Effects of electronic correlation on the high harmonic generation in helium: A time-dependent configuration interaction singles vs time-dependent full configuration interaction study.

In this paper, we investigate the effects of full electronic correlation on high harmonic generation in the helium atom subjected to laser pulses of extremely high intensity. To do this, we perform real-time propagations of helium atom wavefunction using quantum chemistry methods coupled to Gaussian basis sets. Calculations are performed within the real-time time-dependent configuration interaction framework at two levels of theory: time-dependent configuration interaction with single excitations (uncorrelated method) and time-dependent full configuration interaction (fully correlated method). The electronic wavefunction is expanded in Dunning basis sets supplemented with functions adapted to describing highly excited and continuum states. We also compare the time-dependent configuration interaction results with grid-based propagations of the helium atom within the single-active-electron approximation. Our results show that when including the dynamical electron correlation, a noticeable improvement to the description of high harmonic generation (HHG) can be achieved in terms of, e.g., a more constant intensity in the lower energy part of the harmonic plateau. However, such effects can be captured only if the basis set used suffices to reproduce the most basic features, such as the HHG cutoff position, at the uncorrelated level of theory.

A theoretical study of linear beryllium chains: Full configuration interaction

We present a full configuration interaction study of Be(N) (N=2,3,4,5) linear chains. A comparative study of the basis-set effect on the reproduction of the energy profile has been reported. In particular, the 3s1p, 4s2p, 4s2p1d, 5s3p2d, and 5s3p2d1f bases were selected. For the smallest chains (i.e., Be(2) and Be(3)), smaller basis sets give dissociative energy profiles, so large basis set is demanded for the reproduction of equilibrium minima in the structures. For Be(4) and Be(5) linear chains, the energy profiles show a minimum also by using the smallest basis sets, but the largest ones give a much stronger stabilization energy. For all the structures, two spin states have been studied: the singlet and the triplet. It is shown that the energy separation of the two states, in the equilibrium region, is small and decays exponentially with respect to the number of atoms in the chain. Finally an interpolative technique allowing for the estimation of the long-chain parameters from shorter ones is presented.

Full configuration interaction study of the metal-insulator transition in model systems: LiN linear chains (N=2,4,6,8)

The precursor of the metal-insulator transition is studied at ab initio level in linear chains of equally spaced lithium atoms. In particular, full configuration interaction calculations (up to 1 x 10(9) determinants) are performed, in order to take into account the different nature of the wave function at different internuclear distances. Several indicators of the Metal-Insulator transition (minimum of the energy gap, maximum of the localization tensor or of the polarizability) are considered and discussed. It is shown that the different indicators give concordant results, showing a rapid change in the nature of the wave function at an internuclear distance of about 7 bohrs.

Ab initio study of H + + H 2 collisions: Elastic/inelastic and charge transfer processes

An ab initio full configuration interaction study has been undertaken to obtain the global potential energy surfaces for the ground and the first excited electronic state of the H + + H 2 system employing Dunning’s cc-pVQZ basis set. Using the ab initio approach the corresponding quasi-diabatic potential energy surfaces and coupling potentials have been obtained. A time-independent quantum mechanical study has been also undertaken for both the inelastic and charge transfer processes at the experimental collision energy E c.m. = 20.0 eV and the preliminary results show better agreement with the experimental data as compared to the earlier available theoretical studies.

Ab initio study of AmCl(+): f-f spectroscopy and chemical binding.

A valence full configuration interaction study with a polarized double-zeta quality basis set has been carried out for the lowest 49 electronic states of AmCl(+). The calculations use a pseudopotential treatment for the core electrons and incorporate a one-electron spin-orbit interaction operator. Electrons in the valence s, p, d, and f subshells were included in the active space. The resulting electronic potential energy curves are largely repulsive. The chemical bonding is ionic in character with negligible participation of 5f electrons. The molecular f-f spectroscopy of AmCl(+) arises essentially from an in situ Am(2+) core with states slightly redshifted by the presence of chloride ion. Am(+)+Cl asymptotes which give rise to the few attractive potential energy curves can be predicted by analysis of the f-f spectroscopy of isolated Am(+) and Am(2+). The attractive curves have substantial binding energies, on the order of 75-80 kcal/mol, and are noticeably lower than recent indirect measurements on the isovalent EuCl(+). An independent empirical correlation supports the predicted reduction in AmCl(+) binding energy. The energies of the repulsive curves are strongly dependent on the selection of the underlying atomic orbitals while the energies of the attractive curves do not display this sensitivity. The calculations were carried out using our recently developed parallel spin-orbit configuration interaction software.

