Franklin Squares: A Chapter in the Scientific Studies of Magical Squares

Several aspects of magic(al) squares studies fall within the computational universe. Experimental computation has revealed patterns, some of which have lead to analytic insights, theorems, or combinatorial results. Other numerical experiments have provided statistical results for some very difficult problems. While classical nth order magic squares with the entries 1..n² must have the magic sum for each row, column, and the main diagonals, there are some interesting relatives for which these restrictions are increased or relaxed. These include: serial squares of all orders with sequential filling of rows which are always pandiagonal (i.e., having all parallel diagonals to the main ones on tiling with the same magic sum, also called broken diagonals); pandiagonal logic squares of orders 2n derived from Karnaugh maps; Franklin squares of orders 8n which are not required to have any diagonal properties, but have equal half row and column sums and 2-by-2 quartets; as well as sets of parallel magical bent diagonals. Our early explorations of magic squares, considered as square matrices, used Mathematica® to study their eigenproperties. We have also studied the moment of inertia and multipole moments of magic squares and cubes (treating the numerical entries as masses or charges), finding some elegant theorems. We have also shown how to easily compound smaller squares into very high order squares. There are patents proposing the use of magical squares for cryptography. Other possible applications include dither matrices for image processing and providing tests for developing constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) solvers for difficult problems.

Enumerating the bent diagonal squares of Dr Benjamin Franklin FRS

All 8th order Franklin bent diagonal squares with distinct elements 1, …, 64 have been constructed by an exact backtracking method. Our count of 1, 105, 920 dramatically increases the handful of known examples, and is some eight orders of magnitude less than a recent upper bound. Exactly one-third of these squares are pandiagonal, and therefore magic. Moreover, these pandiagonal Franklin squares have the same population count as the eighth order ‘complete’, or ‘most-perfect pandiagonal magic’, squares. However, while distinct, both types of squares are related by a simple transformation. The situation for other orders is also discussed.

Multilevel En Bloc Spondylectomy and Chest Wall Excision via a Simultaneous Anterior and Posterior Approach for Ewing Sarcoma

A case study of a patient with Ewing sarcoma of T8 and T9 with paravertebral and chest wall involvement, who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy and subsequent multilevel en bloc spondylectomy and chest wall excision using a simultaneous anterior and posterior approach. To show the feasibility of treating Ewing sarcoma of the thoracic spine with paravertebral and chest wall extension by multiagent chemotherapy followed by a multilevel en bloc spondylectomy and chest wall excision using a simultaneous anterior and posterior approach. Ewing sarcoma is a primary malignant bone tumor that occasionally involves the spinal column. Most patients with Ewing sarcoma of the spine are treated with systemic chemotherapy followed by definitive local control. Radiation therapy is the usual mode of local control in these patients because the spinal column has historically been considered a surgically inaccessible site where wide surgical margins are difficult to obtain. However, en bloc spondylectomy techniques have been described that can probably further decrease the risk of local recurrence, thereby minimizing or even eliminating the need for radiation therapy. To our knowledge, a combined en bloc spondylectomy and chest wall excision in a patient with Ewing sarcoma in the spine has not been previously reported. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy consisting of vincristine, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide was administered. After completion of the chemotherapy, an en bloc spondylectomy of T8 and T9 with removal of the chest wall was achieved using a simultaneous anterior and posterior approach to the spine. A stackable carbon fiber cage filled with autograft and allograft bone was inserted between T7 and T10. The spine was stabilized with anterior and posterior instrumentation. The chest wall was reconstructed with contoured polymethylmethacrylate and polypropylene (Marlex, Textile Development Associates, Inc., Franklin Square, NY) mesh. The patient maintained normal neurologic function, and pain was lessened. The margins were free of tumor, and tumor necrosis was 100%. After surgery, radiotherapy was not administered. No local tumor recurrence or distant metastases were evident at the last follow-up. Balance in the coronal and sagittal planes was maintained. The patient has returned to work and resumed normal activities of daily living. Multilevel en bloc spondylectomy and chest wall excision performed using a simultaneous anterior and posterior approach is a safe and effective technique that may be used to achieve adequate margins in select patients with malignant tumors involving the thoracic spine and chest wall. This technique can eliminate the need for radiation therapy in patients with Ewing sarcoma and probably decreases the risk of local recurrence compared with radiation therapy alone.

