Characterization of cellulose nanocrystals from Zhombwe (Neorautanenia brachypus (harms) CA Sm.) bagasse.

Increased awareness of environmental pollution has changed focus to the use of biodegradable materials because they lack persistence in the environment. This article focused on the production of cellulose nanocrystals from Zhombwe, Neorautanenia brachypus (Harms) CA Sm. bagasse using steam explosion, alkaline treatment, bleaching, purification, and acid hydrolysis. The chemical composition after the treatments was determined using TAPPI standards. Further characterization was done using x-ray Diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The nanoscale dimensions and morphology of the extracted nanocrystals was determined through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). FTIR spectroscopy and DSC confirmed the removal of noncellulosic compounds. XRD revealed that N. brachypus bagasse contained cellulose type I, which partly endured morphological change to polymorph II after purification and hydrolysis. FE-SEM revealed elliptical to rod-shaped structures after acid hydrolysis, which had a mean length and width of 1103 nm and 597 nm respectively. TAPPI tests revealed that successive chemical treatments increased crystallinity by 29.7%, enriched cellulose content by 74.2%, reduced lignin content by 21.7%, and reduced hemicellulose to less than 1%. The semicrystalline nature of the material produced in our work is a promising candidate for swelling hydrogel applications in areas such as wound dressing, heavy metal removal, controlled drug delivery, agriculture, and sanitary products. Future studies may focus on surface modification of nanocrystals to improve their thermal stability and therefore expand their range for potential industrial applications.

Exploring the Anticonvulsant Properties of a Celecoxib-Phospholipid Conjugate: Synthesis, Activation, and Evaluation of Cytotoxicity.

Epilepsy poses a significant global health challenge, particularly in regions with limited financial resources hindering access to treatment. Recent research highlights neuroinflammation, particularly involving cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) pathways, as a promising avenue for epilepsy management. This study aimed to develop a Cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor with potential anticonvulsant properties. A promising drug candidate was identified and chemically linked with phospholipids through docking analyses. The activation of this prodrug was assessed using phospholipase A2 (PLA2)-mediated hydrolysis studies. The conjugate's confirmation and cytotoxicity were evaluated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Sulphoramide B (SRB) assays. Docking studies revealed that the Celecoxib-Phospholipid conjugate exhibited a superior affinity for PLA2 compared to other drug-phospholipid conjugates. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed the successful synthesis of the conjugate, while DSC analysis confirmed its purity and formation. PLA2-mediated hydrolysis experiments demonstrated selective activation of the prodrug depending on PLA2 concentration. SRB experiments indicated dose-dependent cytotoxic effects of Celecoxib, phospholipid non-toxicity, and efficient celecoxib-phospholipid conjugation. This study successfully developed a Celecoxib-phospholipid conjugate with potential anticonvulsant properties. The prodrug's specific activation and cytotoxicity profile makes it a promising therapeutic candidate. Further investigation into underlying mechanisms and in vivo studies is necessary to assess its translational potential fully.

A novel multi-model estimation of phosphorus in coal and its ash using FTIR spectroscopy

The level of phosphorus must be carefully monitored for proper and effective utilization of coal and coal ash. The phosphorus content needs to be assessed to optimize combustion efficiency and maintenance costs of power plants, ensure quality, and minimize the environmental impact of coal and coal ash. The detection of low levels of phosphorus in coal and coal ash is a significant challenge due to its complex chemical composition and low concentration levels. Effective monitoring requires accurate and sensitive equipment for the detection of phosphorus in coal and coal ash. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a commonly used analytical technique for the determination of phosphorus content in coal and coal ash samples but proves challenging due to their comparatively weak fluorescence intensity. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) emerges as a promising alternative that is simple, rapid, and cost-effective. However, research in this area has been limited. Until now, only a limited number of research studies have outlined the estimation of major elements in coal, predominantly relying on FTIR spectroscopy. In this article, we explore the potential of FTIR spectroscopy combined with machine learning models (piecewise linear regression—PLR, partial least square regression—PLSR, random forest—RF, and support vector regression—SVR) for quantifying the phosphorus content in coal and coal ash. For model development, the methodology employs the mid-infrared absorption peak intensity levels of phosphorus-specific functional groups and anionic groups of phosphate minerals at various working concentration ranges of coal and coal ash. This paper proposes a multi-model estimation (using PLR, PLSR, and RF) approach based on FTIR spectral data to detect and rapidly estimate low levels of phosphorus in coal and its ash (R2\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$^2$$\\end{document} of 0.836, RMSE of 0.735 ppm, RMSE (%) of 34.801, MBE of − 0.077 ppm, MBE (%) of 5.499, and MAE of 0.528 ppm in coal samples and R2\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$^2$$\\end{document} of 0.803, RMSE of 0.676 ppm, RMSE (%) of 38.050, MBE of − 0.118 ppm, MBE (%) of 4.501, and MAE of 0.474 ppm in coal ash samples). Our findings suggest that FTIR combined with the multi-model approach combining PLR, PLSR, and RF regression models is a reliable tool for rapid and near-real-time measurement of phosphorus in coal and coal ash and can be suitably modified to model phosphorus content in other natural samples such as soil, shale, etc.

