Abstract. The complex dynamics of freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs) necessitate proactive monitoring approaches to mitigate their impacts. The rapid breakthrough in computing prowess and statistical advances is triggering the development of data-driven techniques such as machine learning (ML) models, which have been shown in different fields to be instrumental in finding patterns for explaining relationships in observed data. This study assesses the ability of ML models for HABs monitoring in a lake using chlorophyll-a concentration as the index. The selected models for this study were regression tree, random forest (RF), multilayer perceptron (MLP), support vector regression (SVR), long short-term memory (LSTM), and gated recurrent unit (GRU) models, with the last two models able to consider the temporal sequence of obtained water quality datasets. The results showed that the RF model with R2, mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.87 µgL-1, 0.97 µgL-1, and 3.53 µgL-1, respectively, outperformed the SVR, MLP, and regression tree models. LSTM model with MAE and RMSE of 2.39 µgL-1 and 3.29 µgL-1, respectively, predicted temporal dynamics of chlorophyll-a better than GRU, although with more runtime, and showed the potential for developing real-time HAB monitoring and early warning systems. The findings reveal the robustness of the chosen ML models, thereby shedding light on crucial factors that necessitate careful deliberation by researchers and policymakers in determining the most suitable approaches for monitoring HABs. The Role of Climate Change in the Proliferation of Freshwater Harmful Algal Blooms in Inland Water Bodies of the United States

Abstract Harmful algae and cyanobacteria blooms are increasing in frequency and intensity in freshwater systems due to anthropogenic impacts such as nutrient loading in watersheds and engineered alterations of natural waterways. There are multiple physical factors that affect the conditions in a freshwater system that contribute to optimal habitats for harmful algae and toxin-producing cyanobacteria. A growing body of research shows that climate change stressors also are impacting water-body conditions that favor harmful algae and cyanobacteria species over other phytoplankton. The overgrowth of these organisms, or a “bloom,” increases the opportunity for exposure to toxins by humans, companion animals, livestock, and wildlife. As waters warm and precipitation patterns change over time, exposure to these blooms is projected to increase. Hence, it is important that states and tribes develop monitoring and reporting strategies as well as align governmental policies to protect their citizens and ecosystems within their jurisdiction. Currently, the policies and approaches taken to monitor and report on harmful algae and cyanobacteria blooms vary widely among states, and it is undetermined if any tribes have specific policies on harmful algae blooms. This paper synthesizes research on algal blooms in inland freshwater systems of the United States. This review examines how climate change contributes to trends in bloom frequency or severity and outlines approaches that states and tribes may use to monitor, report, and respond to harmful algae and cyanobacteria blooms. Significance Statement Inland bodies of freshwater supply drinking water for humans and animals, water for irrigating crops, habitats for aquatic species, places of cultural significance for Indigenous peoples, and other important functions. Many of these bodies of water have been polluted with runoff from industry, including agriculture, and already support harmful algal blooms during warm conditions. Hot extremes associated with climate change are expected to increase the occurrence and duration of harmful algal blooms, and in some places, initiate blooms where none have been recorded previously. These toxic blooms are harmful to people, companion animals, livestock, and wildlife. It is important to review the interconnections among biological, climate, and water systems to monitor blooms and alert the public about their toxin production.

A novel index reveals disconnects between recreational harmful algal bloom exposure risks and responses among U.S. states

AbstractRecreational and occupational contact with freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs) pose human health and economic risks worldwide. Individual U.S. states control monitoring, reporting, and mitigation of recreational exposure to HABs. We surveyed states to catalog responses to HAB problems. We used this data to develop a state‐specific HAB response index (HABRI) and compared it to HAB risks derived from empirical nation‐wide data and per capita state environmental management and public health spending. States varied in regulations, reporting, monitoring, communication, and mitigation. The HABRI was not correlated with empirically based risk. Several states had no limits on toxin exposure or limits that were higher than recommended by the USEPA or World Health Organization. Other states did not provide public signage or notification when HABs were occurring and recreation could be hazardous. Increased federal involvement, communication among states, and state and federal legislation could minimize this variation and positively influence responses. We identify best practices for addressing HABs in our study that could provide guidance to authorities in any part of the world while developing new programs or enhancing existing efforts.

