Evaluating the Impact of the Tamm-Dancoff Approximation on X-ray Spectrum Calculations.

The impact of the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) for time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations of X-ray absorption and X-ray emission spectra (XAS and XES) is investigated, showing small discrepancies in the excitation energies and intensities. Through explicit diagonalization of the TDDFT Hessian, XES was considered by using full TDDFT with a core-hole reference state. This has previously not been possible with most TDDFT implementations as a result of the presence of negative eigenvalues. Furthermore, a core-valence separation (CVS) scheme for XES is presented, in which only elements including the core-hole are considered, resulting in a small Hessian with the dimension of the number of remaining occupied orbitals of the same spin as the core-hole (CH). The resulting spectra are in surprisingly good agreement with the full-space counterpart, illustrating the weak coupling between the valence-valence and valence-CH transitions. Complications resulting from contributions from the discretized continuum are discussed, which can occur for TDDFT calculations of XAS and XES and for TDA calculations of XAS. In conclusion, we recommend that TDA be used when calculating X-ray emission spectra, and either CVS-TDA or CVS-TDDFT can be used for X-ray absorption spectra.

Quantum surface effects in the electromagnetic coupling between a quantum emitter and a plasmonic nanoantenna: time-dependent density functional theory vs. semiclassical Feibelman approach.

We use time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) within the jellium model to study the impact of quantum-mechanical effects on the self-interaction Green's function that governs the electromagnetic interaction between quantum emitters and plasmonic metallic nanoantennas. A semiclassical model based on the Feibelman parameters, which incorporates quantum surface-response corrections into an otherwise classical description, confirms surface-enabled Landau damping and the spill out of the induced charges as the dominant quantum mechanisms strongly affecting the nanoantenna-emitter interaction. These quantum effects produce a redshift and broadening of plasmonic resonances not present in classical theories that consider a local dielectric response of the metals. We show that the Feibelman approach correctly reproduces the nonlocal surface response obtained by full quantum TDDFT calculations for most nanoantenna-emitter configurations. However, when the emitter is located in very close proximity to the nanoantenna surface, we show that the standard Feibelman approach fails, requiring an implementation that explicitly accounts for the nonlocality of the surface response in the direction parallel to the surface. Our study thus provides a fundamental description of the electromagnetic coupling between plasmonic nanoantennas and quantum emitters at the nanoscale.

An efficient hybrid scheme for time dependent density functional theory.

A hybrid approach able to perform Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) simulations with the same accuracy as that of hybrid exchange-correlation (xc-) functionals but at a fraction of the computational cost is developed, implemented, and validated. The scheme, which we name Hybrid Diagonal Approximation (HDA), consists in employing in the response function a hybrid xc-functional (containing a fraction of the non-local Hartree-Fock exchange) only for the diagonal elements of the omega matrix, while the adiabatic local density approximation is employed for the off-diagonal terms. HDA is especially (but not exclusively) advantageous when using Slater type orbital basis sets and allows one to employ them in a uniquely efficient way, as we demonstrate here by implementing HDA in a local version of the Amsterdam Density Functional code. The new protocol is tested on NH3, C6H6, and the [Au25(SCH3)18]- cluster as prototypical cases ranging from small molecules to ligand-protected metal clusters, finding excellent agreement with respect to both full kernel TDDFT simulations and experimental data. Additionally, a specific comparison test between full kernel and HDA is considered at the Casida level on seven other molecular species, which further confirm the accuracy of the approach for all investigated systems. For the [Au25(SCH3)18]- cluster, a speedup by a factor of seven is obtained with respect to the full kernel. The HDA, therefore, promises to provide a quantitative description of the optical properties of medium-sized systems (nanoclusters) at an affordable cost, thanks to its computational efficiency, especially in combination with a complex polarization algorithm version of TDDFT.

1D Quantum Simulations of Electron Rescattering with Metallic Nanoblades

Electron rescattering has been well studied and simulated for cases with ponderomotive energies of the quasi-free electrons, derived from laser–gas and laser–surface interactions, lower than 50 eV. However, with advents in longer wavelengths and laser field enhancement metallic surfaces, previous simulations no longer suffice to describe more recent strong field and high yield experiments. We present a brief introduction to and some of the theoretical and empirical background of electron rescattering emissions from a metal. We set upon using the Jellium potential with a shielded atomic surface potential to model the metal. We then explore how the electron energy spectra are obtained in the quantum simulation, which is performed using a custom computationally intensive time-dependent Schrödinger equation solver via the Crank–Nicolson method. Finally, we discuss the results of the simulation and examine the effects of the incident laser’s wavelength, peak electric field strength, and field penetration on electron spectra and yields. Future simulations will investigate a more accurate density functional theory metallic model with a system of several non-interacting electrons. Eventually, we will move to a full time-dependent density functional theory approach.