A Study of the Association between Primary Oral Pathologies (Dental Caries and Periodontal Diseases) Using Synchrotron Molecular FTIR Spectroscopy in View of the Patient's Personalized Clinical Picture (Demographics and Anamnesis).

In this exploratory study, we searched for associations between the two most common diseases of the oral cavity-dental caries and periodontal diseases-taking into account additional factors, such as personalized clinical pictures (the individual risk factors of the patient), based on the method of a multivariate data analysis of the molecular changes in the composition of human gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). For this purpose, a set of synchrotron Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra of gingival crevicular fluid samples from patients with different demographics, levels of dental caries development and periodontal diseases, and the presence/absence of concomitant chronic diseases were obtained and analyzed. Using a set of techniques (v-, F-, Chi-square tests; a principal component analysis (PCA); and the hierarchical clustering of principal components (HCPCs)) implemented in the R package FactoMineR allowed us to assess the relationship between the principal components (PCs) and characteristics of the respondents. By identifying the features (vibrational modes in the FTIR spectra) that contribute most to the differentiation of the spectral dataset, and by taking into account the interrelationships between the patients' characteristics, we were able to match specific biological markers (specific molecular groups) to the two factors of interest-two types of oral pathologies. The results obtained show that the observed changes in the quantitative and qualitative composition of the modes in the infrared (IR) spectra of the GCF samples from patients with different dental caries developments and periodontal diseases present confirm the difficulty of identifying patient-specific spectral information. At the same time, different periodontal pathologies are more closely associated with other characteristics of the patients than the level of their caries development. The multivariate analysis performed on the spectral dataset indicates the need to take into account not only the co-occurrence of oral diseases, but also some other factors. The lack of this consideration (typical in lots of studies in this area) may lead to misinterpretations and consequently to a loss of data when searching for biological markers of certain oral diseases.

Morphology-transforming AuNPs-based fluorescent probe for ultra-low sensitive detection of levofloxacin in urine samples at pH 7.0 through excimer formation

Fluorescent metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have garnered considerable interest in the realm of healthcare applications. Within this domain, we present a novel fluorescent sensor: Pamoic acid (PA) functionalized excitation-dependent gold nanoparticles (PA@AuNPs), designed to ascertain levofloxacin (LF) concentrations in human urine samples under pH 7.0 conditions. The synthesis of PA@AuNPs was achieved via a chemical reduction method employing PA as both a reducing and stabilizing agent. Validation of the successful synthesis of PA@AuNPs was conducted utilizing a suite of analytical techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy (UV–Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Microscopic examination via field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) elucidated the spherical morphology of PA@AuNPs, with an average diameter ranging from 10 to 15 nm. Furthermore, atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed an average surface roughness of 20.72 nm for PA@AuNPs. Thermal analysis results divulge that PA@AuNPs are highly stable up to 370 °C. The PA@AuNPs have shown more than 10-fold higher selectivity for LF in comparison with other commercially available antibiotics. The fluorescence emission intensity of PA@AuNPs (quantum yield (ΦF) 3.36 %) has shown enhanced redshift (436 → 497 nm; ∼61 nm) (λex 353 nm) upon the sequential addition of LF (0 → 100 µM) and achieved a lower detection limit (LoD = 36 nM; LoQ = 121 nM; Ka = 1.0457 × 104 M−1) with increased ΦF 18.96 %. This radiative process and fluorescence enhancement were confirmed by time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) measurement (4.89 → 5.36 ns). Interestingly, upon sensing LF, PA@AuNPs changed their morphology from spherical to octahedron and displayed an excimer formation through intermolecular π-π stacking. Furthermore, the stability of the complex, PA@AuNPs•LF which formed through coordination, by restoring the fluorescence intensity of PA@AuNPs•LF (turn on) in the presence of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) (turn off) is demonstrated. The formation of the PA@AuNPs•LF complex was further confirmed by XRD analysis and FTIR spectroscopy. The HRTEM and FESEM validate that PA@AuNPs•LF have octahedral morphology with an average size of 20–30 nm, and the obtained moiré fringes in TEM images are due to the overlap of LF on the surface of PA@AuNPs. The AFM analysis divulges that PA@AuNPs•LF had a larger surface roughness (Sa = 26.91 nm). The experimentally attained zeta potential of PA@AuNPs (–12.6 mV) was further decreased (–17.6 mV) in the presence of LF, which confirms the interaction between PA@AuNPs and LF. The cell viability (82 %) in L929 Fibroblast cells augmented the biological applications of PA@AuNPs. The practicability of the fluorescent sensor probe was demonstrated in human urine samples with recovery ranges from 97.56 to 104.38 %.

