF PHYSICAL CULTURE FOR THE ORGANIZATION OF COMPETITIVE ACTIVITIES OF SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM SPORTS GAMES

The article analyzes the state of training of future teachers of physical culture in general and the organization of competitive activities of schoolchildren in sports games in various higher education institutions in the process of studying professional disciplines aimed at mastering the necessary skills in the plane of both psychological and pedagogical and special / professional training.The author found out that the conditions of the modern school determine the need for professional training of future physical culture teachers of a new profile. A certain level of developed qualities is necessary, such as: social and professional mobility, professional activity and stability, responsibility, creativity, sociability, balance, etc. Cultivating these qualities will contribute to the universalization of the professional functions of the future specialist. However, as evidenced by the analysis of modern practice, there are a number of gaps in the system of training future teachers in general and training future physical culture teachers in particular.On the basis of theoretical generalizations, the research found out that in order to successfully organize competitive activities, future teachers of physical culture need to master the following necessary skills: accurately define specific goals and tasks; properly plan preparation for the competition; apply rational and effective forms of their implementation; eliminate negative factors. Therefore, the task of the research was to study the state of preparation of future teachers of physical education for the organization of competitive sports activities of schoolchildren according to all the specified components. In order to generalize the state and practice of training future teachers of physical culture, we analyzed the relevant educational programs of «Bachelor’s», «Master’s» programs implemented in various higher education institutions of Ukraine.The author found out that the problem of professional training of future teachers of physical education for the organization of competitive activities of schoolchildren in sports games requires a thorough solution in terms of methodological, psychological-pedagogical and methodical aspects.

State of professional readiness of the future physical education teachers

The current state of training of students of the faculties of physical education and sports requires modernization and improvement of the training process of future physical education teachers in secondary schools. The problem of forming the professional readiness of teachers is currently in the center of attention of the Ukrainian education sphere. Professional training of physical education teachers must meet the requirements of the methodology of modern science; organically fit into the general theory of the culture of the individual and society; to enable students to identify and solve philosophical, cultural, sociological, psychological and pedagogical problems. The purpose of the work is to determine the professional readiness of future physical education teachers to work in a secondary school. The research methodology is based on the theoretical and scientific-methodical levels of the main provisions of pedagogy and psychology, theory and methodology of physical education and professional education, laws and principles of the educational process in the field of physical culture and sports. Scientific methods were used in the research: analysis of literary sources, pedagogical observation, interview, questionnaire, assessment of professional readiness. The research was conducted at Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University in 2021–2023, in which students of the third and fourth years (84 persons) of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports took part. Scientific novelty. The acquired professional knowledge, skills and abilities at the level of the latest achievements of psychological-pedagogical, anatomical-physiological disciplines and a high level of physical and methodical preparation in the field of physical culture and sports are the basis of the successful activity of the future physical education teacher. Conclusions. It was established that 17.6% of third-year students had a high level of professional readiness, 50.9% had an average level and 31.5% had a low level. The fourth-year students showed better knowledge, abilities and skills, their professional training, and accordingly, their professional competences are higher: 23.8% have a high level of professional training, 51.8% - average, and only 24.4% - low.

Health-preserving competence of future physical education teacher: terminological narrative in contemporary context

This article presents the results of a scientific study aimed at exploring theoretical narratives of health-preserving competence among future physical education teachers, as discussed in Ukrainian scientific research. The work marks the beginning of research in this direction, focusing on determining the possibilities of preparing future physical education teachers in higher education institutions to ensure the health preservation of students. Emphasis is placed on the importance of developing health-preserving competence as a key element among the professional competencies of future educators. The study highlights that current realities, such as the deterioration of children's health and prolonged stress due to war, make health preservation a necessary function not only for physical education teachers but also for all professionals working with children. The research indicates that the essence of health-preserving competence requires consideration through the prism of its component structure, which may be viewed differently by various scientific schools and researchers. Several approaches to understanding the structure of health-preserving competence are described, including its context in interacting with social, physical, and spiritual health, as well as different perspectives on its integrative nature and interaction with environmental conservation and self-realization. The authors stress the importance of clarifying the terms "competence" and its relation to "competency." The study also highlights a procedural approach to understanding competence based on the components of activity and associated with the formation of motivational-volitional, cognitive-value, practical- effective, and reflexive-adaptive components by future educators. As a result, two layers of competence are identified: external, which considers the integration of health preservation elements into the teacher's practical activities, and internal, reflecting the reconsideration of health values at the personal and professional levels.

