Agnes Heller's Ecce Homo: A Neomodern Vision of Moral Anthropology

By dovetailing the classical concepts of virtue, beauty, harmony and happiness with the cardinal values of modern imagination, life and freedom, Agnes Heller galvanizes modernity's anthropological reflexivity and hints at the prospect of a classicism pertinent to the present. Beyond nostalgia for an ancient past or apology for a contemporary present, her moral anthropology is approached via a dialectical elucidation of aspects of epicurean theory attuned to modernity's complexity. Under the contemporary condition of waning postmodern challenges, escalating confusion and cynicism, moral anthropology's task is as one of probing modernity's destiny for a non-predatory humanism that combines the existential wisdom of ancient theory with modern values.

States of Injury: Josephine Butler on Slavery, Citizenship, and the Boer War

In her recent collection of essays, States of Injury: Power and Freedom in Late Modernity (1995), Wendy Brown argues that western liberal political constituencies, feminists among them, have tradition ally protested against exclusion from the universal category of “citizen” by insisting on their “wounded attachments” to the nationstate as the basis for civic participation. This essay attempts to lend historical depth to her provocative contention by analyzing a discrete example of Victorian feminist production, Josephine Butler's Native Races and the War (1900). In her tract, which was a defense of British military aggression in South Africa as well as of its imperial interests there, Butler mobilizes the discourse of antislavery to justify Britain's involvement in the war as well as to foreground the “pathetic” plight of African men under Afrikaner rule. In a series of rhetorical maneuvers that echo and refigure British feminists' attachments to the sentimentalized discourses of antislavery, Butler uses the “states of injury” suffered by black South Africans to make an argument for the necessity not just of British imperial rule, but British women's suffrage as well.

Summary This article is about the dangers and chances of modern pluralism for ethics and morality. Modern freedom and the pluralism which is necessarily connected with it, seem to continue to occupy an important place in people's personal value experience and in society's range of values, in spite of all sorts of criticisms. By developing an ethics of responsibility (an “autonomous” morality), numerous representatives of the newer moral theology attempt to adapt to this cultural situation and to propose freedom as a sufficient basis for a renewed concept of morality. The present article sketches a few main lines of this model of morality, and then addresses the question, to what extent pluralism may be seen as a chance for a differentiated morality, which does more justice to real life. Traditional moral theology already proves to be less rigid in relation to a morality adapted to individual circumstances than is often assumed. IT is not because WILLIAM PRYNNE stands in our literature as one of our most voluminous authors, nor because he is conspicuous in our history as a sufferer for conscience' sake, that I desire to interest the great body of English readers in his biography. His works, and the circumstances of his personal history, considered simply by themselves, deserve the attention ofthe scholar and the historian, but taken in connection with the general incidents of the times in which he lived they acquire a much higher importance and have a far more extensive application. Viewed in that relation, they enlarge our knowledge of the momentous transactions which occurred in England between 1625 and 1660; they give us views of men and events, nearer and more distinct than can be derived from the wide survey of the general historian; and they enable us—which is more valuable than anything else—to drink deep into the general spirit of that eventful period. It is of the greatest importance that the history of that birth-time of our modern freedom and our consequent greatness should be thoroughly understood I hope that the life of William Prynne, which 1 have endeavoured to write upon the principle I have indicated, will conduce in some slight degree to their being so.