#749 Components in blood collection tubes interfere with the spectral signatures of patients with kidney disease: analysis by infrared microspectroscopy

Abstract Background and Aims Kidney disease is a worldwide public health problem, affecting between 8%-16% of the global population. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a silent disease and its detection is often late, making the treatment difficult. Considering the emerging Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) as a biophotonic resource for the biomedical sciences, we aimed to identify spectral signatures related to biomarkers of CKD in human blood serum using the microscopy FTIR option. Method Blood serum samples from 17 healthy in comparison to 33 CKD patients were analyzed by micro-reflectance FTIR spectroscopy. The first aspect to be addressed refers to the possible influence of components present in the container tube. Here we showed that separator gel in VACUETTE® tubes is a relevant source of spectral interference which could decrease the accuracy of discrimination from 85% to 65%. Acquiring a diluted gel signal as a background would improve the discrimination performance in spite of some gel bands still present in sample data. Results In this case, our results indicated that vibrations associated with galactose-4-sulfate, CH2 bending of the methylene chains, C=C in lipids and fatty acids, C=N stretching, CH bending vibration from the phenyl rings, N-H bending vibration coupled to C-N stretching and β-sheet of Amide II and ring base are modulated in blood serum samples of chronic kidney disease patients compared to healthy patients. Urinary trypsin inhibitors, fatty acids, phenolic derivatives, tryptophan, and plasminogen were the biomolecules related to these assignments were the biomolecules related to these assignments. Conclusion In conclusion, FTIR is a viable option for fast diagnosis of chronic kidney disease being also a powerful tool for monitoring the disease. Due to its capability of large batch analysis, the micro-FTIR would be an eligible technology for clinical laboratories in healthcare facilities. However, for direct clinical applications, ATR-FTIR would be the option of choice.

Biogenically synthesized aluminum oxide nanoparticles via phyllanthus emblica seeds for photocatalytic applications

In this study, Phyllanthus emblica (amla) seed extract was employed to biosynthesize Aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3 NPs) as efficient stabilizers and bio-reducing agents. The successful synthesis of Al2O3 NPs was confirmed and characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy (UV/Vis), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD). Antibacterial activity of these environmental friendly Al2O3 NPs was evaluated through a disk diffusion method, demonstrating their potential as antimicrobial agents against pathogens, including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Additionally, Al2O3 NPs exhibited substantial photocatalytic activity, achieving a remarkable 95.06% degradation of 4-nitroaniline (4-NA) under UV light irradiation. Furthermore, Al2O3 NPs served as efficient catalysts in catalytic biomass pyrolysis, boosting bio-oil yields by 47.4%. The resulting bio-oil was analyzed using FT-IR spectroscopy. This research emphasizes the significance of biomass waste in producing biofuel as well as disinfection and environmental remediation applications, offering sustainable solutions for various challenges.