Variation in resource competition traits among Microcystis strains is affected by their microbiomes.

Freshwater harmful algal blooms are often dominated by Microcystis, a phylogenetically cohesive group of cyanobacteria marked by extensive genetic and physiological diversity. We have previously shown that this genetic diversity and the presence of a microbiome of heterotrophic bacteria influences competitive interactions with eukaryotic phytoplankton. In this study, we sought to explain these observations by characterizing Monod equation parameters for resource usage (maximum growth rate μ max, half-saturation value for growth K s, and quota) as a function of N and P levels for four strains (NIES-843, PCC 9701, PCC 7806 [WT], and PCC 7806 ΔmcyB) in presence and absence of a microbiome derived from Microcystis isolated from Lake Erie. Results indicated limited differences in maximum growth rates but more pronounced differences in half-saturation values among Microcystis strains. The largest impact of the microbiome was reducing the minimal nitrogen concentration sustaining growth and reducing half saturation values, with variable results depending on the Microcystis strain. Microcystis strains also differed from each other in their N and P quotas and the extent to which microbiome presence affected them. Our data highlight the importance of the microbiome in altering Microcystis-intrinsic traits, strain competitive hierarchies, and thus bloom dynamics. As quota, μ max, and K s are commonly used in models for harmful algal blooms, our data suggest that model improvement may be possible by incorporating genotype dependencies of resource-use parameters.

The cyanobacteria are very obvious because they can produce cyanotoxin (dermatoxins, hepatotoxins, and neurotoxins) and anatoxin-a. It is most likely to cause death in humans and animals. Also, anatoxin-a has been implicated in animal mortality and can cause death in minutes. As a result, it is essential to research anatoxin-a, one of the neurotoxins, from three distinct aspects: mode of action and chronic or sublethal effects.

Combined effects of fluoroquinolone antibiotics and organophosphate flame retardants on Microcystis aeruginosa.

As freshwater harmful algal blooms continue to rise in frequency and severity, increasing focus is made on the effects of mixed pollutants and the dominant cyanobacterial species Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa). However, few studies have investigated whether M. aeruginosa has a synergistic relationship with two common pollutants, namely, organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) and fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs). In this paper, three FQs and three OPFRs commonly detected in freshwaters were selected to construct a ternary mixture of FQs, a ternary mixture of OPFRs, and a six-component mixture of OPFRs and FQs. The effects of single substance and mixture on the growth of M. aeruginosa were determined at 24, 48, 72, and 96h, and the toxicities of the mixture were evaluated by concentration addition model and independent action model. The results showed that the mixture of FQs and the mixture of OPFRs do not show toxicological interaction. However, partial mixtures of OPFRs and FQs showed antagonism or synergism at different concentrations and times. This indicated that combined toxicities of OPFRs and FQs on M. aeruginosa were mixture ratio dependent, concentration dependent and time dependent. This study improves our understanding of the role of OPFRs and FQs in cyanobacterial outbreaks of Microcystis.

Relationship between freshwater harmful algal blooms and neurodegenerative disease incidence rates in South Korea

BackgroundDue to anthropogenic activities and global warming, the severity and distribution of harmful algal blooms (HABs) have been increasing steadily worldwide, including in South Korea (S. Korea). Previous studies reported that exposure to HABs could increase the risk of HAB-related diseases. However, very few studies examined the linkage between HABs and disease occurrence, particularly in S. Korea. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential impact of HABs on neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and motor neuron disease, at a population level.MethodsThirteen-year data (2005–2017) for chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentrations as a bloom-related parameter, annual numbers of NDs, and population information were collected. First, the entire area of S. Korea was divided into a grid of 1 km, and the population number in each 1-km grid was collected using the Statistical Geographic Information Service Plus system. Cross-sectional time series data were analyzed with two statistical models, a generalized linear mixed model and a generalized linear model.ResultsThe results show a general trend of increasing chl-a concentration and NDs year by year. We observed positive correlations between HAB intensity and the incidence rate of NDs. Particularly, HABs seem to have the most long-term carry-over effect on Parkinson’s disease. Another key finding was that a 5-km radius from the HAB location was the boundary that showed the most significant associations with three NDs.ConclusionsThis study provides statistical evidence that supports the potential risk of NDs from the exposure to HAB. Thus, it is recommended to monitor a broad spectrum of cyanotoxins, including neurotoxins, in bloom-affected regions in S. Korea and epidemiological studies in the future.

