On the performance of QAM-FBMC systems in frequency-selective channels

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems present some shortcomings such as strict requirements for synchronization and reduced spectral efficiency. Filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) systems based on quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM-FBMC) have attracted increasing attention since they are considered an effective alternative to OFDM schemes. In this paper, the bit error rate (BER) of QAM-FBMC systems with single-tap equalization, is obtained. Moreover, the asymptotic (for a large number of subcarriers) expression of the BER and an approximate expression of the asymptotic BER are derived. The numerical results show that the derived BER expressions are quite accurate.

Implementation of preamble based GFDM prototype for robust 5G systems

AbstractGeneralized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) is a flexible block‐structured multi‐carrier scheme recently proposed for next‐generation wireless communication systems. There are various approaches suggested for its analysis and implementation via simulations but testing in real‐time environments is not heavily investigated. This paper carries out the real‐time implementation of the GFDM system utilizing software‐defined radio (SDR) by emphasizing mainly channel estimation and synchronization. Symbol timing, frequency offset, and channel estimate algorithms are applied using a windowed preamble with two identical halves to satisfy low egress noise requirements. Time and frequency estimation is evaluated in terms of residual offsets along with symbol error rate over frequency selective channels. This algorithm is extended to a preamble composed of multiple identical parts. This facilitates a large frequency estimation range at the cost of complexity. For practical validation of the above concepts, the National Instruments (NI) universal software radio peripheral (USRP) 2953R is employed as hardware and it is interfaced with LabVIEW.

THE PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF PRECODED SPACE-TIME FREQUENCY MIMO-GFDM OVER RAYLEIGH FADING CHANNELS

The physical layer is implemented in the present communication era with new multicarrier modulation schemes such as Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing with Multi-Input and Multi-Output (MIMO-GFDM) antenna systems to achieve good spectral efficiency and diversity order. This paper presents precoded Space-Time-Frequency MIMO-GFDM performance analysis to improve the bit error rate performance without increasing transmission power and bandwidth compared to conventional techniques. The proposed system also enhances the diversity order over frequency selective fading channels. In general, we need to perform channel matrix inversion operations at the receiver or channel precoding matrix operations at the transmitter to detect the symbols of MIMO-GFDM systems. This paper's proposed scheme completes the same task without performing channel matrix inversion. Orthogonal transform techniques such as Haar, Harley, Walsh-Hadamard, and Slant transforms are used as precoders at the transmitter for the proposed scheme. The simulation results are validated on the MATLAB working platform. We have compared the bit error rate of the PSTF-MIMO-GFDM system with Space-Time (ST) and Space Frequency (SF) as baseline schemes and different orthogonal transform precoding techniques.

Performance Evaluation of Fractal Wavelet Packet Transform on Wireless Communication Systems

The performance of the phase shift keying (PSK) modulation technique over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and multipath propagation channels generally becomes worse for higher-order modes. Therefore, a new modulation technique should be provided in order to have a system that is capable of transmitting data with higher efficiency while maintaining better performance at the same time. This paper presents the development of a fractal wavelet packet transform incorporated within the M-ary PSK system, namely M-ary PSK orthogonal wavelet division multiplexing (OWDM), which is proposed to obtain high performance of modulation in terms of spectrum efficiency and bandwidth resources intended for wireless communication systems. To demonstrate performance improvement over a Rayleigh frequency selective fading channel and in the presence of AWGN noise, the proposed system was evaluated and compared to the basic modulation system and M-ary PSK employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The performance results show that M-ary PSK OWDM had better performance in comparison with M-ary PSK OFDM and the conventional system. By utilizing 16 subcarriers, QPSK OWDM achieved bit error rate performance improvement from 1.5 × 10-3 to 1 × 10-4 for Eb/N0 of 20 dB with efficient bandwidth.

