The authors report further Raman measurements of the chloranil soft mode. An iodine cell has been set in the scattered beam to improve the results of their previous study. They have been able to show a mean-field behaviour up to Tc-1 K. At this temperature the soft-mode frequency is equal to 1.6 cm-1. Therefore, chloranil is an excellent example of a substance that undergoes a displacive structural phase transition. At temperatures closer to Tc this mode becomes overdamped and its response function can be likened to a relaxational function. The corresponding relaxation time appears to be about 4*10-11 s.