Surface Hopping within an Exciton Picture. An Electrostatic Embedding Scheme.

We report the development and the implementation of an exciton approach that allows ab initio nonadiabatic dynamics simulations of electronic excitation energy transfer in multichromophoric systems. For the dynamics, a trajectory-based strategy is used within the surface hopping formulation. The approach features a consistent hybrid formulation that allows the construction of potential energy surfaces and gradients by combining quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics within an electrostatic embedding scheme. As an application, the study of a molecular dyad consisting of a covalently bound BODIPY moiety and a tetrathiophene group is presented using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The results obtained with the exciton model are compared to previously performed full TDDFT dynamics of the same system. Our results show excellent agreement with the full TDDFT results, indicating that the couplings that lead to excitation energy transfer (EET) are dominated by Coulomb interaction terms and that charge-transfer states are not necessary to properly describe the nonadiabatic dynamics of the system. The exciton model also reveals ultrafast coherent oscillations of the excitation between the two units in the dyad, which occur during the first 50 fs.

Assessment of Ab Initio and Density Functional Theory Methods for the Excitations of Donor-Acceptor Complexes: The Case of the Benzene-Tetracyanoethylene Model.

The understanding of the excited-state properties of electron donors, acceptors and their interfaces in organic optoelectronic devices is a fundamental issue for their performance optimization. In order to obtain a balanced description of the different excitation types for electron-donor-acceptor systems, including the singlet charge transfer (CT), local excitations, and triplet excited states, several ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) methods for excited-state calculations were evaluated based upon the selected model system of benzene-tetracyanoethylene (B-TCNE) complexes. On the basis of benchmark calculations of the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster with single and double excitations method, the arithmetic mean of the absolute errors and standard errors of the electronic excitation energies for the different computational methods suggest that the M11 functional in DFT is superior to the other tested DFT functionals, and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) with the Tamm–Dancoff approximation improves the accuracy of the calculated excitation energies relative to that of the full TDDFT. The performance of the M11 functional underlines the importance of kinetic energy density, spin-density gradient, and range separation in the development of novel DFT functionals. According to the TDDFT results, the performances of the different TDDFT methods on the CT properties of the B-TCNE complexes were also analyzed.

Dissecting the accountability of parameterized and parameter-free single-hybrid and double-hybrid functionals for photophysical properties of TADF-based OLEDs.

Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters are an attractive category of materials that have witnessed a booming development in recent years. In the present contribution, we scrutinize the accountability of parameterized and parameter-free single-hybrid (SH) and double-hybrid (DH) functionals through the two formalisms, full time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA), for the estimation of photophysical properties like absorption energy, emission energy, zero-zero transition energy, and singlet-triplet energy splitting of TADF molecules. According to our detailed analyses on the performance of SHs based on TD-DFT and TDA, the TDA-based parameter-free SH functionals, PBE0 and TPSS0, with one-third of exact-like exchange turned out to be the best performers in comparison to other functionals from various rungs to reproduce the experimental data of the benchmarked set. Such affordable SH approximations can thus be employed to predict and design the TADF molecules with low singlet-triplet energy gaps for OLED applications. From another perspective, considering this point that both the nonlocal exchange and correlation are essential for a more reliable description of large charge-transfer excited states, applicability of the functionals incorporating these terms, namely, parameterized and parameter-free DHs, has also been evaluated. Perusing the role of exact-like exchange, perturbative-like correlation, solvent effects, and other related factors, we find that the parameterized functionals B2π-PLYP and B2GP-PLYP and the parameter-free models PBE-CIDH and PBE-QIDH have respectable performance with respect to others. Lastly, besides the recommendation of reliable computational protocols for the purpose, hopefully this study can pave the way toward further developments of other SHs and DHs for theoretical explorations in the field of OLEDs technology.

Linear-scaling time-dependent density-functional theory beyond the Tamm-Dancoff approximation: Obtaining efficiency and accuracy with in situ optimised local orbitals.