Performance Analysis of BER and SNR Performance in High-QAM Modulations Using Advancements in MIMO Systems

Wireless communications is one of the most active areas of technology development of our time. This development is being driven primarily by the transformation of what has been largely a medium for supporting voice telephony into a medium for supporting other services, such as the transmission of video, images, text, and data. Today, the widely deployed network type is based on a centralized approach that requires a network point of access, commonly called the Access Point (AP), to serves as a gateway between the mobile device and the Internet. The obtained results demonstrate that spatial diversity along with the power of STBC significantly improves the error performance in frequency selective wireless fading channels. The BER level is depend on the modulation type, SNR value and channel behavior. Modulation schemes that we have used in this paper are 4-QAM, 8-QAM, 16-QAM and 64-QAM which further improved using forward error correction codes (FEC). A comparison is made between the diversity gains of MIMO systems in terms of BER for high QAM modulation scheme. This work presents, a simulation toll MATLAB R2023a used for model implemented using Nakagami channel to study the performance analysis of Bit Error rate (BER) V/S Signal to Noise ratio (SNR). A decentralized HC-ADMM approach for large antenna arrays

This work addresses the evolving landscape of internet of things (IoT) applications and large antenna array systems, where optimizing spectral efficiency and simplifying design complexities are crucial. Focusing on two key challenges, the study introduces a novel hybrid analog-digital transceiver strategy tailored for frequency-selective channels. By integrating Shannon and Hartley theorems, the approach enhances data transfer rates, thereby optimizing radio frequency (RF) chain utilization in large-scale antennas. To achieve a balance between transceiver performance and hardware complexity, the study employs a decentralized alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework. The proposed hybrid consensus ADMM algorithm (HC-ADMM) ensures efficient convergence in decentralized optimization scenarios. Comparative analyses with ADMM and existing system transceiver optimization (ESTO) models highlight HC-ADMM's superior performance across key metrics such as spectral efficiency, efficiency per cell, total efficiency, and optimal scheduling of user equipment (UEs). Particularly notable is HC-ADMM's advanced optimization capabilities as the number of transmit antennas increases, positioning it as a promising approach for enhancing overall communication network performance.

Lower boundary capacity estimations of frequency-selective communication channels with PAM-n-signals achievable using resolution time theory

The issue of ensuring high specific capacity of promising wire telecommunication systems is one of the key problems of the last decade. At the same time, despite the existing spectrally efficient modulation methods that are used in existing communication systems, the majority of leading researchers associate further solution of this issue with the transition to the mode of information transmission at a rate "Faster-than-Nyquist" rate (FTN), in which the information receiving about the channel symbol occurs with pronounced intersymbol interference. In turn, this causes difficulties in the practical implementation of the receiver when using optimal signal processing algorithms with nonpolynomial computational complexity, and in the case of suboptimal demodulation methods implementing various types of channel equalization, due to conceptual limitations cannot provide a wide coverage of speeds in this mode. In this regard, the study of an alternative approach to processing signals with multi-position PAM-n-signals on the output of baseband frequency-selective channels (FSC) is relevant. The object of this paper is the study of the possibilities offered by the theory of resolution time for baseband FSC of the, in which information is transmitted using the PAM-n-signal, in the FTN mode. A modified mathematical model of FSC is presented, thanks to which analytical expressions are obtained for estimating the specific capacity in terms of the low bound capacity estimation introduced by Sh. Shamai, expressions for estimating the BER, including the case under the action of destabilizing factors on the symbol synchronization system. Auxiliary capacity estimations and rules for calculating the conditions for achieving them are introduced, convenient for engineering analysis. By means of numerical simulating for the most typical conditions inherent in wired FSC, which are modeled in this work by Chebyshev filters with ripple level of 3 dB and Butterworth filters, it is shown that in the FSN mode with a S/N ratio of no more than 40 dB and instability of the symbol synchronization system operation of 2.5% of the channel symbol duration with a bit error probability of 10–12, it is possible to expect a specific capacity of 5.7–8 bits/Hz*s. It is shown that these results are achieved by using hybrid forms of partial pulses. Recommendations for choosing a partial pulse shape are presented, their main properties are studied from the point of view of their engineering application.