Effects of composition on the structure, thermal and some physical characteristics of Bi2O3-B2O3-ZnO-SiO2 glasses

The influence of composition on the structure, thermal, and some physical characteristics of bismuth borate glasses, formulated as 55Bi2O3–(35-x-y)B2O3–(5+x)ZnO–(5+y)SiO2 (where 0 ≤ x, y ≤ 15 mol%), was investigated. Comprehensive analyses were conducted using techniques such as X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), and Dilatometry. XRD confirmed the amorphous nature of the glass samples, while FTIR spectroscopy revealed that the glasses are primarily composed of BO4, BO3, BiO6, BiO3, ZnO4, and SiO4 structural units. DTA provided further evidence of the samples' glassy state and insights into key temperatures like glass transition (Tg), crystallization (Tc), and melting (Tm). The study finds that substituting B2O3 with SiO2 increases all characteristic temperatures, whereas replacing it with ZnO decreases Tg and Tc but increases Tm. The maximum thermal stability, indicated by a ΔT of 99°C, was observed in the glass with a 55Bi2O3–20B2O3–20ZnO–5SiO2 composition. Dilatometric measurements showed that the investigated glasses have a high coefficient of thermal expansion (10.0–10.7 ppm/°C) values, a low glass transition temperature (345–376°C), and a low dilatometric softening temperature (364–392°C). Additionally, the density and molar volume of the samples were accurately determined.

Biological activities of fig latex -loaded cellulose acetate/poly(ethylene oxide) nanofiber for potential therapeutics: Anticancer and antioxidant material

Cancer is a fatal disease, and unfortunately, the anticancer drugs harm normal cells. Plant's extracts are the golden key to solving this issue. In this research, fig latex - from Ficus carica- was encapsulated using cellulose acetate (CA) and poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) polymers via electrospinning method (Fig@CA/PEO). Fig@CA/PEO nanofiber scaffold was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The average fiber diameter was decreased with an increase in latex concentration from 715 nm to 583 nm. FT-IR spectroscopy indicated the presence of fig latex in Fig@CA/PEO nanofibers. Compared to 5-fluorouracil, Fig@CA/PEO nanofiber scaffold considered safe towards normal cells (WI-38). Moreover, the nanofiber scaffold was efficient against colon cancer cells (Caco) and liver cancer cells (HepG2) as it demonstrated IC50 values for cells by 23.97 μg/mL and 23.96 μg/mL, respectively. Besides, the nanofiber scaffold revealed mechanistic variations in apoptotic oncogenes; described by the upregulation of BCL2 and P21, combined by downregulation of p53 and TNF. Moreover, the nanofiber scaffold showed antioxidant activity counting 33.4, 36 and 41 % of DPPH scavenging as the fig latex concentration increased. The results demonstrate that the Fig@CA/PEO nanofiber scaffold is a promising substitute to traditional chemotherapy.

Spectroscopic Investigation of Tomato Seed Germination Stimulated by Trichoderma spp.

Seed germination is a complex process that can be negatively affected by numerous stresses. Trichoderma spp. are known as effective biocontrol agents as well as plant growth and germination stimulators. However, understanding of the early interactions between seeds and Trichoderma spp. remains limited. In the present paper, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy were used to reveal the nature of tomato seed germination as stimulated by Trichoderma. A rapid response of tomato seeds to Trichoderma spp. was observed within 48 h on Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) substrate, preceding any physical contact. Raman analysis indicated that both Trichoderma species stimulated phenolic compound synthesis by triggering plant-specific responses in seed radicles. The impact of T. harzianum and T. brevicompactum on two tomato cultivars resulted in alterations to the middle lamella pectin, cellulose, and xyloglucan in the primary cell wall. The Raman spectra indicated increased xylan content in NA with T9 treatment as well as increased hemicelluloses in GZ with T4 treatment. Moreover, T4 treatment resulted in elevated conjugated aldehydes in lignin in GZ, whereas the trend was reversed in NA. Additionally, FTIR analysis revealed significant changes in total protein levels in Trichoderma spp.-treated tomato seed radicles, with simultaneous decreases in pectin and/or xyloglucan. Our results indicate that two complementary spectroscopic methods, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, can give valuable information on rapid changes in the plant cell wall structure of tomato radicles during germination stimulated by Trichoderma spp.

Influence of temperature and gas atmosphere on the thermal decomposition of (NH4)6Mo7O24.4H2O

This study investigates the effects of gas atmosphere and synthesis temperature on the thermal decomposition of (NH4)6Mo7O24.4H2O. Samples were synthesized in a CVD furnace at temperatures of 450, 550, and 650 °C, using different gases: H2, O2, and Ar, individually. The resulting samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and optical absorbance. XRD results revealed the formation of MoO3 in all samples produced in an O2 atmosphere. However, in samples synthesized in an inert atmosphere (Ar), a mixture of MoO3 and Mo4O11 phases was detected. The same phase mixture was observed in samples produced at 450 and 550 °C in an H2 atmosphere. However, in samples synthesized in H2 at 650 °C, MoO2 mixed with Mo4O11 was formed. Raman and FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the results obtained by XRD, and these two techniques were also used to compare samples synthesized at 550 °C in different environments. The VSM results indicate a paramagnetic response in the analyzed samples, and there is also an increase in magnetization as the percentage of the Mo4O11 phase increases. Absorbance measurements were also performed and further confirm expected changes in sample composition.