Drone-based water sampling and characterization of three freshwater harmful algal blooms in the United States

Freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs), caused mostly by toxic cyanobacteria, produce a range of cyanotoxins that threaten the health of humans and domestic animals. Climate conditions and anthropogenic influences such as agricultural run-off can alter the onset and intensity of HABs. Little is known about the distribution and spread of freshwater HABs. Current sampling protocols in some lakes involve teams of researchers that collect samples by hand from a boat and/or from the shoreline. Water samples can be collected from the surface, from discrete-depth collections, and/or from depth-integrated intervals. These collections are often restricted to certain months of the year, and generally are only performed at a limited number of collection sites. In lakes with active HABs, surface samples are generally sufficient for HAB water quality assessments. We used a unique DrOne Water Sampling SystEm (DOWSE) to collect water samples from the surface of three different HABs in Ohio (Grand Lake St Marys, GLSM and Lake Erie) and Virginia (Lake Anna), United States in 2019. The DOWSE consisted of a 3D-printed sampling device tethered to a drone (uncrewed aerial system, or UAS), and was used to collect surface water samples at different distances (10–100 m) from the shore or from an anchored boat. One hundred and eighty water samples (40 at GLSM, 20 at Lake Erie, and 120 at Lake Anna) were collected and analyzed from 18 drone flights. Our methods included testing for cyanotoxins, phycocyanin, and nutrients from surface water samples. Mean concentrations of microcystins (MCs) in drone water samples were 15.00, 1.92, and 0.02 ppb for GLSM, Lake Erie, and Lake Anna, respectively. Lake Anna had low levels of anatoxin in nearly all (111/120) of the drone water samples. Mean concentrations of phycocyanin in drone water samples were 687, 38, and 62 ppb for GLSM, Lake Erie, and Lake Anna, respectively. High levels of total phosphorus were observed in the drone water samples from GLSM (mean of 0.34 mg/L) and Lake Erie (mean of 0.12 mg/L). Lake Anna had the highest variability of total phosphorus with concentrations that ranged from 0.01 mg/L to 0.21 mg/L, with a mean of 0.06 mg/L. Nitrate levels varied greatly across sites, inverse with bloom biomass, ranging from below detection to 3.64 mg/L, with highest mean values in Lake Erie followed by GLSM and Lake Anna, respectively. Drones offer a rapid, targeted collection of water samples from virtually anywhere on a lake with an active HAB without the need for a boat which can disturb the surrounding water. Drones are, however, limited in their ability to operate during inclement weather such as rain and heavy winds. Collectively, our results highlight numerous opportunities for drone-based water sampling technologies to track, predict, and respond to HABs in the future.

Integrative monitoring strategy for marine and freshwater harmful algal blooms and toxins across the freshwater-to-marine continuum.