On the edge: A tale of skaters and urban governance

The 'problem' of skating has been conflated with a 'problem' with young people in public spaces, reflecting a rise in fear of crime from the mid-twentieth century and referencing more general questions about public space and citizenship. My task in this paper is to highlight some of the tensions between skating and urban governance in Franklin Square, Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania in Australia. This task is indebted to ideas about governance and citizenship advanced by Nikolas Rose; about the proper city as conceived by Michel de Certeau; and about fortress strategies and species of spaces promulgated by Stephen Flusty. Franklin Square functions in two ways in this work. First, its examination encourages consideration of local cases. Second, it can be deployed as a heuristic device through which to explore the edges of public space and citizenship. The essay is intended to make two contributions to social and cultural geography, one enlarging on some well-rehearsed debates about situated and contested socio-spatial relations in what I hope are innovative ways, the other unsettling particular strategies that place skaters 'on the edge' and yet draw them into particular domains of citizenship via specific practices of urban governance.

The design and use of the Bioethics Consultation Form

The emergence of the ethics consultation as a means to resolve moral crises in clinical medicine has revealed the need for a worksheet that would facilitate intake and analysis. The author developed the "Bioethics Consultation Form" as an attempt to remedy this need. The form is arranged in an outline format and is a useful asset to ethics committee discussions and record keeping. The first section covers basic intake data concerning the patient's medical and personal information, advance directives, and values, as well as the values of the physician and family. After the intake section is completed with the above data, the ethics consultant then turns to the analysis section. This second section allows for (1) the discussion of conflicting values, (2) the identification of priorities, and (3) the elucidation of ethical norms relevant to the case. The Bioethics Consultation Form was adopted by the Patient Care Advisory committee of the Franklin Square Hospital Center in Baltimore, Maryland in 1986. The methodology in the use of the form will be discussed. Further, the potential spectrum of consultative cases that can be analyzed using the form will be highlighted.

The physician could hardly believe what he was seeing through the laparoscope. A bright red worm, 15 cm or more long, was wriggling through the patient's intestinal wall into the abdominal cavity. Then, astonishingly, yet another blood-red worm emerged from the intestine. The scene was an operating room of Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore not long ago. Within a matter of days, physicians there saw three patients with the same problem. Two required abdominal surgery, and the other was treated medically. The Franklin Square physicians turned to the School of Hygiene and Public Health at the neighboring Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions with the obvious question: What is this worm? Where does it come from? Why are we suddenly seeing patients with this problem? Nurses as the Core of a Psychiatric Team

There has been a trend among hospitals to provide psychiatric services on general hospital wards rather than in separate psychiatric units. In January 1971, on a one-year trial basis, the Baltimore County Department of Health, Bureau of Mental Health, collaborated with the 300bed Franklin Square Hospital to develop a psychiatric services program. There was no separate psychiatric inpatient service. Instead, there were ten beds, located throughout the hospital, for patients who had psychiatric problems in addition to physical illness, for example suicidal tendencies. The Baltimore County Health Department provided a psychiatric nurse consultant for a half day twice a week to meet with the medicalsurgical clinical specialist of Franklin Square Hospital. The clinical specialist had had previous experience in psychiatric nursing, which enhanced the consultant-consultee

A Reexamination of the Franklin Square

In Chapter 3 of his book Magic Squares and Cubes W. S. Andrews states in concise form what is known about the particular magic square invented by Benjamin Franklin. Included in this chapter is “An Analysis of the Franklin Square” by Paul Carus. Each of these authors gives a most penetrating treatment of the subject, and an ingenious method of construction is described. Of this method, however, Carus admits: “We do not know the method employed by Franklin; we possess only the result, but it is not probable that he derived his square according to the scheme employed here” (p. 112).
