On the distribution of energy in the ductile fracture of high strength steels

The distribution of energy in the ductile fracture of high strength steels is investigated by considering two contributions to the total energy: a dissipative energy term and a dislocation storage term. By means of a material characteristic related to the mean interinclusion spacing on a fracture surface, it is possible to calculate the relative importance of each energy term. It is shown that the dissipation term predominates and accounts for about 96 pct of the total energy absorbed in the ductile fracture process.

Flow and Fracture of High Strength Steels in Torsion

Abstract The torsional flow and fracture characteristics of several high strength steels are examined. Comparison is made to flow curves obtained in uniaxial tension. It is noted that the flow curve obtained in torsion may not necessarily duplicate the flow curve determined in tension. It is suggested that lack of agreement may be due to the presence of microcracks. Nonuniform deformation localizes the formation of microcracks. It is shown that the tendency to deform locally is influenced not only by strength level but by the value of the strain hardening exponent as well. Torsional strains are also presented and compared to corresponding tensile fracture strain data. It is noted that the value of the torsional fracture strain may be low and less than the tensile fracture strain despite a fracture surface which appears ductile.

1. The fracture toughness of high-strength steels after tempering at low temperatures is increased by alloying with ∼4% Ni, Cr, and Cu, and also 1%W, 1.6% Si, and 2% Co. Alloying with molybdenum impairs the fracture toughness. 2. The resistance to fracture of high-strength steel depends to a considerable extent on structural factors — the size of martensite crystals and the evenness of carbon distribution in microvolumes of the martensite.

A Technique for the Evaluation of Hydrogen Embrittlement Characteristics of Electroplating Baths

A simple electrochemical technique is described for measuring the quantity of hydrogen permeating a thin membrane of iron or steel during cathodic charging or electroplating. For cadmium electroplating, the quantity is small when this metal is deposited from a fluoborate or a DL‐α‐amino‐n‐butyrate bath, but comparatively high when a cyanide bath is used. The mechanism which governs hydrogen permeation in alkaline solutions containing capillary active anionic species is discussed, and the remarkable similarity between hydrogen permeation and hydrogen induced brittle fracture of high strength steel is demonstrated.