Many coastal states throughout the USA have observed negative effects in marine and estuarine environments caused by cyanotoxins produced in inland waterbodies that were transported downstream or produced in the estuaries. Estuaries and other downstream receiving waters now face the dual risk of impacts from harmful algal blooms (HABs) that occur in the coastal ocean as well as those originating in inland watersheds. Despite this risk, most HAB monitoring efforts do not account for hydrological connections in their monitoring strategies and designs. Monitoring efforts in California have revealed the persistent detection of cyanotoxins across the freshwater-to-marine continuum. These studies underscore the importance of inland waters as conduits for the transfer of cyanotoxins to the marine environment and highlight the importance of approaches that can monitor across hydrologically connected waterbodies. A HAB monitoring strategy is presented for the freshwater-to-marine continuum to inform HAB management and mitigation efforts and address the physical and hydrologic challenges encountered when monitoring in these systems. Three main recommendations are presented based on published studies, new datasets, and existing monitoring programs. First, HAB monitoring would benefit from coordinated and cohesive efforts across hydrologically interconnected waterbodies and across organizational and political boundaries and jurisdictions. Second, a combination of sampling modalities would provide the most effective monitoring for HAB toxin dynamics and transport across hydrologically connected waterbodies, from headwater sources to downstream receiving waterbodies. Third, routine monitoring is needed for toxin mixtures at the land-sea interface including algal toxins of marine origins as well as cyanotoxins that are sourced from inland freshwater or produced in estuaries. Case studies from California are presented to illustrate the implementation of these recommendations, but these recommendations can also be applied to inland states or regions where the downstream receiving waterbody is a freshwater lake, reservoir, or river. As We Drink and Breathe: Adverse Health Effects of Microcystins and Other Harmful Algal Bloom Toxins in the Liver, Gut, Lungs and Beyond.

Freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs) are increasing in number and severity worldwide. These HABs are chiefly composed of one or more species of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, such as Microcystis and Anabaena. Numerous HAB cyanobacterial species produce toxins (e.g., microcystin and anatoxin—collectively referred to as HAB toxins) that disrupt ecosystems, impact water and air quality, and deter recreation because they are harmful to both human and animal health. Exposure to these toxins can occur through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact. Acute health effects of HAB toxins have been well documented and include symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea, headache, fever, and skin rashes. While these adverse effects typically increase with amount, duration, and frequency of exposure, susceptibility to HAB toxins may also be increased by the presence of comorbidities. The emerging science on potential long-term or chronic effects of HAB toxins with a particular emphasis on microcystins, especially in vulnerable populations such as those with pre-existing liver or gastrointestinal disease, is summarized herein. This review suggests additional research is needed to define at-risk populations who may be helped by preventative measures. Furthermore, studies are required to develop a mechanistic understanding of chronic, low-dose exposure to HAB toxins so that appropriate preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies can be created in a targeted fashion.

Modeling Anthropogenic and Environmental Influences on Freshwater Harmful Algal Bloom Development Detected by MERIS Over the Central United States.

Human and ecological health have been threatened by the increase of cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) in freshwater systems. Successful mitigation of this risk requires understanding the factors driving cyanoHABs at a broad scale. To inform management priorities and decisions, we employed random forest modeling to identify major cyanoHAB drivers in 369 freshwater lakes distributed across 15 upper Midwest states during the 2011 bloom season (July–October). We used Cyanobacteria Index (CI_cyano)—A remotely sensed product derived from the MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) aboard the European Space Agency's Envisat satellite—as the response variable to obtain variable importance metrics for 75 landscape and lake physiographic predictor variables. Lakes were stratified into high and low elevation categories to further focus CI_cyano variable importance identification by anthropogenic and natural influences. “High elevation” watershed land cover (LC) was primarily forest or natural vegetation, compared with “low elevation” watersheds LC dominated by anthropogenic landscapes (e.g., agriculture and municipalities). We used the top ranked 25 Random Forest variables to create a classification and regression tree (CART) for both low and high elevation lake designations to identify variable thresholds for possible management mitigation. Mean CI_cyano was 3 times larger for “low elevation” lakes than for “high elevation” lakes, with both mean values exceeding the “High” World Health Organization recreational guidance/action level threshold for cyanobacteria (100,000 cells/mL). Agrarian‐related variables were prominent across all 369 lakes and low elevation lakes. High elevation lakes showed more influence of lakeside LC than for the low elevation lakes.