The structure of methodical competence of a physical education teacher

The article reveals the theoretical foundations of the development of methodological competence of future physical education teachers during their studies at higher education institutions. The essence and structure of the concept of ”methodical competence of a physical education teacher” was identified as one of the factors of proficiency which provides the teacher with knowledge, abilities and skills of organizing physical education and health activities, health methods and technologies for providing students with motor activity, skills and conducting the educational process on the subject “Physical education”. The purpose of the article is to study the structure of the methodical competence of the physical education teacher and to establish the components that must be developed during the training of students. The analysis of scientific and methodical literature shows a large number of different approaches to determining the structure of a teacher's methodical competence. We have identified the following structural components of the physical education teacher's methodological competence: motivational-targeted, organizational-contentual, procedural-active, reflective-creative. To ensure the development of each of the components of the methodological competence of the future physical education teacher, it is necessary to: 1) to create scientifically based planning of the educational process consisting of mandatory and optional educational components at the higher education institution; 2) to ensure unity and interconnection of theoretical, methodical and practical training of students; 3) to create a high but accessible level of difficulty in training classes, quick and high- quality mastery of the technique of performing exercises and mastering the method of their improvement; 4) to create maximum activity and independence of the students during classes; 5) to combine individual and collective physical culture and health activities of the students; 6) ensure the educational process with a sufficient quantity and quality of technical and sports equipment; 7) to ensure wide use of innovative technologies of physical culture, health and sports activities. The methodical competence of a physical education teacher depends on his professional preparation while studying at a higher education institution, namely: methodical, professional-pedagogical, psychological-pedagogical knowledge as well as knowledge in the fields of physical culture, health and sports, abilities and skills, motivational and valuable attitude towards his profession. The uniqueness of the methodical competence of a physical education teacher is determined by the specifics of solving training, educational and health-improving tasks regarding the formation of physical, psychological, spiritual and social health of student youth.

Managerial activity of future physical education teachers aimed at building a positive image using visual technologies

With the integration of technology and social media in education, there is increasing interest in innovative approaches to enhance managerial skills among prospective physical education and sports teachers. The integration of technology and social media into education has prompted interest in exploring innovative methods to enhance the managerial skills of prospective physical education and sports teachers. This study investigates the impact of an intervention on the managerial skills of fourth-year students majoring in Physical Culture and Sports across three educational institutions in Kazakhstan. Out of 564 participants, 355 were eligible for analysis: 167 used chatbots and 188 followed conventional classroom methods. The intervention included a 4-week team management course starting in January 2022. Chatbot users accessed various materials such as short lecture videos, stories, assignments, infographics, and audio sequences, while conventional learners attended standard lectures and practical sessions. Following the course, participants undertook a 12-week teaching practice, with chatbot users also maintaining an active Twitter presence to build a positive image as future physical education teachers. Managerial skills were assessed using a 44-item questionnaire, covering Conceptual, Human, and Technical skills. Additionally, social media popularity was measured based on Twitter activity. Results showed that both groups significantly improved their Conceptual, Human, and Technical skills after the course. Chatbot users demonstrated greater improvement in Technical skills (p = 0.003, d = 1.139), while conventional learners showed stronger Human skills (p = 0.021, d = 1.32). Specifically, the mean score for Technical skills increased from 2.71 to 3.76 for chatbot users and from 2.65 to 3.20 for conventional learners. Moreover, chatbot-aided learners further enhanced their Conceptual and Human skills through social media engagement. Correlation analysis indicated a close relationship between managerial skills and social media popularity. These findings have significant practical implications for the education and development of prospective physical education and sports teachers. Integrating chatbots and social media into educational settings offers innovative approaches to enhancing managerial skills.

Directions of modernization of professional training of future specialists in physical culture and sports in conditions of martial law

The professional training of future specialists in physical education and sports in institutions of higher education (hereinafter referred to as higher education institutions) in the conditions of martial law is an urgent problem today. Despite the large number of works devoted to the study of various aspects of the training of future specialists, it is worth stating that the study of the professional training of future specialists in physical culture and sports in the conditions of martial law requires special attention of scientists and practitioners.
 The purpose of the work: revealing the peculiarities of the professional training of future specialists in physical culture and sports in the conditions of martial law, highlighting the main directions of modernization of this process.
 Research has proven that modern requirements for physical culture and sports specialists are significantly different from those that existed a few years ago. Curricula as well as work programs for educational disciplines need to be updated in the aspect of increased attention to modern health systems, various innovative forms of physical activity, in particular, national-patriotic sports and folk games among schoolchildren and students.
 The article reveals the conceptual apparatus of the researched topic, the structure and content of the professional training of future specialists in physical culture and sports, identifies and characterizes the directions of its modernization. It has been established that the process of training future specialists in physical culture and sports under martial law needs not only renewal, but also modernization. The areas of modernization of the professional training of future teachers of physical education are highlighted and characterized: conducting effective career orientation work; update of educational and methodical literature on educational disciplines for higher education applicants in specialty 017 Physical culture and sport; introduction of innovative forms and methods of education into the educational process.