Unveiling the Mechanism of Plasma-Catalyzed Oxidation of Methane to C2+ Oxygenates over Cu/UiO-66-NH2.

Nonthermal plasma (NTP) offers the potential for converting CH4 with CO2 into liquid products under mild conditions, but controlling liquid selectivity and manipulating intermediate species remain significant challenges. Here, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the Cu/UiO-66-NH2 catalyst in promising the conversion of CH4 and CO2 into oxygenates within a dielectric barrier discharge NTP reactor under ambient conditions. The 10% Cu/UiO-66-NH2 catalyst achieved an impressive 53.4% overall liquid selectivity, with C2+ oxygenates accounting for ∼60.8% of the total liquid products. In situ plasma-coupled Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) suggests that Cu facilitates the cleavage of surface adsorbed COOH species (*COOH), generating *CO and enabling its migration to the surface of Cu particles. This surface-bound *CO then undergoes C-C coupling and hydrogenation, leading to ethanol production. Further analysis using CO diffuse reflection FTIR and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy indicates that in situ generated surface *CO is more effective than gas-phase CO (g) in promoting C-C coupling and C2+ liquid formation. This work provides valuable mechanistic insights into C-C coupling and C2+ liquid production during plasma-catalytic CO2 oxidation of CH4 under ambient conditions. These findings hold broader implications for the rational design of more efficient catalysts for this reaction, paving the way for advancements in sustainable fuel and chemical production.

Preparation and study of the effect of pH value on structural, morphological, electrical and magnetic properties of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles prepared by sol-gel precipitation method

The present study reports the synthesis of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CoFe2O4 NPs) using the sol-gel precipitation process via mixing a stoichiometric ratio of cobalt chloride (1 M) and ferric chloride (2 M). The molar of ferric to cobalt was mentioned (2:1) and then 2 M of sodium hydroxide was added. The structural and morphological features of the material were assessed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The electrical properties were analyzed using an LCR meter, while the magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) investigated the material's molecular vibrations. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that all the samples exhibited a cubic spinal structure, and no additional peak was detected. Interestingly, the average size of the crystallites (D) decreased from 17.74 nm to 16.58 nm as the pH level increased from 7 to 13. This finding provides important insights into the behaviour of the tested samples under different pH conditions. The formation of the ferrite spine was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy, with the primary detected bands (408.92–470.65 cm−1) attributed to the octahedral complexes and (516.94–588.31 cm−1) assigned to the tetrahedral ones. The dielectric and imaginary part of the dielectric constant decreased with increasing pH values excluding samples prepared at pH = 11. All samples with different pH values exhibit resonance peaks at frequencies up to (1 KHz). The magnetic measurements carried out by the VSM instrument, the result show that the saturation magnetization increases with increasing pH and the higher saturation magnetization is 68 emu. g1.

A screening method for plastic-degrading fungi

The growing amount of plastic waste requires new ways of disposal or recycling. Research into the biodegradation of recalcitrant plastic polymers is gathering pace. Despite some progress, these efforts have not yet led to technologically and economically viable applications. In this study, we show that respirometric screening of environmental fungal isolates in combination with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy can be used to identify new strains with the potential for the degradation of plastic polymers. We screened 146 fungal strains, 71 isolated from car repair shops, an environment rich in long-chain hydrocarbons, and 75 isolated from hypersaline water capable of growing at high concentrations of NaCl. When grown in a minimal medium with no carbon source, some strains produced significantly more CO2 when a pure plastic polymer was added to the medium, some only at high salinity. A selection of these strains was shown by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy to alter the properties of plastic polymers: Cladosporium sp. EXF-13502 on polyamide, Rhodotorula dairenensis EXF-13500 on polypropylene, Rhodotorula sp. EXF-10630 on low-density polyethylene and Wickerhamomyces anomalus EXF-6848 on polyethylene terephthalate. Respirometry in combination with specific spectroscopic methods is an efficient method for screening microorganisms capable of at least partial plastic degradation and can be used to expand the repertoire of potential plastic degraders. This is of particular importance as our results also show that individual strains are only active against certain polymers and under certain conditions. Therefore, efficient biodegradation of plastics is likely to depend on a collection of specialized microorganisms rather than a single universal plastic degrader.