Acute cyanotoxin poisoning reveals a marginal effect on mouse gut microbiome composition but indicates metabolic shifts related to liver and gut inflammation

Freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a major environmental health problem worldwide. HABs are caused by a predominance of cyanobacteria, some of which produce potent toxins. The most ubiquitous cyanotoxin is microcystin (MC) and the congener MC-LR is the most studied due to its toxicity. Short-term exposure to toxins can cause gut microbiome disturbances, but this has not been well described with MC-LR exposure. This study investigated the gut microbial communities of mice from a prior study, which identified significant liver toxicity from ingestion of MC-LR daily for 8 days. CD-1 mice were divided into three dosage groups: control, low exposure (sub-lethal MC-LR concentration), and high exposure (near-lethal MC-LR concentration). Fecal samples were analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing. Results revealed that at population level, there were no significant shifts in bacterial diversity or the microbial community structure over the exposure period. However, there were significant differences between male and female mice. Predictive functional gene analysis indicated that several metabolic pathways were significantly different in the high dose group before exposure and following 7 doses of MC-LR, as well as between the control and high dose groups on Day 8. Significant differentially abundant taxa were also identified contributing to these pathways. Several pathways, including superpathway of N-acetylneuraminate degradation, were related to liver and gut inflammation. The outcome of this study suggests a need for in-depth investigation of metabolic activity and other functions in the gut in future studies, as well as potential consideration of the role of sex in MC-LR toxicity.

Hurricanes, El Ni\xf1o and harmful algal blooms in two sub-tropical Florida estuaries: Direct and indirect impacts

Future increases in the intensity of hurricanes and El Niño periods predicted by climate change models have focused attention on their role in stimulating harmful algal blooms (HABs). A series of hurricanes that recently impacted Florida (USA) provided a unique opportunity to explore the relationships between hurricanes, El Niño and HABs in two Florida estuaries subject to repeated intense ecosystem disruptive HABs, the Indian River Lagoon and the St. Lucie Estuary. The roles that hurricanes and El Niño play in contributing to HAB events are examined in the context of key structural and functional features of each estuary and their watersheds, including morphology, water residence time and hydrology, such as the influence of Lake Okeechobee discharges into the St. Lucie Estuary. The most direct impact was the increase in rainfall associated with hurricanes and El Niño, resulting in enhanced nutrient loads which drive HABs in the Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee. Major HABs in Lake Okeechobee also present an indirect threat of freshwater HAB blooms in the St. Lucie Estuary via mandated discharges from the lake into the estuary during high rainfall periods. Conversely, during the absence of HABs in Lake Okeechobee, short water residence times produced by discharges into the St. Lucie Estuary can result in lower bloom intensities.

Harmful Algal Blooms Threaten the Health of Peri-Urban Fisher Communities: A case study in Kisumu Bay, Lake Victoria, Kenya.

Available guidance to mitigate health risks from exposure to freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs) is largely derived from temperate ecosystems. Yet in tropical ecosystems, HABs can occur year-round, and resource-dependent populations face multiple routes of exposure to toxic components. Along Winam Gulf, Lake Victoria, Kenya, fisher communities rely on lake water contaminated with microcystins (MCs) from HABs. In these peri-urban communities near Kisumu, we tested hypotheses that MCs exceed exposure guidelines across seasons, and persistent HABs present a chronic risk to fisher communities through ingestion with minimal water treatment and frequent, direct contact. We tested source waters at eleven communities across dry and rainy seasons from September 2015 through May 2016. We measured MCs, other metabolites, physicochemical parameters, chlorophyll a, phytoplankton abundance and diversity, and fecal indicators. We then selected four communities for interviews about water sources, usage, and treatment. Greater than 30% of source water samples exceeded WHO drinking water guidelines for MCs (1μg/L), and over 60% of source water samples exceeded USEPA guidelines for children and immunocompromised individuals. 50% of households reported sole use of raw lake water for drinking and household use, with alternate sources including rain and boreholes. Household chlorination was the most widespread treatment utilized. At this tropical, eutrophic lake, HABs pose a year-round health risk for fisher communities in resource -limited settings. Community-based solutions and site-specific guidance for Kisumu Bay and similarly impacted regions is needed to address a chronic health exposure likely to increase in severity and duration with global climate change.

