Zero-divisor placement, a condition of Camillo, and the McCoy property

The rings for which any polynomial with a nonzero right annihilator must have a nonzero constant right annihilator are called the right McCoy rings. This class of rings includes the duo, reversible, polynomially semicommutative, and Armendariz rings, among others. In this paper we introduce a new condition, strictly generalizing the reversible property, which still implies the McCoy condition. We call this new condition the outer McCoy property; it arises from guaranteeing annihilators in unexpected places.This outer McCoy condition is further motivated by a property of 2-primal rings, which we call the Camillo property, first noticed by Victor Camillo and the fourth author. We study the relationships between the outer McCoy property, the Camillo property, and other standard ring-theoretic conditions, with many examples delimiting their connections. For instance, we show that any ring whose set of nilpotents is closed under multiplication must satisfy the Camillo property when restricted to linear polynomials.

Extending a catalog of mock and quantum modular forms to an infinite class

Utilizing a classification due to Lemke Oliver of eta-quotients which are also theta functions (here called eta-theta functions), Folsom, Garthwaite, Kang, Treneer, and the fourth author constructed a catalog of mock modular forms $$V_{mn}$$ having weight 3/2 eta-theta function shadows and showed that these mock modular forms when viewed on certain sets of rationals, transform as quantum modular forms under the action of explicit subgroups. In this paper, we introduce an infinite class of functions that generalizes one row of the catalog, namely the $$V_{m1}$$, and show that the functions in this infinite class are both mock modular and quantum modular forms.

Bernstein-Type Theorem for Zero Mean Curvature Hypersurfaces Without Time-like Points in Lorentz–Minkowski Space

Calabi and Cheng-Yau’s Bernstein-type theorem asserts that an entire zero mean curvature graph in Lorentz–Minkowski $$(n+1)$$ -space $${{\varvec{R}}_{1}^{n+1}}$$ which admits only space-like points is a hyperplane. Recently, the third and fourth authors proved a line theorem for hypersurfaces at their degenerate light-like points. Using this, we give an improvement of the Bernstein-type theorem, and we show that an entire zero mean curvature graph in $${\varvec{R}}^{n+1}_1$$ consisting only of space-like or light-like points is a hyperplane. This is a generalization of the first, third and fourth authors’ previous result for $$n=2$$ .

Unitary representations of real reductive groups

We present an algorithm for computing the irreducible unitary representations of a real reductive group G. The Langlands classification, as formulated by Knapp and Zuckerman, exhibits any representation with an invariant Hermitian form as a deformation of a unitary representation from Harish-Chandra’s Plancherel formula. The behavior of these deformations was approximately determined in the KazhdanLusztig analysis of irreducible characters; more complete information comes from the Beilinson-Bernstein proof of the Jantzen conjectures. Our algorithm follows the signature of the form through this deformation, counting changes at reducibility points. An important tool is Weyl’s “unitary trick:” replacing the classical invariant Hermitian form (where Lie(G) acts by skew-adjoint operators) by a new one where a compact form of Lie(G) acts by skew-adjoint operators. ∗All of the authors were supported in part by NSF grant DMS-0968275. Duality on generalized cuspidal edges preserving singular set images and first fundamental forms

In the second, fourth and fifth authors' previous work, a duality on generic real analytic cuspidal edges in the Euclidean 3-space $\boldsymbol R^3$ preserving their singular set images and first fundamental forms, was given. Here, we call this an `isometric duality'. When the singular set image has no symmetries and does not lie in a plane, the dual cuspidal edge is not congruent to the original one. In this paper, we show that this duality extends to generalized cuspidal edges in $\boldsymbol R^3$, including cuspidal cross caps, and $5/2$-cuspidal edges. Moreover, we give several new geometric insights on this duality.

Simulation of wind velocity time histories on long span structures modeled as non-Gaussian stochastic waves

A methodology is proposed for efficient and accurate modeling and simulation of correlated non-Gaussian wind velocity time histories along long-span structures at an arbitrarily large number of points. Currently, the most common approach is to model wind velocities as discrete components of a stochastic vector process, characterized by a Cross-Spectral Density Matrix (CSDM). To generate sample functions of the vector process, the Spectral Representation Method is one of the most commonly used, involving a Cholesky decomposition of the CSDM. However, it is a well-documented problem that as the length of the structure – and consequently the size of the vector process – increases, this Cholesky decomposition breaks down numerically. This paper extends a methodology introduced by the second and fourth authors to model wind velocities as a Gaussian stochastic wave (continuous in both space and time) by considering the stochastic wave to be non-Gaussian. The non-Gaussian wave is characterized by its frequency–wavenumber (FK) spectrum and marginal probability density function (PDF). This allows the non-Gaussian wind velocities to be modeled at a virtually infinite number of points along the length of the structure. The compatibility of the FK spectrum and marginal PDF according to translation process theory is secured using an extension of the Iterative Translation Approximation Method introduced by the second and third authors, where the underlying Gaussian FK spectrum is upgraded iteratively using the directly computed (through translation process theory) non-Gaussian FK spectrum. After a small number of computationally extremely efficient iterations, the underlying Gaussian FK spectrum is established and generation of non-Gaussian sample functions of the stochastic wave is straightforward without the need of iterations. Numerical examples are provided demonstrating that the simulated non-Gaussian wave samples exhibit the desired spectral and marginal PDF characteristics.

Total Retroperitoneal En Bloc Resection of Multivisceral-Peritoneal Packet (TROMP Operation): A Novel Surgical Technique for Advanced Ovarian Cancer; Retrospective Cohort Analysis of a Prospective Collected Database

Background: a total retroperitoneal en bloc resection of multivisceral-peritoneal packet (TROMP operation) is a no-touch isolation technique in a retroperitoneal space to resect the parietal peritoneum and the affected organs in advanced ovarian cancer. The study prescribed and analyzed the results of this novel technique for primary cytoreductive surgery. Methods: The study included 208 patients operated between January 2015 and December 2017 in Charite, Berlin. TROMP operation was performed in 58 patients, whereas the other 150 patients were operated with the conventional cytoreductive method. Findings: The complete tumor resection rate accounts for 87.9% in TROMP group and 61.3% in the conventional surgery group. (P=0.001). This difference was even stronger in the sub-group of very advanced stages (T3c+T4) (85.1% of TROMP group and in only 53.1% in the conventional surgery group, P=0.001). The duration of the primary cytoreductive surgery was about 33 minutes shorter in TROMP group (median: 335 minutes vs. 368 minutes; TROMP vs. conventional, respectively) in spite of the fact that the most advanced cytoreductive procedures were performed statically significant more in TROMP operation arm in comparison with the conventional surgery arm. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups regarding the postoperative complication, blood loss or the length of stay in intensive care unit. Interpretation: TROMP operation is a visible and very effective technique of surgical therapy in advanced ovarian cancer. This technique increased the complete tumor resection rate to 87.9% without increasing the blood loss, postoperative complications or the duration of surgery. Converse theorems for automorphic distributions and Maass forms of level N

We investigate the relations for $L$-functions satisfying certain functional equation, summationa formulas of Voronoi-Ferrar type and Maass forms of integral and half-integral weight. Summation formulas of Voronoi-Ferrar type can be viewed as an automorphic property of distribution vectors of non-unitary principal series representations of the double covering group of $SL(2)$. Our goal is converse theorems for automorphic distributions and Maass forms of level $N$ characterizing them by analytic properties of the associated $L$-functions. As an application of our converse theorems, we construct Maass forms from the two-variable zeta functions related to quadratic forms studied by Peter and the fourth author.