Designing Green Synthesis-Based Silver Nanoparticles for Antimicrobial Theranostics and Cancer Invasion Prevention.

Researchers are increasingly favouring the use of biological resources in the synthesis of metallic nanoparticles. This synthesis process is quick and affordable. The current study examined the antibacterial and anticancer effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) derived from the Neurada procumbens plant. Biomolecules derived from natural sources can be used to coat AgNPs to make them biocompatible. UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to verify the synthesis of AgNPs from Neurada procumbens plant extract, while transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize their morphology, crystalline structure, stability, and coating. UV-visible spectrum of AgNPs shows an absorption peak at 422 nm, indicating the isotropic nature of these nanoparticles. As a result of the emergence of a transmission peak at 804.53 and 615.95 cm-1 in the spectrum of the infrared light emitted by atoms in a sample, FTIR spectroscopy demonstrated that the Ag stretching vibration mode is metal-oxygen (M-O). Electron dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectral analysis shows that elementary silver has a peak at 3 keV. Irradiating the silver surface with electrons, photons, or laser beams triggers the illumination. The emission peak locations have been found between 300 and 550 nm. As a result of DLS analysis, suspended particles showed a bimodal size distribution, with their Z-average particle size being 93.38 nm. The findings showed that the antibacterial action of AgNPs was substantially (p≤0.05) more evident against Gramme-positive strains (S. aureus and B. cereus) than E. coli. The biosynthesis of AgNPs is an environmentally friendly method for making nanostructures that have antimicrobial and anticancer properties.

Probing Effect of 6MeV Electron Beam Irradiation on Haemoglobin Protein Using Spectroscopic Techniques.

In this work, we study the effect of 6MeV electron beam irradiation on the physicochemical properties of lyophilized Human Haemoglobin A (HbA). Electron beams generated from Race Track Microtron accelerator with energy 6MeV were used to irradiate HbA at fluences of 5 × 1014 e-/cm2 and 10 × 1014 e-/cm2. Pristine and electron beam irradiated HbA were characterized using UV-visible and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy. The interfacial tension of the aqueous solutions of HbA are also analysed by pendant drop method. Absorbance intensity, % transmittance and interfacial tension decrease with fluence. The peak position of the Soret band (λsoret = 404nm) remains unaffected by the fluences. FTIR spectroscopy confirms the changes in the secondary structure of the haemoglobin. In the amide band I, the percentage of α-helix reduced from 8% to 1%, and an increase in β-sheet (19% to 29%) and β helix (6.3% to 15%) is observed. Interfacial tension decreases from 46.0mN/m and 44.0mN/m with increase in irradiation dose. These finding provides realistic guideline for biological cells exposure to electron beam radiation doses.

Chemically Synthesized Sb-Doped SnO2 Nanoparticles for Supercapacitor Application

This study explores the potential of antimony tin oxide (ATO) as an electrode material for supercapacitor applications. ATO, known for its exceptional electrical conductivity and stability, was synthesized using the coprecipitation method followed by calcination. The resulting ATO powder underwent thorough characterization through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). XRD analysis confirmed the tetragonal morphology and phase purity of ATO nanoparticles, while SEM revealed a sphere-like structure with an irregular surface. FTIR spectroscopy identified various functional groups, including O–H stretching, C–H symmetric and asymmetric vibrations, and the characteristic–SnO2; vibration mode, providing insights into the surface properties crucial for electrochemical performance. Electrochemical evaluations, conducted through cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, demonstrated a specific capacitance of 140 F/g for the ATO electrode. This notable specific capacitance highlights the potential of ATO as an advanced electrode material for supercapacitors, showcasing its suitability for applications requiring rapid charge-discharge cycles and high specific power. This research contributes to the understanding of ATO’s structural and functional aspects, emphasizing its promising role in advancing supercapacitor technology. The synthesized ATO nanoparticles, characterized by their unique morphology and enhanced electrochemical performance, pave the way for cleaner and more efficient energy storage solutions.