We present a solution of the full time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) eigenvalue equation in the linear response formalism exhibiting a linear-scaling computational complexity with system size, without relying on the simplifying Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA). The implementation relies on representing the occupied and unoccupied subspaces with two different sets of in situ optimised localised functions, yielding a very compact and efficient representation of the transition density matrix of the excitation with the accuracy associated with a systematic basis set. The TDDFT eigenvalue equation is solved using a preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm that is very memory-efficient. The algorithm is validated on a small test molecule and a good agreement with results obtained from standard quantum chemistry packages is found, with the preconditioner yielding a significant improvement in convergence rates. The method developed in this work is then used to reproduce experimental results of the absorption spectrum of bacteriochlorophyll in an organic solvent, where it is demonstrated that the TDA fails to reproduce the main features of the low energy spectrum, while the full TDDFT equation yields results in good qualitative agreement with experimental data. Furthermore, the need for explicitly including parts of the solvent into the TDDFT calculations is highlighted, making the treatment of large system sizes necessary that are well within reach of the capabilities of the algorithm introduced here. Finally, the linear-scaling properties of the algorithm are demonstrated by computing the lowest excitation energy of bacteriochlorophyll in solution. The largest systems considered in this work are of the same order of magnitude as a variety of widely studied pigment-protein complexes, opening up the possibility of studying their properties without having to resort to any semiclassical approximations to parts of the protein environment.

Two-component hybrid time-dependent density functional theory within the Tamm-Dancoff approximation.

We report the implementation of a two-component variant of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) for hybrid functionals that accounts for spin-orbit effects within the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) for closed-shell systems. The influence of the admixture of Hartree-Fock exchange on excitation energies is investigated for several atoms and diatomic molecules by comparison to numbers for pure density functionals obtained previously [M. Kühn and F. Weigend, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 9, 5341 (2013)]. It is further related to changes upon switching to the local density approximation or using the full TDDFT formalism instead of TDA. Efficiency is demonstrated for a comparably large system, Ir(ppy)3 (61 atoms, 1501 basis functions, lowest 10 excited states), which is a prototype molecule for organic light-emitting diodes, due to its "spin-forbidden" triplet-singlet transition.

Performance of Tamm-Dancoff approximation on nonadiabatic couplings by time-dependent density functional theory

The Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA), widely used in physics to decouple excitations and de-excitations, is well known to be good for the calculation of excitation energies but not for oscillator strengths. In particular, the sum rule is violated in the latter case. The same concern arises within the TDA in the calculation of nonadiabatic couplings (NACs) by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), due to the similarities in the TDDFT formulations of NACs and oscillator strengths [C. Hu, H. Hirai, and O. Sugino, J. Chem. Phys. 127, 064103 (2007)]. In this study, we present a systematic evaluation of the performance of TDDFT/TDA for the calculation of NACs. In the cases we considered, including a variety of systems possessing Jahn-Teller and Renner-Teller intersections, as well as an example with accidental conical intersections, it is found that the TDDFT/TDA performs better than the full TDDFT, contrary to the conjecture that the TDA might cause the NAC results to deteriorate and violate the sum rule. The surprisingly good performance of the TDA for NACs is probably because the TDA can partially compensate for the local-density-approximation error and give better excitation energies in the vicinity of intersections of potential energy surfaces. Our study also shows that it is important to use the TDA based on the rigorous full-TDDFT formulation of NACs, instead of using it based on an alternative approximate formulation.

Is the Tamm-Dancoff Approximation Reliable for the Calculation of Absorption and Fluorescence Band Shapes?

The reliability of the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) for predicting vibrationally resolved absorption and emission spectra of several prototypical conjugated molecules has been addressed by performing a series of extensive theoretical calculations. To this end, we have systematically compared the TDA results with the full Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT), the Random Phase Approximation (RPA), as well as the Configuration Interaction Singles (CIS) methods that are routinely employed for the prediction of optical spectra of large molecules. Comparisons have been made with experimental results for both the band shapes and 0-0 energies. They revealed that TDA is generally able to reproduce the experimental band shapes along with the positions of the absorption and emission peaks. With respect to TDDFT, TDA leads to an underestimation of the relative intensities for most cases but does not alter any other feature of the spectra. For the case of 0-0 energies, it leads to a better agreement between theory and experiment compared to TDDFT for the majority of the molecules studied, at least when combined with the popular B3LYP functional.