DHT-based GFDM and STC-GFDM systems for beyond 5G wireless networks

This manuscript endeavours an exploration of Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM) as a promising alternative to the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) in next-generation cellular networks. GFDM’s exceptional performance in minimizing out-of-band emissions (OOBE) and maximizing spectral efficiency (SE) makes it a compelling candidate, especially when integrated with Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) technology to enhance reliability through spatial diversity. However, ensuring GFDM’s resilience against frequency-selective channels (FSCs), especially in low-latency scenarios, is crucial.This research investigates Discrete Hartley Transform (DHT) based GFDM and Space-Time Coded GFDM (STC-GFDM) systems, proposing a comprehensive framework to enhance performance metrics such as Bit Error Rate (BER) and Achievable Rate (AR). Further enhancements are achieved through a Minimum BER-Power Allocation (MBER-PA) strategy, optimizing BER and AR in QAM-based GFDM and STC-GFDM systems employing a DHT precoding scheme. Analytical expressions for BER and AR are derived and validated via Monte Carlo simulations. Additionally, a comparative analysis against traditional GFDM systems is conducted, evaluating metrics including Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR), BER, and AR.

Application of complex-valued convolutional neural networks for equalization and detection of SEFDM systems

Background. The disadvantage of spectrally efficient signals with frequency multiplexing is the occurrence of intersymbol interference, which is further aggravated when these signals propagate in frequency selective channels.
 Aim. The possibility and effectiveness of using neural network approaches for channel equalization and signal detection in communication systems using SEFDM signals has been assessed.
 Methods. A receiver structure for SEFDM systems based on a deep complex-valued convolutional neural network is proposed, which allows recovering bits from the temporal representation of the signal without using the fractional Fourier transform and inverting the cross-correlation matrix between frequency subcarriers. A two-stage network training scheme has been developed. Based on simulation modeling, a comparative analysis of the noise immunity of SEFDM systems was carried out both in a channel with white Gaussian noise and in a channel with Rayleigh fading, using classical and neural network receivers.
 Results. It is shown that there is no loss of noise immunity in channels with additive white Gaussian noise and an increase in noise immunity of the system up to 2 dB in the channel specified by the extended automotive model (3GPP-EVA).
 Conclusion. The effectiveness of using deep neural complex-valued convolutional networks as receivers for spectrally efficient communication systems, as well as their advantage over classical ones, is shown.

Channel Parameter Estimation of mmWave MIMO System in Urban Traffic Scene: A Training Channel-Based Method

In frequency selective channel environment, channel estimation in hybrid precoding millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system is a challenge issue. To solve this problem, we propose an effective channel estimation scheme for frequency selective channel, which is based on the training channel model in urban traffic environment. Considering that the practical mmWave MIMO channel is sparsity and the subcarrier multi-channels have the same sparse structure, we regard the channel estimation problem as the sparse channel recovery, and propose a multipath simultaneous matching tracking estimation method. It is assumed that the noise between the practical channels has a certain correlation, and the noise correlation has an impact on the selection of the optimal atomic support set in the process of channel recovery. Therefore, noise weighting is introduced in our proposed method. The simulation results prove the validity of this proposed method in frequency selective mmWave MIMO channel. Without increasing the complexity of the algorithm, the proposed method can achieve better local performance than the traditional classical methods.

On the optimum multicarrier performance with memoryless nonlinearities

One of the major problems associated with multicarrier signals is their high envelope fluctuations that lead to implementation difficulties. Therefore, multicarrier signals are usually submitted to nonlinear operations such as clipping to simplify the power amplification, DAC (Digital-to-Analog Conversion) and other digital signal processing operations. However, these nonlinear operations lead to nonlinear noise that usually is associated with performance degradation. Recently, it was shown that the nonlinear distortion associated to bandpass memoryless nonlinear devices not only does not necessarily means performance degradation, but can even lead to performance gains. In this paper we study the impact of non-bandpass memoryless nonlinearities on the performance of multicarrier signals. We consider both nonlinear devices operating on the real-valued multicarrier signals as well as Cartesian nonlinear devices (also denoted as I-Q nonlinearities) operating separately on the real and imaginary parts of the complex envelope of multicarrier signals. We present a theoretical analysis of the potential performance improvements associated with the optimum detection of multicarrier signals, by deriving accurate theoretical expressions for both the average asymptotic gains in ideal AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise) channels and the asymptotic gain distribution for frequency-selective channels with multipath Rayleigh fading.