Impact of aluminum fluoride addition on crystallization, structure and thermal properties of lead borate glasses

The glass composition (70-x)PbO–(30-y)B2O3–(x+y)AlF3, where x and y ranges from 0 to 20 mol%, were prepared using the conventional melt-quenching-annealing technique. The structural and thermal properties of the glasses were comprehensively analyzed using techniques like Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Dilatometry, Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). XRD confirmed the amorphous, non-crystalline structure of the glasses. The glass network was found to be composed of structural units such as PbO4, BO4, BO3 and AlO6 using FTIR spectroscopy. FTIR analysis revealed significant structural changes, including the transformation of BO4 to BO3 units and the increase in non-bridging bonds, particularly with higher AlF3 content. DTA was instrumental in determining characteristic temperatures, such as the glass transition, melting, and peak crystallization temperatures, along with glass stability parameters (∆T, Hr, Tgr) for all samples. The study found that the addition of AlF3 led to a decrease in these characteristic temperatures when replacing B2O3, but an increase when replacing PbO. Variations in the density and thermal expansion of the lead borate glass were observed upon the addition of AlF3, decreasing when substituting for PbO and increasing when substituting for B2O3. These findings provide insights into the properties of oxyfluoride glasses, paving the way for future optimization in their composition for varied applications.

Direct binding and characterization of laccase onto iron oxide nanoparticles

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) exhibit unique magnetic properties and possess a high surface-to-volume ratio, making them ideal candidates for the conjugation of substances, including enzymes. Laccase (EC 1.10.3.2), an oxidative enzyme with diverse applications, presents an opportunity for enhancing stability and reusability through innovative immobilization techniques, thus reducing overall process costs. In this study, we employed a direct binding procedure via carbodiimide activation to conjugate laccase onto IONPs synthesized using thermal chemical coprecipitation. Stabilization of the nanoparticles was achieved using thioglycerol and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as capping agents. Characterization of the synthesized nanoparticles was conducted using UV-spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. FTIR spectroscopy analysis confirmed successful laccase binding to magnetic nanoparticles, with binding efficiencies of 90.65% and 73.02% observed for thioglycerol and PVA capped IONPs, respectively. Furthermore, the conjugated enzyme exhibited remarkable stability, retaining nearly 50% of its initial activity after 20 reuse cycles. This research demonstrates that immobilizing laccase onto IONPs enhances its activity, stability, and reusability, with the potential for significant cost savings and expanded applications in various fields.

Effect of particle size and composition on local magnetic hyperthermia of chitosan-Mg1-xCoxFe2O4 nanohybrid.

In this study, Mg1-xCoxFe2O4 (0≤x ≤ 1 with ∆x = 0.1) or MCFO nanoparticles were synthesized using a chemical co-precipitation method and annealed at 200, 400, 600, and 800°C respectively to investigate the structural properties of the materials by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Controlled annealing increased particle size for each value of x. The aim was to investigate how specific loss power (SLP) and maximum temperature (Tmax) during local magnetic hyperthermia were affected by structural alterations associated with particle size and composition. The lattice parameter, X-ray density, ionic radius, hopping length, bond length, cation-cation distance, and cation-anion distance increase with an increase in Co2+ content. Raman and FTIR spectroscopy reveal changes in cation distribution with Co2+ content and particle size. Magnetic properties measured by the physical property measurement system (PPMS) showed saturation magnetization (Ms), coercivity (Hc), remanent magnetization (Mr/Ms), and anisotropy constant (K1) of the Mg1-xCoxFe2O4 nanoparticles increase with Co2+ content and particle size. When exposed to an rf magnetic field, the nanohybrids experienced an increase in both the SLP (specific loss power) and Tmax (maximum temperature) as the particle size initially increased. However, these values reached their peak at critical particle size and subsequently decreased. This occurs since a modest increase in anisotropy, resulting from the presence of Co2+ and larger particle size, facilitates Néel and Brownian relaxation. However, for high anisotropy values and particle size, the Néel and Brownian relaxations are hindered, leading to the emergence of a critical size. The critical size increases as the Co2+ content decreases, but it decreases as the Co2+ content increases, a consequence of higher anisotropy with the increase in Co2+. Additionally, it is noteworthy that the maximum temperature (Tmax) rises as the concentration of nanohybrids grows, but the specific loss power (SLP) decreases. An increased concentration of chitosan-MCFO nanohybrids inhibits both the Néel and Brownian relaxation processes, reducing specific loss power.