Communication: Dynamical embedding: Correct quantum response from coupling TDDFT for a small cluster with classical near-field electrodynamics for an extended region

We show how to obtain the correct electronic response of a large system by embedding; a small region is propagated by TDDFT (time-dependent density functional theory) simultaneously with a classical electrodynamics evolution using the Near-Field method over a larger external region. The propagations are coupled through a combined time-dependent density yielding a common Coulomb potential. We show that the embedding correctly describes the plasmonic response of a Mg(0001) slab and its influence on the dynamical charge transfer between an adsorbed H2O molecule and the substrate, giving the same spectral shape as full TDDFT (similar plasmon peak and molecular-dependent differential spectra) with much less computational effort. The results demonstrate that atomistic embedding electrodynamics is promising for nanoplasmonics and nanopolaritonics.

Direct determination of exciton couplings from subsystem time-dependent density-functional theory within the Tamm–Dancoff approximation

In subsystem time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) [J. Neugebauer, J. Chem. Phys. 126, 134116 (2007)] localized excitations are used to calculate delocalized excitations in large chromophore aggregates. We have extended this formalism to allow for the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA). The resulting response equations have a form similar to a perturbative configuration interaction singles (CIS) approach. Thus, the inter-subsystem matrix elements in subsystem TDA can, in contrast to the full subsystem-TDDFT case, directly be interpreted as exciton coupling matrix elements. Here, we present the underlying theory of subsystem TDDFT within the TDA as well as first applications. Since for some classes of pigments, such as linear polyenes and carotenoids, TDA has been reported to perform better than full TDDFT, we also report applications of this formalism to exciton couplings in dimers of such pigments and in mixed bacteriochlorophyll-carotenoid systems. The improved description of the exciton couplings can be traced back to a more balanced description of the involved local excitations.

Density functional study of tetraphenylporphyrin long-range exciton coupling.

The performance of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) for calculations of long-range exciton circular dichroism (CD) is investigated. Tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) is used as a representative of a class of strongly absorbing chromophores for which exciton CD with chromophore separations of 50 Å and even beyond has been observed experimentally. A dimer model for TPP is set up to reproduce long-range exciton CD previously observed for a brevetoxin derivative. The calculated CD intensity is consistent with TPP separations of over 40 Å. It is found that a hybrid functional with fully long-range corrected range-separated exchange performs best for full TDDFT calculations of the dimer. The range-separation parameter is optimally tuned for TPP, resulting in a good quality TPP absorption spectrum and small DFT delocalization error (measured by the curvature of the energy calculated as a function of fractional electron numbers). Calculated TDDFT data for the absorption spectra of TPP are also used as input for a ‘matrix method’ (MM) model of the exciton CD. For long-range exciton CD, comparison of MM spectra with full TDDFT CD spectra for the dimer shows that the matrix method is capable of producing very accurate results. A MM spectrum obtained from TPP absorption data calculated with the nonhybrid Becke88–Perdew86 (BP) functional is shown to match the experimental brevetoxin spectrum ‘best’, but for the wrong reasons.

Analytical approach for the excited-state Hessian in time-dependent density functional theory: Formalism, implementation, and performance

The paper presents the formalism, implementation, and performance of the analytical approach for the excited-state Hessian in the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) that extends our previous work [J. Liu and W. Z. Liang, J. Chem. Phys. 135, 014113 (2011)] on the analytical Hessian in TDDFT within Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) to full TDDFT. In contrast to TDA-TDDFT, an appreciable advantage of full TDDFT is that it maintains the oscillator strength sum rule, and therefore yields more precise results for the oscillator strength and other related physical quantities. For the excited-state harmonic vibrational frequency calculation, however, full TDDFT does not seem to be advantageous since the numerical tests demonstrate that the accuracy of TDDFT with and without TDA are comparable to each other. As a common practice, the computed harmonic vibrational frequencies are scaled by a suitable scale factor to yield good agreement with the experimental fundamental frequencies. Here we apply both the optimized ground-state and excited-state scale factors to scale the calculated excited-state harmonic frequencies and find that the scaling decreases the root-mean-square errors. The optimized scale factors derived from the excited-state calculations are slightly smaller than those from the ground-state calculations.