Harmful algal blooms and liver diseases: focusing on the areas near the four major rivers in South Korea

Freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs) have become a global concern because blooms contain cyanotoxins that can cause liver damage and other negative health impacts. In South Korea, HABs have been frequently observed along the major rivers (Han, Geum, Nakdong, and Youngsan) in recent years. However, there are hardly any studies that report a linkage between HABs and human health, especially along the four major rivers where dams, weirs, and reservoirs were constructed, and sediments were dredged under the Four Major Rivers Project (FMRP) that ended in 2012. The goals of this study were to summarize spatial distribution patterns of HABs and investigate a potential association between HABs and liver diseases. Chlorophyll-a concentration was used to estimate bloom intensity since it was the only available bloom-related parameter that covers the entire rivers. Liver disease data (ICD-10 codes: K71–K77) were sorted by administrative districts. Generalized linear mixed model was used to analyze the bloom, liver diseases, and population data (2005–2016). The results show that chlorophyll-a levels significantly increased since 2013, except Han River region. There was a significant association between HAB intensity and incidence rate of liver diseases, except Han River area, and the extent of association significantly increased after the completion of the FMRP. For future studies, more in-depth epidemiological investigations are warranted in those areas to accurately determine more specific associations between HABs and liver diseases as well as other bloom-related diseases and symptoms. In addition, identification of major exposure pathways to cyanotoxins is needed to better protect public health in those bloom-affected areas.

Combined Danio rerio embryo morbidity, mortality and photomotor response assay: A tool for developmental risk assessment from chronic cyanoHAB exposure

Freshwater harmful algal blooms produce a broad array of bioactive compounds, with variable polarity. Acute exposure to cyanotoxins can impact the liver, nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, skin, and immune function. Increasing evidence suggests chronic effects from low-level exposures of cyanotoxins and other associated bioactive metabolites of cyanobacterial origin. These sundry compounds persist in drinking and recreational waters and challenge resource managers in detection and removal. A systematic approach to assess the developmental toxicity of cyanobacterial metabolite standards was employed utilizing a robust and high throughput developmental Danio rerio embryo platform that incorporated a neurobehavioral endpoint, photomotor response. Subsequently, we applied the platform to cyanobacterial bloom surface water samples taken from temperate recreational beaches and tropical lake subsistence drinking water sources as a model approach. Dechorionated Danio rerio embryos were statically immersed beginning at four to six hours post fertilization at environmentally relevant concentrations, and then assessed at 24 h and 5 days for morbidity, morphological changes, and photomotor response. At least one assessed endpoint deviated significantly for exposed embryos for 22 out of 25 metabolites examined. Notably, the alkaloid lyngbyatoxin–a resulted in profound, dose-dependent morbidity and mortality beginning at 5 μg/L. In addition, hydrophobic components of extracts from beach monitoring resulted in potent morbidity and mortality despite only trace cyanotoxins detected. The hydrophilic extracts with several order of magnitude higher concentrations of microcystins resulted in no morbidity or mortality. Developmental photomotor response was consistently altered in environmental bloom samples, independent of the presence or concentration of toxins detected in extracts. While limited with respect to more polar compounds, this novel screening approach complements specific fingerprinting of acutely toxic metabolites with robust assessment of developmental toxicity, critical for chronic exposure scenarios.

Genome evolution and host-microbiome shifts correspond with intraspecific niche divergence within harmful algal bloom-forming Microcystis aeruginosa.

