It is found that in order to calculate the fourth-order elastic constants (FOECs) for non-primitive lattices, which lack centre-of-inversion symmetry, it is sufficient to determine the sublattice displacement up to second order in strain. We consider the hcp lattice and show that the special strains, used in thermal expansion calculations, make the second-order sublattice displacement zero.