A Survey on Spatial Modulation OFDM: Optimal Detection and Performance Analysis

Spatial modulation is a novel modulation scheme that aims to acquire a trade-off between the two adverse purposes in wireless communications, namely the improvements of data rate and data reliability, by adjusting the operational transmit antenna index in the emitted bits. To fight against inter-symbol interference (ISI) present in frequency selective channels, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) as become a extensively accepted and used mechanism. We investigate in this work the performance of SM-OFDM modulation over frequency selective MIMO channel using quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) scheme. At the receiver side, a group of detectors is proposed to recover the active transmit antenna index (Tx-antenna) and the emitted data sequence. In this paper, a new SM-OFDM-based scheme is proposed, which adds another element of information in the transmitted SM-data block consisting of a chosen constellation among the available rotated set. To attain this, an additional index is used to select the specific constellation. At the receiver, a set of detectors is proposed to jointly estimate the transmitted symbol, as well as the used constellation and the active transmit antenna indices. The comparison of the performance of this new scheme against the conventional SM-OFDM shows an increased spectral efficiency at the price of a slight degradation in bit error rate. The proposed scheme permits a trade-off between the quality of the communication and the achieved spectral efficiency. Some concluding remarks are drawn over simulation results.

Performance Analysis of a Novel Multiple Access Spatial Modulation Architecture based on STBC-OFDM and CDMA over Nakagami-m fading Channel

One of the schemes which are likely to be adopted in the forthcoming wireless communication standards is the so-called spatial modulation (SM). However, the wireless channels pertaining to such standards will mostly be frequency selective because of the involved high data rates, and SM technique alone can not overcome the resulting signal distortion. In this context, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been used as an efficient solution to combat this impediment, and space-time block coding (STBC)-OFDM has followed as an innovative approach merging the viable features of OFDM and the reliability enhancement capabilities of STBC. Obviously, SM solutions in the presence of multiple users communicating in frequency selective channels should be targeted. To fulfill such a need, a new SM-based architecture incorporating STBC-OFDM and CDMA is proposed in this work and is shown to exhibit a performance which is superior to state-of-the-art alternatives. Furthermore, its sensitivity to the aforementioned adverse parameters is studied in Nagakami channel.

Security in Spatially Correlated MIMO OSFBC OFDM Multicast System over Frequency Selective Fading Channel

The system performance can be improved significantly by employing orthogonal space-frequency block coding (OSFBC) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) because in this combination the receiver suffers lesser complexity. Recently, the wireless systems are deploying by the increasing number of closely spaced antennas. So the assumption of in-dependency among the antenna brunches is not valid. Realizing the advantages of this combination of system and taking account the effect of antenna correlation, this work demonstrates the insight of secured wireless multicasting network consisting multiple antennas both in transmitter and receiver over spatially correlated frequency selective fading channels. The desired signals have been protected from eavesdropping by useful impact of antenna diversity and antenna correlation. The main contribution of this work is the development of mathematical models of the probability of non-zero secrecy multicast capacity (PNSMC) and the secure outage probability for multicasting (SOPM) to secure the system from eavesdropping. The analytical results are verified via Monte-Carlo simulation to ensure the validity of the developed mathematical model. Moreover, the numerical analysis gives a clear indication that security in OSFBC OFDM system with antenna diversity over spatially correlated frequency selective fading channel upgrades due to the effect of transmit antenna correlation and degrades due to receive antenna correlation. But the loss of this security can be significantly reduced employing antenna diversity with OSFBC-OFDM systems.