Intraspecific niche divergence is an important driver of species range, population abundance and impacts on ecosystem functions. Genetic changes are the primary focus when studying intraspecific divergence; however, the role of ecological interactions, particularly host-microbiome symbioses, is receiving increased attention. The relative importance of these evolutionary and ecological mechanisms has seen only limited evaluation. To address this question, we used Microcystis aeruginosa, the globally distributed cyanobacterium that dominates freshwater harmful algal blooms. These blooms have been increasing in occurrence and intensity worldwide, causing major economic and ecological damages. We evaluated 46 isolates of M.aeruginosa and their microbiomes, collected from 14 lakes in Michigan, USA, that vary over 20-fold in phosphorus levels, the primary limiting nutrient in freshwater systems. Genomes of M.aeruginosa diverged along this phosphorus gradient in genomic architecture and protein functions. Fitness in low-phosphorus lakes corresponded with additional shifts within M.aeruginosa including genome-wide reductions in nitrogen use, an expansion of phosphorus assimilation genes and an alternative life history strategy of nonclonal colony formation. In addition to host shifts, despite culturing in common-garden conditions, host-microbiomes diverged along the gradient in taxonomy, but converged in function with evidence of metabolic interdependence between the host and its microbiome. Divergence corresponded with a physiological trade-off between fitness in low-phosphorus environments and growth rate in phosphorus-rich conditions. Co-occurrence of genotypes adapted to different nutrient environments in phosphorus-rich lakes may have critical implications for understanding how M.aeruginosa blooms persist after initial nutrient depletion. Ultimately, we demonstrate that the intertwined effects of genome evolution, host life history strategy and ecological interactions between a host and its microbiome correspond with an intraspecific niche shift with important implications for whole ecosystem function.

Tile Drainage and Anthropogenic Land Use Contribute to Harmful Algal Blooms and Microbiota Shifts in Inland Water Bodies.

Freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs), driven by nutrient inputs from anthropogenic sources, pose unique risks to human and ecological health worldwide. A major nutrient contributor is agricultural land use, specifically tile drainage discharge. Small lakes and ponds are at elevated risk for HAB appearance, as they are uniquely sensitive to nutrient input. HABs introduce exposure risk to microcystin (MC), hepatotoxic and potentially carcinogenic cyanotoxins. To investigate the impact of anthropogenic land use on small lakes and ponds, 24 sites in central Ohio were sampled over a 3-month period in late summer of 2015. MC concentration, microbial community structure, and water chemistry were analyzed. Land use intensity, including tile drainage systems, was the driver of clustering in principle component analysis, ultimately contributing to nutrient deposition, a driver of HABs. Relative abundance of HAB-forming genera was correlated with elevated concentrations of nitrate and soluble reactive phosphate. One location (FC) showed MC concentrations exceeding 875 μg/L and large community shifts in ciliates (Oligohymenophorea) associated with hypoxic conditions. The prokaryotic community at FC was dominated by Planktothrix sp. These results demonstrate the impact of HABs in small lakes and ponds, and that prevailing issues extend beyond cyanotoxins, such as cascading impacts on other trophic levels.

Removal of the algal toxin microcystin‐LR in permeable coastal sediments: Physical and numerical models

AbstractMicrocystin is one of the most common toxins associated with freshwater harmful algal blooms, but little is known about microcystin fate in the aquatic environment. Laboratory wave tank experiments were performed to determine whether exchange of surface water and pore water (benthic exchange) removes and dilutes microcystin‐LR (MC‐LR) at environmentally relevant concentrations in coastal waters overlying permeable sediments. Over the 100 h experiment, 60% of MC‐LR mass was removed due to interaction with sediment (via adsorption and/or biodegradation), while only 20% was removed in an experiment without sediment. The observed fate and transport of MC‐LR in sediments was adequately described with a one‐dimensional reactive transport model that uses an enhanced diffusion coefficient to represent benthic exchange of solutes. Numerical sensitivity studies showed that MC‐LR removal increases with hydraulic conductivity of sediment and wave height and decreases with water depth. For MC‐LR concentration at the WHO recreational guideline (20 ppb), sandy sediments can remove the equivalent MC‐LR mass in 1 m of surface water under typical nearshore wave conditions within tens of hours. In open water at large depths above a silty bed, removal times are much longer (on the order of weeks). Wave‐driven benthic exchange is therefore an important control on MC‐LR fate in energetic coastal areas but not in deep or calm settings where sediment–water interactions are greatly reduced. The nearshore fate of algal toxins is important to human health and socioeconomic vitality, since recreational activities and direct human exposures are concentrated along coasts.