A coupled cluster and full configuration interaction study of CN and CN −

Full configuration interaction (FCI) and coupled cluster (CC) calculations are carried out for the CN radical and CN − using the cc-pVDZ and an augmented cc-pVDZ basis set. In addition, CC calculations including up to quadruple excitations are carried out using the cc-pVTZ basis. At the FCI level, the equilibrium distance is 1.1969 Å, the harmonic frequency is 2020.1 cm −1, the electronic contribution to the atomization energy is 667 kJ/mol and the vertical electron affinity is 0.12962 E h. The contributions from quadruple and quintuple excitations to the harmonic frequency are found to be 20 and 5 cm −1, respectively. The quadruple excitations give a contribution of 4 kJ/mol to the atomization energy and 0.00013 E h to the vertical electron affinity. None of the calculations indicate that the convergence of the CC hierarchy is slower for open-shell than for closed-shell systems.

A full configuration interaction study of the low-lying states of the BH molecule

A full configuration interaction study on the BH molecule is presented. The potential energy curves of 20 different electronic states have been calculated correlating the four valence electrons. On the two most important states, i.e. the X1Σ+ and A1Π states, a complete study has been performed. This includes the effect of core electron correlation, estimated via truncated configuration interaction techniques. The dissociation energy of the molecule in the two states and the height of the predissociative barrier in the A1Π state have been determined with basis sets of increasing quality.

Full configuration interaction study of the ground state of closed‐shell cyclic PPP polyenes

AbstractFull configuration interaction (FCI) calculations are reported for the closed‐shell cyclic polyenes CNHN (N = 6, 10, 14, 18) in the Pariser–Parr–Pople (PPP) approximation, as a function of the hopping parameter β. A wide range of values of β is considered, from a highly correlated situation, β = 0, to a very weakly correlated limit, β = −10 eV. An estimate of the role of higher than two‐body connected cluster components was done, through a partial (i.e., limited to two‐body terms in the exponent) cluster analysis performed on the FCI wave function. The comparison with the approximate coupled pair theory that accounts for quadruply excited clusters [see P. Piecuch and J. Paldus, Theor. Chim. Acta 78, 65 (1990)] shows a good agreement in the whole range of the hopping parameter, particularly when the contribution of connected triples excitations is also taken into account. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Differential correlation effects in chemisorption cluster model calculations: an FCI study

The interaction of atomic hydrogen with Cu 5 and Ag 5 cluster models simulating the Cu(100) and Ag(100) surfaces has been studied at the full configuration interaction (FCI) level in order to establish the transferability of differential correlation arising from the valence shell. It is shown that pseudopotentials that deal explicitly with one electron or eleven electrons lead to differential correlation effects which agree to within 1–2 mhartree when a localization procedure is used to separate d-shell MOs from the valence ones.

On the performance of atomic natural orbital basis sets: A full configuration interaction study

The performance of atomic natural orbital (ANO) basis sets has been studied by comparing self-consistant field (SCF) and full configuration interaction (CI) results obtained for the first row atoms and hydrides. The ANO results have been compared with those obtained using a segmented basis set containing the same number of contracted basis functions. The total energies obtained with the ANO basis sets are always lower than the one obtained by using the segmented one. However, for the hydrides, differential electronic correlation energy obtained with the ANO basis set may be smaller than the one recovered with the segmented set. We relate this poorer differential correlation energy for the ANO basis set to the fact that only one contracted d function is used for the ANO and segmented basis sets.