Analytical Hessian of electronic excited states in time-dependent density functional theory with Tamm-Dancoff approximation

We present the analytical expression and computer implementation for the second-order energy derivatives of the electronic excited state with respect to the nuclear coordinates in the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) with Gaussian atomic orbital basis sets. Here, the Tamm-Dancoff approximation to the full TDDFT is adopted, and therefore the formulation process of TDDFT excited-state Hessian is similar to that of configuration interaction singles (CIS) Hessian. However, due to the replacement of the Hartree-Fock exchange integrals in CIS with the exchange-correlation kernels in TDDFT, many quantitative changes in the derived equations are arisen. The replacement also causes additional technical difficulties associated with the calculation of a large number of multiple-order functional derivatives with respect to the density variables and the nuclear coordinates. Numerical tests on a set of test molecules are performed. The simulated excited-state vibrational frequencies by the analytical Hessian approach are compared with those computed by CIS and the finite-difference method. It is found that the analytical Hessian method is superior to the finite-difference method in terms of the computational accuracy and efficiency. The numerical differentiation can be difficult due to root flipping for excited states that are close in energy. TDDFT yields more exact excited-state vibrational frequencies than CIS, which usually overestimates the values.

An efficient method for quantum transport simulations in the time domain

An approximate method based on adiabatic time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is presented, that allows for the description of the electron dynamics in nanoscale junctions under arbitrary time dependent external potentials. The density matrix of the device region is propagated according to the Liouville–von Neumann equation. The semi-infinite leads give rise to dissipative terms in the equation of motion which are calculated from first principles in the wide band limit. In contrast to earlier ab initio implementations of this formalism, the Hamiltonian is here approximated in the spirit of the density functional based tight-binding (DFTB) method. Results are presented for two prototypical molecular devices and compared to full TDDFT calculations. The temporal profile of the current traces is qualitatively well captured by the DFTB scheme. Steady state currents show considerable variations, both in comparison of approximate and full TDDFT, but also among TDDFT calculations with different basis sets.

Calculation of Optical Rotatory Dispersion and Electronic Circular Dichroism for Tris-bidentate Groups 8 and 9 Metal Complexes, With Emphasis on Exciton Coupling

The optical rotatory dispersion (ORD, both non-resonant and resonant) and the electronic circular dichroism (CD) of tris-bidentate transition metal complexes of the form [M(L)(3)](n+) (M = Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir; n = 2, 3; L = 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2'-bipyridine) are calculated using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The exciton CD band resulting from the coupling of ligand π-to-π* transitions is investigated in detail and analyzed in terms of exciton coupling of long-axis transitions using a dipole coupling model that takes TDDFT data for a single ligand as input. Results of the coupling model agree well with the full TDDFT CD spectra. The usefulness and reliability of this model is discussed. The resonant ORDs calculated directly from analytical damped linear TDDFT response compare well with Kramers-Kronig transformations of the calculated CD spectra. For comparisons of resonant ORD with experiment, one needs to consider wavelength shifts.

Calibration of Scalar Relativistic Density Functional Theory for the Calculation of Sulfur K-Edge X-ray Absorption Spectra

Sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been proven to be a powerful tool for investigating the electronic structures of sulfur-containing coordination complexes. The full information content of the spectra can be developed through a combination of experiment and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). In this work, the necessary calibration is carried out for a range of contemporary functionals (BP86, PBE, OLYP, OPBE, B3LYP, PBE0, TPSSh) in a scalar relativistic (0(th) order regular approximation, ZORA) DFT framework. It is shown that with recently developed segmented all-electron scalar relativistic (SARC) basis sets one obtains results that are as good as with large, uncontracted basis sets. The errors in the calibrated transition energies are on the order of 0.1 eV. The error in calibrated intensities is slightly larger, but the calculations are still in excellent agreement with experiment. The behavior of full TD-DFT linear response versus the Tamm-Dancoff approximation has been evaluated with the result that two methods are almost indistinguishable. The inclusion of relativistic effects barely changes the results for first row transition metal complexes, however, the contributions become visible for second-row transition metals and reach a maximum (of an approximately 10% change in the calibration parameters) for third row transition metal species. The protocol developed here is approximately 10 times more efficient than the previously employed protocol, which was based on large, uncontracted basis sets. The calibration strategy followed here may be readily extended to other edges.

Modeling of the deposition of Na Clusters on MgO(001)

We investigate the dynamics of deposition of small Na clusters on MgO(001) surface. A hierarchical modeling is used combining quantum mechanical with molecular mechanical description. Full time-dependent density-functional theory is used for the cluster electrons while the substrate atoms are treated at a classical level. We consider ${\text{Na}}_{6}$ and ${\text{Na}}_{8}$ at various impact energies. We analyze the dependence on cluster geometry, trends with impact energy, and energy balance. We compare the results with deposit on the much softer Ar(001) surface.