Pedagogical activity as the basis of pedagogical mastery of a physical culture teacher

The article examines the peculiarities of pedagogical activity as a component of the pedagogical skills of future teachers of physical education. The concept of "pedagogical activity", which is understood as a type of activity expressed in procedural and effective aspects, is analyzed. Pedagogical activity is the professional activity of a teacher, in which the tasks of teaching and upbringing are realized with the help of various means of influencing students, it is also noted that pedagogical activity does not begin with setting goals, but with the analysis of the pedagogical situation, which already creates conditions for activity. The pedagogical activity of a physical education teacher is very variable, as are the teaching conditions (gym, street, office). It is noted that the pedagogical activity of a physical culture teacher is reduced not only to the process of imparting knowledge to students, the formation of their motor abilities and skills, and the education of physical qualities, an analysis of the educational and practical activity of students is carried out, an assessment of its effectiveness is made, appropriate corrections are made, that is, current control is carried out. The main directions of the pedagogical activity of the physical culture teacher are indicated, including: diagnostic  identification of the individual qualities of the student; indicative-prognostic teacher's ability to determine goals, purpose, content; constructive-projective involves planning, selection of means, methods of influencing the student; organizational and activity manifested in the organization of various forms of physical education, establishing contacts with schoolchildren, adult environment; communicative - the ability to communicate, establish contacts; analytical-evaluative consists in the analysis of both one's own actions and the actions of pupils; research-creative elucidation of individual and mental characteristics of pupils. It is noted that the pedagogical activity of a physical culture teacher should be aimed at solving the tasks of physical education, which in turn is an important means of physical, social and spiritual development of an individual. It is indicated that the pedagogical activity of a physical culture teacher is a complex, multidimensional and highly dynamic process that takes place in constantly changing conditions, taking into account the age and individual characteristics of children and the teacher's personality.

Training of future physical education teachers to physical culture and health activities in the secondary school

The article examines the actual problems of training of future physical education teacher for physical culture and health activities in a secondary school. The process of preparing students of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports for the organization of a physical culture and health environment at school has been revealed. The components of physical culture and health activities and the level of training of students for this type of activity are established. It has been proven that the issues of physical culture and health activities in Ukrainian schools are quite relevant for improving physical fitness, harmonious development and recovery of students. The purpose of the work is to establish the level of readiness of future physical education teacher for physical culture and health activities in a secondary school. The research methodology was to reveal the current state of solving the problem of training future physical education teachers for physical culture and health activities in a secondary school using analytical investigation methods and problem-based research methods. The following scientific methods were used in the study: analysis of literary sources, pedagogical observation, conversation, questionnaires, expert assessment and self-assessment of the level of knowledge, skills and abilities in physical culture and health activities, methods of mathematical statistics. The research was carried out at Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University in 2021–2023, in which students of the third and fourth years (84 persons) of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports took part, who are studying under the educational and professional bachelor's program in the field of knowledge 01 Education/Pedagogy, specialty 014, Secondary education in subject specialty 014.11 Secondary education (Physical culture). The scientific novelty consists in the disclosure of the dynamics of the formation of physical culture and health readiness of students of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports for professional activities at school. Third-year students have a low level of readiness for physical education and health activities at school (61.1–65.1 points). The students of the fourth course showed good grades (73.2–76.9 points) in all components of readiness for physical culture and health activities. Conclusions. The preparation of future physical education teacher for physical culture and health activities at school can be presented as a system of organizational, psychological and pedagogical measures of a higher education institution aimed at acquiring knowledge, abilities and skills in health preservation and experience of implementing various forms of physical culture.

Methodical mastery of students of physical education faculties as future specialists in the field of teaching gymnastics

The article highlights the theoretical foundations of training future physical education teachers in gymnastics and its teaching methods, defines and substantiates the mastery indicators of this type of activity. At the present time, this problem is also due to the fact that at the current stage of development of the institution of general secondary education, the level of requirements for the professional training of future physical education teachers has significantly increased. The purpose of this work is the theoretical and methodological substantiation, the characteristics of indicators of methodical mastery of future teachers of physical culture in relation to the organization and conduct of gymnastics classes in general secondary education institutions. The analysis of scientific research shows that the training of a physical education teacher requires, first of all, professionally significant knowledge, abilities and skills, as well as the coordination of special personality qualities, namely: proper attitude to professional activity; development of methodical thinking of future teachers of physical education; the ability to work in a team and independently; availability of communication skills; effectively apply acquired knowledge, skills and abilities in professional activities, etc.
 The peculiarities and specifics of educational forms of gymnastics classes in higher education are substantiated for the effective formation of professional skills and skills for conducting various forms of gymnastics classes; mastering practical material and developing the skills of its optimal selection for organizing and conducting gymnastics classes; increasing the level of development of basic motor skills; realization of creative possibilities of students in modeling future professional activity.
