Furuncular Myiasis Caused by Wohlfahrtia vigil (Walker)

Furuncular lesions in infants may, on rare occasions, be caused by penetration or scarification of the skin by larvae of the sarcophagid fly<i>Wohlfahrtia vigil</i>. The present case is considered worthy to record because of two unique features—the involvement of the youngest infant reported to date, and, to our knowledge, the report of the first case in Nebraska. <h3>Report of a Case</h3> The patient was a male infant born on June 10, 1979, and discharged from the hospital in his home community of Kearney, Neb, three days after birth. He appeared normal in every respect, and his neonatal course in the hospital was unremarkable. On the night of his fourth day of age, the mother noted a lesion on his right side, which was thought to be an insect bite. DISEASE produced by infestation by larvae of the order diptera is termed myiasis.1 The clinical features and epidemiologic factors in eight cases of furuncular myiasis occurring in metropolitan San Antonio, Texas, between August and October, 1972, are included in this report. Selected clinical data are presented in Table 1. The lesions appeared as one to five ulcers surrounded by nontender induration. In seven patients the lesion was located in the superior occipital region, and in one, in the left posterior parietal region. Motile larvae were readily visible. Furuncular Dermal Myiasis From Dermatobia hominis

To the Editor:— Dermal or cutaneous myiasis is caused by invasion of the skin by larvae of flies of several genera which are commonly known as bot, warble, and screwworm flies. The usual hosts are livestock and various domestic animals. Dermal myiasis has been reported in many parts of the world, including the United States. Furuncular dermal myiasis is caused by species of Hypoderma and Wohlfahrtia and by Dermatobia hominis . The larva penetrates the skin through a hair follicle and forms a furuncle at or near the site of penetration. Hypoderma migrates extensively within the body first. Cases in the United States have been caused by species of Wohlfahrtia , particularly in children (J. R. Cases of furuncular myiasis in humans have been reported in the literature from time to time, many of them having been attributed to parasitism by sarcophagid flies. O'Rourke (10) described a case of furuncular myiasis due toWohlfahrtia vigil(Walk.) in a month-old infant at Ottawa. He reviewed the life-history and distribution of the species and previous records of myiasis cawed by it. Israels and Shuman (4) published an informative general review of myiasis dermatosa. Hunt and Edwards (3) reported a case in a three-month-old infanr at Montreal. This is a report on similar cases that occurred at Lethbridge, Alberta, in 1953 and in 1955 and a review of other records for Western Canada and the United States.
